President's Message The Spring Earthdog Tests were terrific, with lots of legs and lots of titles earned. The Ocala site is very well suited for the tests, the weather was great (except for a little rain Friday evening and Sunday morning, and the crock pot competition was fierce. There were dips and stews and desserts and yes, even chili! What a great meal. Of course, Jim was there making his famous hot dogs too, so no one went away hungry. If we count the purchase of the laptop, printer and walkie talkies, the tests didn't make much money this time, but the equipment is an investment to make things easier in the future. The walkie talkies were so helpful when we were hunting for someone who needed to run, but was working somewhere else. The computer system will be great when it's complete and should make the Secretary's job much less time consuming. Thanks to all who helped out. It take a lot of hands to make it all work! We do need to make a decision on whether to hold another Earthdog Test in December or let the date go. If another club takes the date we may not be Continued on Page 6 HOSPITALITY March - Anthony & Linda Lopez PROGRAM - SOUTHEASTERN GUIDE DOGS From the Corresponding Secretary Ellen Axelrod From the Editor Meeting Notice The next general meeting will be held Monday March 21st at 7:30 pm, East Bay Animal Hospital, 3445-A East Bay Drive in Largo. 4 PRAYERS ANSWERED By Patricia Steele Summerfield - Brandie and Kai live a mere street away from each other but had never met until November 17. Call it luck, fate, chance or an answer to a prayer, but their meeting saved Brandie's life. Brandie is an almost-15-year-old Chihuahua. Kai, a Welsh terrier, also is 14 years old. Neither hears well and Brandie has cataracts. Their saga began when Brandie, an indoor dog, escaped outside and caused her owner Carole Loew a day of anxiety. Loew was frantic. She knew Brandie would be in danger because of her health and her age. Loew and her fiancé Bob Klemp created fliers to hand out as they scoured their Spruce Creek South neighborhood in their golf cart. They didn't find Brandie, but they did find many of their neighbors ready to drop everything to help search for Loew's "baby". "We started about 9:30 a.m. and spent the entire day looking for her, combing the entire community," Loew said. "And there must have been 30 or 40 people looking with us." There was no sign of Brandie. Finally, at 6:30 p.m., Loew went home and, as she said, "lost it". "I cried and cried and prayed like I've never prayed that somehow she would turn up," Loew said. Her prayers were answered when, at about 8:30 p.m., Loew received a phone call telling her that Brandie had been found. The dog had fallen down a storm drain and become trapped in the catch basin. Kai's story Neighbor Frank Krausser takes Kai for a walk most evenings, and this particular evening they were in the right place at the right time. "Kai gets to choose which way we walk for our short evening stroll. She picked a way she doesn't normally go," Krausser said. She walked to a storm drain on our street and stopped," Krausser said. "She wouldn't go forward and she wouldn't go back. She's very stubborn, and when she decides something, that's it. I wondered why she wouldn't move, so I got my flashlight and looked in the drain and saw two big eyes staring back at me." From a prone position, Krausser tried his best to reach Brandie, but the scared dog eluded his grasp. He found a neighbor who had a crowbar they used to lift off the manhole cover. "A wonderful man, whose name I didn't get, climbed in the sewer and brought Brandie out," Loew said. "I will be forever grateful to him." Loew and Klemp know they have wonderful neighbors, but the fact that so many came together to help them has left them in awe. "There were so many people we didn't even know that were concerned and wanted to help us," Loew said. "I am so glad I live in this community." Loew couldn't bear the thought of losing Brandie; the two have been together for more than four years. She adopted Brandie after the dog had been deemed too old to breed in a puppy mill. "She was set to be euthanized, but the people at the shelter couldn't do it. They sent her to a no-kill shelter, where I found her," Loew said. "I knew if I didn't take her, no one would. She was older, she had spent her life in a crate having puppies, and her ear was all messed up from an infection that was never taken care of. No one would want her." Loew admitted it was a little difficult at first to care for a dog that had lived in a crate her entire life and wasn't used to human companionship. But through patience and much love, Brandie and Loew became inseparable. "These dogs are Carole's babies; they're her life," Klemp said. "She was lost at the thought of what might have happened to Brandie." The night she was rescued Brandie didn't sleep and neither did Loew. "I cried for happiness and snuggled her and talked to her all night long," Loew said. "I know I will lose her eventually, but not this way - with her all alone and scared and me not knowing what happened to her. I'm just thrilled that Kai was stubborn. She's my hero." Reprinted with permission from Patricia Steele of The Villages Daily Sun. Editor's Note: Kai is a Welsh Terrier bred by Carole and Bob Beattie. She is 14 years old and belongs to Frank and Lois Krausser and lives in The Villages near Ocala. Her registered name is Ch. Sunspryte's Kai Cayenne. Brandie and Kai meet again with owners Carole Loew and Frank Krausser

I know there are some key people who won't be able to participate because of the closeness of the Eukanuba shows, so we need to hear from everyone else to be sure we have our bases covered if we go ahead with them. This is my final message to you as President and I have been trying to think of something useful to say. (Of course, as long as I am Editor of the Spotlite, I can always throw in my 2 cents worth!) What comes to mind is that this is a great club to belong to, with a group of the best people in the dog world. I hope we continue to have a good time with our terriers, while educating others about them and protecting them in all ways. Proposed Slate of Officers Pursuant to Article 4, Section 4 of the Bylaws, the nominating committee has proposed the following Slate of Officers: President Reatha Omodio Vice President Lorrie Geyer- Limitone Treasurer Jim Omodio Recording Secretary Tracey Wells Corresponding Secretary Ellen Axelrod Board of Directors Conni Adams Randy Limitone Lynne Whitney will complete the second year of her term and Linda Lopez has been appointed by the Board to complete Joe Whitney's term.
