DECEMBER 2013 Do NOT park in the middle of the lot at the Pavilion. Stay within the lines. Inside this issue: Message from IDTC President 1 The World is Your Oyster 3 Message from IDTC President What a great year Take at look at all of the activities the Club engaged in during the year! All due to the members who take on both big challenges and mundane tasks putting on events like the holiday party, organizing classes, teaching and assisting with classes, holding CGC and TT tests, making appearances at parades and open houses, keeping track of finances and memberships, producing newsletters and maintaining the website are just some of the activities that you members have supported it takes a lot of hands to keep this club viable. We re a diverse group brought together by our mutual interest in our dogs and like any pack, we have our differences and disagreements but we all share a love of dogs and that is what matters most. Class Schedule 5 Holiday Party 6 Brags 6 Year in Review 6 In Memoriam 10 Membership Renewal Form 12 Upcoming Events 12 Calendar What can we look forward to in the new year? Another great CPE agility trial, lots of fun at Friday night agility league but what about classes? More importantly, they are what makes the Club work. When you join IDTC, you are considered an active member for the first year. After that, active membership is maintained by putting in a minimum of 10 hours per year doing things for the Club, such as assisting or instructing a class, helping out at events (e. g. being a steward at trials, providing refreshments for a graduation, making arrangements to bring in a seminar speaker, etc.), or serving on a committee such as the Training Committee. Active members are also expected to regularly attend the monthly Club meetings. Your active/inactive status for a year is determined by your participation during the previous year. Page 2

The World is Your Oyster by Debbie Bell Did you know there s a vast world of events available for you and your dog to enjoy? Although some have specific breed requirements, most are open to dogs of any parentage - with the opportunity for titles as an added bonus. With a bit of research, you ll find the perfect activity that you and your dog will both enjoy. So what s out there? Here is just a small sampling of the opportunities. Let s begin with obedience! In addition to AKC, obedience trials are offered by the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA), United Kennel Club (UKC) and the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) - and all within a reasonable drive from Ithaca. While all are similar, each organization has different rules and requirements. For example, a Novice recall in UKC requires a recall over a jump with a steward at each side. Training for one event can enhance your ability to succeed in the others. Rally offers even more opportunities, with events in AKC, UKC, CKC, ASCA, and World Cynosport (formerly APDT), to name a few. Some of these organizations have programs that permit High in Trial awards, unlimited opportunities for advanced titles, and even annual invitationals. If your dog likes to run and chase, there are lure coursing trials and amateur racing events for specific breeds, but also all-breed coursing ability tests offered by UKC and AKC. Many dogs have a grand time chasing a white trash bag around the field. Owners of herding breeds may enjoy honing their dogs skills in a variety of herding trials, but there are also unofficial Herding Instinct Tests for any dog with an aptitude, usually with a certificate awarded. Dogs with great noses can try AKC tracking, an event where a dog follows the scent of a human tracklayer. That fabulous nose can also track furred game or upland birds as a component of competitive hunting in AKC, NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) and the HRA (Hunting Ridgeback Association). New York State offers a Leashed Tracking Dog license program for dogs trained to locate lost and wounded deer for hunters. Earth Dog trials are available for terrier types who can navigate and find rats underground, while the new Barn Hunts offer all dogs the chance to try above-ground searches for caged rats hidden among bales of hay. Nosework events test the dog s ability to quickly locate the source of specific unique scents like cloves within a given area. UKC and some other organizations offer air dog or dock dog events for dogs who happily launch after a toy into a pool. The breeds that enjoy this sport might surprise you. One current World Championship level competitor is a Whippet! Flyball is a fast-paced sport that s particularly well suited to very active dogs. Teams of dogs run relay races over low hurdles to a special box. The dogs hit the box to release a ball which is then retrieved back to the start prior to the next dog s run. Some of these teams are incredibly fast! Page 3

Agility is wildly popular. Just a few of the current agility venues include AKC, ASCA, UKC, CPE (Canine Performance Events), NADAC (National American Dog Agility Council) and USDAA (United States Dog Agility Association, Inc.). The games, rules and titles vary as well as the obstacles in a way that keeps training interesting. Weight pulls, dog sledding and carting all require the dog to pull a conveyance using a harness. Weight pulling may be the most popular with many different events available. This is a fascinating sport in which the handler trains the dog to pull a weighted wagon or sled for a short distance within a certain period of time. The dogs are never permitted to fail, with the wagons or sleds pushed if the dogs are unable to move them. There are huge numbers of other events, some offered by small organizations or specialized to test the unique abilities of certain breeds or types of dogs. As one example, the HRA offers carriage dog events for specific breeds in which the dog is expected to instinctively work off-lead behind a horse-drawn cart or wagon for several miles while under verbal control by the owner. In short, the sky is the limit in terms of trying new and different events. Why compete in multiple venues? Each tells you something different about your team, yet complements the work you do in the other events. Some are more difficult than others, or have unique challenges that are unavailable in other venues. Some are geared more toward having fun while others can be very competitive. Considering all of them will allow a dog and handler the opportunity to find events that both truly enjoy. I highly recommend you expand your horizons by trying multiple events with your dogs. In my experience, the people and atmosphere in each different venue vary as much as the rules and requirements. You ll learn new training techniques that will enhance both your skills and those of your dog in surprising and unexpected ways. Gone are the days of choosing conformation, obedience or tracking as your only options for competition. Today, the world truly is your oyster. Get out there and enjoy the buffet! 6 IDTC Holiday Party Joe Osmeloski The annual IDTC Holiday party was held from 11-3 this Sunday, Dec 7th, at the Ramada Inn. We had approximately 40 attendees, and many great and fun happenings took place, which I will try to review as the events unfolded. From approximately 11 am to 12 noon, everyone mingled, sampled the great spread of food provided and GENER- OUSLY bought an array of raffle tickets. At this time, I would like to thank Judy Roberts, Lisa Mitchell, and Sue Morse, for helping do a great job collecting all the money and handing out the tickets. Also, many thanks to all the members who supplied items to be raffled off. Besides the Items donated for raffle, we had a 50/50 raffle to benefit Sue Beals, and we had a large array of "house" pre-paid gift cards, generously supplied by the IDTC. The raffles for the donated items, and "house" gift cards took place all through the festivities, and most people won something, except for a certain few (like unlucky Ray). Top winner in the donated items was Tammy Snyder, who took home 2 items and offered none to poor Ray. Even yours truly won a great Christmas Breakfast basket supplied by Margh Pough. Big winners in the gift cards were Betsy Root, who is inviting everyone to Applebees for dinner, and Marian Szebenyi, who now owns part of Pet Smart. Next up on the agenda was Betty Baldwin going through the myriad of awards proudly garnered by the club, but special mention needs to be made for our two MACH title recipients. Sue Morse and Kathy Hildreth both attained the highest honor in Agility, as Kathy got her Mach with Magic, and Sue with Kiss. Both great accomplishments and Kathy also announced the formation of the "magic award" named in honor of her great dog. At the end of Betty's presentation, it seems that she and Kerry Boisvert decided to clean out her garage, and came up with some fantastic "awards" that need to be noted: First, there was the "fine wine award" that Margh Pough won I guess for aging gracefully, then Rue Chagoll won the Lee Majors award, I guess for looking strikingly similar to the six million dollar man, then I won an award for sounding like Harry Carey, and Anne Williams won the "Ive got your back award" for constantly saving Kerry s bacon. I cant speak for the other recipients, but I certainly will NEVER FORGET, these awards. Up next on this busy day was the awarding of IDTC's most prestigious award, the Good Spotsmanship award, which was presented by Tammy Snyder. The proud recipient and very deserving winner was Hannah Robinson, who was speechless accepting the award. Next on our agenda was our great "steal a gift" game, and boy, how we found out how ruthless this bunch can get. Nobody s gift was safe and just about everybody either stole or had stolen a gift. The array of "gifts" was amazing, but special recognition goes to Tammy Snyder who turned a picture of Ulysses S. Grant into a bizarre array of Chicken Poop, Monkey Butt powder, and some rotten dog bone. Also one lucky participant came away with a "50 shades of Chicken" recipe book, and one of the hottest items, strangely enough for this group was a BOX OF TWINKIES. The big winner, however, was Kerry Boisvert, who grabbed that $50.00 bill from Rue so fast, that Rue had burn marks on his fingers. Also, special thanks go out to Rue Chagoll, and Ray Corey (who still won nothing) for being our Gift judges for the game. Last but not least, and most importantly given the time of year for giving, was the 50/50 raffle to benefit Sue Beals. The members generously spent $ meaning that the winner would get $73.00 and Sue would get that same amount, however our winner, Margh Pough donated another $20.00 of her winnings giving Sue a total of $ Thanks to all and especially Margh. Also, the Items raffled netted the club another $ Thanks to all that attended, helped and won awards. Happy Holidays to all IDTC members. Page 6

IDTC BRAGS Bruce Coleman Another exciting weekend (with Golden Retrievers), this time at Leatherstocking in Syracuse, NY. This three day weekend was close to home, so at least we slept in our own bed each night. Vinny qualified in Open Friday and Saturday earning his CDX on Saturday. He placed third on Saturday. So, of course we moved him up to Utility on Sunday. He looked really good, the only thing he missed was the signal sit. So it s off to three trials in Pennsylvania in December. Fanny qualified three days in Open, and Saturday in Utility, earning her 7th UDX leg. On Saturday she won her fourth Utility B class and high combined. Her enthusiasm (forging) always impresses people. And not to be bored, Bruce also shared: Audrey and I were at the Valley Forge Kennel Club shows this last weekend. On Saturday, Vinny earned his first Utility leg winning the Utility B class with a score of 194. There were 18 dogs in the class. On Sunday, we had a good class except he missed one article. He is still green showing in Utility. Congratulations Bruce, Vinny and Fanny! Chris O Brien While the Holiday Party was in full-swing and after a lot of mints, Aussie Jazz completed his 2nd and 3rd legs to earn his ASCA CD title at the HONYASC trials in Syracuse Dec 7-8. He finished this title with a 2nd place (to Jen Grimm and Troy) with a Whew! And he had to sit next to a GSD on Saturday! Good boy, Jazz! Lucille Straub GSD Cody earned HIT at the HONYASC obedience trial on Saturday in the Novice B class. [editor s note: Cody was the GSD sitting next to Jazz]. Well done, Lucille and Cody! 10 IN MEMORIAM 2013 (Remembering those special dogs that left us in 2013) "It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are" -Unknown Brooke Debrue s Our Miss Brooke CDX, RE Golden Retriever 1/19/ /21/2012 Owned and loved by Rue Chagoll (and Lisa Mitchell) For ten years, Brooke was my only dog, my only training partner, obtained through Golden rescue. She'll be remembered for a number of things, being an avid training partner not one of them. But she worked to make her Dad happy and was the apple of my eye. I was never prouder of a dog than when she qualified twice in Utility. Lameness struck us both about the same time, so we never got to finish that title; maybe we'll get that third leg someday the other side of the Bridge. Brookie, you'll always be my Princess Angel. Calib Bernese Mountain Dog 8/28/ /2012 Owned and loved by Lisa Mitchell (and Rue Chagoll) Calib didn t see the point of obedience, but he was the greatest therapy dog! Skyla Golden Retriever 2/1/1999 6/30/2013 Loved by Chris O Brien (and Tom Sessler) Skyla was my first Rescue dog and my first Golden Retriever. She introduced me to IDTC and we earned her CGC way back when. Skyla was the Queen Bee in the house and kept all of the other Rescues as well as cats in line in the house. Even when she was barely able to walk, she still ruled the roost. Page 10

Bonnett Ch, ARCHX, C-ATCH III Honeycreek Easter Bonnett CGC,HIC,Can CD, CDX, RAE, AX, AXJ, OF, AJP, AXP, OFP, RLCX2,RL2X,RL3, CL3, CL4, ChST, ChCL, ChWC, ChSN, ChJP, ChFH, ChJU,ROM1 Belgian Malinois 11 years, 11 months Owned and loved by Susan Morse Bonnett was a wonderful companion and show dog. She finished her championship quite fast mainly because of her fantastic movement. She was the daughter of Whisper and mother of Cane and four other pups. Bonnett and Kiss father was the first Malinois Herding Champion in AKC and AHBA. Throughout her show career, she had a number of medical problems and almost died five times due to major internal infections. We were fortunate to have one litter of puppies and still be able to earn the above titles (46 titles in all). Bonnett showed in AKC, CKC, APDT and CPE. She had fantastic work ethic and always was willing to try if encouraged. She obtained ROM I (American Belgian Malinois Register of Merit) which is one of the highest honors of our national club. Her son Cane and her half-sister Kiss are also ROM I. This places them in a select group of less than a hundred at the national level since To receive this honor, they had to reach high levels of performance and conformation titles and have health clearances. Unfortunately, in the end cancer got to her and, to not prolong misery, we had to part with her. I miss her terribly as she was my steady and faithful companion. Was the Grand dame of the pack for many years and just my Bon Bon. To see Bonnett in her happy performance years, check out the web site: malinoishoneycreekfarm.com. Darwin SR Lennoxlove Turkyridge Darwin NSDTRC-USA WCI VC, AKC UD RE OA OAJ JH; CKC CDX JH AGN WCI Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever 4/18/ /28/2012 Owned and loved by Liz, Ray and Adam Corey We lost our Darwin yesterday. Darwin was our first Toller and he changed our lives. He introduced us to the world of breed clubs and dog events. He was our first competitive obedience dog, first field test dog, first agility dog, first conformation dog he had to endure all our mistakes, but his accomplishments also triggered the powerful first emotions: Ray trembled uncontrollably with excitement as Dar swam back with his final WC bird, and I cried with joy when Dar completed his final UD leg. We fondly remember all the travelling to US and Canadian toller events plus local (and not so local) obedience, field and agility trials. He was a demo dog for IDTC and he attended a few interclub matches. People seemed to know Darwin wherever we went he was the tall, animated toller with the big white blaze and happy expression that invited everyone to approach him. He never balked at anything we asked him to do - although sometimes he had to do it his own way. Most of all, he just loved being with us and he never slowed down. He was an irreplaceable companion. I think he enjoyed his life; we certainly enjoyed him. Last night the space next to my bed where he slept for 13 years was vacant, and this morning nobody woke me up at 5 AM trying to convince me it was time for breakfast an hour early. Our house is still full of tollers but the void is almost unbearable. Life has changed again. For the love of dogs we grieve, for the love of dogs we go on... Page 11
