4 WAYS TO EASE CANINE ARTHRITIS Excerpts from Dog Watch Submitted by Carol Shaltz Osteoarthritis is marked by physical wear and tear on a joint that develops gradually as a consequence of one or more wide-ranging factors, such as an inherited defect in the make up of a joint or traumatic injury or just old age. Common locations of osteoarthritis is usually observed in the elbows, hind legs, knees or stifles, shoulders and hips. It is characterized by the erosion of cartilage, the smooth tissue that protects the ends of bones from rubbing directly against one another. This grinding of the bones results in inflammation and pain of varying severity. Clinical signs are apparent stiffness and subtle reduction in activity, also limbs that are not being exercised normally may start losing muscle mass and become noticeably thinner, A dog with advanced osteoarthritis will always limp whether the disease is centered in the legs or the hips. The typical age of a dog when the disease becomes clinically obvious is between 5 and 8 years of age. A significant risk factor for this condition is obesity. The heavier the dog the more aggravated an unstable joint will become. Attentive owners can play a significant role in easing an arthritic dog s pain and improve its quality of life: Dog-Proof Your Home try to provide an environment in which the animal is as comfortable as possible during waking hours and while asleep. For example, cover slippery, hardwood floors with carpeting and throw-rugs in areas where the dogs spends most of its time during the day. 6 Provide a Special Bed make sure that the dog has a bed that is comfortably soft, yet firm enough to support its joints. Installing a ramp on stairs can enable a dog with advanced joint disease to climb with less pain. Institute a Daily Exercise Program Exercise your dog mildly and regularly. Do not make excessive demands on the animal and do not allow it to engage in roughhousing. Aquatic therapy can be beneficial. If the dog s joints appear to be unusually painful or if it has injured itself, you can apply an ice pack for 10 minutes or so to reduce inflammation. On the other hand, the animal is likely to benefit from the routine application of heat to the affected joints and from gentle massage. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ 1. Leave no books on lower bookshelves 2. Leave nothing laying around. Put it away or forget you ever owned it. 3. When you finish doing things on the computer put the mouse and its pad on the high shelf above the computer desk. 4. If it is missing, look in the dog beds and the yard. 5. Do not, do not, do not, leave threaded needles anywhere in the universe. 6. Put food away AS you clear the table. 7. Put your shoes in the closet and CLOSE THE DOOR 8. No coffee table books - Coffee table books feed a hunger for knowledge, not yours 9. Close drawers ALL the way closed 10.
