1 SPECIAL MILITARY COVER LIST About once every five years a great collection comes along, last time it was Victoria Cross holders, this time it is a mix of a few of these plus a great selection of World War I and II items from both sides. Many of these we have not had before and remember we can always help you to spread the cost with flexi pay. Brian Albert Ball VC APRIL 2016 Issue 01 Albert Ball VC ( ), signed small piece (8cm x 3cm) cut from the bottom of a letter. A World War I ace pilot with 44 Victories including shooting down the Red Baron, who called him the best English pilot. Supplied with a group of 56 Squadron from 1917, which includes him, two pictures in a bi-plane, a copy of the 2006 Stamp PHQ postcard on which he featured and the front page of a 1917 French magazine with him on the front. 2 Cecil Lewis MC RYW015A per month for 2 months Cecil Lewis MC ( ). A World War I Ace pilot and later writer whose book the film Aces High was based on. Later went on to be an Oscar winner and founder of the BBC. Small signed piece, slight foxing, supplied with small photograph. Lt Col William Bishop VC Front Major James McCudden VC Back VCB per month for 5 months Lt Col William Bishop VC ( ). Black and white (15cm x 17cm) signed photograph with clear signature below the image. Lovely printed note from the editor below signature The hand that signed the above name is the hand that downed a Hundred Huns. VCM per month for 5 months Major James McCudden VC, signed black and white photograph (22cm x 17cm). A World War I Ace pilot with 57 Victories. The photograph though very rare is not in the greatest condition and has been stuck to a board and has a few cracks, but is of course 100 years old. 3 Charles Chapman MC 30 per month for 5 months RYW015B 150 Charles Chapman MC ( ), World War I ace pilot, signed handwritten letter from 1916 answering an autograph request, though he says a signed photo of him was not worth having! William Rhodes Moorhouse VC VCM per month for 10 months William Rhodes Moorhouse VC ( ), the first airman to be awarded the medal. Signed piece stuck on card below a photograph of him, some foxing but we have never had his signature before. For more VC signed items see the Gallantry Gazette Magazine RYW015C 50 Spencer Grey, World War I pilot with the Navy, signed (19cm x 14cm), poor condition of the signature and the photograph has a small hole in it. A newspaper clipping says he was the pilot who gave Sir Winston and Lady Churchill their first ever flights. Spencer Grey

4 Captain Eddie Rickenbacker Captain Eddie Rickenbacker ( ), the top scoring American Ace of World War I with 26 Victories. Signed posed picture with a clear dedicated signature. RYA018A per month for 5 months Sir William Dickson Paul Von Hindenburg RYW015D 50 Sir William Dickson ( ), signed letterhead with a photograph of him on horseback attached. Flew with the Royal Navy during World War I and was an RAF commander during World War II. Later established V Force and became the first Chief of the Defence Staff. RYG045A per month for 6 months Paul Von Hindenburg ( ), was the German Chief of Defence Staff during World War I, afterwards he became the second President of Germany. We offer here a signed official Memo from 9th August 1896 to the 37th Infantry Brigade reporting that the papers of a staff officer had not arrived. Was Knighted during World War I, then entered politics and joined the Nazi Party becoming Governor of Bavaria. Werner Molders 119 per month for 5 months Hermann Goring ( ) and his wife Emmy ( ), signed picture postcard which they have both signed and also shows their daughter, Christmas greetings on the reverse. Goring was an Ace pilot during World War I and founded the Gestapo in During World War II he was Hitler s Number 2 and led the Luftwaffe. 9 Charles Lindbergh RYA018C per month for 5 months Charles Lindbergh ( ), signature on page stuck to cut with a coin and newspaper clipping, plus two photographs. The first man to fly solo across the Atlantic. Francis Gabreski ( ), signed 31st July 1944 Mast head from the Chicago Daily Tribune. Not sure why this particular edition was chosen, he was due to return to America just before then, but on one final mission was shot down and on this day he would have been a Prisoner of War. He was an Ace in both World War II and Korea. James Doolittle RYA018E 35 James Doolittle ( ), dedicated signature on his letterhead. Best known for leading the Doolittle Raid. Francis Gabreski Ira Eaker RYA018E 35 RYA018F 50 Ira Eaker ( ), signed typed letter from 1977 answering an autograph request and mentioning about his time in Britain. World War II commander of the Eight Air Force in the UK. Supplied with a Black and White photograph of him. 9

10 Commanding Officer Raymond Collishaw 1918 Combats in the Air Army Form. The report talks about attacks and the shooting down of two Aircraft near Dieppe by a pilot of 208 Squadron. This has been signed by the Commanding Officer Raymond Collishaw ( ), the highest scoring World War I Ace of the RNAS and the second highest scoring Canadian. RYW015N per month for 10 months Commanding Officer Sir Keith Park Major Christopher Draper RYW015J per month for 5 months 1918 Combats in the Air Army Form, reporting on a plane shot down by a pilot of 48 Squadron, East of Albert. This has been signed by the Commanding Officer Sir Keith Park ( ), who is best known for being in command during the Battle of Britain in World War II. RYW015K per month for 10 months 1918 Combats in the Air Army Form, reporting on an enemy plane shot down while on a Special Reconnaissance mission. This has been signed by the Commanding Officer of 208 Squadron Major Christopher Draper ( ). Known as The Mad Major, he is best known for flying under Bridges, but was an Ace pilot.
