1 Humane Happenings H u m a n e S o c i e t y o f C i t r u s C o u n t y F L O R I D A I N C. Volume 4, Issue 3 My Dogs Live Here My dogs live here, they're here to stay. You don't like pets, be on your way. They share my home, my food, my space. This is their home, this is their place. May/June 2010 Our Mission: THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF CITRUS COUNTY FL INC IS A 501(C)3 CORPORATION DEDICATED TO THE PROTECTION OF ALL ANIMALS. IT IS OUR GOAL TO RESCUE AND FIND FOREVER HOMES FOR AS MANY ABANDONED, ABUSED PETS AS POSSIBLE AND TO TRY TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC TO THE IMPORTANCE OF SPAY/NEUTER TO ALLEVIATE THE PROBLEM OF THE OVER-POPULATION OF UNWANTED, ABUSED, ABANDONED PETS.. You will find dog hair on the floor, they will alert you're at the door. They may request a little pat, a simple 'no' will settle that. It gripes me when I hear you say 'Just how is it you live this way? They smell, they shed, they're in the way..' WHO ASKED YOU? is all I can say.. They love me more than anyone, my voice is like the rising sun, they merely have to hear me say 'C'mon, it s time to go and play'. Then tails wag and faces grin, they bounce and hop and make a din. They never say 'no time for you', they're always there, to GO and DO. And if I'm sad, they're by my side and if I'm mad, they circle wide and if I laugh, they laugh with me, they understand, they always see. So once again, I say to you, come visit me, but know this too.. My dogs live here, they're here to stay. You don't like pets, be on your way. They share my home, my food, my space, this is their home, this is their place.. Author Unknown INSIDE THIS ISSUE: TOP 10 DOG POISONS 2 LYME DISEASE 2 EASY WAY TO HELP 2 HAPPY TAILS 3 FACT OR MYTH 4 THANKS APRIL/MAY 4 FRIENDS BY JOSEPH L. BARCELO LOOKING FOR FOR- EVER HOMES RESCUE STAMPS 6 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY YOUR DONATIONS HELP RESCUE MORE THAN DOGS/CATS This little gal on the left is Baby, a day old Alpaca, who was stuffed into a grain sack and thrown in a dump by a large, local Alpaca farm, where she stayed for at least 24 hours before she was rescued by a concerned citizen and turned over to us. The owner thought she was dead. Unfortunately because of dehydration and lack of colostrum, the little girl didn t make it and she died in Lisa s dining room. Gizmo who never left her side, knew she needed her closeness and comfort.
2 TOP 10 DOG POISONS AROUND THE HOME Humane Happenings LYME DISEASE IN DOGS 1. Prescription drugs. 2. Flea and tick products. 3. People food: Chocolate, alcohol, grapes, raisins, Xylitol. 4. Rat/mouse poison. 5. Pet medications. 6. Household plants: azaleas, rhododendrons, tulips, daffodils, Sago Palms. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that can affect humans, dogs, cats and other mammals. Its primary carrier is the deer tick. The tick can attach to a dog or human and transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. Signs include depression, swelling of the lymph nodes, loss of appetite and fever, as well as lameness and swollen, painful joints and can lead to renal failure. Ticks are most active from spring through fall and live in tall brush or grass, where they may attach to your pets as they pass through the area. These parasites prefer to stay close to the head, neck, feet and ears but they can be found anywhere on your pet s body. Ticks are visible to the naked eye so it s a good idea to check your pet regularly. If you do spot a tick, it s important to use care when removing it. Any contact with the tick s blood can potentially transmit infection to your pet or even to you. Treat the area with rubbing alcohol and remove the tick with tweezers, making sure you ve gotten the biting head and other body parts. 7. Chemical hazards: pool chemicals, antifreeze. 8. Household cleaners. 9. Heavy metals like zinc and lead. 10.Fertilizer, products for your lawn or garden. Page 2 WAYS YOU CAN HELP! 4 FACT: Dogs can smell diabetes. Dogs can sniff out a dangerous drop in blood sugar in a diabetic owner and alert the person to take action. FACT: White cats are often deaf. Cats with a white coat are often deaf in one or both ears, especially those with blue eyes. When only one eye is blue, the cat is likely to be deaf on that side only. FACT: Cats smell with their mouths. Cats have a small scent gland in the roof of the mouth called the vomeronasal organ. For a really good whiff, they ll open their mouths wide to draw the odor to this scent organ. MYTH: Warm nose, sick dog. The temperature of a dog s nose changes easily and is not a good sign of illness. It can be hot and dry after lying in the sun or cool and wet from dipping in the water bowl. 5 Volume 4, Issue 3 FRIENDS by Joseph L. Barcelo Over the years, we've had several pets in our home. I hate to call them that because they were really members of our family. They ate, played and even slept with us in some cases. They had their own beds and free run of the house, as befits any member of the family. Of course, as we all do, some eventually passed on, hopefully to a better place, and we miss them. As I get older, I contemplate that finality for myself, and hope that I will be admitted to that same happy place. I know that a small group of my old furry friends surround me as I make my way and when it s time for me to make my final accounting, I shall stand mute.
