Spring is just around the corner with new changes and events at Phydeaux. If you are a fan of Honest Kitchen Pecks: Buffalo & Blueberry Treats, you may notice their absence from our shelves. There has been a buffalo shortage in the pet industry recently and has halted production of these treats. If buffalo becomes available in the near future Honest Kitchen will continue to make the treats. If not, they will be replacing the buffalo in the treats with beef. If you need more information on the changes go to thehonestkitchen.com or ask any Phydeaux employee. We also want to thank everyone that came out to the Cary location on February 26th to get their pets photos taken. The photos are going on the wall of the new Chuy s Tex Mex in Cary, opening in April. The photos were taken by Chuy s for a $5 donation and 100% of the proceeds were given to South of the Bully Rescue. Thanks to all the Phydeaux customers who came out, more than $150 was raised during this event!
Letter from the Editor (continued) You will start to see the pollen soon, but with that comes some of the nicest weather of the year. There are a lot of pet-friendly events happening throughout the Triangle this Spring. Keep your eyes peeled for posters on our community boards at each Phydeaux location to learn more about these events. You can visit us on the weekends for adoption events with a variety of rescue groups if you want to get out and meet some dogs or cats! You can find the current list of scheduled adoption events in the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter. It is ever changing, so be sure to check out our website for an up-to-the-minute list of events going on at all three Phydeaux stores. Most of you know we moved from Seaboard Station to the intersection of Six Forks Road and Atlantic Blvd. We are almost done with the finishing touches and we are going to have a party to celebrate! The grand opening event is scheduled for March 26th. You will find many rescue groups in attendance, raffles, prizes, and so much more! Be sure to look out for more information on our Facebook page, as well as our website, and in our stores! We hope to see everyone there to celebrate! Karen Byrne *Note: If you have any pet related questions or issues, please them to the editor: pr@phydeaux.com
Q and A: Part 1 Have questions? We have answers! Q: My dog is blowing his coat now that it is warming up. What s the best brush to use? Short answer: A: This can vary depending on the type of dog you have and his coat type. Many people are huge fans of the Furminator to resolve the storm of pet hair in their homes. This is a wonderful tool, I own one myself, but it is important to keep in mind that it is made with the concept of a blade. Overuse of the Furminator can damage the guard hairs on your dog and make for a drier, rougher coat. If you own a Furminator, remember to use it minimally and to utilize other brush options such as a slicker brush as well. A slicker brush will grab a lot of loose hairs and is wonderful for all coat types. Also using a curry brush can help. This will brush any loose hairs to your dog s rear and you just brush off this excess hair. Rakes can help keep longer coats untangled as well as grab any loose hairs and untangle mats. Remember not to over bathe your dog if they are blowing their coat. Excessive bathing can make for more loose hair and for dry skin issues. As always, if you have questions about what the right tool is for your pet, never hesitate to ask a Phydeaux employee.
Q and A: Part 2 Have questions? We have answers! Q: My cat won t stop scratching the couch. How do I make him stop? Short answer: There are a lot of things to consider if your cat is doing this. Do you have anything around specific for your cat to scratch on? You may want to look into purchasing a cat tree. If you have one, maybe get another one for the room that he is scratching in, or move it to that room. Also have other options for scratching such as cardboard scratchers and toys. If they don t want to use any of these items you can try putting catnip or honeysuckle on them to make them more enticing to your cat. The cat may be more likely to use these if there is something stimulating about his options. You can also try using doubled sided tape or Sticky Paws. The sticky texture is usually very unappealing to cats and they may stop scratching if you place it over the problem areas. Finally, you can also try moving the couch or even moving an object next to the couch so that the cat can t get to the spot that he continuously scratches. Sometimes a combination of approaches is the best remedy. Always keep in mind that this behavior can form from getting a new pet, moving furniture in your home, moving, etc. Cats most likely scratch inappropriately from change and or anxiety. This will help you better understand why your cat is doing it and help you to fix the problem.

Featured Product: Tuscan Naturals Tuscan Natural is a small pet food company, located in Las Vegas, that started over a dinner in Italy. When dipping bread in olive oil, the owner wondered why this had never been introduced into pet food, and Tuscan Natural was born. Olive oil promotes protein absorption by increasing pancreatic enzymes. That means every bit of kibble is going that much farther for your pet. Olive oil is also an antioxidant, it reduces the risks of cancer and diabetes. The best part, there is a full 15oz bottle in every 30lb bag! Tuscan Natural is offered in 3 lines including Simply Pure, Harvest Chicken and Vegetable, and Carne. Simply Pure is a limited ingredient, hypoallergenic diet with 3 different flavors including lamb, chicken, and ocean extreme. Harvest Chicken and Vegetable is a basic food pyramid food, giving your pet all around health. Carne is their grain free, high protein formula. All these formulas are offered in dog and cat, with the exception of Simply Pure in the lamb and chicken flavors, which are only offered in dog. If you have any questions on any of these formulas, or on which one is best for your pet, be sure to ask a Phydeaux employee next time you are in to visit us! whirlwindzor/brusheezy.com
Pet Profile Featured Pet(s) Jackson Owned by Keri in Phydeaux Raleigh How did you come to live with your owner? A nice family had an accidental litter, and my owner came to visit. What would you consider to be your best feature? My bat-like ears. Do you have any nicknames? Action Jackson. Do you have any special talents? Army crawling and Chewbacca mumbles. What s your favorite pastime? Sleeping/burrowing under the covers. Anything else you would like us to know about yourself? I find invisible popsicles when people scratch my behind.

A Worthy Cause Featured Pet Organization of the Month Carolina Hearts Aussie Rescue Carolina Hearts Aussie Rescue is a volunteer based organization whose purpose is rescue and place herding dogs into forever homes. While that sounds rather easy, it is not. Herding dogs do not do well in shelters and typically shut down. Their instincts and high intelligence lead them to become fearful and over stimulated in shelter environments. This often makes them seem un-adoptable to shelter staff and these healthy, well-behaved animals are often euthanized without ever having a chance to be on the adoption floor. Carolina Hearts Aussie Rescue is currently finalizing their nonprofit status and will have a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation status by mid They are funded solely by donations, fundraisers, and adoption fees. Most of the dogs have are obtained from animal shelters in North Carolina, South Carolina and surrounding states however they do receive owner surrenders as well. Carolina Hearts Aussie Rescue was founded by a group of very active animal rescue volunteers who felt a small regional focused rescue group was a much more viable alternative to national groups they d all been a part of. CHAR grew out of the hearts of the volunteers whose sole purpose is to take an unwanted dog and find them their forever home.
