Volume 4, Issue 6 THE BABIES ARE IN As we told you in our last Humane Happenings, the babies have arrived from Orlando. Twenty-four very tired and bedraggled pups arrived on a very cold late afternoon and immediately started to make themselves at home. All of them are adults and most are senior citizens. Poor Holly has such bad hips, she can barely walk when the weather is cold. She lays on her throne and has become our greeter. Dustin won t eat while anyone is watching. After everyone else has gone out for the morning, Dustin will eat alone before catching up in the yard to play with his pals. Baby likes to guard things like her food bowl and the dog house. She doesn t want to go in the dog house, just doesn t want anyone else to either. Emma has bad skin and will be a challenge until we can get her skin clear. Penny is very excitable, spring loaded and always on go, while Freckles is very skittish, quick movements startle her. But she and Penny have a great time playing. Then there s Alice who is kenneled alone because she is a little aggressive to the other dogs. Hopefully when she feels more secure, she won t feel the need to protect her turf. All the babies seem to be having a contest to see who can dig the best hole. Each tries to outdo the other with their digging skills. They m ust b e judging the holes on depth rather than form. 2 PREVENTABLE CONDITIONS 1. Intervertebral disc disease common to Humane Happenings MORE ARRIVAL PICTURES Dachshund, a genetic disease. Use steps or ramps to prevent jumping. 2. Gastric tortion (bloat) in large dogs. Feed 2 or 3 small meals rather than one large meal. Feed mixture of canned and dry. 3. Foreign body in the small intestine. Supervise so your dog doesn t find something inappropriate to chew. Provide appropriate chew toys. 4. Cruciate rupture, a rupture of a knee ligament. Difficult to prevent but try to supervise rough play and don t over exercise. 5. Foreign body in stomach. Same as number Broken bones. Take care especially with small dogs not to drop or step on them. Keep large dogs on a leash to keep them safely out of traffic. Page 2 WAYS YOU CAN HELP! In observance of Answer Your Cat s Questions Day, take a moment to gaze into your cat s eyes, chitter-chatter with him or her, observe its cute body language and ask yourself Just what is this cat saying to me? I ll bet you ll find the answer Some questions from Tyra, Tucker, Mishou, Lexie and MeToo: 1. Why don t we have Stinky Goodness all day long? We think it should be available 24/7. 2. Why do you sleep with your head on your pillow? You know that s where I like to sleep. 3. Can we sell the Woofies on E-Bay? 4. Napping is a major sport for us. Why don t you nap more? 5. Why do you try to close the bathroom door? Don t you understand that we worry that you could be in danger in there and we might have to save you? 6. We like to whap things. Why don t you leave more things on the counter for us to whap? 7. Why do you sleep at night? It s the perfect time to play. 9. Why do you give me interesting things to lie down on, like books and newspapers, and then take them away? 10. Why do you steal things out of my litter box? 11.Why does the Woofie steal things out of my litter box? 12.Why can t you leave the faucet running so I can drink fresh water? 13.How many times can I get you to open the door to let me in or out? 14.How long will you wait with the door open (especially if it s cold) while I check both sides of the door for smells of intruders? 15.How come when I nap on your lap, you make me get off after only a few short hours? 8. 7 Volume 4, Issue 6 NEWEST RESCUE Nippy, a 30 year old paint gelding, was turned over to the Humane Society because his broken-hearted owners were losing their home. They tried unsuccessfully to find him a new home but no one wants a 30 year old special needs horse with only 3 teeth. Nippy can only eat special food and alfalfa cubes when they are soaked in water to soften. Carnahan s Supply in Lecanto has been kind enough to donate some feed and they are aware of what Nippy needs if you would like to make a donation of feed.
