There are picnic tables and a barbeque grill. We have so much food left over from the picnic, we thought this would be a good way to use it up hamburgers and brats. If you are coming, let Carol know so we can talk you into bringing a side dish. It s fine to bring dogs too. If the weather is bad, the meeting will be at Carol s house. Hope this is okay with everyone. It s such a beautiful Indian summer time of year good to be outside. Revised TBHC Constitution and By-Laws These were voted on and accepted by the members at the last meeting. The new Constitution and By-laws have been filed with the AKC and are official BHCA Regionals and Specialty Our Regionals will be judged by Mimi Tysseling. Our 50 th anniversary specialty will be judged by Carla LaFave. Christina Cox will do sweepstakes. We were able to get one of Terry All s obedience judges to come in a day early so Cathy Durka will judge our obedience and rally. Applications are in to the AKC. Hoping to have the same committees as last year: Karla Kollasch - Hospitality Christina Cox - Trophies Cindy Underhill - Raffle Maggie Witherbee - Rescue parade Need a Chief Ring Steward JR is planning a nice mid-day luncheon, fancier than usual, to be held between the end of Regionals and beginning of specialty. The rescue parade can be earlier this year, probably around 11 since obedience and rally will be scheduled for the afternoon. We do need your help so please contact one of the board members if you re able to take on a job even a small one would really help.

2 The Pack Demo at Nationals BHCA members attending Nationals were treated to demonstrations by 2 registered Basset packs. This took place on Tuesday following sweepstakes on a large expanse of lawn behind the Events Center. Spectators stayed at the top of the hill and watched the packmasters and whippers in put the hounds through their paces, sending them out with horns and bringing them back with a different horn sequence.... fascinating. The pack managers arrived early and came inside to see parts of the show. They brought one of their Bassets name was Maggi very warm, friendly people, obviously devoted to their Bassets and wanting to get better acquainted. Three Rivers and Okaw Valley handlers with Maggi. Guillermo Gonzalez is 2 nd from the right, and owns a working Basset Hound pack in Spain. Third from the left is the founder of the famous Strathalbyn Basset Hound pack and received a huge round of applause when introduced. Three Rivers pack master Lei, in traditional pack garb, acting as spokesperson to the spectators explaining what the packs were doing on the grounds below. She explained that the whip is merely a fixture, not used to whip the dogs.

3 Some of these Bassets are rescued; others are descended from the Ashland Basset Hound pack of Virginia. We were told that they take them out on hunts once a week or so, and the older ones remain with the pack as long as they are willing and able. When the dogs are no longer able, they occasionally have a grandma/grandpa hunt for the older ones. They left us with applications to join BHCA and a promise to stay in touch. Brags: Betty: Susan: Pippa (Halcyon Marvel) was BOS at Cheyenne both days. Thumper took a long car trip to Atlanta and Orlando and traveled well. 4 The 2014 TBHC Agiliy Trial Our All Breed Agility Trial September 22 was once again successful. Although the entry was smaller than usual due to a conflicting agility trial in another venue in the same park district, those who came enjoyed the trial. The good thing was, we were able to go home earlier than usual. The wind did start blowing in the afternoon as usual creating a paperwork challenge there must be a better way! Gail once again handled the CGC Testing. Several club members were there to break down the ring. A special thanks to Susan for transporting the fencing back to Ewe R Here Farm after the trial. Degner, Board-certified Veterinary Surgeon (DACVS) Key Points Lameness usually lasts 2 to 3 weeks, but not longer than 5 weeks; therefore if your pet s lameness has been going on for longer than 5 weeks, your pet likely has another condition The lameness may shift from one limb to another This disease is treated with pain medications This disease usually does not recur after 12 to 18 months of age Clinical Presentation Affects the shaft of long bones o Top of the ulna (front limb) o Lower part of humerus bone (front limb) o Central radius bone (front limb) o Central femur bone (thigh bone) o Upper end of tibia bone (hind limb) Lameness is frequently of sudden onset o May be mild to severe o Lameness usually lasts 2 to 3 weeks, but not longer than 5 weeks; therefore if your pet s lameness has been going on from a solid period of time that is greater than 5 weeks, your pet likely has another condition o The lameness may have a recurrent pattern o The lameness may shift from one limb to another The affected bone is painful to touch Some dogs can show signs of o Fever o Tonsillitis o Elevated white blood cell count Signs on Radiographs (x-rays) If the disease is early in its course no abnormalities may not be seen on the radiographs; if the radiographs are repeated in 2 weeks the problem usually can be seen Increased density in the marrow cavity of the affected bone can be seen The wall of the bone becomes thicker due to new bone formation on the inner and outer layer of the bone Two to three months later the bone normalizes and the bone looks normal on radiographs again In the radiograph below take note of the lighter spots in the marrow cavity (denoted by the arrows) which is eopan Microscopic Signs There usually is no inflammatory component of panosteitis The main change seen is fibrosis of the marrow (scar tissue develops) With time the fibrous tissue changes into bone, hence the increased density as seen on the radiographs

6 New bone formation on the inner and outer part of the bone can be seen Cause Unknown Potentially an unidentified viral infection Treatment Self-limiting disease that has a spontaneous recovery Repeated bouts of this disease are about one month apart Problem usually does not recur after 12 to 18 months of age Treatment is supportive Anti-inflammatory medications If the pet is systemically ill, then intravenous fluid therapy may be needed for rehydration Great New Cleaning Product Most of us with dogs have tried numerous cleaning and odor removing products over the years I certainly have so I wanted to share this information.
