3 Workshop Descriptions MONDAY S SESSIONS KEYNOTE ADDRESS Beyond Labels II: The Future of Animal Welfare * Roger Haston, Chief of Analytics, PetSmart Charities In this session, he will continue from that framework, exploring data that highlights key trends in animal welfare and develop a vision for the future. This session offers: A quick history and the philosophical grounding principals of animal welfare; an examination of nationwide data to explore key trends; and a vision of the opportunities and challenges we face in the future. *Please note Beyond Labels I and II have been reversed from what was previously published. LEADERSHIP TRACK Sponsored by SAWA Beyond Labels I: The True Impact of LRR and Intake Policies * Roger Haston, Chief of Analytics, PetSmart Charities Keynote speaker, Dr. Roger Haston, explored data highlighting trends in animal welfare to develop a vision for the future. In this session he will do an indepth examination of live release rate and intake policies and gain a better understanding of the impacts of our decisions on animal welfare. We will see how we work in a system together and need to rethink our metric for success for the future. Management By Walking Around: Session 1 Gilda Bonanno, Gilda Bonanno, LLC AKA Please Don t Prowl, Growl and Scowl, Management by walking around (MBWA) is a common management practice that can be very helpful in managing and engaging employees, setting a good example, and staying in touch with what s really happening with staff. The session will cover: why great managers use MBWA; common pitfalls to avoid; making sure your non-verbal communication supports your message; and how to make MBWA part of your regular routine. Management By Walking Around: Session 2 Gilda Bonanno, Gilda Bonanno, LLC If you missed part one, you ll still gain benefit from attending this session, which will focus on: asking open-ended questions to get information and feedback, active listening, demonstrating authentic leadership presence, and overcoming challenges. OPERATIONS TRACK Sponsored by HSUS It s About Dogs AND People: Safe Humane s Court Case Dog Program Collaborations Cynthia Bathurst, Executive Director, Safe Humane Chicago Dogs confiscated for abuse or neglect and considered evidence in a court case used to sit in kennels for months and years at Chicago Animal Care and Control and then be euthanized. Since Safe Humane Chicago s innovative Court Case Dog program was implemented in January of 2010, more than 1,000 dogs have been put through the program and saved, no longer considered damaged goods. Join us to learn: Illinois laws/procedures that protect animals; court advocates and their role as the eyes and ears of animal victims; strategies for programming that makes dogs confiscated for abuse and neglect ready for rescue and adoption, and how to set up in-shelter programs that help the dogs, at-risk populations and young leaders. Planning for Disasters Evacuation & Sheltering Diane Webber, Program Manager, Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control The location and amenities of an emergency shelter have a significant impact on effective management, but it all starts with a plan. This workshop is a review of the criteria used for selection, set-up and management of an emergency animal shelter with minimal impact and maximum efficiency based on the resources needed. Foster Programs: The Future of Animal Sheltering Tawny Hammond, Midwest Regional Director, Best Friends Animal Society and Kelly Duer, Foster Care Specialist, Maddie s Fund Shelters all over the country are increasingly using innovative foster care programs as a way to increase capacity, provide better care and engage the community. In this presentation, you ll learn how Best Friends Animal Society implemented a largescale emergency foster program for the adult dogs in their care at the NRG Arena after Hurricane Harvey, why overnight foster programs are a great way to keep stress levels down in shelter dogs, and why field trip fostering might just be the gateway to finding the fosters and adopters you need. Thank you to Monday s Leadership Track Sponsor! Thank you to Monday s Operations Track Sponsor!

4 Workshop Descriptions MONDAY S SESSIONS CONT D FIELD SERVICES TRACK Ritualistic Animal Abuse Dr. Charlotte Robinson, Director of Vet Services, Code 3 Associates An overview of some of the most common religious animal sacrifices that are encountered in the US, Emphasis on officer safety, the 1st amendment complications and the standards for killing agricultural animals. Coping with Stress: Responders to Victims of Violence & Trauma Related Experiences Part 1 & 2 Dr. Olivia Johnson, Founder/Trainer, Blue Wall Institute This workshop will address the causes and effects of stress on law enforcement, first responders, probation, attorneys, educators, clergy, counselors, advocates, and others who come into contact with and support victims of family violence and/or traumarelated life experiences. Being transparent about the causes and affects can help better understand things like: liability, medical issues and costs, lost work and productivity, absenteeism, lost trust, and suicide. Being transparent about all of this will help these professionals deal with their own stress and issues that can affect mental health. In addition, doing so will help break down barriers and stigmas surrounding these issues. TUESDAY S SESSIONS LEADERSHIP TRACK Fundraising 101 Susan Cosby, Director of Lifesaving Programs, Petco Foundation Fundraising is critical for the success of all nonprofits, but doing it effectively and efficiently is key. How can we raise the most money in the quickest way? Come learn how you can build a solid foundation of fundraising for your organization. In this session you will learn the importance of a fundraising (development) plan, how to execute the plan on an annual basis, and what needs to be done year-to-year to build upon your fundraising successes and misses. Who Ya Gonna Call? Abuse Busters! Phil Arkow, Coordinator, The National LINK Coalition The inconsistencies in who investigates animal abuse across the U.S. is so maddeningly user-unfriendly that many people give up trying to report cruelty, and the animals suffer. The National LINK Coalition has published the first National Directory of Animal, Child, Elder, and Domestic Abuse Investigating Agencies in 6,493 communities. We ll review what the Directory reveals; a six-stage process toward mandated reporting; and what your group needs to do to improve the prevention of cruelty to animals by making it easier for the public to contact the abuse busters in your service area. Making the Decision to Euthanize Potentially Dangerous Dogs Aditi Czarnomski, CPDT-KSA, Animal Behavior Consultant, Animal Control Officer, Urbane Animal Behavior The topic of euthanization is not one to be taken lightly, and can often stir controversy within organizations and communities, but it s a topic that does need to be addressed. Learn ways to determine if a dog is too dangerous to adopt out into the community, and how to effectively discuss this topic with your staff, volunteers, and community members. And What Could go Wrong with That? Risk Management Basics for Non-profit Animal Shelters & Rescues Mary Tiefenbrunn, Executive Director, Champaign County Humane Society We all know there are inherent risks in running an animal shelter or rescue. But are you aware of all those risks and the ways in which you can minimize your organization s exposure to loss and liability? In this session you ll learn how to think like a lawyer just enough to spot potential risks and take steps to protect your organization. We ll cover insurance policies, vendor contracts, special events, volunteer management, worker s comp, dog adoption issues, and more. OPERATIONS TRACK Sponsored by ASPCA Distribution of Infectious Organisms and New Lessons Learned after Natural Disasters Dr. Gerryll Hall, Professional Services Veterinarian, Merck Animal Health The response to disasters in 2017 was remarkable. Although the events did not occur in the Midwest, the impact of infectious agents from the devastated areas was felt from Oregon to Maine. During this presentation we will follow two separate shelters affected by the hurricanes. Their plan for rescuing and sorting animals will be reviewed as well as the process of animal relocation. We will also examine what went well and what stumbling blocks led to problems at the recipient shelters. Both unique experiences will help all attendees understand the events better and consider adjustments to their emergency response programs.

5 Workshop Descriptions TUESDAY S SESSIONS CONT D Feline Enrichment Aditi Czarnomski, CPDT-KSA, Animal Behavior Consultant, Animal Control Officer, Urbane Animal Behavior Cats are intelligent creatures with natural drives to forage and hunt. In indoor life, they often get bored and overweight, sometimes developing behavior issues. By providing cats with a variety of enrichment options, people can create a more natural routine and lifestyle for their felines. Learn ways to incorporate enrichment for cats into your shelters, and what ideas you can pass along to adopters as well. Service Dogs and the Law Shelby Clark, Attorney, and Michael Paravag We will explain how service dogs and emotional support animals are handled by federal and, to an extent, state law; detail the distinctions between them and other similar types of animals; and discuss the history of service animals. We will address special problems and issues faced by animal shelters. Keys to Working with Challenging Volunteers Lydia Krupinski, Director of Community Programs and Eric Tostado, Coordinator of Volunteer Services, The Anti- Cruelty Society Volunteers are often the lifeblood of our animal protection community. When it works, it works well, with volunteers who support our mission and who fit seamlessly into our operations and culture. But, of course, it doesn t always work so well sometimes, we have volunteers who aren t as cooperative or teamfocused, or who even have their own agendas or simply don t like to follow rules. This workshop will explore ways to both avoid these types of situations, but also how to effectively handle them if/when they arise. FIELD SERVICES TRACK Sponsored by IACA Anatomy of a Taskforce: Using Resources to Prosecute and Win Kevin Hearst, Animal Cruelty Instructor, Law Enforcement Training Institute How to build a crime stopping Animal Cruelty Unit! Our presentation will show how to navigate through procedures and assignments, to successfully prosecute animal cruelty cases. Each member has specialized functions and job duties, from evidence collection to working with rescue groups. Thank you to Tuesday s Field Services Track Sponsor! Ethically Speaking: Bringing Morals to Our Public Relationships Kevin Hearst, Animal Cruelty Instructor, Law Enforcement Training Institute Why ethics should be enforced at your work place! Our presentation will explain what role ethics play in your work environment (supervisory and subordinates), how to navigate through integrity issues on and off the clock, and legal liabilities and misconduct while in uniform/on the job. We ll explain how to fulfill your assigned job duties and adhere to policy without becoming unprofessional. Investigating Dog Bite Fatalities: Part 1 & 2 Jim Crosby, Canine Aggression Expert, Canine Aggression Consulting Fatal and life-threatening dog attacks on humans are rare events, but due to consequences to the victims, owners and community, there is little room for error. This session will provide procedures on capture; evaluation; collection and evaluation of evidence; and processes for determining just how the relationship between dogs and humans can go so awry that a human loses their life. These investigative principles can also inform and improve day-to-day investigation of common dog bites and help the investigator assess conflicting stories and physical evidence to arrive at considered conclusions. The course will also help an investigator and agency look at their policies and work towards safer dog/human communities. WEDNESDAY S SPECIAL SESSION Defensive Handling and Managing Over Aroused Dogs in the Kennel Aditi Czarnomski, CPDT-KSA, Animal Behavior Consultant, Animal Control Officer, Urbane Animal Behavior No matter the line of work, whether it s in medical, shelter, or animal control field, there may come a time when a dog turns fractious. You will need to know how to keep yourself, others, and the dog safe through defensive dog handling and safety. You ll learn leashing skills, quick muzzle wraps, and ways to keep yourself safe. Over arousal in dogs can lead to aggression; learn what you can do in your shelters to keep dogs calm and entertained. Thank you to Tuesday s Operations Track Sponsor!
