1 ASSOCIATION OF PET DOG TRAINERS AUSTRALIA CONFERENCE 2012 Bankstown Sports Club, Sydney October 2012 featuring highly acclaimed keynote speakers Dr Sophia Yin Pat Miller G r i s h a St ewa rt

2 Keynote Presenters Dr Sophia Yin is a veterinarian, applied animal behaviorist, and the author of many books and textbooks, including Perfect Puppy in 7 Days; How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves; Low Stress Handling, Restraint and Behavior Modification of Dogs & Cats; and The Small Animal Veterinary Nerdbook. She earned her veterinary degree and a Master s in Animal Science from the University of California, Davis, and for five years taught the animal behavior courses in the UC Davis Animal Science Department. Dr Yin is also on the executive board for the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and was on the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Handling Guidelines Committee. Dr Yin is the inventor of the Treat&Train or MannersMinder Remote Controlled Reward-based Dog Training System, and was for five years the award-winning pet columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. She practiced at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists for many years, has consulted for several zoos, and has served as a behavior expert for TV shows such as Animal Planet s Dogs 101 and Weird, True & Freaky. Her mission in life is to improve our understanding of animals and their behavior so that we can care for, appreciate, and enjoy our time with them better. Pat Miller, author of The Power of Positive Dog Training (2001), Positive Perspectives (2003), Positive Perspectives 2 (2008), Play With Your Dog (2008), and Do Over Dogs (2010), has been training dogs for more than 30 years. She has trained a variety of breeds and mixed breeds (her own dogs) including Rough Collies, a Bloodhound, Australian Kelpie, Bull Terrier, Irish Setter, St. Bernard, Scottish Terrier, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Australian Shepherd, and a Springer Spaniel, and competed successfully with many of them in the obedience and Rally rings, most recently with her Pomeranian, Dusty, and mixed-breed Terrier, Josie. She also trained her Australian Kelpie to herd sheep and ducks (or more correctly, Keli taught Pat to herd). Keli was Miller s Canine Field Agent, riding with her on patrol during the years she was an Animal Services Officer in California. Miller worked for 20 years at the Marin Humane Society in Novato, California, during which time she collaborated with Trish King to create the country s first Color Coding system for shelter dogs and volunteers. Welcome from the President You are invited to the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia (APDT) upcoming Annual Conference to be held at the Bankstown Sports Club, Sydney October The Annual Conference is APDT s most important event of the year. We have three exceptional keynote speakers from the USA attending the conference this year, Dr Sophia Yin, Pat Miller and Grisha Stewart. These keynotes offer a wealth of experience to share with the delegates. We are expecting around 300 attendees made up of trainers, shelter workers, groomers, veterinary nurses and others who give advice on a daily basis to thousands of pet owners across the country and abroad. The Conference will again host a trade show which has proved to be a most important and popular part of our event, as well as a variety of networking opportunities and social functions. I look forward to seeing you there. Yours sincerely, Louise Ginman APDT President 2012 Grisha Stewart specializes in dog aggression in Seattle, Washington, USA. Her facility, Ahimsa Dog Training, has been voted Best of Western Washington. It has a store (online and in person), 2 puppy socializers for a day camp, and six dog trainers teaching a range of classes and private lessons, including a Growly Dog sequence, puppy kindergarten, manners, scent games, and agility. Ahimsa is a Buddhist doctrine of nonviolence to all living things, which reflects Grisha s focus on force-free methods to promote the well-being of dogs and their humans. Grisha has a Master s in Mathematics from Bryn Mawr College and is now pursuing a Master s in psychology with an emphasis in animal behavior and behavior analysis, while still running her business and providing private consults for aggression cases. Her first career as a theoretical mathematician serves her well in dog training and behavior consultations, because she relies heavily on the problem solving and critical thinking skills she gained in that field. She has always been an educator, but since founding Ahimsa Dog Training she has found her canine and human students to be much more excited about learning than her college students! 4 THE APDT PRELIMINARY CONFERENCE PROGRAM FRIDAY 26 OCTOBER DAY am 09.00am 09.00am am 10.30am am 11.00am 12.30pm 12.30pm pm 01.30pm 03.00pm 03.00pm pm 03.30pm 05.00pm 05.30pm 06.00pm-07.00pm Conference Opening - APDT President Louise Ginman Dr Sophia Yin - From Clever Hans to Current Day: Steps you can take to keep behavior a science Have you noticed the lack of critical thinking applied to everyday situations even among those of us working in science and medicine? One only needs to turn to their inbox to see examples of this. Friends read half-truths in a chain become agitated (the point) and forward it as if it is proven fact. Research is the antithesis of that. Dr. Yin explores the world of behavioral research, describing a study from inception of a hypothesis, to determining the methodology for testing and analyzing the results. Even if you don t see research in your future, understanding and using the critical thinking required for good research is a valuable tool that can be applied to everything you do. Morning Tea Dr Sophia Yin - Teaching dogs to learn to earn Every pet needs a human who can lead, but not like a dictator, rather more like a partner in a dance. In this presentation attendees will learn a style of leadership that fosters a sound understanding of how humans contribute to canine misbehavior, provides quick results, and can be performed by even those who are physically small or delicate. Attendees will see how Dr. Yin s version of the learn to earn program helps owners set clear rules of behavior, communicate the rules through correct body language and timing of rewards and punishers, and provides an environment of more certainty and less stress for the pet. Attendees will see how this program can allow someone to change a dog s behavior virtually overnight, and they will see the specific factors that make someone a good leader for their pet. Lunch Grisha Stewart - Introduction to BAT for dog reactivity Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) is a new dog-friendly combination of techniques to help dogs gain confidence, self-control, and social skills in a natural way. BAT uses real-life consequences (functional analysis) to reinforce sociallyacceptable behaviors. It was developed to be user-friendly for trainers and clients alike. Using video, images, and verbal explanations, you will learn the basics of this technique that is taking the world by storm. You will also get some background information on the science and techniques that are related to BAT. Afternoon Tea Pat Miller - Body talk Do you know what your dog is telling you? The dog training world has, in the last decade, come to understand the critical importance of recognizing the subtleties of canine body language. It s important not just to recognize but also respond appropriately to the communication signals our dogs are sending us, in order to best be able to train them and, when needed, help them to modify their behavior. In this session, Pat Miller will identify the various stress, deference, appeasement, displacement, affiliative, distance increasing and decreasing and other body language signals that dogs use. Using photos and videos she will isolate the various signals and help you learn to see what your dog is saying, and respond in a way that will maximize your effectiveness as a trainer and behavior consultant. APDT AGM (Grand Ballroom) Meet the Committee - Drinks at the Trade Show Bar SATURDAY 27 OCTOBER DAY am 09.00am Welcome - Louise Ginman (MC) 09.00am 10.30am 10.30am 11.00am 11.00am 12.30pm 12.30pm 01.30pm 01.30pm 02.00pm Pat Miller - How dogs think and learn Operant Conditioning. Classical conditioning. Positive reinforcement. Negative punishment. Respondent conditioning. Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence. Schedules of reinforcement. Cognition. Metacognition. It s enough to make your head spin. In this session, Pat Miller will present scientific principles of learning and behavior in commonsense language, in a way that will help clarify the confusion for you. Video clips will help you see how and why operant and classical conditioning are working together, all the time, and aid you in determine which approach might be more effective in any given training/behavior challenge. Morning Tea Grisha Stewart - Case studies: Aggression/fear/frustration rehab with BAT This talk includes a brief introduction to Behavior Adjustment Training followed by video examples of case studies to help clarify how this popular technique is used (correctly and incorrectly) in real life. Videos will cover the use of BAT with territorial aggression, fear-based aggression, object fears, and frustrated greeters and explore how BAT is based on the needs of an individual dog. Different types of set-ups will be shown to help explore the broad applicability of BAT. Lunch APDT Awards Presentation (20 minutes) ACAC Report

5 02.00pm 03.00pm 03.00pm 03.30pm Grisha Stewart - Puppy socialization with BAT Learn about developmental stages in puppies and what that means in terms of puppy kindergarten and other programs. Get recommendations on which skills to teach, which popular techniques to get rid of in your puppy classes, pitfalls to avoid, and how to use Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) in an everyday way with normal puppies and for rehab with puppies with issues. Puppy problems are as easy to create as they are to fix, so learn how to help set puppies up for success. Afternoon Tea 03.30pm 05.00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS A: Pat Miller - Bite me Dogs who bite people tend to have short lives. In this session on canine aggression, Pat Miller will help you understand what motives dogs to bite, and how to modify aggressive behavior so dogs can safely stay in their lifelong loving homes. Some teasers: 1.) Aggression is caused by stress reduce the stress and you reduce the aggression 2.) Management doesn t *always?* fail, and is a vital part of any aggression modification program. 3.) Follow an analysis of one of Pat Miller s actual cases, including video: an American Bulldog who resource guards with a toddler in the home. B: Sophia Yin - Low stress handling Think you don t have time to teach an old dog (or cat) new tricks? Think again! You influence an animal s behavior every time you interact with him, so you might as well make it a positive experience for both of you. In this presentation, Dr. Yin shows how to modify each interaction from the initial greeting to restraint for blood draws to have maximum positive impact on the pet. You ll learn how to do this quickly and safely, too. Examples include toweling techniques for dogs and cats, non-scruff holds for venipuncture, and using food motivators without further arousing an already hyperactive animal. This session focuses on how to quickly and easily modify handling and restraint techniques, based on the behavioral response of the dog and includes narrated video clips so you can see it being done. Ensure your patients love their visits to your hospital! C: Grisha Stewart - Method comparison - A critical look at 7 different methods for fear-based aggression Many dogs do not come to us as clean slates. They have already gone through a variety of other training techniques from the owners and potentially other trainers. It is helpful to know exactly what the other techniques are so that we can help our clients decide what is best for their dogs. This talk compares 7 different common methods for rehabilitating fearbased aggression from a humane training perspective, including force-free techniques and punishment methods from popular books and videos. When possible, video clips will be included to help visualize the differences pm pm 07.30pm - late Pre Dinner Drinks Conference Dinner - Hawaiian Night SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER DAY am 09.00am Welcome Louise Ginman (MC) 09.00am 10.30am 10.30am 11.00am Sophia Yin - From perfect pup to devil dog Everyone providing any kind of service in the pet industry, be they trainers, shelter workers or members of veterinary teams, should be aware of the importance of providing early socialization and training to puppies. And well-mannered puppies/dogs are at less risk of being relinquished. With that said, what happens when a puppy attends a puppy class so poorly run it s actually counterproductive? All is not lost. Dr Yin will discuss how to repair the damage done and what she learned about the amount of training needed to establish good habits even when not reinforced by owners. In this presentation, Dr. Yin documents the rapid deterioration in behavior and personality of her parents new puppy due to some improper training early on. Then she sows the more advanced exercises needed to quickly reverse the bad habits. Morning Tea 11.00am 12.30pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS A: Sophia Yin - Understanding and mending the rift between household pets (Feuding Fidos) What do you do when household dogs don t get along? Should you let them duke it out or try to manage it? This presentation shows why and how poor relations between family Fidos develop and what owners can easily do to prevent the problems. Attendees will see cases of such canine conflicts and the techniques for mending the rift. They ll also learn why choosing one dog to be higher ranked and then backing up his status can backfire over the long run, and why punishing the dogs can make the situation worse. Treatment will focus on changing the underlying emotional conflict that drives the aggression. B: Pat Miller - Dog play It s mystifying but true: some people don t know how to play with their dogs. It s also true that dogs and their humans who play together are more likely to stay together. The most common reason for dog-owner play-disconnect is the human s lack of understanding that different dogs have different play-styles: If you want to throw a ball for your dog to fetch, but his idea of play is tugging on a rope toy, the two of you don t get far. Also, dogs who don t have the opportunity as puppies to play with humans may not even understand that humans are for playing with. You *can* rehabilitate a play-deprived dog! In this session Pat Miller discusses various canine play-styles, as well as providing information on how to better play with your dog, and how to use play as a reinforcer in your training program.

6 C: Grisha Stewart - Foundation skills for dogs with issues Dogs with aggression, frustration, or fear issues need help with focus and decision making. Learn how and why to teach and troubleshoot what Grisha considers to be the top 10 most important dog skills for (over)reactive dogs, besides for actually choosing not to be reactive! These skills are Respond to Name, Target, U-turn, Emergency Recall, Leave It, Leash Tightness Means Turn Away (versus fighting), Relax, Wear a Muzzle, Disappear (to crate or bed), and Car Wash (stand between human legs facing the same direction as the person) pm 01.30pm Lunch 01.30pm 03.00pm CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS CONCURRENT SESSIONS A: Sophia Yin - Fear aggression Behaviour modification for dogs fearful of dogs While most people assume that dominance is the primary cause of dog aggression towards unknown dogs, the most common cause is fear. In fact, fear or defensive aggression towards other dogs is one of the most common reasons clients take their dog to veterinary behavior specialists. We used to assume most dogs who lunge and go ballistic when they see other dogs on the street were trying to exert high rank but now it s clear they are fearful or incompletely socialized. This presentation will show how aggression to unfamiliar dogs develops and how owners unwittingly make it worse. Dr. Yin will show video of dog body language that exhibits fear or anxiety even though they are acting aggressively. Attendees will see techniques for addressing both the outward behavior and the underlying emotional state driving the behavior. They will also learn to recognize when a patient that looks cured may actually be worse. B: Pat Miller - Positive solutions for behaviour problems Pat Miller is widely known as a leader in the positive reinforcement training world. Her classes, behavior consultations, academies, articles and books offer an unwaveringly positive approach to the world of dog training and behaviour. This session will offer an overview of positive solutions to a wide range of canine behavior challenges. Some of the behaviors covered include barking, digging, taking household objects, and more. Miller will use one or more of her actual cases to help illustrate her points, and will discuss the processes and protocols she uses with her human clients and their dogs. C: Grisha Stewart - Troubled teens and growly dog classes Growly Dog classes can rehabilitate aggressive and fearful dogs in a less expensive way than private lessons and even help provide more chances to do set-ups. Troubled Teens classes are similar to Growly Dog but are meant for the young dogs who have either missed out on puppy socialization or have been socialized in ways that cause more issues. Get detailed information with videos on how to teach classes for reactive dogs using BAT, including adolescent and adult dogs. These classes are almost recession-proof and can help bring in money and save dogs no matter how the economy is doing pm 03.30pm 03.30pm 05.00pm 05.00pm Afternoon Tea Grisha Stewart - Quick Fixes - Creative management for problem behaviors Training and behavior modification create the most permanent change in a dog, but sometimes clients need to fix the problem right away? How do you provide quick fixes that are still ethical and fair to the dog? Get practical tips on ways that clients can change their environment to stop or prevent behaviors (from jumping up to barking to aggression) to give training time to take root.
