2 Frontier District 2018 Klondike Derby Date: Place: Time: Saturday, January 20, 2018 This is an all-weather event. No alternate date is scheduled. Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation Registration opens at 8:00am. Sled inspection is after registration. The Klondike Derby will start promptly at 9:00am and run until 4:00pm. Re-enactments start at 7 PM and go till done. Patrols: Attire: Patrols must consist of at least 4 Scouts and not more than 8 Scouts including Webelos Scouts. A point will be awarded to each patrol for the mix of rank within the patrol (i.e. Webelos, Tenderfoot, 2 nd or 1 st class, or Star scouts within the patrol group). Each patrol will have a designated Patrol Leader. One Scout is the driver of the sled and is required to be on the sled at all times when it is moving. The Patrol is encouraged to rotate whom is driver between stations. All Scouts will be inspected to be dressed in appropriate winter clothing including water proof shoes/boots, gloves, and hat. Hoodies and hoods of coat do not meet the winter hat requirement. Day packs must include a spare pair of socks. Adult leaders should be observant of inappropriately dressed Scouts and take action to rectify prior to arrival. Re-enactors should dress in garb of the time. Bring your best impression. Inspection: Sleds: Patrol Leaders report with sled to the inspection station completely prepared and ready to begin the event immediately after registration. There will be three (3) sled inspections stations. Your patrol will be given a random number of 1 to 3 to determine your inspection station to go through. The inspectors may change your inspection number at their discretion. The Derby will start promptly at 9:00am. All sleds are to muster at Willits Hall (Dining Hall parking lot) after sled inspection 10 minutes prior to start time. Sleds may be of your own design or you can use the sample plan in this guide. Sleds must meet the following requirements: Length = Between 5 and 6.5 feet. Width = Between 18 and 24 inches. Ground Clearance = Minimum of 4 inches. No wheels allowed on the sled. Sled frames must be made of wood. Metal hardware is allowed. Sleds must be capable of transporting one scout and 50 pounds of gear. Sleds must have a tow rope attached to each side of the sled extending 12 feet in front of the sled. Sleds must have a brake rope attached to the rear of the sled. If commercial skis are used as runners, they must be backed with wood. Sleds must have wire, cloth or equivalent on the sides to prevent loss of equipment. Sleds may have side rails for lifting the sled over ditches and logs more easily. Equipment: Each patrol and sled must contain the following equipment: Sled repair kit Watch or device with time shown Folding pocket knife First aid kit Compass Paper, pencil, and clipboard 1 gallon of potable water (Nalgenes per scout) Patrol food, cooking gear, and 1 frying pan Kindling to start a cooking fire 3 poles at least 5 feet long Patrol flag Full size blanket, tarp, or sleeping bag

3 Rope Boy Scout Handbook and/or Field Book Any other equipment you feel is needed. You must declare your lunch at check-in to the inspector. Food/Lunch: Lunch is to be made by a camp stove or wood fire at a station nearest the patrol at high noon (12:00PM) and eaten on the trail. Each individual Patrol MUST bring their own food. Patrols MUST bring the lunch with them on their sleds, prepare and cook the food, then eat at the station they are located at lunch time. The patrol shall offer a small portion to the local station judges/scouts/leaders for their sampling. Patrols will earn points for quality, portion per scout, taste, and overall time taken to cook and feed the patrol as witnessed and inspected by station personnel. Note: There is no time for a break at lunch time. There may be a snack bar before, during, or after the closing ceremonies and award presentations. To be successful your group needs to get through all ten stations and the before and after inspections before turning all paperwork in. Once your group is finished the time remaining before closing is yours to go to the trading post or sites. Questions can be directed to Carl Dunn, or carl.dunn@worleyparsons.com, OR Tom Wolfinger at or wolfingerthomas@yahoo.com. Please contact Carl first.

After inspection, each sled will be judged on the following criteria: overall design, creativity and uniqueness, Scout Sprit, and appearance. FIRST AID In the event of someone getting hurt, you should contact the nearest Station adult as they will have radios to call for help. There will be medical personnel on site. AWARDS In addition to a participation patch, awards will be given to the top five patrols on a point basis, Klondike Chef Awards, and Klondike Patrol Spirit Awards. Upon completion of the last station, Patrols will return to Willits Dining Hall for placement announcement and Closing Ceremony. Awards will be distributed at the February roundtable. KLONDIKE DERBY RULES AND POINT SYSTEM Each Patrol will be awarded a point for Webelos scout participation. Patrol may have up to a maximum of two (2) Webelos per Patrol. These points will be awarded at each Station. Each Patrol will need to have a Klondike Derby sled. These sleds can be the traditional or the non-traditional design, but must conform to the requirements. At each one of the ten stations a patrol could earn ten points plus one point for leadership or teamwork, one point for a patrol cheer, one or two points for one or two Webelos as team members, and one point for a patrol flag. A group could earn fifteen points per station. Additional points will be given for troops/patrols that supply youth members to help run stations and troops that run or operate a station will be able to earn more points for their patrols. Points for Youth Leaders: Youth Leaders must be Star, Life or Eagle Scouts helping to run a Station all day long. 2 points will be awarded for each Youth Leader up to 5 members for 10- point maximum. Those points earned will be awarded to every patrol their troop enters in this event. Points for Troops Creating, Running, and Operating a Stations: A Troop running a Station all day, youth leaders and Troop Adult Leaders together responsible for the station, will earn 10 points for each of their patrols entering the Klondike event. An objective Station Leader not associated with the Troop must score the Patrols associated with the Troop s Patrols that compete at that station. (Fairness!) Each patrol could be awarded twenty additional points added to their total score at events, if their troop and leaders are able to create, operate, and man a station; and they have five troop leaders helping all day at stations.

5 Twenty points is a high reward and may help to determine which patrol wins this event. Everyone has an opportunity to be a part of this event. Help all the boys have a great day learning and having fun. EQUIPMENT LIST Each patrol will carry the exact minimum equipment list as noted previously. Additional supplies may be carried if needed for station challenges, but non-essential items (e.g., air mattress) will result in a deduction of 5 points for each non-essential item from the total score received at completion of the Klondike. ADULT LEADERS Scout Patrol leaders are ultimately responsible for the function of the patrol; However, each Patrol should have at least one adult leader following the patrol throughout the Klondike for safety and supervision. Adult leaders ensure the Patrol gets to the Stations safely, encourages the patrol members travelling between stations, and looks out for the overall welfare of the patrol during the day. Adult leaders shall insure all members of the patrol have eaten and had sufficient liquids at lunch. Patrols are encouraged to stop for short breaks of snacks and fluids during the morning and afternoon. Adult leaders are not permitted to assist either physically or verbally at any station. If an adult leader does assist in any form, the Patrol will receive a score of zero for the Station! Adult leaders will be reminded of this rule at each station. STATIONS There will be 10 round-robin Stations. Each Patrol will be given their first Station to complete and can proceed to the next Station when ready. Sufficient time is available to complete all 10 Stations and obtain best possible score. How to complete each station will be described by the Station Lead when the Patrol arrives. Each station will have a total point value of 15 points, and will be judged in the following manner: Patrol Flag - 1 point Patrol Yell - 1 point Webelos Scouts - 1 point Patrol Leadership rank mix - 1 point Teamwork and Leadership - 1 point Problem Solving* - 10 points * The breakdown of scoring for Problem Solving will be different for each Station. This is a fluid event, changing each year and staffed as needed to create a better experience for all. Sled Information The sled below can be used as a guide by Scouts in designing their sleds. Have fun and use your imagination! Your own design will be accepted if it conforms to the specified requirements and dimensions. Make sure the sled is strong enough to bear the weight of your driver and your equipment, and that it will hold together for a long trip! TIPS: Use screws instead of nails. Drill first to avoid splitting the wood. Varnish the bottom of the runner, and then wax before the derby. Add wire netting or a canvas snow curtain to keep your equipment from dropping off the sled! Secure the tow rope firmly so your huskies do not get separated from the sled. You can use old snow skis as runners, but they must be attached to a solid piece of wood to the top of the ski, and then join the rest of the sled frame to the support wood on the ski. This will give more stability to the sled frame. If you don t have skis, you can screw a piece of strap iron to the bottom of each runner.
