4 Drover, My First Herding Trial Champion! Drover is my English Shepherd, a loose eyed, up-right herding type. Not fancy, flashy, or real fast. He is honest, true, biddable, loves to work, thinks for himself, and I think he is the best dog in the world! We went home and started training. I read books, watched videos Tim Taylor's have been a favorite, attended clinics with Larry Painter, Linda Rorem, Jeanne Joy Hartnagle Taylor, Cathy Hartley, Fido Farm's July Clinic. We started having success! I talked to many successful folk at trials we attended and picked up pointers. Erin Ledbetter was very helpful. I scribed for as many Judges as I could, in all classes. If you had attended our first AHBA trial you would be amazed that Drover and I made it on our journey this far! My good friends drove four hours to watch us at our first trial. All fully expected to see us do well! I expected to do well. I had not prepared past visiting and working the sheep a few times. You know you had a bad run when the only nice thing the judge can say is, "Well, you are dressed really nice today!" I laugh as I remember this. Pat Taylor critiqued a Ranch Large Flock run that I had a video of. I remember Pat asking me if I really wanted her to. She started with questions. I answered them as I watched the video. That was an eye opener! I do not think Pat had to say much except how the next time I might handle each situation. Honestly that run was a bad as the first run two years earlier! But I learned much from those questions. Page 2

5 Our work at home has been on sheep and ducks. I have a small flock of about 70 Katahdin sheep that wear bells. They like to find holes in the fence or an open gate so they can go off in the night! Drover and I have learned so much from their escapes. During all this Drover earned his nick name "my Little Buddy". When we got to Level III our driving was a problem. I took a year off from trialing to work on the driving. Drover gathers naturally. He had to learn to drive. We worked hard, so many folk helped us with chats, lessons, clinics, and written material... and finally Jeanne Joy Hartnagle Taylor showed me her way and by golly we got it! We could suddenly drive anywhere! In 2016 we went to work on our championship points. We worked hard and attended as many trials as we could and after each trial we came home with a point. At 7 points I was starting to become anxious for the next point! We earned our last point on January 1, 2017! Our Journey has been fun and lots of hard work, too. I have met so many nice people from all over the country. Drover and I have become a team. But more than a team. A person and a dog that know and understand each other that work together for the same thing. The ribbons and the titles are really nice... the relationship we have developed I would not trade for anything in the world. That is EVERYTHING! Page 3

6 Drover is the fourth English Shepherd to earn his HTCH and the only English Shepherd sire with an HTCH. He is seven years old. I look forward to many more good English Shepherds earning their HTCH! My dream is to see 25! But I am sure there could be 100's! I have two Drover daughters KAT and Montgomery. My girls, Good Lord, willing will be following in their sire's paw prints soon! 7 HERDING TRIALS AT BLACK PRONG April, 7, 8 and 9, 2017, Bronson, FL On Friday, April 9, three days of AHBA trials began at the Black Prong Equestrian Center near Bronson, Florida. This beautiful facility provides plenty of scope for a variety of classes. On offer were HRD cattle, HTD sheep and ducks, HTAD sheep and cattle, and HRD Sheep. The stock was excellent, calm but providing plenty of challenges. Judges were Terry Kenney and Linda Rorem. The first day included the HRD cattle and HTD sheep and ducks classes. For the cattle ranch course, two sets of six head were in two pens at the end of an alley. The cattle were taken from the designated pen and moved down the alley into the first arena. They were moved across the arena to the gate into the second arena, being held off the while it was being opened. In the second arena, the cattle were taken through an obstacle made of two wooden box-like frames. Levels I and II took the cattle to the far corner on the right, with Level II handlers remaining at the block obstacle while the cattle were driven to the corner. Level III handlers remained at the handler s post while the cattle were driven through the block obstacle and to the far corner on the right, and were held there while the handler came to the gate located in that corner. Then there was a gate sort of two into an adjacent small arena. The cattle that remained in the main arena were then moved to the right-hand corner. The cattle that had been sorted into the smaller arena were then collected from that arena and taken to join the four that had been settled in the corner of the main arena. From that point, the cattle were gathered, with handler location differentiated by class. The cattle were taken around the post and to another gate opening into the lane back to the pens. The HTD sheep and duck classes were held in two large grassy fields. The sheep field sloped gently upward to where the sheep were set out, allowing a great view of the course. The sheep handled well. If the dog did the right thing, so did the sheep. While the sheep were calm, they could also show independence and the dog needed to be on his or her toes to keep them moving smoothly through the course. 9 The large Swedish ducks were likewise calm but showed independence of mind. They didn t flock tightly, but could head off on their own if the dog didn t keep them covered. For all classes, the biggest challenge was the pen. The ducks had no intention at all of going into that trap! Pat Leach s Kate, moving them along. Maggie, with Molly Reyenga, heading toward the pen. Saturday and Sunday, the 8 th and 9 th, were the days for the HRD sheep and HTAD sheep and cattle classes. In HTAD, Course 4 was used for both sheep and cattle. Due to the busy judging schedule I wasn t able to get any photos of the runs, but as with the other courses, there were good stock and good challenges. With the two judges and large facility, the HTAD runs and HRD runs could take place at the same time. The ranch course was excellent "cross country" through the Black Prong grounds, taking advantage of elements of the grounds used for carriage-driving competitions, including a large permanent bridge, and incorporating pen work and sorting. The Saturday course included putting collars, some with bells, on five of the ten sheep, and sorting in a sorting chute, while the Sunday course included a gate sort of five of the ten (including one with a bell for level III) and a foot bath. Some of the photos of the course I took on Monday, since both days were full days of judging; I did get a few photos of a couple of runs on Sunday during a break in my judging. Page 7

10 Starting out on the HRD course, the sheep were taken from one of the pens on the left, and out through the gate at the end of the lane. From there, the sheep entered the "maze" trails that are used during carriage-driving competitions. Next came a set of three adjoining paddocks. Once inside the first of the paddocks, the sheep were taken between a set of cones. From there they were taken across the paddock, with the handler s position varying depending on the class so that a drive was included for the appropriate level. Sorting followed next. The type of sort was different each day. On Saturday, the sheep were taken into the paddock which included a sorting chute. In the chute, the sheep were sorted into two groups of five. The handlers put collars (some with bells) on one of the groups, then the two groups were put back together. Page 8

11 On Sunday, instead of the chute-and-collars exercise, the sheep were gate-sorted into two groups of five. In the advanced class, one of the sorted-off sheep had to be the one with the bell. Then group remaining in the first paddock was put through the foot bath, in an L-shaped chute in the corner (entering at the left in the photo, exiting at the right). After completion of the foot bath, the two groups were rejoined. On both days, after the sorting chute or the footbath, the group of ten was put in the area just past the trees at the other end of the paddock. Then there was a gather from that paddock, into the one where the handler's post was set. Level III handlers sent their dog from the post. Level II handlers could stand at the gate, with the dog starting from the post, and Level I handlers could set the dog at the gate and then move about halfway to the sheep before sending the dog. The sheep were brought back through the gate, to the handler's post. For Level I, the handler would be with the sheep as they were brought into the area containing the handler's post. In Level II, the handler would be at the gate. In Level III, the handler would remain at the post throughout the gather, so the dog would bring the sheep back through the gate to the handler waiting at the post. In all levels, the sheep were brought to and around the post, before leaving the set of paddocks. Above, left, Kermit, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and Shannon Murphy take the sheep around the post. 12 Barbara Craig and Tazz head across the bridge with the sheep. After the bridge, the course varied slightly from Saturday to Sunday. On Saturday, the sheep were put into two small pens and the handler removed the collars that he or she had placed on the sheep at the beginning of the course. On Sunday, as there were no collars to be removed, these pens were bypassed and the sheep taken directly onto the road leading to the home pens. They reentered the alleyway and were returned to the pen from which they were taken, as shown above by Shannon Murphy and Kermit. With around runs for each ranch trial, there was a lot of good exercise for the judges!
