5 AusBoard 2018 Speakers Brett Melke is the only full-time lawyer working exclusively in animal law in Australia. Brett had a background as a general legal practitioner for 14 years before commencing his own business in animal law in Whilst he primarily deals with issues relating to dogs, a significant portion of his work relates to cats, birds and farming animals. Issues range very widely from agreements and disputes between breeders and pet owners, compliance issues relating to establishments involved with animals to attacks by dogs, prosecution work relating to establishments involving animals, dangerous/menacing dog declarations, dog destruction orders, veterinary negligence, personal injury issues arising from damage caused by animals, insurance and contractual issues arising from animal incidents. Brett Melke has a unique position in animal law in that he both defends and prosecutes matters involving animals. This provides him with unique insight into how both sides of the disputes work. Brett is married, with two children and a black Labrador. Interests include songwriting, music, hiking and travel. Jules Dos Santos has had a passion for animals for as long as she can remember. Growing up, her siblings were litter mates! She started volunteering in veterinary hospitals at the age of 15 and became a qualified veterinary nurse when she was 18. Jules has worked in many areas of veterinary nursing including specialised surgical nursing and later became the Emergency Manager of a large Veterinary Specialist Hospital. It was in emergency that Jules identified a horrifying epidemic emerging from poorly operated and sub minimal catteries and boarding facilities. After treating hundreds of sick cats in particular, Jules s determination to open not just a cattery but the best cattery catering for the most important aspect of animal care - their welfare. Jules went on to study cat psyhology, behaviour and all aspects of cat welfare with the aim of perfecting these considerations in her cattery. Cat welfare, behaviour and psychology, is vastly misunderstood in the boarding environment and it all starts with one big word... Passion. In order to consider welfare in the boarding environment you must have the passion to do so. Only then will the cats welfare fall into place. Glenn Cooke has been successfully training people and their dogs, training trainers and working in specialised environments for more than 26 years. His expertise ranges from basic obedience and behavioural problem solving for family pets right through to the highly specialised training and development of service dogs for military and police roles. Some of Glenn s roles include breeding working German Shephers and Rottweilers, socialisation and development, temperament assessments, obedience, agility, film and television, behavioural problem solving, and the advanced training of working dogs. Glenn is also regularly called on as an expert consultant in court hearings relating to canine aggression. Karen Smith is a Director of M10 Collective, a dynamic Gold Coast-based PR and brand marketing consultancy that offers a comprehensive range of public relations, marketing, communication and media services. Karen has over 20 years experience in PR and marketing for small to medium sized businesses. Her exeperience includes theme park marketing, tourism, retail and services marketing, restaurant marketing, event management, film promotion and publicity, and product launches. As an independently-owned creative entity, M10 is driven to make it happen for their clients via a range of comprehensive multimedia avenues, targeted to meet business needs. Dr Mick Kidd - After graduation from Sydney University my first job was in Wollongong at a 6-man practice where I had four different bosses (all good blokes) with four different ways of doing things! It was a great experience in what was mainly a small animal practice but with enough horse work and even a bit of cattle work. It also involved the interesting roles of vet for Dapto and Bulli Greyhound meetings as well as Kembla Grange Gallops and Bulli Trots. As the practice was near the beach is was novel to have clients in bikinis in the waiting room. Somehow my more experienced colleagues seemed to always do those consults. They were kind enough though to let me work on a crocodile with an abcessed tooth! After two years there I came back to Sydney for a bit before doing the usual Europe holiday thing for four months. I then got the offer of buying Hurlstone Park Veterinary Hospital. Running a business in your mid 20 s was a sharp learning curve! After a year or so Tim Crisp came into partnership and left two years ago. Our partnership worked well probably because we are so different in many ways. I had a three-year term as the vet on the Greyhound Racing Board (unusual experience) and several years as Vice President of the Canine Research Foundation. Apart from the usual small animal work, I work at some of the Metropolitan Thoroughbred meetings - a chance to get my horse fix and get outdoors. For many years I have been involved with TAFE teaching of vet nurses and at present do Workplace Assessments of nurses through Richmond and Bankstown TAFE. I enjoy this because I get to visit many practices (and hence colleagues) and hopefully help those nurses where it matters most. I guess my main non-vet interest involve sport - after years of playing rugby, I now referee it. I love the S s Skiing, squash and surfing down the south coast. I am fortunate to have a great team of i nterested and capable vets and nurses and even a receptionist that started in the practice before I was at Uni! The staff have become friends as well which allows me to free up some time away from the practice. Dr Ben Porter graduated from the University of Queensland with First Class Honours in Veterinary Science in He launched his veterinary career at a large mixed practice in Shepparton, North-East Victoria, where he was a jack-of-all-trades veterinarian and gained extensive experience in all facets of small and large animal medicine and surgery. After seven years in practice, Ben wanted a new challenge and to diversify, and became a Technical Services Veterinarian at two large animal pharmaceutical businesses (Merial and Boehringer-Ingelheim). Following his keen passion for nutrition and education, Ben joined the Royal Canin team in January On top of this, he continues to work in general practice most weekends in Shepparton. Renee Turpin - As a Senior Employment Relations Consultant, Renee provides specialised advice on complex employment relations and work, health and safety matters to Employsure s small business clients across Australia. With an extensive background across employment relations, she works daily to ensure clients are across changes to their industry Awards and meeting their obligations as employers in relation to the Fair Work Act.
