2 Bulldog Club of Greater Seattle General Meeting Minutes August 2017 Meeting called to order at 7:28 p.m. Members present: Trish & Len Whitney, Gail & Ed Harris, Sandy Fisher, Jay Serion, Brian Nolan. Joining via conferencing: Sherri Feeney. No guests present. No education. Approval of Agenda Minutes Approval: July meeting minutes approved. Officer reports- President: Gail Harris Ordered 50 Men's and Woman's t-shirts in various sizes and colors. Will fold them up and keep them in ziplock bags for storing. V-president: no report Secretary- no report Treasurer: Gave $50 to Jeff Ryman. Received $ back from Puyallup Cluster. Renewed insurance policy. Any volunteers are not covered. Need to look into officer liability coverage. Sandy handed out a profit and loss statement from 2010 to current. Bank balance-net incomespecialty show gain/losses. All 8 years. Discussion on having major fundraisers which we did in the years The quilt was a big one at the 2011 specialty show. We have 85 members with 59 memberships sold. Discussed slobberfest t-shirt costs. Gail thanked Sandy for putting this statement together. Old Business: Discussion on ways to raise funds for the club. We set a goal of bringing in $ $ in t-shirts. An online auction for fundraising for our show. Question was asked about how do we get new members? And keep our expenses down. Discussion and ideas, such as social media to promote shows instead of paying for ads. Breeders signing up new puppy buyers as members. A promo idea for new members of getting a t-shirt for 1/2 price Specialty show- Jay Serion show chairman: our three judges are Dr. John Little, Zach Lane, Dara Carr. Sweeps judges- we need to come up with some names. Look on the BCA website to see of people looking for assignments who would like to judge. We d like to come up with 5 names through this week. Haven't heard back from Puyallup Cluster on all breed judges for the back-up show yet. Looking into eliminating bulldogger advertising for the show. Looking for a theme for next years show. Motion and approved to use: Running of the Bulls as the theme. Reservation to be made at the Ram for the banquet. Randy Roberts will be our show photographer. 2

3 Slobberfest Sept Marymoor Park: Cathy Wilbert from Bullhaven NW will assist with Slobberfest. Sandy has ordered (and donated?) a 4x8 banner for education at our events. There will be gift bags for the first 50 attendees at Slobberfest. Animal Emergency will be there. There will be raffle baskets filled with various donations. Hopefully a microchip clinic, nail dremeling, American Ninja Bully contest with tire jump, weave poles, etc. A wet bathing suit contest-for bully s. Longest shortest tail contest, and various others, like years in the past. (Pool?) photographer will be there for candid shots. Bulldog Haven is doing the BBQ. Would like to put flyers up in local pet shops. Sandy and Gail will be putting flyers up advertising Slobberfest. The BCGS obedience trial will be on 12/09/2017 in Bow, Washington. Cheryl Knapp has secured our location. It has limited parking as well as a smaller indoor facility, so we are limited on entries. We will look into Argus Ranch and try to secure their facility for a large stand alone obedience trial in the future. Halloween Party: Sandy has created a flyer and event for the party to be held on Oct. 22nd at Paws-a-bilities in Fife, Washington. Discussion was continued on ideas of bringing in more members and revenue into the club. Such as 4-6 month puppy matches. Inviting BullHaven people/volunteers to join our club. Having health clinics and what kinds? Len brought up shirt tailing BullHaven events since they are so active. Doing World of Dogs. Inviting BullHaven to co-host our Halloween party. 6 DNA TESTING FOR CYSTINURIA & HUU Cheryl Knapp I was recently made very aware of the widespread and potentially life-threatening problem of Cystine stone formation in Bulldogs after returning home from the Rose City shows where my 3.5-year-old male had just earned his first major. The excitement of our success was soon overshadowed by the news that our boy was suffering from Cystine stones. He was rushed into surgery where the blockage was removed and neutering was performed to hopefully prevent any recurrences in the future. Pirate had received a BCA Platinum Ambassador for Health Award at the 2016 Nationals and was HUU clear by parentage, but we had not yet done the newly developed test for Cystinuria Type III. He was the picture of health with Coursing Ability and Rally Novice titles under his belt and was just coming into his own in the breed ring. 6

7 The BCA Health Committee has recently added two DNA tests to the Ambassador for Health program--the HUU (Hyperuricosuria) and the Cystinuria Type III. Both of these debilitating diseases have been found to be fairly prevalent in our breed but with a simple cheek swab DNA test that can be done on puppies as young as three weeks old, breeders can make informed choices in their breeding programs and take steps to eliminate these issues. Cystinuria is a genetic defect in which the kidney is not able to process a basic amino acid, cystine, correctly. Affected dogs are born with this condition but in most cases, it takes many years before things get bad enough to be noticeable. Over time, the unprocessed cystine in the urine clumps together to form stones which can block the urinary tract. This is a life-threatening condition and requires surgery. Type III Cystinuria, the type common in Bulldogs, is known to be triggered by testosterone so it seems to only affect intact male dogs. Bitches may not present with stones but can also have two markers of the gene and should be considered as "affected". The initial studies for Cystinuria were conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and their test has proven to be much more reliable than some of the others. The test is 7

8 called "Type 3 Cystinuria-Associated Marker". The cost is $75 per test but there is a discount litter rate when submitting 3 or more pups from the same litter, with a maximum cost per litter. You'll need to make a note in the "Comments/Clinical signs" box that the submission is for a litter mate when ordering the test - i.e Litter mate 1 of 6, litter mate 2 of 6, etc - and the cost will be adjusted before your card is charged. The PennGen test ordering interface is pretty clunky & takes a while to figure out the 1st time you use it. You'll need to set up a personal account, then add each dog & then order the test by clicking on "Create a Submission" in that dog's record. Also, PennGen does not include swabs or brushes in their test so these must be ordered separately at: or /Default.aspx The test is also offered through VetGen at the link below for $65 and these do include the two swabs needed for the test: Hyperuricosuria (HUU) basically means elevated levels of uric acid in the urine. This trait predisposes dogs to form stones in their bladders or sometimes kidneys. These stones often must be removed surgically and can be difficult to treat. GenSol Diagnostics offers the HUU test for $40 with a discount of just $30 if you order 5 or more tests. (You can always order several test kits and save them to use later) Below is a diagram showing the results from breeding dogs with Clear (no copies of the gene), Carrier (one copy of the gene) or Affected (two copies of the gene) This table wasdesigned with HUU in mind, but the same basic principles apply when dealing with Cystinuria. There are detailed instructions for collecting the swab/brush samples on your dog or puppy on the various websites as well as on the paperwork but the basic thing to remember is that the animal must be isolated from other dogs/littermates and not have food, toys, etc. that could contaminate the sample for at least 3 hours prior. Care must be taken when handling the swab/brush so that the only thing it touches is the inside of the animal's cheek being tested and the package it is held in. Swabs must air dry (do 8

9 NOT blow on them!) for 20 minutes before placing them back into the packaging for mailing to the lab. Once your samples are sent off the lab generally takes a couple weeks to process the samples and your results will be ed and/or mailed to you. With minimal effort, we could easily eliminate these two devastating diseases in our breeding animals in just a few generations. Kudos to those in our Division who have been paving the way to making this a reality! And for those working towards various BCA AFH Awards, the new requirements state that you can earn credit for these two DNA tests whether or not your dog/bitch is determined to be clear--as long as the test results are submitted to the OFA site. While we may not have perfect results on a particular animal, we can use what we learn to make wise decisions in our breeding program and improve the next generation of our beloved breed. After all, that's what health-testing is all about. Remember that the deadline for submitting your BCA Ambassador for Health Awards is earlier this year! With Nationals being held in early October, that means that AFH submissions must be received by no later than September 1st! Cheryl Knapp BCA Div V Health Committee Member 9

In the event BCA Division II Nationals does not sell a minimum of 3000 chances on or before Friday, October 6, 2017, we reserve the right to withdraw publicized prizes and the proceeds received by that date will be split 50/50 between BCA Division II and a single winner. The sale of chances and the drawing will both be monitored by Ann Ulberg, BCA National Show Treasurer. The Monitor and the Raffle Chairman and their families are not eligible to enter. ONLY ONE NAME MAY APPEAR ON THE ENTRY FORM. Entrants must be 18 years of age. In the event that two or more persons wish to pool their money and share one entry form, only one name, social security number will be awarded. The disbursement of the prize after the winner is announced is solely the responsibility of the winner. Corporations with a tax ID # may enter as one entity. Multiple entries cannot be noted on an individual registration, so if a person is interested in entering more than once, then they simply must detail the number of entries requested at $100 USD per entry. All chances will be sold on a first-come, first served basis. Opportunities to purchase chances will be offered only online.
