KCUSA members will remember 2018 as the Year of the Kooikerhondje, the year that the AKC formally recognized our beloved breed and welcomed Kooikers into the Sporting Group. Some club members celebrated by taking to the show ring right away in January. Some Kooikers earned points towards their championships, and two completed their championships by early February. (Details inside!) Other Kooikerhondjes enjoyed family time indoors while wild storms raged throughout much of the United States. All the Kooikers and their families are invited to the club s 2018 Annual Event in Louisville, Kentucky, March Billed as Kooikers Coming Out to the Sporting Group, this annual meeting promises three days of Kooiker-focused fun, education, and frolicking. Read all about it inside! And DO send in your registration form by February 28, whether your dog(s) will participate in the events, or sit them out by your side. Karen Dean, Editor

January 2018 Dear Members, Filling out documents, working Meet the Breeds, organizing Open Shows, growing a Kooikerhondje inventory spread over the entire lower 48 states, organizing Matches, growing a membership base, maintaining a newsletter, creating and writing a Breed Standard, comparing the Dutch, FCI and AKC Breed Standards and making sure the readers in the USA may read different words but will picture in their minds the exact same dog, working with AKC on the Canine College presentation, printing a Breed Standard booklet, planning and executing annual events and meetings, this all has been a long, arduous, tiring and at the same time very rewarding venture. To assist on the recognition of a breed by the AKC is very special. Through 5 KCUSA Boards of Directors I have had the pleasure to guide KCUSA to the ultimate end goal, full recognition of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje Breed by the American Kennel Club. This month it finally happened and the Kooikers are now able to show at all the AKC Dog Shows including the coveted Westminster Dog Show. I am looking forward to seeing the first Kooikers walking the green carpet in 2019, since the closing date for this year s show was in December 2017, and we missed this year by a hair. This brings me to another point. The rules at AKC dog shows are a little different than those at the FSS shows we have attended until now, and all of us need to make ourselves very familiar with these rules. It would be advisable for you to always have a Breed Standard booklet with you. Also, make sure you speak to the ring steward and find out if they have a table, since the Kooikers are registered as a table breed with AKC. Our 2018 Annual Event will be held during the Kentuckiana Cluster Dog Shows, March 14 to 18 in Louisville, KY. This is our first event since Kooikers have been fully recognized, and we will see a number of representatives from the VHNK (Dutch Club) and maybe others. We really would like to see you there. Let s come out in droves and see what Show Chair Jennifer Methlie and her committee has in store for us. Also, please visit our Facebook Auction. There are possibilities for you to donate items for you to bid on some really exciting items, such as a Dutch dog breed book, handmade jewelry, unique dog leashes, and more. Proceeds all go to KCUSA. Finally, to members breeding Kooikerhondjes, please, please fill out the breeding forms and send those with the requested pictures to our breeding committee. It is very important that we receive these forms and pictures to properly send this material to the Netherlands and keep our unique history complete. The needed forms are available from the KCUSA website. Jac M Knoop President KCUSA 2012/14, 2014/16, 2016/18

Canine Influenza Virus: What You Should Know courtesy of North Central Veterinary Emergency Center of northwestern Indiana IN MARCH 2015 AN OUTBREAK OF CANINE INFLUENZA VIRUS (DOG FLU) STRUCK the Chicago area and quickly spread to northwest and north central Indiana and southwest Michigan. Many dogs were sickened and some died. The illness has continued to spread since then and each year, beginning in March, we see an increase in the number of cases. Fortunately, there is now a vaccine to protect dogs from both strains of the virus found in the United States. It is administered in two doses two-four weeks apart. Unlike the human vaccine, the Canine Influenza Virus vaccine is highly effective when properly administered. It may take up to two weeks after the second dose to be entirely effective and is considered to be effective for one year. Now is the time for owners of dogs who may be at risk for contracting Canine Influenza Virus to get their dogs vaccinated. What dogs should get the vaccine? "Social" dogs who visit areas that other dogs frequent are at a higher risk of contracting the dog flu. Talk to your veterinarian if your dog visits places such as: dog parks and beaches boarding facilities grooming salons doggy day care elevators or stairwells in multi-dog apartment or condo buildings If your dog is highly social or frequents the places mentioned above, your veterinarian may recommend the Canine Influenza Virus vaccine. If your primary care veterinarian doesn t carry the vaccine, they may refer you to our clinic. You will need to schedule an appointment in advance at either of our North Central Veterinary Emergency Center locations in Highland and Westville. How is the virus spread? Canine Influenza Virus is a serious respiratory illness that spreads easily. It is transmitted through saliva or nasal fluids. It is often spread through: barking coughing sneezing 4

The virus can also be transmitted indirectly through inanimate objects for up to 72 hours after contact with an infected dog. It is commonly spread on toys food and water bowls crates and bedding floors and carpets people s hands, clothing and shoes Most dogs who encounter the virus will become infected. About 20% of dogs will not show symptoms, but they can still transmit the virus. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of Canine Influenza Virus include dry, hacking cough discharge from nose or eyes fever lethargy lack of appetite Serious cases are accompanied by an extreme fever, labored breathing and pneumonia symptoms. What if my dog shows symptoms? Contact your veterinarian immediately. Most dogs infected with Canine Influenza Virus will require medical attention, up to and including hospitalization. Dogs can be contagious for several days prior to showing symptoms and up to 24 days after the initial infection. During this time, they will need to be isolated from other dogs and cats, as cats are susceptible to one of the strains of the virus. 5

Beware of Puppy Mills It has come to the attention of the KCUSA Board of directors that with the recognition of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje Breed by the AKC we have also become known by people intent on making a profit from selling Kooikerhondje puppies. Please be aware of this practice and inform your KCUSA Board immediately if you are contacted by suspicious individuals so the Board can take action to prevent this operation as quickly as possible. Remember that the KCUSA (including all members) has been chosen by the AKC to uphold the health and well-being of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje breed and, even more important, to protect the health and well-being of each and all individual Kooikerhondjes. For the KCUSA Board of Directors Jac M Knoop President 6

Congratulations or Hartelijk Gefeliciteerd from the Dutch Kooikerhondje Club On January 12, Sheri DeJan, as Secretary of KCUSA, received this certificate of congratulations from Giny Ludema, Secretary of the Dutch Kooikerhondje club (Vereniging Het Nederlandse Kooikerhondje or VHNK), and a message of congratulations: Dear Mrs DeJan, Our club wants to congratulate the KCUSA for the recognition as AKC member! With kind regards Giny Ludema Secretary 8

Kooikers Join the AKC Sporting Group Hooray! by Arliss Paddock AS OF JANUARY 1, FANS OF OUR BELOVED LITTLE ORANGE AND WHITE DOGS are celebrating a huge milestone: The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is now an AKC recognized breed and has joined the AKC s Sporting Group. This is the result of years of hard work on the part of the breed s devotees and the KCUSA. But what does it all mean, exactly? For those who may be less familiar with participation in AKC dog events and with the breed-recognition process, it can be a little unclear. First, here s some background info from the AKC: The American Kennel Club, founded in 1884, maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world and currently registers 192 breeds, representing a wide variety in size, color, coat, temperament, and heritage. A registered dog of an AKC breed is eligible to participate in many of the more than 22,000 events offered by the AKC and its affiliated clubs each year.... Internationally, there are approximately 400 breeds listed with registry organizations in other countries, but the AKC does not register all of these breeds either because there are too few dogs of that breed in this country, or there is too little interest among owners of these breeds to obtain AKC-registered status. Owners of a particular breed wishing to have that breed registered must first establish an organized national breed club. So for the Kooikerhondje to become a recognized AKC breed, first the national club had to be established with many more steps to follow. The path to AKC recognition: A timeline October 1997: KCUSA formed Bringing together Kooiker fanciers from across the country, the Kooikerhondje Club of the USA (KCUSA) was formed in October Next came the task of meeting certain criteria, which took place through years of coordinated efforts. Below is a quick look at some of what was entailed. 9

2004: Kooikerhondjes enter the AKC s Foundation Stock Service program (FSS) As well as having a national club, the breed had to have detailed ownership and pedigree records going back a number of generations, as well as ongoing records kept of individual dogs and breedings. This was accomplished through the breed being accepted into the AKC s Foundation Stock Service (FSS) program, the recordkeeping service for breeds that are not yet eligible for AKC registration. January 1, 2008: Kooikers eligible to enter AKC companion events In 2007, the AKC Board approved that FSS breeds meeting certain criteria would be eligible as of January 1, 2008, to participate in a number of AKC companion events such as agility, obedience, and rally trials and coursing ability tests. Kooikers jumped into these AKC competitions right away, KCUSA presidents past and present: Dee Nichols (right), Rod Beckstead (left), and Jac Knoop (center) have been dedicated to gaining recognition for the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje in the United States. making quite a splash with their talent and notable successes. The dogs competing in venues across the country were great ambassadors for the breed, helping to familiarize the U.S. dog world with the Kooikerhondje and its wonderful qualities. July 1, 2015: Nederlandse Kooikerhondje moves up to the Miscellaneous Class Continuing work on the club s part toward eventual recognition included submitting to the AKC various materials including photos of the breed, a written history, and a written breed standard. A booklet was created that included interpretations and explanations of Dutch versus English terms in the standard, illustrated with many photos showing faults to watch out for as well as desired qualities. The club also put together a training program for AKC judges of the breed essential in ensuring that judges are well educated about the breed in order to evaluate it correctly. Once the KCUSA had met a number of the AKC s requirements for breed recognition, including having an active national parent club and a solid base of U.S. breeders and owners, the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje became eligible for Miscellaneous Class conformation competition at dog shows on July 1, The Miscellaneous Class is a stepping-stone designation for FSS breeds that are further along in the recognition process. The class offers a preliminary opportunity for individual dogs to be evaluated in a show setting in terms of how they compare to the breed standard. Miscellaneous Class breeds can compete against dogs of their own breed as well as other FSS breeds to earn Certificate of Merit points; however, they are not yet eligible to receive AKC championship points or titles. 10

While progressing toward full recognition the KCUSA continued to fine-tune the breed standard, an extremely important task. Once the KCUSA was designated as the AKC parent club for Kooikers, the club reaffirmed the commitment that we want to be breeding the exact same dog as in the breed s homeland and to stay very close to the Dutch standard. Toward this end, KCUSA brought in the person who created the Dutch standard to assist the club in finalizing the breed s U.S. standard. We took our English version and looked closely at the possible interpretations of every English word and phrase and how they related to the meaning of the corresponding part in Dutch, with the intent that judging of the breed should be exactly as it would be in the breed s land of origin. The essential point is that the dogs must be recognized exactly as they are in Europe so that over time we would not end up creating, for example, a Kooikerhond who is too large, or a mini Kooiker who is too small. January 1, 2018: Full AKC recognition, breed joins AKC Sporting Group Finally, with consideration of factors including club activity, the number of dogs and litters recorded, and the number of Kooikers participating in events since the breed became eligible for the Miscellaneous Class, a vote was presented to the AKC Board of Directors, and the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje became a fully recognized AKC breed as of January 1, The 192 breeds recognized by the AKC are categorized into seven groups, generally according to the original purpose the breeds were developed for. The groups are Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Non- Sporting, Toy, and Herding. The Sporting Group consists of breeds developed to assist humans in hunting birds of different types, to bring food to the table from setters and pointers who hunt upland game birds such as quail and pheasant, to retrievers who hunt and fetch waterfowl, to spaniels developed to work both on land and in water. The Kooiker, of course, is adept at helping the duck trapper in his home country of the Netherlands, so the Sporting Group is the perfect fit for this talented and versatile breed. AKC s Sporting Group, before the admission of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje 11

What is different now? There are several significant and distinct benefits to the Kooikerhondje having achieved status as an AKC recognized breed. These include: Eligibility to earn conformation championships Kooikerhondjes are now able to participate fully in all the AKC sports for which the breed qualifies, including conformation classes at dog shows, where they can now compete to earn championship points. The Kooiker who wins Best of Breed at conformation shows is also eligible to advance to the Sporting Group and Best in Show competitions. And the KCUSA s national annual shows can now offer the full range of regular AKC conformation classes, with the winners eligible for championship points. Conformation competition serves an important purpose as a proving ground for breeding stock. In conformation, dogs are evaluated with regard to the breed s ideal qualities to determine which individuals might be the best choices to carry on the breed for future generations. A conformation champion is a dog who has been judged as being of superior quality a number of times by experts trained in the breed standard. Getting New AKC Registration Papers for Your Kooiker Now that the Kooiker is a recognized breed, the AKC will be sending out new AKC registration papers for all dogs aged 5 years and younger. Instead of saying Foundation Stock Service on the slip, it will read American Kennel Club Registration Certificate. For Kooikers over 5 years old, owners can contact the AKC s FSS department at fss@akc.org to let them know you have not received a new certificate. If you have a question about your dog s registration, AKC s Customer Service can be reached at (919) , or via here. Pedigree A three-generation pedigree ($25 fee) can also be obtained from AKC if desired; information on ordering pedigrees can be found here. Registration seen as valid by other countries Another important aspect is that with AKC recognition, Kooikerhondjes in the U.S. are now recognized as having valid registrations and pedigree by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), the international federation of kennel clubs that acts as a coordinating body for the recognition of canine pedigrees worldwide. Before full AKC recognition, Kooikers bred in the U.S. (and their offspring) were generally not eligible for registration in other countries. So in a sense they were isolated from the breed s worldwide breeding pool although of course they could continue the Kooikerhondje breed in this country. Now, however, a Kooiker born and registered in the U.S. could travel to another country and be eligible for FCI registration there, and likewise its offspring would be registrable. This means that those Kooikers could be a part of the breed s global gene pool. With the 12

Kooiker having a relatively small population worldwide, this is of vital importance to the breed s future and its genetic health. * * * So the Kooiker breed in the U.S. has indeed seen a significant and beneficial step up as of January 1. Of course, in addition to the increased opportunities in conformation competition, throughout the year our extraordinarily talented Kooikers will also continue to participate and excel in a wide range of companion and performance events. Most of all, of course, they are our cherished and beloved canine family members. Hooray for the Kooiker! May we all do our best to continue to ensure a wonderful future for this amazing breed. Arliss Paddock is a proud Kooiker owner and KCUSA member and has been a participant in dog events for many years. She is Senior Editor of the AKC Gazette the AKC s longtime official journal of the sport of dogs. 13

Harvey Bringing home my new Kooiker puppy in June 2016 was full of exciting possibilities. I was interested in conformation dog shows but knew little about them. Harvey and I joined handling classes when he was four months old. As the AKC recognition date approached, I wanted Harvey to be part of KCUSA history. The first postrecognition local show was The Kennel Club of Palm Springs, one of the biggest shows in the country. Harvey s first group win at Palm Springs Kennel Club, over the first weekend in January, was thrilling. In January 2018, Harvey won in Open All-breed competition and finished his AKC Championship on Saturday, February 3, 2018, in Fresno, California, becoming the first male Kooikerhondje Champion. Marlene Valter Waterbound Everything Harvey VD Golden Gate Harvey taking home Best of Breed (with handler Louise Brady) Ati After the Rainier Sporting Group show (after being a bit naughty while gaiting), Ati got her act together and was a perfect lady for the next two shows, gaining points towards becoming an AKC champion. She competed on Saturday, at the Puyallup Dog Fanciers Association, under judge Mareth Kipp, and on Sunday with an entry of five Kooikerhondje bitches (at the Gig Harbor Kennel Club, judged by Michael Faulkner). Ati was handled by young rare breeds expert Chris Nelson. Susan van Dyke Ayla Ati Thamy Von Fantsieschloss Ati in the ring. Ati with ribbons from the Gig Harbor show. 16

Casper On January 13th, Casper and I were first in the ring at the Puyallup Valley Dog Fanciers show in Puyallup, Washington (the 2nd day of a four-day show at the state fairgrounds). Casper turned two exactly a week prior and this was our first local show since gaining full recognition January 1st, so we wanted to be part of this historic day! The Kooikers had a lovely entry of five bitches and one dog under judge Mareth Kipp. We also had a great time in the NOHS ring! The regular Sporting Group didn't go quite as well but we surpassed my 2018 conformation goal in a single day, so we went home happy! 18 Shaping the Future: KCUSA Board Elections ON JANUARY 6 KCUSA SECRETARY SHERI DEJAN NOTIFIED club members by of the Nominating Committee s slate for the 2018 Board Member Elections. The positions of president, treasurer, and two directors are up for election. They will serve a two-year term: March 31, 2018, through March 29, The Nominating Committee put forward the following slate: for President: Jennifer Methlie for Treasurer: Mike Malmstead for Directors: Lucinda Paganin, Marlene Valter Nominations from the floor were invited but none were made. A sample ballot follows the candidate bios. Actual ballot will arrive by in a Kooiker Kibble. At the time, please respond quickly so that the new board is ready to assume its responsibilities on April 1. Candidate Bios Jennifer Methlie candidate for President I ve had dogs in my life since I was a child, but I only got involved in dog stuff when I started training and competing in obedience with my little Aussie, Sydney. When I decided I was ready for a second dog, I knew I wanted a cuddly, smart, smaller dog to continue showing in obedience. After a lot of research, talking with people and learning about different breeds, I discovered the perfect breed for me in Kooikerhondjes, and my sweet boy, Brinker, came into my life. I was hooked. A few years later Brinker and I enjoyed adding Haarlee to our family. Brinker and Haarlee are great ambassadors for our breed. We all enjoy showing the versatility of Kooikers as we show in conformation, FastCat, barn hunt, agility, obedience, and rally. Jennifer Methlie In my other life, to support my dog habit, I work as the IT manager at a research institute at the University of Colorado in Boulder. I am excited to be involved with our breed this year as we reach full recognition with the AKC. It is a wonderful opportunity to promote these beautiful little dogs, while taking care that they are bred with a careful eye toward health and temperament and their original purpose of a working companion. 18

I have previously worked on our board as a director, worked on our constitution committee, and helped coordinate several of our annual show events. While I m still learning about AKC s processes and expectations, I have a good understanding of the work it s taken to get our breed to this year s milestone of full recognition. And I believe my background as an engineer and manager can help our club as we continue to evolve and grow as the organization representing and advocating for our beloved Kooikers. Mike Malmstead candidate for Treasurer Mike is relatively new to the Kooikerhondje breed but feels he made the right choice when he and Patty acquired Louie (Amazing Fortuin Van Den Iserman Hoeve) in Mike has been working with Louie, attending obedience and agility training for over a year now. He hopes to show others the great potential of this breed of dog and promote awareness when able. Mike has considerable experience with nonprofit organizations. He founded the Quad City Parrot Head Club in The QCPH Club mission was to help raise funds for other charitable organizations like elderly assistance groups, at risk youth organizations, animal welfare centers, homeless shelters, etc. He was the QCPH president for two years. He has been active in promoting fundraising events, working on parade floats and stage props. He has Mike Malmstead been on the club s administrative board for 14 years. He has also been involved with the financial committee making sure the club stays in compliance with IRS regulations since the club raises anywhere for $30K $50K for local charities each year. Mike is looking forward to helping our organization and plans to be a happy Kooikerhondje dad for years to come. Lucinda Paganin candidate for Director Hi. My name is Lucinda Knoop-Paganin, and I live in Homer, Illinois, with my husband, two young sons, and two Kooikerhondjes. I am a candidate for a Director position on the KCUSA Board of Directors. Those KCUSA members I haven t met personally may recognize my voice, since I work and answer the phone in the office that has doubled as the headquarters of KCUSA for several years. Since 2014, I have done many jobs for the club. Some have been very visible: I ve helped set up and have worked at AKC Meet the Breeds Kooikerhondje booths in Orlando, FL, and elsewhere. I ve helped with hospitality arrangements before KCUSA annual meetings in Gray Summit, MO, Houston, TX, Concord, NC, Greensburg, PA, Perry, GA, and Louisville, KY. I oversaw registration Lucinda Paganin for an AKC-required club Match in Greensburg, PA. Some of my work has been less visible: In early 2015, I joined what is now called the Breeders committee, which oversees reporting of litters to the VHNK (Dutch breed club) among other things. I continue to maintain the 19

ZooEasy records. This is important for supporting a healthy Kooikerhondje population by documenting health issues and keeping the Coefficient of Inbreeding between breeding pairs as low as possible. I offer a trial breeding between two dogs to anyone who has asked. This has helped breeders gain valuable knowledge which may have been otherwise unavailable. I ve have also handled much of KCUSA s social media activity. I have attended many international dog shows and educational events, and maintain friendly contact with a number of international breeders. I speak Dutch, English, and German, and am always ready to facilitate communication between European and North American fans of the Kooikerhondje. I hope you will give me the opportunity to continue advocating for the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje as a member of the KCUSA Board. Marlene Valter candidate for Director I have one kooiker named Harvey. We live with my husband, his border collie, and his dressage horses in Somis, California, which is a very small farming town located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Harvey and I enjoy agility and all-breed conformation dog shows. It has been quite exciting to see our breed join the AKC sporting group. Already, in a short month, I see there is a growing public interest in our little orange and white friends. I appreciate so much the hard work that was done to move our club through Marlene Valter Miscellaneous Group to AKC recognition. But it was hard work. Now it is my turn to give back by supporting the club as we grow in the next two years. I am a Forensic Psychologist by profession. I conduct assessments and expert testimony for legal matters involving mental health. Sample Ballot and Voting Instructions At right is a sample ballot. Look for a Kooiker Kibble arriving by and containing the actual election ballot and voting instructions. Quick responses will be appreciated so that the new board will be ready to begin its term on April 1,

Tulip Time by Marsha Hall BRING YOUR KOOIKERHONDJE AND JOIN US FOR TULIP TIME. What is Tulip Time in Michigan? Each year since 1929, a HUGE celebration known as Tulip Time Festival has occurred. Everywhere you go, you ll see beautiful tulips of all colors and hues, folks dressed in traditional Dutch outfits, Dutch dancing in the streets and of course Dutch food. Tulip Time goes from May 5 13, There are national entertainment acts, various events and activities for all ages, some of Michigan s largest parades and the beautiful views from the shores of Lake Michigan. People come from near and far to be a part of the Dutch celebration. Tulip Time s mission statement is To celebrate Holland s tulips, Dutch heritage and community. As an owner of three Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, I reached out to the coordinators of Tulip Time to see if there might be a fit to include our wonderful Dutch dogs. From my first contact with them, the Tulip Time folks have been VERY excited about our dogs and their owners coming to join the event. In fact, their first response included that they weren t aware there was a Dutch dog. They have extended open arms and are pleased to add Kooikerhondjes to Tulip Time Kinderplaats. This is a place for the kids and their families to learn about Dutch culture, history and heritage. Kinderplaats is free! What can you expect should you decide to join us for two fun-fun-fun-filled days of sharing our gorgeous Dutch dogs with others? We will have a 10 x 10 pop 25

up awning, table, and couple of chairs. I have requested two spaces side by side, and we will have electric outlets available. Everything at this point is a work in progress. We ll set up a TV with the club s Meet the Breed video, hang the club banner, and use the extra space for Kooiker owners to show what they have taught their Kooiker(s) to do. We can have KCUSA membership applications at the booth, and print up Kooiker coloring pages for kids to color and take with them. For those familiar with Meet the Breed booths, this will be like a casual Meet the Breed, with the added twist of showing off Kooiker talents. All Kooiker owners are encouraged to come share your love of the breed. I am open to suggestions as to how our space is used. (We will not be permitted to sell any of our club fund-raising products such as calendars, etc.) Are you planning on joining in the fun? Be sure to send me a message (see box for contact information). I will periodically send out group s with updates as Tulip Time gets closer. All are welcome to come for both days and stay the full time or come one day for part or all of the day. Just be sure to come you don t want to miss out on the NEW and fun Kooiker time. I can see this becoming an annual event for KCUSA FUN!!!!!!!! Tulip Time Kinderplaats May 5 from 11am 5pm, and May 6 from 12pm 5pm This is an outdoor event. 27 Kooikers Enter the Sporting Group and Win 4th Place Booth Prize EIGHT DOGS AND 10 HUMANS CAME TOGETHER ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 to represent the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje at the ninth AKC Meet the Breeds (MTB), held as part of the fourth year that Westminster Week opened with the popular showcase of rare and familiar dogs. January 1, 2018, is an important date for U.S. Kooikerhondjes, as the breed moved from the FSS Miscellaneous group into full AKC acceptance in the Sporting Group. The booth at the start of the day. The KCUSA booth was staffed by Philip and Sheri Dejan and their Kooikers, 4-year-old Escher and 14- month-old Rhett; Rod Beckstead and 14-month-old Bandit; John Hynes and 16-month old Blaise; Janice and Henry Votava with 14-month-old Chase; Lesley Vanderpoel with 10- year-old Bianca and 6-year old Darby; Karen Dean and Nathan Waxman with 6-year-old Dunkie; The booth the rest of the day. and Kooiker admirer Yasue Yang. Rhett and Chase are sons of Escher, and Darby and Dunkie are sons of Bianca. Several of the people and dogs at the Kooikerhondje booth were veterans of numerous Meet the Breeds, and others were enthusiastic newcomers to the tradition. The humans at the KCUSA booth spent the day answering questions, saying Kooikerhondje, and explaining how Kooikers work in the eendenkooi to lure their duck prey. The Kooikerhondjes spent the 27

day in spirited Kooiker play, greeting visitors to the booth, and showing off how smart, agile, and entertaining Kooikers of all ages can be. While the AKC does not announce the exact number of attendees at the MTB, one of the organizers said that this year more than 12,000 people came through the breed booths on the pier. This seemed like a rather low estimate to many of the people working at the booths. The Kooiker booth was one of the busiest and most crowded exhibits on Pier 94. One of the event organizers commented afterward that she had tried to come meet those famous little orange and white Dutch dogs, but the throngs around the booth had discouraged her. We lost track of all the reporters and photographers and videographers who stopped by the booth. Two visitors were from the canine genetics company, Embark, asking for Kooikerhondje owners interested in participating in Kooikerhondje genetics research culminating, eventually, in breed genetics resources. They took saliva swabs of the cheeks of two Kooikers and promised to fill in the owners on details of their dogs genetic health, well-being, and prospective health. You can read more about Embark and its research on the company Website, Janice and Henry Votava hanging out with the Kooiker crowd. Meet the Breed events are opportunities for Kooikerhondjes to meet and play with other Kooikerhondjes. John Hynes holds a leash and Henry and Janice Votaya are seated. Toward the end of the afternoon, a Meet the Breeds official delivered the booth prize, a large white 4th Place Prize, Sporting Group, ribbon. Just wait to see our booth next year! 28

For Breeders: Best Breeding Practices SUMMARY: Members who wish to breed Nederlandse Kooikerhondje should do so with the full understanding of the responsibility they bear to the future of this breed. Breeders are expected to understand the breed standard, the traits in a breeding dog s immediate and extended family, and the application of the principles of genetics. Additionally, breeders should have a practical knowledge of mating; care of the bitch in whelp; the rearing of a litter; and the time, effort, and resources to engage in this activity. 1) Make all breeding decisions to best benefit the breed. The breeding pair must both be in excellent health and free of any major health concerns. 2) Never undertake a breeding unless it is specifically to improve the structure or temperament of the dog that is bred. Breed only if able to distinguish between the correct and incorrect. Such ability presupposes careful study of the breed standard, the basic principles of genetics and the pedigrees of prospective stud and dam. 3) Breed only with full health testing according to the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) as reported to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA): * DNA Testing at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands for hereditary necrotizing myelopathy (ENM) and von Willebrand s Disease (vwd), veterinary examination for Patellar Luxation, eye certification within one year of the planned breeding, OFA Hip certification ** They should also be clear from other serious hereditary defects, so far as is currently known. 4) Ideally, dogs and bitches should be two years of age at first breeding. Bitches should have their first litter before six years of age, and should have their last litter no later than eight years of age. 5) All dogs considered for breeding should attain at least a Canine Good Citizen title from the American Kennel Club. 6) In consideration of the small gene pool, brood bitch and stud dog owners must use restraint and judgment in the repeated use of a brood bitch or stud dog. Care must be used to maintain genetic diversity and breeders should limit the number of puppies produced. 7) Remove from a breeding program any dog or bitch that is known to have repeatedly produced any significant condition that affects the physical or mental soundness of the progeny. This information can be gained only through active involvement and life-time interest in all dogs produced. 8) Repeat breedings of the same two parents are discouraged. 9) A bitch should deliver no more than two litters in any 24 month period. 30

10) Use the stud dog selectively. The stud dog owner should consider explaining why a bitch is refused. The stud dog owner should be certain the owner of the bitch has the necessary knowledge and facilities to care for the puppies as long as it requires to properly place them. 11) Use the stud dog sparingly. Avoid popular sire syndrome by limiting the number of litters the stud dog sires. The use of fresh chilled or frozen semen both from within North America or abroad is a way to maintain genetic diversity. *** 12) Both owner of the bitch and stud dog shall maintain an active interest in each puppy produced for the lifetime of that puppy. 13) Provide the best of care to the litter including: feeding a high quality diet, providing an enriched environment, and appropriate socialization during the entire time in the breeder s care. 14) Appropriate veterinary care should be given, including but not limited to de-worming when appropriate, and vaccinations as advised by veterinarian. Only a healthy puppy is to be turned over to the new owner. 15) Supply the new owner with instructions in feeding and continued socialization. 16) Release puppies to a new home only after the age of eight weeks and identified by microchip. 17) Breeders/sellers should request that owners advise them and the KCUSA Breeding Committee immediately if any diseases or conditions arise at any point in the life of the dog. 18) Encourage every new owner to complete health testing on their dog whether intended for breeding or not and report to the KCUSA Breeding Committee as part of the international effort to improve and maintain health and longevity in the breed. 19) Sell with Limited Registration those puppies sold as pets and not considered to be of show and/or breeding quality. Pet quality puppies should not be misrepresented as show/breeding quality. The Best Breeding Practices are subject to revision by the KCUSA Health and Genetics Committee in conjunction with the KCUSA Breeding Committee. Revisions become effective upon approval by the KCUSA Board of Directors. These advisory practices are designed to stay abreast of the advances in animal genetics and husbandry. They represent the latest current knowledge from researchers both in North America and Europe. References to relevant research articles available upon request. * The potential breeding of any animal with minor abnormalities on health testing should be discussed with the KCUSA Health and Genetics Committee. ENM carriers must not be excluded from breeding programs, but must be mated only to dogs who are tested ENM Clear. ** There are two exceptions to a dog having a CHIC number. First, when using a foreign sire, the sire must have the health clearances required by the country in which he resides. Second if a North American dog is to be used before its second birthday, it must have a preliminary evaluation of its hips done by OFA prior to breeding. *** Consultation with the KCUSA Health and Genetics Committee is encouraged. 31

For Breeders: Code of Ethics AS BREEDERS, we will respect the history and tradition of the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje, and work to protect, promote and safeguard the breed. We have studied the approved AKC Breed Standard and the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje Club of The United States of America Inc. s Best Breeding Practices and strive to abide by the principles described therein. I hereby affirm that I will strive to follow the Kooikerhondje Club of the USA Code of Ethics and KCUSA Breeder s Code of Ethics. I believe breeding purebred dogs involves certain responsibilities and I will not take that responsibility lightly. Additionally, I will: 1. Take full responsibility for any puppies I cause to be produced and agree to take back or assist in re-homing any dog at any point in their life if the owner can no longer keep the dog Report all litters, including registered names and numbers, to the KCUSA Breeding Committee for inclusion in The Dutch Club Register and ZooEasy. 3. Take the necessary safeguards in preventing the breeding of any of my dogs that would result in un-registered or crossbred puppies. 4. Not do a breeding to only satisfy sales demand or for the sole purpose of economic gain nor encourage buyers to regard the breeding potential of a dog/puppy as a business or a way to increase their income Advertise dogs/puppies factually and honestly, both in substance and implication. 6. Not make unverifiable claims regarding the health or genetic status of my dogs, and always include OFA or CHIC numbers in all advertising. 7. Not allow any puppy or litter to be displayed in public places for the purpose of immediate sale, nor sold to commercial breeders, pet dealers, pet stores, pet wholesalers, or pet brokers, nor offered as raffle or contest prizes, or any other type of giveaway or auction. 33 For Breeders: Litter Report January 2018 Dear Breeders, As we all know, the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje is a Dutch breed. The Dutch Kooikerhondje breed club, the Vereniging het Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (VHNK), maintains a worldwide record of every dog reported as well as health and genetic information on these dogs. They have created the attached form (following page) and have asked breeders to fill out this form with their litter information and include specific photographs of the pups. We are sending this to you in hopes that you will participate in our combined efforts to keep the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje breed a healthy and sound breed. The Vereniging Het Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (VHNK) has specifically tasked the KCUSA Breeding Committee to distribute the attached form to all breeders in North America and to help them to collect and report this information. The KCUSA Breeding Committee is willing to assist you with your litter evaluation if possible. You can send a request per to breeding@kooikerhondjeusa.org. Otherwise, you may fill the form out yourself. Ideally complete your evaluations when the litter is 8 weeks old. The breeding committee will keep a copy for our records and forward a copy to the VHNK. Please write out the date of birth to prevent any confusion between the US and European dates (for example: Jan 1, 2018). If you have any questions please feel free to contact the breeding committee at breeding@kooikerhondjeusa.org. Thank you for your cooperation, KCUSA Breeding Committee This information can also be found on the KCUSA website. Go to Breeding and Breeders > Report Your Puppy Litter. 33

For Breeders: On Genetic Variation, Health Issues, and Temperament THE KCUSA HEALTH AND GENETICS COMMITTEE PARTICIPATED in the VHNK Health Symposium in the Netherlands in November The VHNK (Vereniging Het Nederlandse Kooikerhondje), the Dutch Kooikerhondje club, is the parent club for Kooikerhondje associations around the world. KCUSA works closely with VHNK to safeguard the Kooikerhondje breed. Members of the Health and Genetics Committee (chair is Cheryl Short and members are Susanne Martin and Gretchen Wetzel) summarized three sessions, presented here, of interest to Kooikerhondje breeders. 1. VHNK Roundtable Representatives from breeding committees from each country came together to share recent developments in breeding policy and to discuss challenges for the future. Participants from all countries expressed concerns about maintaining genetic diversity within their small populations, including concerns about popular sire syndrome, male subfertility and small litter size. They expressed continued challenges with the testing of breeding dogs for both health issues and temperament. There was a discussion about establishing an international temperament test, such as Finland s kennel club is currently working on. The represented countries differed among traditional ages at which puppies go to their new homes and how much socialization is the breeder s versus buyer s responsibility. Supporting research into polymyositis was a priority for the Dutch, British, and German clubs. The discussion concluded with the suggestion to focus the next Symposium on the creation of an internationally standardized stud dog list. Our KCUSA delegation presented a list of challenges including: distance between breeders and access to potential sires males that are sterile or have early decline in fertility small litter size popular sire syndrome need for a requirement for a temperament test before breeding repeat breedings when our population base is so small need to disseminate all health information and litter information to the VHNK and American breeders need for breeders to clearly establish goals for each litter produced need to approve the Breeder s Code of Ethics Overall the three key challenges faced by all countries were genetic variation, health issues, and temperament. 37

Clubs reported that in 2016 their biggest achievements came in the areas of adopting or refining breeding regulations, education, and reporting/documentation. Then followed a presentation on ZooEasy and updates the VHNK is working on to streamline and enhance the program. 2. Healthy Dogs, Diversity within Dog Breeds Pieter Oliehoek started his talk by defining what a breed is. This includes required breed properties (health, appearance and behavior), origin and ways to improve our breed (for example that breed standards change regularly and that breeders want to eliminate disease). TAKE HOME POINT: We need to save DIVERSITY. Dog populations are different from all natural and livestock populations. A dog has 20,000 genes but only 100 1,000 determine the breed! Only 5 10 genes have the biggest impact on the phenotype/appearance of a dog. Every animal/dog has about 5 recessive genetic diseases! What is diversity? number of founders (in our breed, there are only 13) unique genes; this is also called founder genome surviving (FGS) frequency of genes aka relatedness; this is also called founder genome Equivalents (FGE) inbreeding The lower the diversity, the higher is the relatedness and the HIGHER the chance for inheritable diseases. When breeders frequently use only a few animals, specific genes will dominate the gene pool. Mr. Oliehoek gave some examples of calculations of inbreeding and of genetic disease in specific breeds. (For example, the mating of a brother and sister equals 25 percent; the mating of a half-brother and half-sister equals 12.5 percent). We need to understand that the average inbreeding in the Kooikerhondje is 34.5 percent due to the small number of founder animals!! Inbreeding depression is shown (besides in occurrence of recessive diseases) in dogs with more sensitivity to the environment due to a lower immune response, and a decrease in fitness (litter size, milk production, fertility and longevity). WARNING: Currently, almost nothing is done to save genetic diversity! It is not enough to limit a breeding pair to a maximum of 3 litters or 15 puppies per dog bitch. 38

RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Make use of more animals in breeding and aim for one-time litters (male and female). 2. Mean kinship (breed for least relatedness). AIM FOR global dog pedigree programs and work internationally 3. Cross breeding (currently not recommended and would require professional oversight). 3. Polymyositis (and HNM) in Het Nederlandse Kooikerhondje Dr. Paul Mandigers discussed the relevance of HMN (hereditary necrotizing myelopathy) and polymyositis (PMN) to breed health. His colleagues at the ECGC (Expertise Centre Genetics Companion Animals) conceptualize development of a breeding app. This app would utilize various resources such as pedigree, molecular markers, health data, show results, etcetera to support estimated breeding values. Contrasting the differences in research cost and details between HMN and PMN, funding is needed to continue the more elusive search for PMN carrier testing. Clinically, dogs with PMN may present with problems swallowing (eating, drinking, salivation) and/or locomotion. Presentation is varied from mild to severe with progression ranging from resolution to reoccurrence to demise. Relying on reported data from the Dutch club registration, approximately 2 percent of dogs are affected with a carrier rate of percent. Roughly 17 percent present under 1 year of age; 25 percent between 1 2 years or age; 11 percent between 2 3 years of age; 11 percent between 3 4 years of age and 36 percent are greater than 4 years of age at time of presentation. Muscle biopsies (the current diagnostic gold standard), reveal variants of lymphocytic polymyositis, eosinophilic (lymphocytic) polymyositis and granulomatous histiocytic polymyositis and various combinations exist with mild to severe symptoms. Recognition of mild cases can be difficult with elevation of CK (creatine kinase) suggestive but not diagnostic of disease. Because of the differing presenting phenotypes, treatment has ranged from supplements to corticosteroids, to spontaneous resolution with varying responses. Currently there is no genetic test. Research has identified a region with four important genes. Use of genetic sequencing has shown two of the genes to be abnormally up-regulated in PMN. However, it is complex, as heterozygous dogs can get sick while a few homozygous dogs remain healthy. Ideally, research would allow for identification of phenotypic dogs, heterozygous dogs and controls. The anticipated cost is 10,000 to 20,000 Euros, with 50,000 Euros having already been expended. Continued funding and support is needed to solve this complex genetic issue. 39

Huck s First Family MR. STAN TOLD ME THAT YOU WANTED MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FIRST PUPPIES BORN to Heidi (Daizi) and myself (Huck). This is how I remember the day my puppies were born: If I got within six feet of the whelping box, I was thankful that the whelping box had a panel high enough that Heidi couldn t get to me. She (Heidi) would bark and growl so loud that I slinked as close to the couch as I could, hoping the color of the couch would help me blend in with it, but no she would always see me and made me feel like an invader. I remember Ms. Judi and Mr. Stan talking about the first puppy born, and they said that Heidi didn t have a clue what was lying on the birthing pad behind her. Mr. Stan had to clear the birth sac and cut the cord and then breathe into the puppy to get it breathing. What a good influence he was to Heidi, because she learned how to be a good mom by the time the third puppy was born. He took the puppies and put them in her face, so she could catch on that she needed to clean the sac from their noses so they could breathe, and cut the cord off. Ms. Judi and Mr. Stan took pictures of each puppy, weighed each one, and placed them in a basket with a heat lamp. Mr. Stan and Ms. Judi had decided to give all the puppies names that started with the letter H, after Heidi and myself. I think only one of our puppies kept their given name and that s ok with me. I m sure their new parents had favorite names, like Heidi s given name was Daizi. Heidi was a watchful mama. The puppies weighed in from 257 to 222 grams. Learning to pose for the camera: This is my best side, except for my other best side. 40

When the bunch was born I kinda thought, at first, I didn t exist anymore because all they talked about was Heidi and the two boys and five girls. They thought it unusual that there was this ratio of boys to girls and seemed pleased about the number of girls. The puppies weighed in from 257 to 222 grams with an average of 240 grams. They grew so fast that by the time they left they averaged 111 ounces. If I remember what I was taught at puppy classes, 111 ounces equals 3,108 grams. Some other things about my puppies are: They were born on September 7 in the afternoon; they opened their eyes at 12 days and started getting teeth at 16 days. They started eating ground-up puppy kibble bolstered with dried milk for puppies soaked in water to a gravy consistency for three weeks before they got dried Taste of the Wild Pacific stream formula with smoked salmon. They were dewormed at five weeks, and got their puppy shots and microchips at six weeks. I remember Mr. Stan and Ms. Judi talking about when the dark of the moon would be and that was exactly six weeks after the puppies were born. I don t know what s in their head but Mr. Stan says that weaning would be go smooth if the kids were weaned at the dark of the moon. It must work because there was nary a peep from the kids. I remember Ms. Judi bemoaning about the puppies getting bigger because when she started trimming their nails at five weeks it was easy but at eight weeks they were so squirmy it tried her patience. Oh I almost forgot a very important fact, that being Ms. Judi had water in front of the puppies at day 17. She and Mr. Stan would like to know if this is proper timing. At day 49, Jac and Ann K came and gave the kids their Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test. Mr. Stan had always said the first born, Huxley, should go to Karen P, our club VP, and the test showed the same. The rest of the kids tested more calm in personality. A little history about where all the kids ended up: Huxley (now Tijs) went to Washington State with Learning to pose: You want me to just stand still?!? Tijs now lives in Washington state with Karen. Toby now lives in Florida with Yesenia and meets cute babies. 41

Karen P; Harley (now Toby) lives in Florida with Yesenia B; Haylee moved to Ohio with Chris C; Heather (now Tinker Bell Heather) went to Massachusetts with Kate R; Haven (now Elle) went to Iowa with Brian and Rhonda L; Hope (now Winnie) moved to Oakville, Ontario, Canada with Desiree D; and Harper (now Hannah) moved to Ohio with Danny and Jenny D. I don t know when I will see the kids again, but Jac, Ann, Mr. Stan and Ms. Judi said they got together and agreed about placement. Mr. Stan says you can read more about Heidi and me and our kids at Kooikernation.com. Proud Dad, Huck Letter from Tijs Dear Mom and Dad, Life is good here in the Pacific North WET. I spent the last couple days in a tiny house digging in the mud and playing with the two big black dogs. My new mom says this will be our new home very soon and I ll have lots more room to run and chase the frizzbee. She took me to a new place today that has whipped cream in a can and then distracted me while I got SHOT! I survived and there was no whimpering or yelping because I am very steady and brave and the pile of whip cream on the floor was fantastic, altho lacking in pumpkin pie... I also Tijs at 15 weeks. sat on the big white scale and I am proud to announce that I am a solid 12.3 pounds. I m holding my own with my new brothers and we wrestle a lot in the living room. Mom has to remind all of us that we re not living in a barn and then we go outside to wrestle s more. Life is good. They feed me and I snuggle in their laps, especially when mom sits in front of the fire box. I love it when she sighs and kisses me on the top of my head and tells me how much she loves me. I m getting better at waiting patiently for my meals and can keep my bum on the floor when I get a cookie. And in January, I will be featured in the AKC Gazette so watch for my pictures! I hope you are being good and staying warm and getting lots of cookies, too. Love, Tijs 42

Dress for Success by Rodney Beckstead Reserve Best in Show: Amazing Gerard Ravenswood van den Iserman Hoeve Marta Beckstead handling. NOW THAT THE NEDERLANDSE KOOIKERHONDJE BREED is in the Sporting Group at the regular AKC shows, there are some basics that exhibitors must know. These suggestions apply to UKC and other shows as well. AKC shows are prestigious events and our dogs are magnificent examples of the dog world. Men it is easy. Proper dress for exhibitors is expected. Coat and tie are expected. You can do as the judge is doing: If the judge takes off his coat, wears a hat outdoors, or wears rain wear, male exhibitors may follow suit. Women It is always more difficult. Wear your Sunday Go to Meeting clothes. Dress up, as this is a special event. Coordinate your outfit to your dog.... Remember, contrasting colors will show off your dog much better than colors that blend with your dog. Colors can be used to attract the judge to your place in line or to hide your dog s defects. Wear shoes that are comfortable and provide good traction on mats or in grass. No heels. They just clank and distract your dog and may disrupt your balance as you move around the ring and turn corners. Properly fitted bras are a must for appropriate support. Short skirts are a distraction to some judges. By all means, bend at the knees, not at the waist, if you need to bend over. Plumberette cracks and hot shots display no self-respect. Floppy skirts are very distracting to your dog. 43

Do not wear sunglasses in the ring. Obey the judge and ring steward at all times. Dress conservatively and be pretty. Think Positive. You are showing the best dog in the show. Yours. Notice everything is wrong: her large hat, her shawl drooping into the dog s face, her long floppy skirt, and look at the footwear. Notice how the color of this handler s clothing emphasizes the dog. Her shoes are light with good traction. Note the handler s suit is a good color for showing a black dog, and provides good cover when a bend over is needed. 44

These men s suits match the dogs. They show good coordination with contrasting pants. What about these? Black dogs with black boots? And spurs? (I m not picking on poodle people.) This handler chose a really nice color for coordination with a black dog. 45
