1 Issue 13 Multiple District 105 ioness Newsletter Multiple District Lioness Chairman 2017 to Jeannette Morgan As we are heading into September and the start of Autumn I hope you have all had a busy summer and that the weather has not been too much of a hindrance. From the Club reports I have received the Lionesses of Multiple District 105 are certainly working together to make a difference. The number of service hours being carried out is amazing. Thetford Lioness Club completed 126 hours of service in July and that doesn t include all the hours of knitting their Christmas novelties ready for sale. Chelmsford Lioness Club also did over 140 hours of service in July but I am pleased to say they still found plenty of time for socialising with their Pimms and Strawberries evening and when Felixstowe Lioness Club totted up their hours they completed a total of 2795 hours of service in the last Lionistic year an achievement to be proud of. Following the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London, Felixstowe s Energy Co-ordinator is setting up an emergency response committee and has asked the Lionesses to be part of this. Naturally being the caring ladies they are they have agreed though they are not sure what assistance they will be able to offer, other than tea and sympathy. Deal Lionesses have also been busy and President Pearl was particularly pleased when 3 of their members were at a local fundraising event and came across an unsuspecting lady who watched them set-up. As ladies are good at chatting they did just that and Lioness Pearl asked the lady if she could spare an hour to help them? By the end of the day she was attending their next meeting and is hopefully going to be their next new member as Lioness Pearl say s That s the way to get em! Rumour has it that Dursley Lioness Club are having a change as they are swapping their Pudding Night for a Tramps Supper so no doubt we will see lots of photos in the future. Here in Pontefract we have also been very busy as in July we attended the Liquorice Festival with not one but two stalls. The first was in the Valley Gardens where we ran our infamous bottle stall which was busy as usual raising over 200 but the second stall was in the town where the main part of the festival took place. Here we did our Pick-a-Box and never did we imagine it to be so busy. Taking over 700 we worked out that we did a sale every 30 seconds so you can image how tired we were by the end of the day! With only 14 weeks to Christmas we will soon be into the new year and I am pleased to say that some Clubs are already well ahead with their planning. Sleaford Lioness Club are holding their Annual Golf day on 8th June and they are also planning an Elvis Night on 27th October For those who attended Conference last February you will no doubt remember the presentation about Freedom Kits. Before they closed in June, Northallerton Lioness Club made a donation of 200 and we have since contacted all Clubs to see if anyone else would like to make a donation. Treasurer Karen has kindly collected these and sent them to Rosemary and Clubs have now been advised that any future donations should be sent direct to the Trust. Arrangements have been made with Lions MDHQ for a copy of the Lion Magazine to be sent to all Lioness Club President s so if you aren t able to read it on line you can still read it. Unfortunately we don t seem to be able to get much PR for Lionesses in the magazine but at least we get to know what our fellow Lions have been up to. As you are aware my chosen Charity for the year is Tiny Tickers who aim to give a better start for tiny hearts. I don t know if anyone saw it but they have recently featured in the Daily Mirror and they also featured on TV a few weeks ago. The work they do is incredible so please do consider giving them your support as it would be great to be able to present a cheque to them when they come and speak to us at Conference in February As we head into the winter months I am keen to visit as many Clubs as possible before we get too busy with planning the Lioness Conference. So please do let me know if you have a suitable meeting or event for me to attend and I will do my best to fit it into my diary. In the meantime, keep up with all the great work you are doing and keep those reports coming in not only of the fundraising and donations you make but also of the service hours. Lionesses are a great asset to their communities and we all know that. 1

2 Multiple District Lioness Clubs Coordinator s Message Greetings everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the summer season and if you have been away you have enjoyed your holidays and have come back relaxed and refreshed. If you are about to go away I hope you have an enjoyable holiday. Following the MD Convention in May, when MD Chairman Jeannette and I had a meeting with IPCC Lion Heather Jeavons, Lion Tom Berry and PDG Lion David Merchant regarding the New Guidelines. Lion Heather has sent a letter out to all the District Governors for distribution to the sponsoring Lions Clubs to clarify the use of these guidelines. I understood from that meeting that the Lions will be having disscussions and that Lion Heather together with Lion Tom and Lion David will continue to work with MD Chairman Jeannette and myself to see us through this process and help us to reach a satisfactory and amicable conclusion for both the Lioness and Lions. The saying goes if you want something done, ask a busy person, I know all the Lionesses are very busy people but have an amazing capacity to continue to fit more and more into their busy lives. I know from reading your reports that you have all been very busy throughout the summer with lots of successful events and activities and are making a tremendous contribution to your communities. Please keep sending your reports to me they make great reading and also the more I know about what you are doing the more it helps me to be able to promote your clubs and the excellent service you provide. Since the last MD Newsletter I have had the pleasure of taking part in The Norfolk Show working along side other Lionesses on the Lions stand and also taking part in the Lord Mayor s Procession in Norwich. On both occasions I had the honour to carry the Lioness flag in the parades. My diary is already filling up with future meetings and events to attend. I am looking forward to spending time, and sharing more fun and fellowship with you all over the coming months, so if you have any particular events you would like me to attend please let me know as soon as possible so that I can include them in my calendar. Lion Lioness Angela Howard Multiple District Lioness Clubs Coordinator We Are Lionesses! A few months ago Mum (Lioness Ronnie Bootle) and I attended our Lions District Convention and had a very interesting day finding out more about the Lions organisation to which we belong. Throughout the day it became very apparent that there were a few people who were puzzled as to what a Lioness is and why we are not Lions, so as this same question had also arisen at the first Zone meeting I attended I felt I needed to do something about it. When I came home I approached Past MD Chairman Lioness Jeanne Morgan and our current Chairman Lioness Jeannette Morgan to find out all I could about our history, so that I could answer questions from a position of knowledge. Then I decided that perhaps I needed to be more pro-active, so, rather than waiting for Lions to question me I would provide them all with some information as to how and why we are Lionesses. The outcome of this is a two-sided leaflet summarizing the history of the Lioness movement and why we exist, plus a few specifics about our own club. Having being appointed as the 105W Lioness Co-Ordinator I attended my first Cabinet meeting along with our Lioness President Angela Pettit and I gained permission from the new District Governor to distribute the leaflet to the Lions Clubs in our district. We found the meeting to be a real eye opener though it was unfortunate that I discovered too late that 'Any Other Business' has to be pre-arranged and as I had not requested a slot I was unable to address the meeting as a whole! I did however manage to talk to a few Lions after the meeting and hand a few out of the leaflets and I have since gained permission for it to be distributed electronically throughout the district, so hopefully the Lions of 105W will be much better informed as to why Lionesses exist and why we want to continue in the future. The leaflet can easily be adapted for individual Clubs so if you haven t received a copy please do let me know and I will send you an editable version so you can adapt it to suit your needs as it seems to me that in the year that we celebrate our 40th Anniversary and the Lions celebrate their Centenary, we have a golden opportunity to share our story. 3 Almoners Report A brief update from your Multiple District Almoner Jeanne Morgan Lioness JoAnn Williams (Witham) had a short stay in hospital in July and Past MD Chairman Lioness Dorothy Marshall (Thetford) has recently undergone heart surgery at Papworth Hospital. Cards have been sent to both wishing them a speedy recovery from all their Lioness Friends. A message of condolence has also been sent to Past MD Chairman Lioness Pam Kyte (Sleaford) whose mother passed away recently. Sadly I have not received any good news so far so please don t forget whilst we are always here to give some friendly support to our fellow members during sad or difficult times we also like to congratulate people when something good happens whether it be a special birthday, anniversary or anything that they can be congratulated on. Whatever news you have from your members please remember I am only a phone call or away. If you have not received the forms please kareneheywood@gmail.com MD Treasurer Karen Heywood CONFERENCE 2018 ~ NEWSFLASH 2 Conference plans continue to make good progress and the Conference Committee are working hard behind the scenes to bring everything together for another great Conference. The most recent Conference meeting took place on Sunday, 3rd. Current plans are to once again have a relaxed Friday evening, but this time to arrange with the Hotel to be able to have an area where we will all be able to eat together giving everyone the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones, whilst enjoying a lovely meal and participating in a fun quiz for your enjoyment. Saturday will be our AGM where we will conduct the main business of the week-end hearing interesting up dates and news about Lionesses and have discussions and consider ideas for making exicting plans for the future. Following tradition, the day will finish with an entertaining speaker who will get us back into a light hearted party mood ready for our Saturday evening banquet and ball. Sharing lots of fun and fellowship; enjoying a superb meal and dancing the night away to the music of the talented duo The Night Shades. Sunday morning, will see the return of a short less formal business session, giving the opportunity to complete matters of the week-end in an unhurried and relaxed atmosphere, when everyone can then leave the Hotel to depart for home at their own leisure. If you wish to stay for Sunday lunch before departing for home, this will also be an option, but you will need to pre book this separately with the hotel. It is anticipated that Booking Forms and Raffle Tickets will be released in the near future and Conference news updates will continue to be included in the MD Newsletters. The Marriott Hotel are extremely pleased to welcome us back to their hotel in 2018 and are very keen to help us have a great weekend. We have reached our 40 years of service which we have celebrated in style. Let s all be at this Conference to celebrate the start of the next 40 years of service!! Conference 2018 Chairman. 4 As usual, manned the Tea Tent at the Paddock Wood Lions Carnival in July this year besides the usual assortment of stalls. How long does it take to boil a tea urn? 5 hours, to be precise! Unfortunately, the electrics gave up, and several catering stalls, including ourselves, lost power. Although we couldn't offer anyone a cup of tea, it didn't detract from the over-all sales of soft drinks and cakes. As you can see from the photos, we all enjoyed the sunshine! President Nicola Claxton s year of office ended on a high with the presentation of our cheque for 1000 towards the Lions Chemotherapy Pump Appeal, our Zone project for the year. The funds were raised from our Pumps for Pumps sponsored walk, together with the proceeds from our Easter Egg Tombola. Nicola s successful year was rounded off at our Changeover Lunch at the end of June. This took place at the Station Inn, when Nicola handed the Chain of Office to our new President Christine Haines. On 1st July we attended the Lions Centenary Ball at Lynford Hall, where Swaffham Lions, Lionesses and guests celebrated 100 years since the Lions Organization was first founded. President Christine chaired our first meeting of the new Lionistic year in July, and later on we had our first fund-raiser with a tombola and a bric-a-brac stall at the Scouts Summer Fete, the proceeds of which will go to the Scouts to help purchase new tents. have a new hand at the helm. Lioness Jennie Barker has taken over as President and we are looking forward to a busy and eventful year. We are continuing with our theme of food addicts and we all enjoyed a delicious curry meal at the home of our President welcoming her into her new post. We were delighted to welcome Past District Chairman Angela to our first meeting of the year. Angela has supported us over some difficult times and we are very grateful for her input. We are joining forces with the Felixstowe Lions for a fish and chip evening at the Hut on the sea front. We have planned a car boot sale and quiz for later in the year amongst other events in the pipeline. In the meantime we continue with our individual community service and collections, Felixstowe Club membership has unfortunately decreased in the past few weeks. Several of our members have decided to continue with the Lioness Lions Club and belonging to two clubs causes a conflict of loyalties and interests. We wish them well in the future. evening with a tasty selection of puddings on offer at the half way point.. 5 Chelmsford Lionesses Cross the Border!! Passports were in hand when crossed the water to Mersea Island to take part in a fun day organised by Mersea Lions. On our stall we had a children's game, second hand jewellery and some lovely upcycled bags and cushions made by Lioness Lisa. The fun day had vintage cars, fantastic music and great food. We had an amazing day and after expenses made over 100 for our charity. Deal and District Lioness Club took forty local people for a day out and cream tea, tea was provided by Hailsham Lions. On a bright sunny morning in July, the were happy to set up their stall, displaying their lovely homemade cakes; the customers were quick to come along to get their pick of the day! The Lionesses were quick to point out these cakes did not contain calories only tempting flavours to tickle the taste buds, just the thing to go with a nice cup of tea whilst relaxing in the afternoon sunshine. It worked because by mid morning all the cakes were sold out, a good result and everyone left happy. Another day another stall, this time the were out to attract the public to take part in their bottle tombola stall, any number ending in a nought or a five. With prizes in abundance and tickets at the ready the first customer arrived, would they or would they not be lucky; that was the question? The answer yes! The first customer, the first winner! After many spins of the drum, all tickets were sold, many prizes were won and a good job was done! 5

6 Our year ended by having a Social evening at Sync Bar where we enjoyed the fun and fellowship dining and karaoke! Lioness Club London Golders Green Some of the Lioness members attended our Sponsor Club LCLGG Charter Lunch at the Breakspear Arms Gastropub, Ruislip. Presentation of cheque to DG's wife's charity. Another project LP Sandhya is involved in knitting project - knitting blankets for needy Children in Syria and to Homeless in UK. LP Sandhya celebrated her daughter's wedding has been very busy as usual over the past couple of months. From stalls at the Witham Carnival, Maldon Carnival, Mersea Island Lions Club Summer Festival and Purleigh Show we have been out and about collecting money for the various charities that we support. We are just finishing the 50 challenge for Farleigh Hospice, and we also recently gave out the charities cheques including cheques to Citizen s Advice, Canine Partners, Dementia UK/Admiral Nurses, Grenfell Fire via LCIG and MIND. The President s charities totalled 2000 and we have not reached our final figure for Farliegh Hospice but hope it will be not too far below We also had a stall for the British Red Cross and several of us presented the cheque to them in Chelmsford. Not bad for us aging Pink Ladies! We also have a photo of our birthday cake for Sheila, whose 21st birthday just happened to fall on the night of our last meeting. As usual, a good time was had by all. We are very proud of the results of all our hard work. found time to relax, and enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship together. What better way than to have a stroll round the beautiful gardens set in 5 acres of land in a local setting, followed by a lovely cheese and wine supper. Shame about the weather it rained all evening but this did not deter the hostess or the Lionesses who carried on regardless and even a member of the wildlife, a hungry hedgehog turned up to be fed. The hostess made us feel very welcome, the supper was great and the Lionesses had a very enjoyable, merry evening!!
