4 .. Festive Greetings to you all. I think an interesting year with a new Committee who quickly came to find a home for their talents. The Fun Day really was just that and we were delighted to join with The Whippet Club at their venue with the resulting happy, well supported day enjoyed by both breeds. There was something for everyone, the fire engine being a great success- boys and their toys! The previous weekend I had had the privilege of judging our championship Show. November had the Open Show and the following weekend the Judging Seminar. Your Officers and Committee have been hard at work as none of these things happen like magic! I do have to thank the husbands, wives, relatives and children who find their weekends occupied moving chairs and selling raffle tickets. Our long suffering secretary who finally fell off her perch- get well soon. Our treasurer, suffering from a very bad back- the same good wishes and Francis Hickman who found herself Queen of the Kitchen at Brailes- thank you so much. I nearly forgot Discover Dogs in London, tiresomely it clashed with the Open show, thanks to Simon who gave up the Show and braved the crowds to do the first day, several of the committee joining him on the second day- now that is a long weekend. The Italian Greyhound is still on the I want one now! list. I saw today on Pets 4 Homes 11 IG s for sale, not a happy situation. We acquired the energy and talents of Liza- Jane who produced the Summer Bulletin, very colourful and a good read- she is slowly discovering we do not understand deadlines! She also inherited the web site which she updates with the show news a clever girl indeed. Italian Greyhounds have been very well represented in the show ring at Group level, Russell Hodges and Enzo have had a wonderful year followed closely by Helen Lister and Scarlett sharing the Best of Breed spoils so lots of press coverage and photographs Some new champions and one or two new kids on the block who will make next year keenly looked forward to. I wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Linnet Loh

5 As we approach the end of 2013 I think we can be happy with the progress of the Italian Greyhound Club. We have held three very enjoyable Shows, an extremely well attended Funday combined with the Whippet Club & most recently, a week after our last Show, a very successful Seminar. The committee are very grateful to our member Liza-Jane Lacey for compiling our News Bulletin & regularly updating our Website despite having enormous work commitments. Frances Hickman has kindly taken charge as Cup steward & also did an amazing job of catering for our Seminar. Kay, Sally & Liza have run a very impressive Breed Stall this year, working very hard both making items & then manning the Stall. Thanks are also due to Rebecca Phillips-Griffiths & Bill Dyball for their hard work on behalf of the Club. We are also grateful to Simon Bulpin for organising Discover Dogs at Earls Court in November & Chris Henshall the four days of DD at Crufts. Tracey Lily Creed Powell has kindly agreed to take over writing blogs for the website. As a relatively new owner of IG s I am sure she will bring a fresh view of IG s & their antics. Last but not least thanks to Jimmi & Helen for keeping us updated in DW & our Dogs newspapers. We have a wonderful committee & look forward another successful year. Wishing you & your dogs an enjoyable Christmas & a Happy & healthy New Year, Sue Dunning (Chairman) Well I managed to get the summer edition out and it wasn t a complete disaster which did come as somewhat of a surprise to me I have to say. I hope that this Christmas edition is as well received and that you each find something that you enjoy about it. I have had so much fun creating the bulletins this year as well as updating the website and thank you to all those who have taken the time to contribute in one way or another. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Here's to success for all in bulletin@italiangreyhoundclub.co.uk Liza-Jane Lacey

Next to these two is Jo Sutlieff, who is your caption competition judge and behind us all being silly as usual!!! is Becky Henley who is a member of the committee and responsible for securing the venues for shows Mother of the bride, Celia with Chairperson Sue Dunning Rob Dunning wins the best Manual impression competition for his table

22 As a relative newcomer to the Iggy scene, with just two 14 month old bitches as opposed to the obligatory ten, we were kindly given an out of the blue late night plea from Simon Bulpin to help out on lunch cover for the Discover Dogs 2013 show at Earls Court on the 9th of September. Now, as anybody who has the pleasure of owning dogs, let alone Iggys will understand, is that any outing of any kind involving dogs and especially these little monkeys always meets with some trepidation. The familiar questions always nag at the back of my head...how do I avoid the dreaded car sickness? Where are they going to poo? Are they going to wee on someone's lap? Who will they tongue attack next? How many of Liza's coats will they need? Which collar to wear, the plain understated leather or the diamanté encrusted martingale? And it goes on...this is even before I remember to get dressed myself or risk turning up in my Pyjamas, again! Saturday dawns in glorious sunshine but as soon as I need to get the dogs in the car it decides to blow a gale and rain sideways (just as well I decided against the mascara for dogs option?) We begin our journey amidst the usual scratching and whining and eventually get to the event after the sat nav takes me on a detour of South Wales...and we live in Berkshire. We arrive at the event and park miles from civilisation, as always. I think sometimes, it pays to be fashionably early. As soon as we debunk in the rain from the car, we are greeted with skidding cars, pointing fingers and smiles and waves from passers by...everybody loves these dogs! Once in the venue, we wade through admirers, strokers, patters, ooers and aahers all the way to the stand, adorned with Sheila s lovely pics and finally see Simon and Eliza eight deep in dog lovers. This is going to be mad! Our two dogs are instantly whisked away into the arms of small girls and boys, middle aged welly wearers, old ladies with twin sets and are hugged, kissed, nuzzled and generally cooed over by literally hundreds of awaiting fans. They even make an orderly queue to get a go! I have never seen the like. After an hour or so of searching we finally get the dogs back from the masses and go on a tour of all the amazing food, clothing, toy and specimen dog booths that this event has to offer. I think, even if I were dog-less, this event would be high up on the list. Stall holders, animal owners and event staff are brilliant, dedicated and most of all helpful. This is a great day out for all the family even if you are not in the market for a pooch of your very own. After trying lots of delicacies, choosing their own toys off the stands and being stopped every five seconds for even more strokes and cuddles we head back to the stall for yet more love.

23 The afternoon stint is yet more manic and this carries on way into the day with not much of a break for anybody. I think the You Tube sensation of Jenna Marbles and Kermit the dog has really caught the imagination of everyone interested in this breed and I think all her one million plus followers have made an appearance at this 3m by 3m box today! We are exhausted...and everyone's jaw is aching from all the smiling and chatting away needed to appease the masses and their thirst for knowledge. We finally begin to pack up at four and in between dwindling fans we escape into the car park once more. It has been an amazing day that we would attend again without hesitation, if asked. I do however, really need a year off first as all of our 8 legs are very weary. The night closes in and the pups fall into their car transporter into quick deep sleep. As we drive away it suddenly occurs to me that not once throughout the day, did a single person once accuse my dogs of being whippets! All the good work of the Iggy club is definitely paying off. Justin, Tracey, Peroni and Juno Bright Gay Bird and Simon Bulpin at the booth

24 ACCREDITED BREEDER TO ASSURED BREEDER I know this subject opens a whole can of worms!! I am not writing to debate the whys and ware falls, everyone has their own personal and different opinions of the scheme, this is to tell of our experience with the scheme form the start. We are Angie & Leon Steed ( Gianni ) When the Kennel Club announced the Accredited Breeder scheme back in 2004 we could see that it seemed to be the way forward for breeding of pedigree dogs in the UK. We joined on 6 th April 2004 and were among the founder members. Although the KC had the right idea, for us there were too many loopholes and we felt the name was being used in inappropriate ways and sadly after 3 years we wrote to the KC and explained why we were unhappy and resigned. We received a nice letter by return explaining that the scheme had been designed to evolve and develop and even if we remained outside the scheme would we continue to offer ideas which would help to improve it and also at any point in the future if we would like to re-join to contact them to do so. By early 2010 we felt things had improved enough for us to re-join and before our request was approved we were visited by one of the KC's official Advisors on 27 th April Our visit went well and the advisor was polite and efficient, she wanted to see the dogs of course as well as the quality of feed we were using and the preparation area etc. I remember she was surprised we had a fire extinguisher on the wall as well as a first aid kit (actually a bathroom cabinet ) just for the dogs. After looking at my files and records she left to write her report. On 28 th May 2010 we received our letter of acceptance back onto the scheme. On Friday 2 nd August this year we received a phone call late pm to ask if a KC Assured Breeder assessor could visit us on Tuesday 6 th August and of course we were happy to say yes as we welcome visitors. It was a very different experience to our first,it was much more official and demanding!! This pleased us no end as we could see just how far the KC had come in a short time to improving things to be nearer to what they should be although we still feel the assessors should just arrive without any warning to any member of the scheme Anyways our report came back as such: IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED...NONE FURTHER OBSERVATIONS...NONE

25 Since this visit we have contacted the Kennel Club to have put on our records that notice need not be given to visit us they are welcome to call any time. And the difference between an Accredited Breeder and Assured Breeder, well Accredited breeders were visited by Advisers Collins English dictionary says Advisor is a person who advisor's a subject specialist who advisers Assured Breeders are visited by assessors Collins English Dictionary says an assessor will judge the worth or importance and estimate the value Thank you to Angie Steed for this article

34 The Seminar took place on the 17 th November at Brailes Village Hall, It catered for both those interested in our lovely breed, and wanting just to learn more about the Italian Greyhound, and aspiring judges who wished to be examined with a Hands On session, followed by a placing of 5 dogs and writing a crtitique. The morning started with a very well presented extended introduction of the breed standard, given by Dr. Russell Hodges. This was followed by a question and discussion period in which several candidates took part. This part of the seminar completed, the attendees were split into 4 groups, and visited a dog and Instructor, who were responsible for analysing the various parts of the body, and the movement of the Italian Greyhound. Lunch followed, after which those not wishing to complete the day were presented with their attendance certificates and departed, better in their knowledge of the I.G. than when they arrived. After lunch, the 3 Assessors, Sue Dunning, Shirley Vincent and Tony Allcock, examined the 5 dogs that were to be judged, and made their placings. The candidates then went over the 5 dogs and made their notes. They, then watched all 5 dogs moving. It was, then time to write their critiques, and present this, with their placings, to the Assessors. There were eight who took the Hands On assessment, and 4 of them gained a Pass. During the day, Frances Hickman very kindly provided refreshments, including a very palatable buffet lunch, for which the committee would like to thank her and her helper Rob Dunning.
