1 RIHAB ALI OMER ABDALLA HAMID An Den Tierkliniken 35, Leipzig, Leipzig Professional Overview Since graduation, I have been working in the field of parasitology. I got trained in different aspects dealing with Schistosma, Onchocerca, Leishmania and Malaria parasites. I continued my research activities in Schistosoma and Fasciola. During my master study I worked on Trypansoma evansi and the effect of the prophylactic treatment with Antrycide on the infectivity of the parasite to laboratory mice. My interest in Parasitology was progressing. Hence, I start working in different aspects of Echinoccus parasite. The scholarships I got in Germany and my placement with an European group (University of Hohenheim and University of Leipzig) known to be the most famous in the field of Echinococcus and helminth parasites and the fact that my supervisor and other researchers in that group were editors in Parasitology journal and members of the European board of Parsitology allowed me to be oriented, dependable and increase my experience. I learned new techniques in molecular biology and immunology and applied it my research. This gave me more motivation to continue my career as an energetic curious researcher. I am still eager learning new aspects and applying what I have already learned in a creative, effective way for the sake of the community. I am sure that good performance always need hardworking, highly dynamic, organized researchers and hope to be among those who have these criteria. Hands on having better research and better future. Hydatid cyst were present in 59% (466/779) of camels, 6% (299/4,893) of cattle, 11% (1,180/10,422) of sheep and 2% (106/5,565) of goats, with little variation among geographical areas. 532 of these cysts were examined genetically and could be overwhelmingly (98.7%) allocated to Echinococcus canadensis (all of 215 cysts from camels, 112 of 114 cysts from cattle, 134 of 138 cysts from sheep, and all of 65 cysts from goats); the genotype G6 was identified by sequencing of 13 of these isolates. Only 2 cysts from cattle belonged to E.ortleppi. The mean number of cysts per infected animal was much higher in camels (5.1%) than in other species ( %), and cyst fertility was higher in camels and cattle (74% and 77%) than in goats and sheep (31% and 19%). Fertile cysts from five human patients from hospitals in Khartoum and Juba belonged to E. canadensis. This study confirms the predominance pf the camel strain (G6) in Sudan and the infectivity of this strain for humans. This is the first genetic characterization of HE in Sudan.
