Editorial As most of you know we are in the mist of trying to pack everything up for our eventual move to Texas. In doing so Bob the Builder, Birdman & the Arrow was decided the best way to transport the Yellowbird was to put the hard top on. In this, it would be better to lock the car on the trailer during the 1500 mile transport. With all of us working it shouldn t be much of a challenge. On the morning of the first day Bob the Builder set out to find all the parts required to reassemble the hardtop. Of course he knew where the top itself was as it was hanging from the ceiling of the birdcage. The bows were also hanging from the ceiling. He knew were the rear window was along with the roof lining ad the rubber. Now to find the latches. Looking in the box marked top parts all three could not find them. Now, if you have been there, if you want to buy new ones they are not cheap. And so now it goes, the hunt begins. Stay tuned to find out what transpired. May, 2017 page 2

5 advertising it as being a museum. Our GPS said that we were there but we could not find it and drove right by it. We turned around to backtrack a little and sure enough there was Joe waving us to turn into the driveway of the Museum. After about an hour Pete and Mary finally showed up at which time we learned that they were about 10 miles past the turn off on the 91 freeway and had to backtrack. By Ed Zaleski The day started at 8:30 AM where we met at the Carl's Jr. parking lot in Anaheim. The weather was cool and overcast. Irene and I got there first, and shortly after, Pete DePaola and Mary Everett pulled up in their retro bird. Joe and June Lipuma, along with Gary Zimmerman, cruised in and parked next to us as well. We all went into Carl's Jr. for some coffee and breakfast treats. Needless to say, the rest of us had a pretty good laugh when we found out that Pete was there just the Monday before to check it out with Joe. 9:15 AM Joe announced for us to load up and caravan to Bellflower in the L.A. area. This was to be a short trip up the 91 freeway which turned out to be quite busy for a Saturday morning. Needless to say, we all lost track of each other so now we were on our own to make our way to the Los Angeles County Fire Museum in Bellflower. Irene and I quickly programmed the address into our car's GPS which took us on surface streets to avoid the freeway traffic. Our destination was to be a 10,000 sq. ft. industrial type building with no sign The entrance to the museum is free and they also had free coffee and donuts as well. Some of us including myself indulged ourselves. I was quite surprised to see all the interesting fire engine equipment dating all the way back to the 1800's. They are wonderfully restored to operating conditions. We even had a retired Fire Chief give us See Fire Museum continued on page 6 May, 2017 page 5

6 Continued from page 5 a very detailed history of each piece of equipment they had on hand and how they obtained it which lasted about 1 1/2 hours. He also mentioned that a new 20,000 sq. ft. building just up the street is in progress of completion and should be open to the public sometime in January of This will give them much more room to enjoy the wonderful vehicles and memorabilia they have. The building that we were in will be dedicated to storage and restoration of vehicles to museum quality. As can be seen by the photos, this is a must see place for all ages. After lunch and commenting on the sites of the day we then said our goodbyes and departed for home. After we all took in the Museum's offerings we then caravanned down the street to the Golden Corral for lunch. Needless to say, nobody got lost this time. All in all, the museum is a must-see place if you're into how our fire departments work in Southern California. I personally would recommend going again and taking our grandchildren to see these wonderful vehicles on display. May, 2017 page 6

Please respond to any member of the Board of Directors By Rita DePaola Learn the Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off or when a blood vessel bursts. If you think that you or someone else is having a stroke, call 911 immediately. All the major symptoms of stroke appear suddenly, and often there is more than one symptom at the same time. With timely treatment, the risk of death and disability from stroke can be lowered. By knowing the signs and symptoms of stroke, you can be prepared to take quick action and perhaps save a life maybe even your own. Take a few minutes to learn the five major signs and symptoms of a stroke: Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arms, or legs Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding others Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination Sudden severe headache with no known cause If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T and do the following simple test: F Face: Ask the person to smile. 10 Oil Light On By Walt Nuckels The oil pressure warning lamp is just that, a warning lamp. Any time that it comes on and stays on while the engine is running, there is a chance that the engine has no oil pressure and the engine will be damaged. As it turns out, the circuit is quiet unreliable and it can come on and stay on for many reasons. I once damaged an engine severely because I did not want to believe in its warning. I had only about 2 miles to go in or-der to get home and took the chance. The oil pump drive rod had twisted in two and I really didn t have oil pressure. Too bad that I ruined all the bearings in the engine. Fortunately, the oil pressure warning lamp usually fails be-cause it stays on due to the wire going to it shorts to ground. This is usually easy to fix at least temporarily by wiggling or re-positioning the wire. A much more serious failure is when the lamp never comes on. This condition is most often caused by a defective oil pressure sending switch or simply the wire off the switch. If you were to have a real oil pressure failure during a time when the circuit is dysfunctional, you are very likely to damage the engine. The oil pressure warning lamp and the generator warning lamp should be observed to glow every time you turn the ignition switch through the on position and they should both go off after the engine has started. Every operator of these cars should be alert to check the warning lamps every time you start the car. Reprint courtesy Walt Nuckles estate Position of Fan By Walt Nuckels Group, this is an article concerning the cooling system problems of one of my friend s 55 T-Bird. I thought there may be others who could benefit from the article on the Classic-birds group, so here it is below. John, while observing your T-Bird this morning, I noticed that the most basic cause of all your heating problem complaints is caused by the fact that the engine is positioned much too far forward. The fan is stuffed all the way into the fan shroud. The fan should be positioned so that no more than 50% of its depth is in the shroud. Yours is 100% in the shroud. I provide this information so that you may someday be able to fix it. Fixing it is not easy because the exhaust system is the controlling factor controlling the position of the engine. With the exhaust system removed, the engine can be easily moved back to its original position with the only thing that will need to be readjusted being the shifter rod of the shifter. So someday when the exhaust system must be replaced, get the engine moved all the way back as far as it will go. The engine mounts are on elongated slotted holes. No T-Bird with the fan stuffed all the way into the shroud has a chance of being one of the ones that have no overheating problems at all. A fan that is positioned all the way in the shroud can only perform as a screw fan, much as a boat propeller. A fan operating in this fashion is very inefficient. A fan with 20% to 50% of its depth into the shroud performs as a centrifugal fan slinging air off the tips of the blades allowing it to deliver a much greater volume of air through the radiator. 12 Health Tips for May Continued from page 9 F Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? A Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? T Time: If you observe any of these signs, call immediately. Note the time when any symptoms first appear. Some treatments for stroke only work if given in the first 3 hours after symptoms appear. Do not drive to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin lifesaving treatment on the way to the emergency room. Schedule a Check-Up Monday, May 11 is National Women s Check-Up Day and this week is National Women s Health Week. The day is dedicated to encourage women to visit their health care professionals to receive or schedule check-ups. National Women s Health Week encourages women to take simple steps to live a healthier life. Make an appointment with your health provider for a check-up, vaccination, or test. Schedule at least one health screening during May Write down a list of questions to ask your health provider about your health. Take it with you to your appointment, and write down the answers. Tell your health provider if you have noticed any changes in your body, lifestyle, habits, or work that may require changes in medicines, screenings, and health routines. Protect Your Skin Take a few minutes to protect your skin and help prevent diseases. Put on sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher and with both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B (UVA and UVB) protection. Reapply sunscreen after swimming and excessive sweating. Seek shade and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Cover up with clothing and sunglasses. Avoid using tanning beds and sunlamps. Put on insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin to protect from mosquito and tick bites. Take a Break Taking five-minute breaks--whether you sit at a desk, do heavy construction work, or anything in between--can have several benefits. Below are examples of some activities you can do in five minutes or less for rest breaks. Take several short breaks throughout the day (about every hour). Make sure they include some movement. Take a short walk away from your workstation. Stand up and stretch or walk in place at your desk without looking at your computer monitor. Get out of your chair whenever you take phone calls at your desk. Change positions at your workstation. Have a drink of water or a light snack. Celiac Awareness Month May is Celiac Awareness Month. Some 3 million Americans have celiac disease, which means they're unable to digest gluten a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Before you go running off thinking you have this disorder, see your health provider and let them make the determination. The Food and Drug Administration has new guidelines for foods labeled "gluten-free," including a requirement that they contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. Eat More Berries Eating berries can lower your risk of heart disease significantly. A study of nearly 94,000 women found that those who ate three or more servings of blueberries and strawberries a week had a 32 percent lower risk of heart attack. With peak mosquito season here, it's important to remember they spread diseases to humans and animals. Electric fans are an effective way to keep mosquitoes away from people and pets in the backyard. If you're unlucky enough to get bitten, a dab of simple household ammonia will counter some of the chemical reactions that make your skin itch. May, 2017 page 12

13 By Tom Prezdwojewski Press Release: - January 4, 2017, Signal Hill, Calif.: Thunderbird owners will be showing off their iconic Ford vehicles in a first ever Thunderbird Appreciation Day May 21st, The BIG three Thunderbird clubs; Classic Thunderbird Club International (CTCI), Vintage Thunderbird Club International (VTCI) and International Thunderbird Club (ITC) are encouraging their members to take their Thunderbirds out, individually or in groups, to places for the general public to see, to learn more about and to just plain enjoy. This is not an organized car show or meet with dozens of classic makes and models of vehicles said CTCI president Bill Long. Rather, this day has been set aside for owners of Ford Thunderbirds, wherever they may be located, to drive their vehicles to a coffee shop, a diner or park, maybe even to church or to work. Just like these personal luxury automobiles were used originally. We want every Thunderbird owner to get their car out in public adds VTCI president Rod Wake. Sure, they can meet up with others. The important point is to get their Thunderbird out for others to look at, ask questions about and maybe bring back a memory or two! It is surprising how many folks say they remember riding in their parents or grandparents Thunderbird! It shouldn t be surprising though since the Thunderbird was produced over fifty years by Ford Motor Company, from 1955 through With over 4 million Thunderbirds produced during that time, it is still not uncommon to see a Thunderbird on the road today, even later models. This is the reason that the three Thunderbird clubs have agreed on May 21st as a day to appreciate the Thunderbird. We know that our club members will bring out their Thunderbirds, said ITC president Gerard Bartarsavich, but we need to reach that Thunderbird owner that isn t a member of a club. They are just as welcome to bring their Thunderbird out. After all this is about Thunderbirds and giving people an opportunity to see cars they don t usually get to see! For more details go to the CTCI website or the CTCI Facebook page. Thunderbird owners are asked to share pictures and stories that occur during Thunderbird Appreciation Day on the club s Facebook page. Some additional thoughts from the organizers: You may have seen that all three large international Thunderbird clubs have agreed to set aside May 21st, 2017 as Thunderbird Appreciation Day. On this Sunday, EVERY Thunderbird owner is asked to bring their Thunderbird out so that everyone can enjoy these Unique in all the world cars! This does not need to be planned as a car show or be a big event. Just imagine how your Thunderbird would have been used when it was new. May, 2017 page 13

14 Mother s Day: Historical Precursors Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother s Day is the early Christian festival known as Mothering Sunday. Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their mother church the main church in the vicinity of their home for a special service. Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother s Day in the 1930s and 1940s. May, 2017 page 14
