EDITOR S NOTE Another year of training done and dusted! I hope that you had a great time at the club over the past year and that you and your dog(s) have learned a whole bunch of useful things. The Christmas and New Year period have been rather busy for me and so this newsletter is a touch late... but better late than never! I d like to welcome all our new members to the Club, and welcome everyone else back for another fun year. The start of the year is a great time to think about goals for your training, and start to come up with plans to help you achieve these goals. You might want to work on your loose leash walking, recalls under distraction, or achieve a particular title. Just pick a goal and break it down into small pieces and you ll be there before you know it! In January, we ran our summer instructor training for new canine companion instructors. This is always a fun event to be involved with, and I enjoyed getting to know the new instructors during the breaks as I wasn t able to find the time to instruct classes in I m excited to see them out in the paddock and look forward to supporting them on their learning journey. If there is one thing that I ve learnt from dog training... the more you know, the more you realise you don t know! If becoming an instructor is something that you think you d be interested in, please us at bdoc@bdoc. asn.au. We ll be running another session later in the year. Happy training! - Maelyn Cover photo: Franklin the Irish Red and White Setter by Maelyn Draper SCRATCH OUR BACK! BDOC is run exclusively by volunteers. We re always on the lookout for more helpers! 5 PREPARING YOUR DOG FOR AGILITY Written by Fiona Fraser Agility is a fast growing sport that is now being considered as an Olympic Sport! BDOC is having trouble keeping up with demand. We now have a very full triallers class on Monday nights, and our pre-trialling beginners and advanced groups training on Wednesday nights. We hope to start a new foundation group in the later part of the term for those currently on the waiting list who have fulfilled all the entrance requirements. Many of these people have been waiting as long as 6 months for this course. If you are interested in joining agility at BDOC, please make sure you review our entrance requirements on the BDOC website. While it is very important that puppies doe not commence jumping until they are at least 14 months old (preferably not until growth plates have closed), there is much that you can do at home to prepare your dog for agility with a wealth of information and some high quality online foundation courses now available on the internet. Firstly, your dog needs to be able to work reliably off lead. Building a strong relationship with your dog will mean that your dog loves to work with you and that you can control your dog even at a distance. This relationship starts with play. Our companion classes all emphasis the importance of play and toy focus. This is often easy to achieve with puppies but can be hard to continue. Start each training session with play. Sometimes puppies are reluctant to play if teething but keep trying. Make like a bunny running away from your puppy with toy in hand. Attach your toy to a flirt pole most puppies absolutely love to play with a flirt pole. Never tell your dog off for putting things in their mouth. Instead, teach your dog to release things to you with a nice positive cue eg. thank you. Then if they have something they shouldn t have chances are they ll return it to you rather than run off and destroy it. Teaching a strong retrieve also builds toy focus and recall. Have lots and lots of fun with your dog and you will develop a strong relationship with them so that they will want to work with you. Secondly encourage your dog to drive to a target eg. A mat or a traffic cone. Most handlers find it hard to run as fast as their dogs so their dog needs to be able to move away from their handler and follow cues to a distant object. Agility dogs need both a handler focus and an object focus. If your dog is able to drive to an object such as a mat they will have no trouble driving to tunnels and jumps. Thirdly, agility dogs need to be confident walking on unstable surfaces, the see-saw being the most extreme such object. So it is great if your dog can be comfortable on unstable objects. Obviously you should supervise your dog at all times and ensure they can safely navigate any object you want them to try. Never force your dog onto such an object but reward them highly for just putting one paw onto such an object. Gradually grow this until the are confident and happy to get all paws onto an object. Eg. Walking across a low fence, climbing rocks, standing on a balance board or even walking across lounge cushions scattered on the floor and riding in your wheelbarrow in the garden. Finally, agility dogs need to work on BOTH the left and right hand side of the dog. So try to ensure your dog not only heels on the left but is comfortable working on your right hand side as well. If you want to find out more about foundation agility training, or just get to understand the sport a bit more check out some of these souces online: Bad Dog Agility (they have a range of free resources online including podcasts and you-tube videos). Agility Nerd (also a range of free resources) You can also get an idea of just how exciting agility is by looking at some of the international competitions, eg. Crufts, Westminster and the World Agility Championships. 6 OBEDIENCE AND RALLY WRAP-UP Written by Maelyn Draper 2018 was a very busy year for our obedience and rally obedience teams, with many achieving great results in trials in the ACT and NSW. Our numbers in both obedience and rally grew this year. We received sufficient interest from new teams that we were able to run our very first obedience foundations intake class, in addition to two rally obedience intakes. The obedience and rally intakes aim to teach both the handler and the dog the skills necessary to compete in the entry levels of either sport. These skills include competition-style heelwork, body positions, recalls, the technical details of each exercise, and how to work under distraction. Our foundation teams have made really great progress over the year, and some have even started to enter trials! We look forward to further developing their skills and to sharing their trialling successes in the future. On the trialling front, our club has been well represented at local trials and in the NSW. Some highlights include Elaine Temby and Haylen (Dual CH (RO) Neut CH Watervaal Winfrey Konexshun CDX RAE ET) achieving their Rally Obedience Champion title, which requires 10 passes over 90 (out of 100) in the Rally Master ring. Anne Lewis and Delilah (Neut Ch Landmark Why Why Why Delilah RE ADX JDX JDO GD SD SPD) finished off their Rally Excellent title, and Karen Hobson and Abby (Lifesong Out of the Abyss CCD) began their obedience trialling career and took out the highest score trophy for CCD and Novice! Many of our beginner and trialling teams accomplished achievements including first quallies, first places, and improved engagement during training. It was a great year of training for both obedience and rally obedience, and I am so proud of the supportive and fun training community that we have built. This year we were pleased to award our Rally Obedience Dog of the Year award to Jenny O Connor and her Golden Retriever Chillee (Goldtreve Sweet Chilli Jam CCD RE). Jenny and Chillee have had a stellar year in the rally obedience trial ring, starting in Rally Novice and ending up in Rally Master (the 4th and highest level). They have also taken out the awards for the highest scoring team in Rally Novice and Rally Excellent for the year. Our Obedience Dog of the Year was awarded to Geoff Woodman and his Golden Retriever Hamish (Neut GrCh Caerhays Glen Hamish CD RAE AD JDX JDO2 GD SPD SD), for their success in the Companion Dog Excellent (CDX / Open) obedience ring. It s not just the dogs that have been training hard this year! Two of our instructors, Niccola Hardaker and Cheryl Neal, have been busy undergoing training to become obedience judges for Community Companion Dog (CCD) and Companion Dog (CD / Novice). The judge s training is extensive and involves a number of theoretical and practical components. We wish Niccola and Cheryl all the best for the rest of their training and assessments! As always, I must say a big thank you to my fellow obedience and rally obedience instructors and organisers. Anne Lewis deserves a special mention as she has taken on the bit task of organising the rally obedience trialling class (thanks!) so that I was able to focus on the new teams. Thanks to all the rally obedience triallers who always help set up and pack up the courses, and to Cheryl and NIccola for helping me with the foundation groups and for always being available for me to bounce ideas off them! I d like to wish all the obedience and rally obedience teams the very best for I hope you smash your training and trialling goals for the year, whether it s to finish off a title, get into the ring for the first time, or to have an awesome year of training! 9 DANCES WITH DOGS REPORT Written by Angela Hagedorn It s been a fun year at Dances with Dogs with a continuing solid core of participants and some newbies putting their dancing toes in the water. Classes continue to be held at 4pm on Sunday afternoons over summer. BDOC held a double Dances with Dogs competition on 22 July 2018 indoors at the Multi Sport Facility in Tuggeranong. This attracted a good number of entries from both interstate competitors and locals with some nice passes gained and several Titles. While a little chilly, particularly for those of us doing several costume changes, the friendly atmosphere warmed everyone up. The assistance of members, particularly from other sports, continues to be very much appreciated. DWD, often combining with members from the Companion Dog Club, performed at several events over the year including Pooch Affair and Floriade Dogs Day Out. The events always attract a good audience and its delightful to hear the oohs and ahs from the audience as the teams show off their moves. Pepper trying to look official at the Floriade Dogs Day Out Michele Pouliot (back row, 3rd from left) with BDOC DWDers Niccola Hardaker (back left), Melinda Ford (front 4th from left) Heather Swinbourn (front 5th from left) and Angela Hagedorn (front 2nd from right). Judge s numbers have remained static with five registered ACT Judges, three of whom are BDOC instructors. All Judges met their training and judging appointments over the year, with Niccola invited to Judge in Brisbane and Angela in Sydney, as well as judging at BDOC/DogsACT competitions along with Cheryl Neal. We hope to run a training session for aspirant ACT judges in Heather Swinbourn has represented DWD on the BDOC Committee over the year. The DWD instructors and participants would like to formally thank Heather for undertaking this role. The official ANKC Rules for the sport of Dances with Dogs were reviewed earlier in the year and changes were approved by ANKC; these changes are available on the ANKC website and will come into effect in Niccola Hardaker has continued to represent DWD on DogsACT (and thereby to the National DWD Committee). Our DWD Dogs of the Year Awards went to: The awesome Michele Pouliot (guide dog trainer and ambassador for over 40 years, obedience champion, regular panel member at Karen Pryor s Clicker Expos, and one of the best canine freestylers in the world - to name just a few of her credits) visited Australia in August. Several Canberra DWDers attended her Sydney workshop held over the three days, which included individual working sessions on the Friday. It was an incredibly valuable three days and we are all working on the next level, including perfecting the Indi move (see video below at 2:40). 10 DANCES WITH DOGS REPORT CONT. The ANKC have established a working party to develop rules for Trick Dog Titles under DWD. A set of rules and proposed titles have been developed by the National DWD Committee with strong input provided by the ACT through its representative. BDOC will be holding a Mock Trick Dog Trial on 11 January A small Christmas Party was held at the final class on 16 December 2018 along with some goal setting in the areas of tricks to learn or perfect, routines to develop and competitions to enter bring on 2019! If you are interested in learning advanced tricks and really beefing up your training skills then DWD might be the place for you. BDOC Members are always welcome to come along to watch or try classes obligation free. Classes will kick off again on Sunday 27 January 2019 at 4.00pm. 11 CANINE COMPANION REPORT Written by Lyndal Hasselman 2018 was a fabulous year for Canine Companion. It was a sensational team effort by 49 volunteer instructors and assistant instructors, filling 135 places on the roster to provide training to 315 dogs and their handlers. Many of our handlers attain the level of obedience they desire for their hound after our Beginners or Bronze level classes. At this stage of their training, these dogs should be well on their way to becoming good canine citizens and family companions. In 2018, we had 232 dogs and their handlers obtain their Beginners level canine companion certificate, and 101 dogs and their handlers complete Bronze level. Congratulations to all these wonderful handlers and their clever pooches. In 2018 we also had 99 dogs and their handlers successfully pass Silver. These amazing dogs and their handlers are generally equipped with the foundational skills needed to take up one of the many dog sports. If your dog thrived on coming along to BDOC Canine Companion classes and you enjoyed the time spent learning new things with your dog then ask your dog whether any of these sports tickles it's fancy - dances with dogs, flyball, agility, disc dogs, rally-o, and obedience. As happens with a 100% volunteer team, we have also bid a fond see ya later to Gabrielle Meyer, who retired from regular instructing after six years in 2015, and continued to lead our loose lead walking workshops for several years after that. Fortunately for us, Gabrielle has continued to fill in and help out on occasion is off to a brilliant start with lots of fun and educational activities planned for our instructing team. We look forward to meeting with all the new dogs and handlers that will come to BDOC for training support this year, and know we will have lots of fun providing training to those continuing on from last year. Wishing you all the best for your dog training goals in 2019, Huge congratulations to the 25 handlers and their clever dogs who made it all the way through to pass Gold! These handlers and their dogs are superstars of the canine companion world, able to be polite, respectful and safely let their hair down in our society. Lady Handler of the Year Nina Svedin and Axel Gentleman Handler of the Year Matthew Kopec and Tammy Of special note for 2018, congratulations to Matthew Kopec with Tammy and Nina Svedin with Axel. Matthew and Tammy were recognised with the Gentleman Handler of the Year award for their persistence, diligently working with Tammy s reactivity to guide herto become a more comfortable and better behaved dog. Nina and Axel reminded the instructors of the joy a positive, playful training style can bring to a full-of-beans rescue dog, and this team was recognised as our Lady Handler of the Year. CANINE COMPANION SNAPS TAKEN ON SUNDAY MORNING IN SESSION also saw Canine Companion welcome to the instructing team 12 new volunteers. The calibre of these fresh instructors makes them hard to pick out from the older hands among us. Well done! Volume 12 / Issue 1 / January 2019 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 11
