1. Sacajawea Sacajawea was a Shoshone Indian princess. The Shoshone lived from the Rocky Mountains to the Plains. They lived primarily on buffalo meat. The Shoshone traveled for many days searching for buffalo. They hunted on horseback using the buffalo for food, clothing, homes, and tools. One day while Sacajawea and her brother were hunting, the Minnetaree Indians attacked their Shoshone village. They killed Sacajawea's father and captured Sacajawea. Sacajawea went from being a princess to being a slave. When Sacajawea became too old to be a Minnetaree slave she was sold to Charbonneau. Charbonneau was a trapper from Canada. He married Sacajawea and took her to the Mandan village. The Mandans lived much the same as the Minnetaree. One day some white men guided by Lewis and Clark arrived in the Mandan village to the loud beating of the tom-toms. Charbonneau said he would travel west with Lewis and Clark when the spring came. They needed a guide. In February Sacajawea and Charbanneau had a baby and named him Pomp. Captain Clark wanted Sacajawea to travel with the group because she spoke the Shoshone language and could ask the Shoshone Indians for horses to travel west. Sacajawea was the only one who could speak the Shoshone language. Sacajawea represented peace as she traveled with Lewis and Clark because war parties did not travel with women and children. While traveling a large gust on wind came up. The boat Sacajawea was traveling in filled with water. Sacajawea gathered up the supplies that were about to be lost in the river. Captain Clark was so grateful that he gave her a belt of blue beads. They had many other adventures on the journey. When Lewis and Clark came to a waterfall they built wagons to carry the boats across the land. While traveling over land up a steep, rocky hill the rain poured and filled up the canyon. Sacajawea slipped. Captain Clark helped her and Pomp climb out. The travelers also ran into rattlesnakes and grizzly bears. After coming to a three branch split in the river the group had to guess which brancg to take. Captain Lewis named the river they were traveling on for his friend Thomas Jefferson. Sacajawea knew she had reached her home when she found the rocks she had hidden behind during the Minnetaree raid. The explorers found old campfires and footprints, but no Indians. Sacajawea was sad when she walked through Indian village because she could not find her family. When Sacajawea reached the chief's teepee she found her brother. She told her brother how Clark had saved her life and that he was her friend. Then she asked for horses for their trip west. Sacajawea had to decide if she would go on with Lewis and Clark, or stay with the Shoshone. She decided to go. Lewis and Clark traveled by horseback over the Rocky Mountains. The group then traveled on the rivers for three months. After reaching the Pacific Ocean the men built a fort to live in during the winter. Sacajawea felt happy for helping Lewis and Clark find the Pacific Ocean and for also finding her people. In the spring Sacajawea returned to the Shoshone Indian village. When she returned Sacajawea could not find her brother. No one knows if she ever saw him again.

2. Buddy: First Seeing Eye Dog Morris Frank was a blind man from Nashville who helped start the first school that trained seeing eye dogs. His dog Buddy is considered to be the first seeing eye dog in America. Before there were guide dogs, people with any type of disability including a visual disability were simply marginalized. There were no provisions for them to be in public or hold jobs they were totally dependent on others for whatever they needed. Prior to having a guide dog, Morris Frank, who lost the use of one eye in a childhood accident and the other in a boxing match at the age of 16, hired a boy guide but the fellow got bored easily and occasionally left Frank alone to unexpectedly fend for himself. In 1927 The Saturday Evening Post ran an article by Dorothy Harrison Eustis, an American dog breeder living in Switzerland who was training German shepherds to work as police dogs. Though Eustis had been asked to write about her own program, she instead wrote about a guide dog program in Potsdam, Germany where the dogs were being trained to be the eyes for German World War I veterans who had lost their sight because of mustard gas. Frank s father read the article to him, and Frank, who was 19 at the time, wrote to the article s author begging her to train a dog to help him. Eustis took on the challenge. She invited Frank to come to Switzerland and since she was new at the process, began working with two dogs so they would have a choice of which dog was going to work out better. Both dogs were female, and the one that proved most suitable was named Kiss. Frank quickly renamed her as he felt a 20-year-old fellow should not own a dog named Kiss. Coming Home In 1928 Frank returned to the United States, disembarking from a ship in New York City. Buddy proved adept at guiding him through a throng of reporters and, on a dare from one of the newspapermen, Frank instructed Buddy to take him across West Street, which was filled with taxi cabs and trucks. Frank worried that he was expecting Buddy to handle more chaos than he had faced in training, but they made it. Later that day, Frank sent a one-word telegram to Eustis: Success. And that was the beginning of Frank s campaign to get Buddy accepted all over America with no more fuss than if she were a cane. In 1936, Morris Frank sat down with The New York Times for an interview about his work on behalf of the visually impaired. At that point, 250 dogs were helping owners in the U.S. and Frank had logged 50,000 miles by foot, train, subway, bus, and boat to meet with people and demonstrate the life-changing aspect of having a guide dog. By 1938, Frank knew that Buddy s health was failing, but they had one more task to accomplish: Together, the two of them needed to be permitted to fly on a commercial airplane. That spring, on May 16, 1938, Frank, with Buddy lying at his feet, flew from Chicago to Newark. The trip was made under a newly implemented ruling by United Air Lines that grants to all Seeing Eye dogs the privilege of riding with their masters in the cabins of any of their regularly scheduled planes. Buddy the Second Even Buddy II proved newsworthy, and an obituary appeared about his death on October 3, 1948.

For ten years Buddy II guided Frank, who was then vice president of the Seeing Eye School, to and from his office as well as on trips overseas. The obituary read: During the last war alone he guided his master on travels of over 49,000 miles, when Mr. Frank lectured at Army and Navy hospitals on Seeing Eye dogs for the blind. In describing how much Buddy brought to his job, Frank is quoted as saying that when Buddy was posing for television he would lick his paws in preparation for the appearance. And to the end, Buddy liked to conclude his work day with a roll on the floor and a romp with Mr. Frank. Buddy II was to be buried next to the grave of Buddy I on the grounds of The Seeing Eye School.

13. Trust Teaching Notes 1. Trust-Building Activities

1. Trust-building Activities Trust Building Activities help people to develop mutual respect, understanding of one another, communication skills and cooperation. Trust building exercises can be adapted for virtually any setting, but caution should be used to and activities should be adapted to the background and needs of specific groups and individuals. Trust building activities are commonly used in workshops, training seminars, social skill programs, physical education, team building, school groups, sport teams, youth work, and in therapeutic and correctional settings. Minefield Objects are scattered in an indoor or outdoor place. In pairs, one person verbally guides his/ her partner, a blindfolded person, through the minefield. Willow in the Wind In groups of ~8, a person in the middle closes his/her eyes, does a "trust lean" and is "passed around" the group. Requires good facilitation and fairly mature group. Trust Lean In pairs of similar size, one becomes a Faller and one the Catcher. Teach methods for spotting, falling and catching. Start small and build to bigger falls, then swap. Debrief - what made you feel more or less trusting? Running Free In pairs, one person is blindfolded. Holding hands, the blindfolded person is lead gradually from a slow walk up to fast running. Swap. Slice 'N Dice A dramatic trust activity for a large group. Group forms a gauntlet, arms out in front. As a person walks down the gauntlet, people raise their arms. Build up to people down running the gauntlet through a sea of chopping arms! Hug-A-Tree In a forested area, pairs take turns being blindfolded, lead to a tree (for touch and feel) and then lead away. After removing the blindfold, the tree hugger tries to locate his/her tree. Eye Contact Illustrate the importance of eye contact by having people in pairs stand facing each other and staring into each other's eyes for ~60 secs. Remove sunglasses. Eye Contact with Touch Illustrate the importance of both eye contact and physical touch by having people in pairs stand facing each other, holding hands, and staring into each other's eyes for ~60 secs.

Proximity Illustrate the importance of physical proximity by having people in pairs stand facing each a comfortable distance apart. Then ask people to move a little closer and feel what its like. Then ask people to increase the distance apart and notice how it changes one's feelings. Trust Fall Involves a person falling backwards from table height into the arms and hands of the group. Each group member can opt to take a turn as faller. Although commonly used, some believe it should be avoided due to the risk of physical and psychological injury. See photos. Rappelling / Abseiling Controlled vertical descent from height (~5m-100m), using ropes, harnesses and friction devices. Pamper Pole / Leap of Faith At moderate height (~10-30m), a person is on belay, standing on a small platform. The challenge is to jump for a rope or rope swing. Bungee Jumping From considerable height (~100m) a person leaps into space, relying on dynamic rope to lower the person to safety. Parachuting / Parapunting / Basejumping At major height (e.g., 300m+) a person leaps into space, using specially designed equipment and skill to land safely. Ways to Improve Social Support in a Group 10 ways to improve social support within groups, including group contract, supportive physical contact, group discussions, modeling and feedback, etc. Descriptions of Trust Building Activities (on other websites) Blind Crossing Blindfolded people walk towards and find a seeing partner, using the seeing partner's directions. Can progress to Blind Pinball, Mine Field & Blind Walk. [ Blind Walk A group is blindfolded and linked together - holding hand of someone next to them and shoulder of person in front. The group is then lead on a walk - anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours, depending on level of challenge desired. Trust Activities [more] Sherpa Walk, Mine Field, Trust Falls & Dives, Count Off 2, Running Free, Human Ladder, People Passing, Boundary Breaking, Height Lineup, Falling Now by Chris Clark
