President s Message We re starting the New Year with a few personnel changes on the board of directors. Nelle Wyatt has left her position on the board but will continue to be active in the breed and the club. Nelle s service to the PHCA and the Board of irectors is deeply appreciated. We re pleased to have Howard Foster join the board and look forward to a fresh perspective as we continue working on improved communication within our club. Speaking of communication, the web committee is excited to start implementing the results of our membership survey. We re looking for help, so if there is anyone out there with web or writing skills, please contact Carmen avis and she ll put you to work. Jane Hodnett has been elected our Treasurer this year, so Nancy is busy getting the records transferred over to her. Once that is taken care of later this month, Jane will be including a financial report in upcoming Scribes as part of her new duties. The board will be meeting in March. One of the things we will be handling at that time will be the reaffirmation of committees. If you are interested in working on one of our committees, please don t hesitate to let me know. We would love to have members participate at this level. We re looking forward to an exciting and productive year. I hope to see you on the show grounds and/or the lure coursing fields. Cynthia Guinn President 4

CHIC UPATE ear Membership: The Pharaoh Hound has been added to the CHIC website. Currently, there is only one dog who qualifies for a CHIC number. That dog is Naha Tuatha e Ogma (owned by Robert and Claudia Simpson). FYI for Pharaohs, there are 356 with hip results, 6 with patella results and only 5 with thyroid results in the current OFA database. Keep in mind that all of the requirements set forth for Pharaoh Hounds need to be fulfilled in order to get a CHIC number. Sincerely, Stephen 7

Rescue Report ecember proved to be a very busy time for our rescue efforts. A young rescue turned up in Oregon. His breeder was found and was willing to take responsibility for him. He was fostered by Cynthia Guinn and Bill Martin and a great permanent home was found for him very quickly. Thanks to everyone involved in this. Also in Oregon due to the death of the owner, elderly Pharaoh Hounds were orphaned. The owner s sister was not able to care for them. There was a year old male and an year old female. The male had been bred by Kay urr and Rebecca Stephens & Margie Luck immediately took responsibility for him. The female had been co-bred by Lorna Harper and she too, accepted responsibility and began making arrangements to have them both shipped to her. Both will live out their lives with Lorna in Texas. Thanks you guys!! In Virginia a young male turned up in a shelter. We were able to identify his breeder as well as a past foster mom. He has been adopted by long time Pharaoh Hound owner Rachel Lachow and all reports show he is now doing just great! In Vermont, over 5 dogs were in need of rescue. Sadly, one of those was a Pharaoh Hound. Bonnie Folz immediately began working on helping this dog, and with the cooperation of the local humane society, was given permission to pull him. The owner of these dogs was very cooperative in assisting the rescue efforts. Bonnie was not only able to pull the Pharaoh, but also all the other breeds needing help. ominic Carota graciously offered to foster Poe until more permanent arrangements could be made. He went from ominc s to the home of a co-worker of Bonnie and from there was sent to long time Pharaoh Hound owners in Wyoming. It was a long trip getting there, but a happy ending. Ra is going to live with a gentleman and his son on Merritt Island, Florida. Missy Thom & I have decided we will keep Missy with us. We believe she has far too many issues to successfully readjust to yet another move. She still has some demons she s chasing, but has come a LONG way from where she started. Archer remains with Nelle Wyatt and continues to improve all the time. Several false alarms, but all thoroughly checked out and proven not to be Pharaoh Hounds.

In January Ben & Mo Brodeur were having some work done in their home. The gentleman doing the work was talking about his year old daughter and her love of dogs. He was fascinated by Luxor & Sultan and said he wished his daughter could see them. Ben printed some pictures of the boys taken in the back yard and coursing and gave them to him to take home. The next day when he returned, he brought with him a poem his daughter had written. PHARAOH S OG By Mariana Gonzalez I sit proud on pharaoh s throne, making sure my presence is known. I run quick in pharaoh s field, my royalty is very real. I bark loud at pharaoh s cat, taking royal feline naps. I cuddle close to pharaoh s chest, in his hand I peacely rest. I know pharaoh loves me well and would never confine me in a cell. I chewed his slippers can he tell? 3

OUTSIE OGS By ennis Fetko, Ph Unless you're medically intolerant of the dog (and therefore can't take care of him in a medical emergency, so you shouldn't have the dog anyway), making a dog stay outside is a costly waste. If he's for protection, what do you think I want to steal - your lawn? When you leave, do you put your valuables and your kids out in your yard? Just what is the dog protecting out there? Most dogs kept outside cause far more nuisance complaints from barking and escaping than any deterrent to intrusion. Such complaints cause teasing, antagonism, release and poisoning. With your dog a helpless victim, it's no laughing matter. If I'm a crook and your dog is out, your fence protects ME, not your possessions or your dog. If I just open the gate, 9 out of dogs will run off! I can safely shoot, stab, spear, poison, snare, strangle them, or dart through the fence and you just lost your dog AN everything I steal! If he's tied up and I keep out of reach, he's useless. He'll bark, but outside dogs bark so much, they're usually ignored. But let a dog hit the other side of a door or window I'm breaking into, and I'm GONE! I can't hurt the dog until he can hurt me, and nothing you own is worth my arm. eterrence is effective protection. Protection and aggression are not the same. Protection is defensive, reactive, often passive, and threatens or injures no one. Aggression is active, harmful and offensive, threatens all and benefits none. Yard dogs often develop far more aggression than protectivity because everyone who passes by or enters has already violated the territory that dog has marked dozens of times a day for years. That's not protection, it's not desirable and it overlooks two facts of life today: First, property owners have implied social contracts with others in the community. Letter carriers, paper boys, delivery people, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, meter readers and others are allowed near and at times on your property without your specific permission. And sure that ten-year-old was not supposed to jump your fence after his Frisbee; but neither you nor your dog are allowed to cause him injury if he does. Imagine this: A neighbor looks into your yard or window and sees you, your wife or child laying on the floor in a pool of blood. They call 9-- and your dog prevents paramedics from assisting! Should they shoot your dog or just let you die? Great choice. 4

Second, even if the intruder is a criminal, few places allow you or your dog to cause physical injury to prevent property loss. Convicted felons have sued the dog's owner from jail and won more in the suit than they ever could have stolen! Appalling? True. And don't be foolish enough to believe your homeowner's insurance will cover the loss. Now you see why many feel that an outside dog is a no-brainer. The more a dog is outdoors, the less behavioral control you have. It's easier to solve four or five indoor problems than one outdoor problem. The reason is valid and simple: The more you control the stimuli that reaches your dog, the more you control the responses. You've got a lot more control over your living room than you do over your entire county! When your dog is bored, but teased by every dog, cat, bird, squirrel, motorcycle, paperboy, airplane, firecracker and backfiring truck in the county, OF COURSE he'll dig, chew, and bark. Would you sit still all day everyday? o you want unnecessary medical and parasite fees, especially as the dog ages? When a dog is alone indoors, you are still 3% there because your scent and things he associates with you, constantly remind the dog of you and your training. When he's out, your dog is alone whether you're home or not. o you really expect him to keep YOU in mind while the entire world teases, distracts and stimulates him? The media is full of stories about the family dog saving everyone's life during a fire. How many people, including children, would be dead today if those dogs were kept outside? SURE - you ALWAYS get up to investigate every time your yard dog barks. And I've got this bridge. An outdoor dog has an address, not a home. ogs offer real value as companion animals. Stop behavior problems and start enjoying real protection and companionship. Bring your dogs inside. ennis Fetko, Ph. 5

A Cinderella Story *Submitted by: Zan Earnest In September of 6, in an attempt to help my 66 year old mother locate a suitable companion dog, I was combing the websites of various local rescue groups and visiting local shelters. One Saturday afternoon, I saw on Atlanta Pet Rescue s website, a red dog that they claimed was a Pharaoh Hound. We have two Greyhounds and were familiar with the breed. In fact we had done some research as we were interested in possibly getting one some day. We thought that what Atlanta Pet Rescue had was probably a red colored dog that someone had decided was a Pharaoh mix. Curiosity led us to visit the rescue group when they next opened just to see. We found that the rescue group had a small Pharaoh girl that they had gotten from Cobb County Animal Control a kill shelter where she had been turned in by her former owners. The owners said that they couldn t keep her because they had a sick child. She looked very thin and scared as she was in a pen with several other dogs that kept jumping up on her. We asked to see her. When we got her out, the first thing she did was give me a big hug. She seemed to be saying Get me out of here!!! About that time, Brianna Brown showed up and Ied her as a Pharaoh. She gamely tried to talk us out of adopting her. She said that her owners probably turned her in because she was hyper and barked a lot. Her attempts to dissuade us fell on deaf ears we were already in love. Brianna was right; she does bark a lot and has plenty of energy. She also was not housetrained and had clearly never been taught to walk on a leash. House and leash manners came quickly with a little work. She makes me laugh at least once a day, is snuggly at all the right times, and we would never give her up. She and I have also recently discovered that lure coursing is lots of fun. Rosemary now sleeps on the bed and always lets us know when we have visitors. We weren t looking for a dog when we found her, but it seems she was looking for us. 6

In Fond Memory In November 7, the Pharaoh Hound family lost a true friend with the sudden passing of Celaine Burns of Miami, Florida. Although personal circumstances prevented Celaine from being an active member of the PHCA for several years, her contributions and dedication to our breed was remarkable. Celaine was one of the first people to help with organizing the PHCA Rescue Committee; helping to draft policies and procedures as well as fostering many of our early rescue dogs. She was one of the founding members of the now inactive Pharaoh Hound Club of Florida. She was one of the lead people who organized the Florida National Specialty which debuted the first PHCA Top Ten Event. Celaine and her husband Kerry bred and showed under the kennel name of Raka Pharaoh Hounds, including one of our early top winning dogs, Ch Raka s King Khanrad of Holiday. Memorial services were private and Celaine s family has requested that anyone who would like to pay tribute to her life, send a donation in Celaine s name to the PHCA Rescue Fund, in care of our Treasurer, Jane Hodnett. Celaine will be very much missed by those who were lucky enough to have known her. 7

7 Eukanuba meet the breeds.. Thanks to the creative decorative skills of Sue Carter, and the willingness of Robert Newman and ominic Carota, to spend two days and endless hours manning the Pharaoh Hound booth at the 7 Eukanuba Meet the Breeds in Long Beach, California in ecember our booth was a popular place for spectators to visit and spend time. More than anyone else, however a giant thanks is extended to Logan (C Hallam s Baku Ra Qena) for his limitless patience and endearing personality while he entertained the large crowds of people who marveled at his long list of tricks and gentlemanly manners. Logan was given a few breaks when his friends, Evan and Femi took over to give him a well earned rest. Thanks to Linda Witt and Brianna Brown for the time they spent helping in the booth. Jan Christman was a more than welcome sight at the end of the event when she arrived to help tear everything down and get it ready for transport back to the Bay area and into Sue Carter s keeping until next time. Several of the Pharaoh Hound exhibitors were able to make appearances at the booth as well, so we were well represented. ue to the efforts of many people, our booth enjoyed a large crowd of spectators both days. Thanks to everyone from the entire Pharaoh Hound community for representing our breed so beautifully!! 8

COURSING U.S.A. LURE COURSING REPORT NOV-EC 7 Written By: Bekki Pina Contributed by: Robert Newman, Carman, avis, Samatha Parsons, enise Gentile, Jayme Jones, Mike Rotundi, Brianna Brown, Sandy Vernon, Julie Gwin What an outstanding two months for coursing. Pharaoh Hounds rocked the field. Many of our hounds walked off the field with BIFs. Amazing. Better yet many dogs attained their Field Championship titles. Versatility at it s best. See the details below. NOV Nov: Cartersville, GA Well is was a beautiful blustery sunny day. We all have windburn... So entered was Phancy and Atreyu. We mixed the stake as he was the only FCH and she was the only Open. It was at Cartersville, GA and the field was OK except for those darn sand spurs again... Brianna made omelet's that were out of this world. Lunch was BUFFALO FRANKS AN HOMEMAE APPLE PIE!!! Trey started out being a clown, at one point he grabbed the bunny, flipped himself over, all legs in the air and looked over his shoulder trying to figure out why the bunny was going and he wasn't... he figured it out though. Phancy had a beautiful run. Zan, her husband, Rob and their beautiful girl Rosemarie showed up for some Pharaoh phun. Zan and Rob offer homemade pecan tarts with plastic container and everything. Rosie, was so friendly she just wanted to see everything. She wasn't much interested in the lure at first. After we got her to finally stand still for her ILP pictures, she was allowed to practice at lunch. They bumped the lure next to her and WHOA!!! Was she keyed up. She stayed true!!!!! Beautiful, so now that she will get her ILP she will be certed!!! Zan said she cannot believe she did not contact us earlier...we said we know and shame on her!!! LOL!!! nd run, Trey and Phancy ran really well!!! The run-off looked awesome!!! These two have such style... Phancy won BOB. She ran a VERY nice course of BIF. If I were the judge, it was between Phancy and Sailor the IB...who I thought had won the II as he was so INCREIBLE!!! However, I was wrong just the breed at II. So ribbons come and Phancy would've had the perpetual trophy, but we were told that the winner of the regional two years ago, never returned it. When they get it back, Phancy's name will be engraved on it!!! Then for the winner of BIF and the winner of the Region 7. Sailor won it, but Phancy was a VERY close nd!!!! 6 Nov: Calhoun, GA Our newest coursing field is in Calhoun, about 3 minutes north of Cartersville in rural Georgia. The rolling field on a private residence was a challenge for the hounds and a treat to the eye. Brianna, Bekki and I were entertained between runs by bluebirds flitting thru vibrant fall colors, long flying wedges of honking geese overhead. The cool weather put roses in our cheeks and vigor into the hounds. Both mornings began with Brianna s madeon-site hot breakfast roll-ups, eggs, bacon and cheese, with French press coffee and cocoa. Simmering homemade stews and sides each day. esserts to die for.. including a birthday cake for Bekki with a photo of Trey in full coursing leap. Added this time to the Pharaoh Palace were butane catalytic heaters to ward off the chill along with Brianna's new camp stove. Tarps off the sides of the tent blocked the chilly wind and blowing rain. We and the dogs stayed rather snuggly, toasty warm with lap throws and the warmest of comrades. Only three PH running in this event: Trey, Phancy and Reign ran clean, hard and strong as a self-disciplined respectful pack, intent on getting the bunny. Since they know and honor each other, it was like a movie to watch the three spread over the field in hunting formation. Very nice comments and congrats from judges, officials and other handlers. Perfectly executed runs each day, each run. Our dogs were separated by single points. Reign was able to barely squeak out BOB each day. The stiffest competition was within our breed itself. On Saturday Reign went on to take Best in Field. So another BIF ASFA pharaoh. His name will be engraved on the perpetual trophy, followed by Pharaoh Hound". Pretty dang impressive since it is Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association where 9% of the winners (and entries) are whippets. 6

6 Nov: CA Another Quirky weekend has come and gone...it was a great time with cool, overcast days, nice running weather. Sunday was kinda chilly but not severe. Bruce and Christie Beetz were our hosts as usual...we had roast turkey and some great sides and desserts for dinner Thursday and lots of good company and camaraderie. It was hound city for playtime and running around the huge fenced area. Corsair was Sam s only entry for the weekend - MeToo stayed home to keep Legend company. Corsair got the white ribbon on Friday - he was warming up for Saturday because he turned it on to win the open stake, BoB and earned his final placement to complete his --- TAA-AA----ASFA FCh Title! Sadly, Allura went into season that day, so she didn't get to play. Glory sends her sister an understanding nuzzle. On Friday, Libby's Zany won the Open/BOB with Zoey winning FCh Stake. On Sunday, Zoey won FCh again. There was a special prize for high scoring Pharaoh Hound throughout the weekend (added up total & prelim scores for all three days) and that went to Miss Zoey. Congrats to new ASFA Field Champions Corsair, Apollo, and Zany 9 ec: North Branch, NJ On arrival to the field on Saturday morning, most of the field that the hounds would be running on was covered with a thin white snowy coating with some ice. As a result the course was adjusted to avoid the icy areas and black bags were used for the JC dogs so they could see the bags. However by the end of all the JC runs (about am), the sun had come out and most of the white field was greenish/brown so black bags were changed to white ones for the actual trial. The weather was chilly on Saturday, about 3 degrees on arrival to the field but it warmed to 4ish with the sun. The weather on Sunday was gray and threatening with the high temp around 38ish. This was a large test/trial with about 5- JCs each day and about dogs in the trial each day. On Saturday, ribbons were given out as the sun was setting (5pm) and on Sunday around 3:3ish. As for PHs, the entry was 4 in open (Aero, Phisher, Phoebe and Phoenix) and 7 in FCh stake (Lyla, Menke, Nahla, Nitro, Phaedra, Sirius, Violet). The humans owned by these PHs that were present at the trial were ominic, Rick and ebbie, George and me. The courses were rather short, about 7 yards or so, so very few of the PHs came off the field breathing heavy. We had some very exciting runs in PHs, lots of speed by many of our kids. The Lure ops had to really work to keep the bunny out in front of them. Great follow on most of the Phounds and some really nice turns showing a lot of amazing agility. The field also had some icy spots so the dogs running in full stride would somehow realize the oncoming icy patch and would gazelle leap over them. I thought they should get extra points for beauty and grace with some of the leaps they made. It was a lot of fun to watch. I've missed coursing, it's been a while. Not all results known. Saturday open stake Phoebe - st 3 point major Phoenix nd point Phisher 3rd Aero 4th Saturday FCh stake Sirius st and BOB 5 LCX points Sunday open Phoebe st and BOB 5 point major Phoenix nd point Phisher 3rd Aero 4th Sunday FCh stake Nahla st - 5 LCX points Violet nd 3 LCX points 5-6 ecember: Riverside Middle School, CA 7

A fun day of coursing in Southern California today, with temps in the high 6s. This location is the school field, flat, large, all grass and it was sunny and dry. Some major schooling at it s best. After all was said and done, Alice's BOSCH won the Open Class to finish his C title by picking up the 5 point major...congrats to Alice and Bosch. He is not only a beautiful boy, but also a great runner. Also in the points from the Open Class were Charlotte's Cadie in second place, and Charlotte's Killian in third place. Logan won the Specials class and Sam's Me Too won the Veterans Stake. In the runoff, it was Bosch's day, as he went BOB. He accomplished this by beating at least 4 BIF PHs, and gave them hell in the BIF run, which ultimately went to the Rhodesian today. Watching BOSCH run, you would have sworn he had a little jockey on his back telling him when to turn at just the right moment, when to fade back and take the inside track, etc etc etc..it was like Man-O-War reincarnated. Since Bosch got his Field Championship, it was time to take it up with the big dogs. Specials stake watch out. However, Logan and he decided they wanted to make it a bit more exciting and tied. Logan forfeited BOB to Bosch. Elliott said he was not going to let all the glory go to the FCs, and picked up the 5 point major from the Open Class, with Phorest in second place and racking up some points. 9-3 ecember: Hanover, PA Nice sunny day pretty warm. Two pharaohs showed up to represent the breed. Blaise, competed in Open and Phoenix in Field Champion. To keep the flow, a mixed stake was run. Both dogs had great runs and in the end Blaise took BOB. So Blaise and Phoenix had a conference and decided this would be a great weekend to show how it s truly done. So Blaise went out against an outstanding Beezer. In grace and style, Blaise took BIF! On Sunday, the gorgeous weather showed up. Rains and sleet moved in on and off in the afternoon but still the show must go on. Again only two PH and again we ran them in mixed runs. Both dogs run so strong and yet so different. Phoenix follows so great and is strong where as Blaise has more of tendency to "hunt" the lure and ends up having to run more of course due to that lack of follow. As the sleet began to really fall Phoenix was declared BOB and no BIF was run due the weather and this being a 3 day event, no one wanted to see the hounds get hurt. Last day Monday, Happy New Year!! And Blaise started it off very well having earned his final points for his ASFA Field Championship. So Phoenix and Blaise ran in Specials together. Again both dogs are very different and very strong. ue to the rains of the day and night before there were puddles all over the field so all the dogs came in wet (anyone for puddle hopping?) but the sun was shining and it was nice day. Blaise again took BOB this time. Blaise also ran for BIF again, bt figured since he got one already this weekend he would give it to the next hardest working dog, which just happened to be a great running greyhound. How nice, Mr. Blaise. A huge thanks to the Upper Chesapeake Saluki club for the wonderful hospitality. No dogs were hurt and the perpetual trophy went to the GH. Blaise and Phoenix will be back next year to try for that trophy once again. 9-3 ecember: Calhoun, GA On Saturday a nice day weather-wise BUT very muddy. We set up the palace and again got MANY compliments to our set up. The humans that showed up were Brianna, Sandy, Newbie Zan with Rosemary, Carol from Ontario with Blaze and Flame and myself. All from Georgia sported orange sherbet colored t-shirts that said "Georgia Team Pharoah" (I can't spell and I made the t-shirts :O) on the front and LOU AN PROU on the back. Everyone commented how appropriate. Unfortunately for Carol, her Flame came into season AT ROLL CALL. How disappointed we all were. Rosemary certed with Sandy's Pickles. What a run and both had such style it was wonderful. However we did make some mistakes that we weren't aware of. You want to do a cert BEFORE roll call so if they pass they can move up to open AN you are not allowed to use a dog that is scheduled to compete that day as a cert dog. However they still passed Rosie. And you want to see a recall...watch Zan and Rosie. You'll see why below. So in Open we had Reign, Phancy and Pickles. Trey in FCH and Rosie in Singles. Open and FCH ran mixed stakes and all were very close in points. Rosie stopped to investigate a whizzing pulley about 3 yds from Zan. All Zan did was stand there and barely yelled..."rosie COME!" Rosie stopped what she was doing and bee-lined with such intensity right past the judges table and right to Zan. Even though she stopped she was scored really well. I think the judges were highly impressed with the recall. At the end of the day..phancy took BOB, there were no forfeitures all weekend, so run-off did happen. Carol even helped slip Reign as did Zan's husband, Rob. Rob made mention that Reign was nothing for him, he could handle Reign. Reign managed to keep getting free so Reign was nicknamed Houdini all weekend. Rob, sorry to say had to eat his words... There was no BIF all weekend as there was a BIE on Monday. On Sunday, it was raining so bad that all of us had to put on dry clothes twice. Rosie was moved up to Open and as the course was very long on Saturday, Pickles being a one day courser sat out the rest of the weekend. All still had great runs, but it was a very dangerous course. Very wet running horizontally across a steep hill. A lot of the dogs were tumbling down the hill. Our guys did ok with it, except on the run-off, Trey looked like Wile E. Coyote, he ran straight off the hill and gravity took a minute to pull him down. He tumbled but was ok, just got the jacket all dirty. 8

Because it was so wet and yucky, they moved the start to the complete other side of the field, but we were already set up, so we piled humans and dogs alike into Sandy's van, stopped at the port-a-potty and had our people procession to them and then had our PH procession to the line...lol then gathered our dogs and piled back into the van and drove back to our palace. Again Phancy won the run off and got the rest of the points to get her outstanding accomplishment of Field Champion. What we figured out later, Phancy got about 4 points cumulative in 7 for ASFA!!! Then on Monday it started out very foggy and couldn't even see the judges tent and had to wait for the fog to lift. Someone needs to invent lighted coursing jackets! They sent Brianna and I to Wal-mart as they had no plastic bags, eh small detail. Sandy took the day off as she had to get out of holiday celebration time and get ready for work. Not only was there fog, but the palace had ice on it!!! We have catalytic heaters in the palace so we stayed warm. Rosie, being her first weekend out had an incredible weekend and really held her own. She got her first points under her belt!!! Phancy won breed again and ran for BIE. She had some very stiff competition to include Sailor from Ontario again. It was getting dark and Phancy was in blue. It was hard to even see the pink never mind the blue, so I think Phancy did not get her fair shake but oh well we all are still very happy for Sailor who won the BIE. A special dedication to an outstanding dog who shall be missed dearly. She left us too soon. Scarlett, officially she was Multi BIF C Churuka Caffeina A-Go-Go, SC. You join a splendid coursing team. ON T FORGET TO MARK YOUR CALENARS!!!! AKC National Lure Coursing Championship September 3-4, 9 Meadowbrook Farm, Snoqualmie WA Run Safe, Run Well, Have Fun. 9
