4 3 WICHITA COUNTY JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SHOW Rules and Regulations All exhibitors will be held to the ethics policy published by the Texas FFA Association and published annually on their website. The students respective AST or CEA will be responsible for having each exhibitor and their parents, sign the appropriate form available from the Texas FFA website. 1. Only Wichita County members of 4-H and FFA clubs are eligible to compete in the Wichita County Jr. Livestock Show. Each FFA member must be certified by their Ag Science Teacher and must be eligible under FFA rules and each 4-H member must be certified by their County Extension Agent and be 9 years old or in the 3 rd grade by Sept 1 st. All exhibitors must be enrolled in Wichita County schools at the time of the County show or reside within the Wichita County line. Exhibitors are prohibited from showing in any other county livestock show. 2. The show reserves to its executive committee, consisting of the current year s President, Vice President, Secretary, Show Treasurer, County Extension Agent(ex-officio), plus one advisor from each organization involved and the division superintendent closest to the issue, the final and absolute right to interpret those rules and regulations, and to arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions, and differences in regard thereto, or otherwise arising out of, or connected with, incidents to the show; and exhibitors who violate any of the rules will forfeit all privileges and premiums and be subject to such penalties as the executive committee may order. Each member of the committee who is present/available to vote on a grievance will vote by yes or no chip method. If the majority votes believe a rule has been broken, the exhibitor and all siblings of that exhibitor will be barred from future exhibition at Wichita County JLS for a two calendar year period starting immediately. 3. Entry fees are as follows: Poultry, Rabbits, Turkeys will be $15.00 per entry. All others will be $20.00 per entry. Entry deadline Dec. 1. Double entry fees Dec No entries will be allowed after Dec All entries must be approved by Vo. Ag. Teachers or County Agents and parents. Entries, entry fees and validation papers must be in the County Extension Office by December 1, A night watchman will be provided. No unsupervised youth on show grounds after midnight. 6. Exhibits that have erroneously entered may be transferred to the proper class prior to the judging; however, no class will be re-opened.

Exhibits entered in the Wichita County Junior Livestock Show will be admitted to the show grounds at the following times only: (unless coming from a major show, and contact has been made with an executive board member) Thursday, beginning at 8:00 A.M. and ending at 1:00 P.M. (For Horses, contact Don Bohannon) 8. Any exhibitor leaving the show grounds with his/her animal prior to the official release time or without the consent of that species superintendent and an official release from the show office, shall forfeit all premiums earned. Exhibitor must have a written permit, provided by the species superintendent, for the release of an animal. The permit must be signed by the superintendent and the parent/guardian of the exhibitor. All animals will remain at the show barn from Thursday until Saturday and may leave upon completion of the cattle show, except broilers, turkeys, rabbits and horses which are free to leave the show grounds after their division shows. 9. Stalls, pens and aisles must be cleaned prior to 8:30 A.M. each day, with refused matter being placed in barrels provided. 10. Each community or group of animals should be supervised at all times. 11. The single system of judging will be used and the judge s decision shall be final. 12. Exhibitors receiving coaching after the animal enters the show ring will disqualify the animal. Coaches and/or parents will not be permitted in the show ring while the animals are being judged, unless a parent is a show official. 13. All protests must be in writing by the parent/guardian or advisor of the exhibitor or by the exhibitor themself. Said complaint must be accompanied by a $100 dollar deposit. An envelope will be available for said complaint and the $100 dollar deposit. If the complaint is justified the deposit will be returned, but if the complaint is not justified, the deposit will be forfeited and deposited to the Wichita County Junior Livestock Show Fund. Any protest before show must be ruled on, before show, by the executive committee. Protest must be presented within 1 hour of the end of that division s activity. (i.e.; weighing, classifying, judging, etc ) 14. In the event that one exhibitor has more than 1 species champion, the sale committee will choose which 1 champion will sale in the premium sale. No exhibitor will be moved up to take the place of the non selling champion.

6 15. Animals must be shown in order to be eligible for the sale. The exhibitor must show his/her own animal, unless excused by the division superintendent. If a student is ineligible because of academics or school related discipline, they will not be allowed to show or sale in the WCJLA show. If student is ineligible, the animal is ineligible. WCJLA will follow UIL rules on eligibility. 16. Any youth that enters a market or breeding animal can show in that division showmanship class. 17. All classification will be at the superintendent s discretion. Any disagreements will be grounds for disqualification. 18. Judges will be selected by a committee of teachers, agents, and division superintendents. 19. All market animal ear tags will be checked as they are weighed and classified for the show. No animals allowed on grounds that are not being exhibited. 20. Exhibitors shall be limited to the sale of (1) market exhibit: Market Steer, Market Swine, Market Lamb, Meat Goat, Turkey (Tom or Hen), Pen of Fryer Rabbits, or Pen of Broilers (Cockerels or Hen). Exhibitor must be present at the Premium Auction in order to receive premium money unless prior arrangements are made with the Executive Board. 21. An award for reserve champion will be awarded, provided there are at least four (4) animals shown in a market division. The breeding divisions are exempt from this rule. 22. Individual exhibitors shall be limited to exhibit three (3) breeding animals per Division. 23. The Wichita County Junior Livestock Show and Sale shall be limited to sell 40% of all eligible exhibits in each market division. Not to exceed 10 Steers, 16 Broilers, 35 lambs, 8 turkey hens, 8 turkey toms, 90 hogs, 35 goats and 8 rabbits (amount varies due to availability). Animals that do not make the top 40% of their class will not be allowed to sell. Premium sale shall not exceed 120 lots per year, % sold will depend on entries showed. 24. A five (5) percent commission will be charged on all animals sold through the show premium sale. 25. All animals will be bedded on wood shavings. Each entry fee will include one bag of shavings, for cattle, sheep, hogs and goats. The voucher system will be used to obtain the shavings from MPEC. 26. All animals in the premium sale will be sold on premium money.

7 6 27. Any student with more than one (1) animals qualifying for the premium sale will be notified by the sale order chairperson that his/her lowest placing animal will be dropped. 28. All market animals are non-terminal. 29. All steer, swine, sheep, goats, heifers, rabbits, broilers, and turkeys will be State and/or County, validated by the County/State Validation committee, at their discretion. The committee will be led by an FFA/4-H advisor with members consisting of that species county show superintendent, other advisors, and parental leaders. This will serve as the WCJL County Validation. Animals not matching the validation forms will be disqualified. Validation chairpersons are responsible for turning in validation records to the County Extension Agent and county show superintendents as soon as possible after validation deadlines. 30. Any rule changes will be noted in Red. No rules will be changed after the current year s catalog has been printed. 31. Alcohol will not be allowed on the show grounds during the Wichita County Junior Livestock Show. 32. Any individual that verbally or physically abuses another person will be subject to disciplinary action. For the purpose of this rule, all action on this type of violation will be relinquished to the Executive Committee. Disciplinary action can be any punishment deemed appropriate by the Executive Committee...including, permanent banishment from any Wichita County Junior Livestock function. 33. Showmanship divisions will be as follows: Jr. 3 rd to 5 th grade, Intermediate 6 th to 8 th grade, and Sr. 9 th to 12 th grade. 34. No animal shown in the breeding show will be eligible to be shown in the market show and no animal shown in the market show will be eligible for the breeding show. 35. All market animals will be shown first with the exception of swine. 36. Unethical Fitting: An animal will be disqualified from the show if it is being trimmed, fitted, or dressed by anyone other than exhibitors themselves, exhibitors family members, a county extension agent, Ag Science teacher while on the show grounds and/or if being fitted unethically. Unethical fitting means any attempt to alter the natural appearance, conformation, musculature or weight of an animal by any unnatural means. Animals showing any signs of being unethically fitted will

8 be disqualified. Examples of unethical fitting include, but are not limited to the following: application of any substance to any part of the animal s body(i.e. paint, adhesive, etc.), unless specifically allowed in the department rules of that species; injection, stomach pumps, or application of any substance per rectum is prohibited, use of injections, draining of fluids, bruising, feeding of material not conducive to the health of the animcal, safety of food, or marketability of its carcass, surgical alterations, artificially filling animals by stomach pumping or airing injections. Stomach pumping or any other method (by esophagus) is prohibited. Many people, over many years, have worked very, very hard to make Wichita County s show the best county show around should prove to be one of the best county shows ever. However, the quality of the show hinges upon the willingness of the adults and kids to strictly follow the rules set forth by the Wichita County Junior Livestock Association. As well as the willingness of the people of Wichita County to realize that any decisions made by this association and its executive committee will be based on what is best for the participants in this show and any future shows. 9 9 POULTRY DIVISION BROILERS 1. A pen will consist of three (3) birds with no weight limit. Pens may consist of hens and/or cockerels. 2. Exhibitors are limited to a maximum of two (2) entries any combination. 3. Broilers must be Ideal birds with wing bands. Each band number will be recorded with the owner of the birds. 4. Top sixteen pens will sell. Not to exceed 40% of the entries. 1. Pen of three chickens (3) to be show in one class. 2. Grand Champion pen of chickens. 3. Reserve Champion pen of chickens. 4. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship (combined with Turkey). TURKEY DIVISION TURKEYS 1. There are no weight limits on turkeys. 2. Exhibitors are limited to one entry per class, consisting of one bird. 3. No minimum on number of birds started. 4. Turkeys must be Houston validated birds. 5. Eight turkey toms and eight turkey hens (not to exceed 40% of entries) will sell. 1. Turkey Toms. 2. Grand Champion Turkey Tom. 3. Reserve Champion Turkey Tom. 4. Turkey Hens. 5. Grand Champion Turkey Hen. 6. Reserve Champion Turkey Hen. 7. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship (combined with Broilers).

10 10 RABBIT DIVISION RABBITS 1. Exhibitor must have ownership and possession at validation. 2. The top 8 pens of rabbits not to exceed 40% will be eligible to sell. 3. Each pen of fryer rabbits must weigh no more than 15 lbs. with plus ½ pound tolerance. 4. Rabbits must not be over 70 days of age. 5. All meat pens of rabbits will be tattooed and validated by the superintendent at a time and sight to be determined. If the exhibitor fails to get his/her meat pens tattooed, they will not be allowed to show. 6. Meat pen entry shall consist of three (3) rabbit fryers. Exhibitors can enter two (2) meat pens. Exhibitor will be allowed to sell one (1) meat pen of three (3) rabbits. 7. An exhibitor will be allowed to show a single fryer rabbit in the single fryer class. The fryer exhibited cannot come from a meat pen of three (3) that have or will be exhibited. Fryer must weigh no more than 6 lbs., with a ½ lb. tolerance. $ dollar premium monies will be paid in this class. 1. Meat pen of 3 fryers. To be shown in one class. 2. Grand Champion Pen of Reserve Champion Pen of Single fryer class. 5. Grand Champion Single Fryer. 6. Reserve Champion Single Fryer. 7. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship.

11 11 MARKET STEER DIVISION MARKET STEER 1. Steer classes will be decided by superintendent. 2. Each exhibitor will be allowed to show two (2) market steers, but will be allowed to sell only one (1) steer. 3. All steers must be weighed on scales provided at the show and the weighing of the steers will be under the supervision of the division superintendent on Thursday from 6:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. 4. Steers must weigh a minimum of 900 lbs. to be eligible for exhibition. 5. Exhibitors must have ownership of animal and be State validated. 6. Blow and Go Show only. No adhesives, artificial hair etc. allowed. 7. Breeds will be broken into British, American, and Exotic. Must have 4 head to make a breed. Weigh and break into appropriate classes. Winners of each breed will show against each other for Grand and Reserve Champion. 1. To be set by superintendent. 2. Grand Champion Steer. 3. Reserve Champion Steer. 4. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship class (combined with Heifers).

12 12 HEIFER DIVISION BEEF HEIFERS 1. All entries must be registered in exhibitor s name. 2. All heifers must be owned by November 1 st. 3. Check in time is 6:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday. Release time is 1:00 until 4:00 on Saturday. 4. Any Beef breed is eligible to show. 5. A $ maximum premium will be added based on 10 entries that arrive and show. (i.e.: 5 head / $ premium) 6. Blow and Go Show only. No adhesives or artificial hair etc. 7. All entries must be State Validated. 1. Younger than 12 months months to under 19 months months to 28 months. 4. Grand Champion Heifer. 5. Reserve Champion Heifer. 6. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship (combined with Market Steers).

13 13 SHEEP DIVISION BREEDING SHEEP 1. All sheep except fine wool breeding ewes must be sheared on or after January 1 st. 2. Breeding sheep may be any breed, purebred or crossbred. 3. Animals shown in the market class (ewe lambs) are not eligible to show in the breeding classes and animals shown in the breeding classes are not eligible to show in the market classes. 4. All breeding ewe lambs must be weighed prior to showing. 5. All breeding sheep must be removed from the barn by 4:00 P.M. on Saturday. A release must be obtained for breeding animals. 6. All ewes must be County validated. 7. $ maximum premium monies will be paid in this division based on 20 entries that arrive and show. (i.e.: 10 head / $ premium) 1. To be set by superintendent. 2. Grand Champion Breeding Sheep. 3. Reserve Champion Breeding Sheep. 4. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship class (combined with Market Sheep).

14 14 SHEEP DIVISION MARKET LAMBS 1. All lambs must be slick sheared. Everything above the hock and knee can be no longer than 3/8 th of an inch, and absolutely no blocking. 2. Individual exhibitor can exhibit 3 head, but will be allowed to sell only 1 head. 3. Market lambs must weigh a minimum of 80 lbs. A five pound tolerance will be allowed. No tooth rule applies. 4. Market lambs may be any breed, purebred, or crossbred, and may be either wethers or ewes. 5. A breed champion and reserve will be named in each breed in the Market Lamb Show. 6. Exhibitors will show market lambs according to breeds. A minimum of four (4) entries will be necessary to set up breed classes. Classifications will be determined by the predominant characteristics visible upon examination of each lamb. 7. Exhibitors must have ownership of animals and they must be State or County validated. 8. Lambs may be divided into workable classes. 9. Lambs will be weighed on Thursday time TBA. 10. All sheep tags will be checked prior to weighing. 1. Hair 2. Finewool 3. Finewool cross 4. Southdown 5. All medium wool crosses 6. Grand Champion Lamb 7. Reserve Champion Lamb 8. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship (combined with Breeding Sheep)

15 15 SWINE DIVISION BREEDING GILT DIVISION 1. Exhibitors must have ownership of animals and they must be county validated. 2. All breeding animals must be removed from the barn between 1:00 4:00 PM Saturday. 3. They may be any breed, crossbred or purebred. 4. All breeding gilts must be weighed prior to showing. 5. Gilts will be broken down to workable classes by weight. 6. $ maximum premium monies will be added to this division based on 20 entries that arrive and show. (i.e.; 10 head / $ premium) 7. Swine will be weighed on Thursday time to TBA. 8. Gilts shown in the breeding show are not eligible to be shown in the market show. 1. To be set by superintendent. 2. Grand Champion Breeding Swine. 3. Reserve Champion Breeding Swine. 4. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship class (combined with Market Swine).

16 16 SWINE DIVISION MARKET SWINE DIVISION 1. Individual exhibitors are entitled to show three (3) head and sell only 1 head. 2. Exhibitors must have ownership of animals and be State or County validated. 3. Market hogs must not weigh more than 275 lbs. with a 5 lb. tolerance. Hogs weighing less than 225 lbs. will not be eligible for the truck floor (when there is a floor). 4. There must be at least four (4) animals to set up an individual breed class. All purebreds having less than 4 head, combined, will be shown in an OPB class. 5. Only breed champions and reserve champions will be eligible to show for Grand and Reserve Champion market hogs. 6. Hogs will be weighed on Thursday time TBA. 7. No oil on hogs in the show ring-only water. 8. No boars allowed in the Market Swine show. Gilts shown in the market show are not eligible to show in the breeding show. CLASSIFICATION GUIDELINES FOR PUREBREED MARKET HOGS 1. BERKSHIRES The general color of Berkshires shall be black with white points, appearing on nose, feet and tail; any one of these points may be missing or an occasional splash of white may appear on the body. INELIGIBLE A. Any color present on the animal other than white or black. B. Rounded and heavy drooped ears. C. Formation of a belt encompassing part of the 1/3 front of the body. 2. CHESTER WHITES The general color to be all white. INELIGIBLE A. Animal with non white (red, black, sandy, etc.) hair. B. Animal with non white skin pigmentation larger than a silver dollar (one spot or a combination of all spots.) C. Animals that lack breed character (erect ears, etc.).

17 17 3. DUROC The general color to be all red. INELIGIBLE A. White feet or white hair located directly above the feet of the animal, commonly referred to as white socks. B. White spots or white hair located any where on the remainder of the animals body not mentioned in item one. C. Black spots larger than 2 in diameter located any where on the body. D. Excessive dark or black pigment located any where on the body i.e.; larger dark colored patches of skin or obvious shadings of a belt on the front of the animal. 4. HAMPSHIRES The general color is black with a white belt. The white belt starts on a front leg and may partially or totally encircle the body. INELIGIBLE A. Must not have droopy or rounded ears. B. No white streaking in the center of the face. 5. LANDRACE The general color to be all white. INELIGIBLE A. Animal with any natural color hair other than white. B. Animal with more than a total of three spots of skin pigmentation. C. Animal with any spot of skin pigmentation exceeding the size of a U.S. minted quarter currency. D. Animal with upright ears. 6. POLAND CHINA Poland China are traditionally black with six white points (face, feet, and switch of the tail) and possess down ears, splashes of white hair on the body are permitted. INELIGIBLE A. Must not have brown or sandy coloration of any kind on the body. B. Solid black from the ears forward. C. Must not have a combination of a black leg and black hoof. D. Very erect ears. E. A complete belt formation around the front 1/3 of the body reaching over the upper portion of the shoulder. 7. YORKSHIRES The general color to be all white. INELIGIBLE A. Any hair other than white located on any part of the body. B. Any non white pigmentation spot larger than a quarter or total color spots larger than a silver dollar. Also masking around the forehead. C. Lack of breed type and character i.e.; floppy ears, etc.

18 18 8. SPOTTED POLAND CHINA Ears down and of reasonable size, black and white or any combination of, etc. INELIGIBLE A. No red tinted hair or brown sandy spots. B. No solid black head from ears forward. C. No distinct white belt pattern encircling and extending down and on to each shoulder. 9. DARK CROSS Barrows not described above, with black and/or red pigmentation, comprising at least 20% of total body area, shall be considered a Dark Cross. These barrows may be black or red belted, black patched or spotted, with Poland China, Hampshire, Berkshire, or Spot appearance. Barrows with only blue pigmentation are not considered Dark Crosses. 10. LIGHT CROSS Barrows not described above, with only blue pigmentation on a portion of their body. CLASSIFICATION A market hog that is classified out of a purebred class by the official classifier will be placed in the appropriate class. The official classifiers decision is final; there will be no protest allowed and no reversal of decisions will be considered. TO BE SET BY SUPERINTENDENT. 19 19 GOAT DIVISION MEAT GOAT DIVISION 1. There must be at least 4 animals per class. Goats must weigh 50 lbs. to 130 lbs. with a 4 lb. tolerance on either end. Goats will be weighed beginning on Thursday time TBA. 2. Exhibitor must have ownership of animal and be State or County, validated. 3. All animals must be hornless or have horns tipped. 4. Individual exhibitors can exhibit 3 head, but will be allowed to sell only one. 5. Goats must be slick sheared. Everything above the hock and knee must be no longer than 3/8 th of an inch, and there will be absolutely no blocking. 6. Market goats may consist of both wethers and does. 1. Will be broken into classes equally by weight. 2. Grand Champion Meat Goat. 3. Reserve Champion Meat Goat. 4. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship (combined with Dairy and Breeding Goats). BREEDING DIVISION Dairy Does: 1. Exhibitor must have ownership of animal and be County validated. 2. All does must be dehorned. 3. All entries will be admitted by Thursday and will remain until 1:00 P.M Saturday. 4. Entries may be of any breed. 5. Exhibitors shall be limited to 2 entries per class. 6. There will be $500 maximum premium based on 25 entries that arrive and show. (i.e.; 10 head / $200 premium) 7. Date of show is basis for age.

20 20 Classes: 1. Junior Dairy Doe(all baby teeth) Carrying all milk teeth at the time of entering the show ring. 2. Senior Dairy Doe(2 tooth) Showing only the first pair of permanent incisors, or animals which have dropped either or both of the central pair of milk teeth. 3. Aged(4 tooth and over) Showing the second pair or more of permanent incisors. NO MAXIMUM AGE LIMIT. 4. Grand Champion Doe 5. Reserve Champion Doe 6. Jr./Int./Sr. Showmanship (combined with Meat and Breeding Goats). Breeding Does: 1. Exhibitor must have ownership of animal and be County validated. 2.
