3 Notices Complaint from Dogs NSW Please note that the League has received a complaint from Dogs NSW regarding a German Shepherd person driving their car around the grounds with a German Shepherd in tow. This practice is DEFINITELY NOT ALLOWED - it is very dangerous and especially so in the heat we have in Sydney today. It has also left tyre indents embedded into the ground. If you know anyone who does this would you please advise them that this is NOT ALLOWED. Naturally this will be announced at our next training sessions and will be on our website. Frances McAdam Obedience Instructor s Course We are looking for Expressions of Interest from members for a planned Obedience Instructors Course commencing in mid February Please advise the Secretary, Fay Stokes on Ph: Mob: or faystokes1@bigpond.com Change of National Judge Due to Margit Van Dorrsen being appointed to judge at the Sieger show this year, she had to relinquish her appointment to judge at the 40th GSDCA National Show and Trial. After several judges being contacted, Herr Albrecht Woerner was contacted and agreed to attend the 40th National. Herr Woerner last judged a national in A and Z Stamps Please note that the A&Z cannot be used after a dogs name unless it has been xrayed through the National Council Schemes. If you have an animal xrayed through the BVA you CANNOT use the A&Z stamp when entering shows or trials. frances@bigpond.net.au CAN YOU HELP US The Welfare & Rescue Group is in need of dog lovers to assist in transporting German Shepherd Dogs from various pounds to boarding kennels and also from boarding kennels to have their vet work done. This work is not suited to those who are actively breeding. But if anyone has a few hours to spare each week and would like to join our group in assisting dogs in desperate need, we would love to her from you Foster carers are also needed. 4 PRESIDENTS REPORT SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2009/2010 Welcome to the first issue of Shepherd News for There have been a few changes since late last year. It is with disappointment that I announce that both the Campbelltown and Cumberland Branches are ceasing operations. Apart from diminishing attendances, there are fewer people willing to raise their hand to devote their time and expertise to taking up an organisational role. David Kilner is moving to Queensland to enjoy his retirement. He has been associated with the Cumberland Branch since 1977 and was a chief instructor/branch Manager since David also ran the League s Tracking Trials for many years and was the Public Officer for the GSDL up until David has been a very dedicated member of the GSDL and has always assisted in any way he can. He is a Life Member of the League and was recognised for the 34 years of dedicated service with a GSDCA Service award at our Nationals in I wish him all the best and good health in his retirement and thank him for his dedication to the German Shepherd Dog and the GSDL. Deborah McCormack has been the Branch Manger for a few years now and has done a great job with the Campbelltown Branch. With the AFL establishing itself in this area, the Campbelltown City Council wished to move us on to a substitute training ground to utilise our training ground for the AFL. Due to the limited numbers in attendance and again, no one wishing to take on any of the organisational roles, the branch has become disappointingly unviable. I thank Deborah and the trainers for their efforts with Campbelltown. All training will now be done at the Erskine Park Branch, which has grown in attendance. The acceptance of the long stockcoat German Shepherds is now official. There will be identification times held so that long coats can be identified by our Breed Surveyors prior to approval for transfer to the applicable long coat register with Dogs NSW. A press release from the ANKC is within this newsletter. The Sydney Pet and Animal Expo for 2012 is being held on the 18th and 19th of February. This clashed with the breed survey date on the 19th. This survey will now be held on Saturday 25th February. If there is anyone that would like to help with manning the stand over this weekend please contact our secretary. Our Demonstration Team will be on display and I am sure they would appreciate your support over the weekend. Whether it is to help or just cheer during their routines. MR. MALCOLM GRIFFITH Malcolm s interest in GSD started when he was 11 years old in 1967 when his father took him to watch an all breeds championship dog show in Birmingham.

9 MR. MALCOLM GRIFFITH Malcolm s interest in GSD started when he was 11 years old in 1967 when his father took him to watch an all breeds championship dog show in Birmingham. He was immediately taken with the GSDs he saw and within a week had bought himself a pet quality bitch. His interest grew and his father supported him by buying several so called show dogs. His first show stock came from well known kennels of the time such as Norloch, but his first attempts and breeding were quite successful and his 3 rd litter produced the UK Champion Bedwins Caroline. He went on to breed 8 UK champions, and has owned a further 13, with another 5 being exported before certainly gaining their UK titles. His first visit to Germany was in 1974, where his outlook on the breed was transformed. He came home from that show, which was held in Mannheim and started to save for his first imported bitch Anja Vom Komtureihof in or about By the age of 16 he had judged his first Open Show for the GSD Club of Devon and at 20 was an approved Championship show judge, and judged his first championship show for the same club alongside Walter Martin of the Wienerau kennels. He dedicated himself to every aspect of GSDs from an early age, his hobby became all consuming. He was soon to judge abroad and first judged in Port Elizabeth South Africa, followed by Zimbabwe, and later countries as diverse as India, Taiwan, most Caribbean islands, Scandinavia, Uruguay, Chile, to name but a few. He judged the English Kennel Club s Crufts in He was the first non SV judge to Judge the Australian National alongside Eric Orschler in He has been successful as a breeder, and judge but was also was an exceptional handler. He was the first person to handle Siegerin Vanta V D Wienerau, and regularly handled for Walter Martin, his great friend, until his death. He feels privileged to have handled Walters dogs, including Vanta, Jello, Zamb, and Vaneska to her VA title. He was the first British breeder to produce a continental VA, and regularly competed in Germany and other European countries with his homebred stock. Including Xorro VA in Switzerland, Nikkor VA in Japan, other German sieger show results include Nuschka SG11, Nikkor SG25, Xorro SG11. There are many more. Malcolm previously owned several well known dogs that became famous in Australia such as the National Gold Medal winners, Edensmuir Vital Spark, Celly V Olfener Kirschpiel, Eike V Mons Tabor, Edensmuir Liz s Girl, and medal winners, Vella V Haus Wittelsbach and silver medal winners Edensmuir Delaware, other notable examples are Ogus De Colombo, Dirk V Clausenhang, Barry V Status Quo as well as the top producer Bedwins Siegfried and his litter mate Siegaro. He has been a frequent visitor to Australia and New Zealand during the 80 & 90 s either as a handler or judge. He regularly handled all over the world for leading kennels. He is married with two children Diego (19yrs) and Lorenzo (8yrs) and spends his time in between Chile, Colombia and England. 9

10 Rally O WHAT IS RALLY O The chief objective of Rally is to provide a fast moving and motivational sport for both handler and dog in basic obedience exercises without requiring exact precision for success. It gives older dogs an opportunity to remain active and is also excellent for shy or anti social dogs 10

11 FEATURES OF RALLY O Each dog and handler complete the same course Each team is timed for the time taken to complete the course A course consists of 10 to 20 stations Each station is a sign which gives a diagram of what action the team must perform The number of stations depends on the level of participation Is scored by a judge who watches for a smooth performance as well as skill in following the directions at each station Handler may talk to the dog, give signals, pat their leg, clap hands etc. Food and toys cannot be used in the ring All competitors get a 10 minute walk through of the course before competition starts and a course map is posted outside the ring Once the judge says forward the judge gives no other commands CLASSES RALLY NOVICE All exercises are done on a lead [which must be loose at all time] Team attempt between 10 to 15 stations A qualification is a minimum score of 70 points out of a 100 [3 qualifications = Title] RALLY ADVANCED For dogs that have attained their Rally Novice title All exercises are done off lead Team attempt between 12 to 17 stations and includes 1 jump Maximum height of a jump is 400mm for the bar/solid jump and 800 mm for the broad jump Height of the jump is dependent on height of the dog Teams may compete in the Rally Advanced class indefinitely RALLY EXCELLENT For dogs who have attained their Rally Advanced Title All stations are done off lead except for the Honor exercise Team attempt between 15 to 20 stations and includes 2 jumps Teams may compete in the Rally Excellent class indefinitely SCORING Each team starts with 100 points Points are deducted for such faults as missed stations [10] to a tight lead [1] A dog fouling the ring receives a non-qualifying score The full set of Rules and Stations are available on the A.N.K.C website We will be running a Rally O information/training session at the Erskine Park grounds in the near future. Details will be advised when available and also notified on our website. This session will be a brief talk about Rally O and then set up a course for people to bring their dogs and have a go! The best way to learn Rally O is by watching and participating and this promises to be a fun session. 11

16 Heaven s Entrance Exam A Blonde was sent on her way to Heaven. Upon arrival, a concerned St Peter met her at the Pearly Gates. 'I'm sorry, 'St Peter said; 'But Heaven is suffering from an overload of godly souls and we have been forced to put up an Entrance Exam for new arrivals to ease the burden of Heavenly Arrivals.' 'That's cool' said the Blonde, 'What does the Entrance Exam consist of?' 'Just three questions' said St Peter. Which are?' asked the Blonde. The first,' said St Peter, 'is, which two days of the week start with the letter 'T'? The second is 'How many seconds are there in a year'? The third is 'What was the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?' 'Now,' said St Peter, 'Go away and think about those questions and when I call upon you, I shall expect you to have those answers for me.' So the Blonde went away and gave those three questions some considerable thought (I expect you'll do the same). The following morning, St Peter called upon the Blonde and asked if she had considered the questions, to which she replied, 'I have.' 'Well then,' said St Peter, 'Which two days of the week start with the letter T?' The Blonde said, 'Today and Tomorrow.' St Peter pondered this answer for some time, and decided that indeed the answer can be applied to the question. Well then, could I have your answer to the second of the three questions' St Peter went on, 'how many seconds in a year?' The Blonde replied, 'Twelve!' 'Only twelve' exclaimed St Peter, 'How did you arrive at that figure?' 'Easy,' said the Blonde, 'there's the second of January, the second of February, right through to the second of December, giving a total of twelve seconds.' St Peter looked at the Blonde and said, 'I need some time to consider your answer before I can give you a decision.' And he walked away shaking his head. A short time later, St Peter returned to the Blonde. 'I'll allow the answer to stand, but you need to get the third and final question absolutely correct to be allowed into Heaven. Now, can you tell me the answer to the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?' The blonde replied: 'Of the three questions, I found this the easiest to answer.' 'Really!' exclaimed St Peter, 'And what is the answer?' 'It's Andy.' 'Andy??' 'Yes, Andy,' said the Blonde. This totally floored St Peter, and he paced this way and that, deliberating the answer. Finally, he could not stand the suspense any longer, and turning to the blonde, asked 'How in God's name did you arrive at THAT answer?' 'Easy' said the Blonde, 'Andy sat, Andy watched, Andy waited til his billy boiled.' And the Blonde entered Heaven...?... you're singing it now, aren't you!!!!
