3 ANSTAMM VISITS ENGLAND PART II By Miriam Stamm Buildings at "Darmar." Left to right, house, adioin ing Puppy house, and grooming shed. In the fore ground is owner. Mary Darroch, and ''friends.'' Our tour of English kennels began at Alfreton, the home of Bardene. Malcolm Palethorpe and friend, Josephine Cresswell, met us at London Airport and whisked us off to Alfreton, which is 150 miles north of London in the beautiful Derbyshire hills. Bardene is characterized by its owners as a "small, select kennel," and it is just that. It is the home of the celebrated Ch. Bardene Bingo, w inner of 15 challenge certificates (CC's), BIS at Blackpool, and some of England's other top awards. Here also live Ch. B. Bartello; B. Be Mine, a Bingo daughter and winner of two CC's from the puppy classes; B. Bendigo, another Bingo offspring, who carries the fetching name of "Steptoe," and who is surely one to keep an eye on; and the other Bardene "regulars." Bardene is a family enterprise and is operated by Walter and Beth Palethorpe and their son and daughter, Malcolm and Heather. The kennel is a small, neat, compact building that will house 8-10 adult dogs comfortably, with a small area for grooming and breeding operations. The Bardene Scots are a happy lot and run together quite amicably. Twice a day they are taken down the allotment garden path and allowed to romp either in a nearby meadow or a woods that is a mile or so from the house. All Bardene Scotties become acquainted with rabbits, fox, badger, and hedgehogs early in life. The Palethorpes were exceptionally hospitable and such good hosts that we stayed in the Derbyshire area much longer than we had anticipated. It was well that we had our Ford "Classic" delivered to us here, for we found we needed several days to become accustomed to left hand controls and oriented to driving on the left side of the road. During this period, we made several side trips in company with Walter Palethorpe to the kennels of Major and Mrs. Frank Darroch (Darmar), the Misses Rachel Payne and Sybil H arrold (Bid~ field), Mrs. S. A. Collins (Ryeland), and the Robert Marshalls (Cowpastures). Darmar is a small kennel, too, and is located in Ingham, an out-of-the-way little village that the centuries seem to have bypassed. Our visit was necessarily a short one and confined to chatting. over tea with Major and Mrs. Darroch and visiting briefly with their very amiable six or seven wheaten and brindle Scots. With the exception of a small frame building used for grooming, all the buildings here were of native stone and had been built centuries ago. Stone walls connected them and helped to frame a large, grassy exercise area for the dogs. Bidfield is known to the English dog fancy mainly for its white poodles and wheaten Scotties. Of the latter, the most ANSTAMM KENNELS MR. & MRS. ANTHONY STAMM 2097 So. 4th St. Route No. I Kalamazoo, Mich. 4 .. celebrated was Ch. Bidfield Bix, whose name appears in many p edigrees of English wheatens. The 12 adult Scotties and the poodles are housed in several small, n eat brick buildings at the back of the Misses Payne and Harrold's charming home in Chesterfield. Here we were entertained at tea and introduced to several of the Bidfield Scots, among whom were B. Banana Boy and B. Banana Girl. They are a congenial, well cared-for bunch and enjoy occasional house privileges and daily exercise in a large and lovely garden setting. The Ryeland kennels are on the outskirts of Loudham and are owned by Mrs. S. A. Collins, who perhaps is better known for her Kerries than her Scots. The Ryeland k ennel building is a converted carriage house and stables and was one of the larger kennel facilities we visited. At the time we were there, Mrs. Collins had been without kennel help for some time; consequently, her Scotties were not in the best trim. Even so, their condition could not hide the short backs, good bone and substance, and quality that we had already come to expect in English Scotties. Unfortunately, however, they have little opportunity to become exposed to "the world" and acquainted with people a nd for this reason were not as outgoing in nature as the Scotties of other kennels we visited. Cowpastures is another small, neat, compact kennel and occupies the corner of the small, neat, compact backyard of the Robert Marshall residence at Sutton-in-Ashfield. It is so named because of its address - "Cowpastures Lane." SCOTTISH TERRIERS RANNOCH-DUNE CH. BARDENE BINGO with owner, Walter Palethorpe. England's top winning Scottie; holder of 1 S C.C. 's; BIS at Blackpool over 3288 entries; BB at STC of England. The Marshalls, although relatively new to the game, are in an enviable position to produce good, if not excellent, specimens of the breed, for they are continuing the work of Mrs. Marshall's father, the late G. Young, who bred Ch. Barden e Bingo and Eng. and Am. Ch. Barden e Black Jewel. Here we met Bingo's sire, B. Blue Starlight and his dam, B. Blue Cap, who is also Black J ewel's dam. By this time, we had become fairly well conditioned to driving from the "wrong" side of the car on the "wrong" side of the road and decided we were ready to start off on our own. 5 Niddbank, and Gillsie semed a logical excursion, for all are located in the same general area and within fairly easy driving distance of each other. Milward is tucked away in a quiet residential area on the outskirts of Sheffield. The "Lady of Milward" (and indefatigable secretary of the STCE), fearin g we would have difficulty finding her place, suggested a rendezvous at the Golden Sheaf, a friendly little pub near her, and here we became acquainted over "bitters" and "Babycham." She and her walking companion, Milward Meadowmist, accompanied us to Milward, where lunch awaited us. We spent several interesting hours talking about dogs, shows, and dog clubs in general, and discussing the special appeal of wheatens-an interest we have in common. The six Milward Scotties have permanent house privileges, are kept in excellent coat and condition, and have delightful temperaments. Three of them are wheatens, two are blacks, and one is a silver brindle. Perhaps the best known of the bunch is Milward Mixed Corn, known more familiarly as "Bill," the reddest wheaten I have ever seen, and a real salesman for the breed. Each dog has its own special place on the sofa with Mrs. Yates whenever she indulges in a n ap. One of the great disappointments of our trip was the fact that the pictures of Gladys and friends curled up on the sofa did not turn out. It would h ave been a sensation, I'm sure. The Niddbank kennels of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Ross overlook a beautiful valley on the outskirts of L eeds through which winds the road to Bradford. We arrived somewhat later than we had indicated, due to an unscheduled stop in Leeds caused by the front end of a city tram striking the rear end of our "Classic." Fortunately, no serious damage was sustained but considerable time was lost. It was too late to take movies and pictures, so we said we would come back the next morning for this. The Ross', however, insisted upon our having supper with them and we spent a very enjoyable evening talking dogs and going over ancient pedigrees. Mrs. Ross is continuing the genealogical studies of Scottish Terriers started by the late Dorothy Caspercz. The next morning we came back and took movies and still pictures of the Niddbank dogs and their surroun dings. The Niddbank dogs were good representatives of the breed, all were friendly, and all were maintained in excellent condition. We were particularly impressed with three 3%-month-old bitch puppies from a litter sired by Niddbank Domine ex Niddbank Dimple, the most appealing of which (to me) was an eye-catching silver brindle, to whom I had the honor of contributing the n ame, "Charm." The Gillsie kennels of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Gill are located on an extremely busy thoroughfare in Bradford and are probably the most compact of all the kennels we visited. Ever y square inch of outdoor space is utilized. The kennels are small, coop-ty pe buildings and back right up to the city sidewalk but are hidden from view by a high board fence. The remaining space is enclosed for an exercise area. It is not very large, however, so the dogs get most of their exercise through b eing walked on lead on the sidewalks of Bradford. We had tea with Mr. and Mrs. Gill and spent a very interesting afternoon talking abou t English exports and comparing notes on judging. (Continued next month) 12 OUR FIRST SCOTTISH TERRIER SPECIAL. ' JANUARY, 1964 is the month and surely every Scottie breeder and exhibitor will want to be a part of it. DETAILS ON BACK COVER NOVEMBER ISSUE DEADLINE: December 25th

6 .!:~ ~u... I.. mostly... SCOTTIES by Martha Melekov Belle Port Ave. Harbor City, California The question is often asked, "Do you make any money from the dogs?" This is always difficult to answer, and we usually generalize by stating that the dogs manage to take care of themselves financially. We are always careful to discourage those who want to become breeders primarily for profit, as a program of planned breeding, showing, scientific feeding, and veterinary care, can, we firmly believe, never be a money-making operation, especially where love is a factor, and the old, retired members of the force are given every comfort and consideration. "Why, then," we are asked, "stay in the dog business?" Why, indeed... Certainly there is no other endeavor so loaded with profits, even though all are intangibles. The selling of a puppy, or a service, is a most unique transaction. If handled honestly, it will repay with good friends, not just customers. This fact was verified on our recent trip through the Western States, when we visited Scots we had sent to what we evaluated as "good homes." We were delighted to discover that there never was cause for apprehension, and that, not only were our young hopefuls all in exemplary surroundings, but, we ourselves had some invaluable friendships. In the small communities of Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, Terrier owners are at a great disadvantage. Without many Charves ROBERT and MILDRED CHARVES 2607 N. Rancho Road El Sobrante, Calif. All the help must come from the printed word, and as not everyone is adept at transforming words into actions, it becomes a very discouraging effort in a lot of cases, and keeps many good specimens from ever being exhibited at the shows. Everywhere we went, we heard praise for "Terrier Type," and from some evident results, know that the grooming articles by Mrs. Gilkey were most helpful. Since these areas receive little enough recognition, and we were able to attend two shows in Utah, a report of these follows: At the Intermountain K.
