PONC Spring Draft Test May 31, 2009 Pymatuning State Park Jamestown, PA David Hansen Test Chairman Karen Dunaway Provisional Judge Bethany Karger Test Secretary Lynda Stierle-Dunn Mentor Judge There will be a PONC Fun Day on May 30, Everyone is invited to participate and we will have a cook out that evening. 5 dddf From the CNC President This year began with a jump start, as Kathy Paxton chaired a Newfoundland Health Seminar on Feb 22nd. Many Newf owners heard presentations from Veterinarians of the Airpark Animal Hospital in Westminster, MD, on matters affecting health of Newfoundlands. On March 1 st, Club members participated in a Pancake Breakfast and Newf Walk, arranged by Trish Fornadley. On May 2 nd, Dave Rothschild and Judy Van Dyke, with assistance from other CNC members, operated a booth at the Reston, VA, Pet Fiesta to benefit Newf Rescue, recruit new CNC members, and inform the public about our great breed. The following weekend, May 9 th, Spring Fun Picnic, held for the first time in Southern Virginia, near Williamsburg. Unfortunately, the picnic was not nearly as well attended as in past years, and I apologize for it apparently having not been done to the standards that members and guests have come to expect from CNC. We shall certainly do better in the future. CNC will not be raising its membership dues this year. Unlike many other organizations which are raising their dues to cover increased expenses, CNC has taken measures to reduce its expenses so that you, the member, need not bear an increased cost of belonging to the club that supports the fine Newfoundland breed throughout Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and parts of West Virginia. I do not recall the exact year, but it has now been something like 10 years since CNC has last raised its dues. At last, the wintry blasts are behind us and we can look forward to some enjoyable months of working with our Newfs to prepare them for the August water tests and the December Draft Test. This year, for the first time, our water test in late August will be a three-day event because we have added the Water Rescue Dog Excellent (WRDX) test to the trials. It is a challenging event for both trainer and dog as our fine breed is given an even greater opportunity to excel in what they do best. Again, as we have done in past years, opportunities are provided on alternate weekends for you to conduct training and practice sessions at Lake Codorus, in PA. You can get further details on our website at cncnewfs.com. For those who want to learn more about water rescue tests and the skills required of the dogs, you can volunteer to steward for one or more of the tests, where no prior experience is required and you can gather first-hand knowledge and experience. More information, including people to contact, is on the CNC website. If you are looking for ways to participate with your Newf Club, opportunities abound. In addition to stewarding at water and draft test events, volunteers will be needed for the Newf Water Rescue Demonstrations at Lake Codorus this summer. CNC also needs a representative to the Virginia Federation of Dog Clubs and Breeders, a position which conveys information and cooperation between CNC and the VA Fed on Virginia legislative matters affecting pet owners and dog breeders. Contact me if you might be interested in this. Also needed, and of great importance, are foster homes for Newfs adopted into our Rescue Program. These are temporary homes, where rescued Newfs may be cared for between their rescues and when they are ready for adoption by a permanent home. If you think you may be able to give some of your heart, help and home environment to one of these Newfs from time to time, please contact Dotty Hudson at newfrescue@cox.net or at (757) Jim Wasson Colonial Bear Fare Spring

f In Memoriam Chance Roman JUST A DOG From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's Thank you, Chance, for enriching my life. Love always, Mom Helynn Roman Just a Dog From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "that's a lot of money for "just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog." Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog," gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise." "Just a dog," brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. "Just a dog," brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of "just a dog," I will rise early, take long walks and look forward to the future. I am so happy because "just a dog," became Just My Dog. So, for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog," but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. "Just a dog," brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog," but that which gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human." So the next time you hear the phrase, "just a dog." just smile, because they "just don't understand." -written by Richard A. Biby Colonial Bear Fare Spring

CNC AT THE PET FIESTA IN RESTON, VA Saturday May 2 nd 2009 found us at the Reston Town Center with our dogs for the Reston Pet Fiesta. This event benefits various pet rescue and adoption agencies, as well as featuring a dog walk, and fun contests. Approximately 80 booths featured various groups and vendors selling any pet product imaginable. Despite a brief shower early, it was a great day for us (cloudy and cool). Our booth consistently had a big crowd of people wanting to see and touch our Newfs. Without exaggerating, I m sure well over a thousand pictures were taken of the dogs. We posed our dogs for them and set up the ever popular child sitting in front of massive dog picture. Despite stories of drool and hair, not to mention pictures from a Newfs Gone Bad Calendar decorating our table, we had several dozen people show extreme interest in our breed. I noticed several couples in particular that went from one dog to another asking questions and observing the Newfoundland s gentle disposition. Colonial Bear Fare Spring

With dedicated volunteers answering questions and explaining the history of the Newfoundland, all left with a better understanding of what it means to be a Newfie Parent. Judy Van Dyke did an outstanding job putting together information packets to hand out to those people interested. We even had several Newfie owners stop by that didn t know about CNC. Judy made sure they left with an application form in hand. Colonial Bear Fare Spring

Our volunteers manning the booth were: Bill and Mary Ann Hinko, Judy Van Dyke, Xavier Grahn and Charles Carnagey, Mary Coombe, Thunder, Lokey, Alfie, Charlie, Chester, and me. Additionally, many CNC members stopped by the booth with their dogs and were immediately on the job answering questions and talking about our rescue efforts. Most stayed for several hours to answer questions, and then went on to be roving ambassadors. Xavier and Charles, as well as Chuck and Cookie Basham brought their fosters, Chester and Callahan, sparking even more interest in the breed. Colonial Bear Fare Spring

We did collect some money for Rescue, but after checking out other booths Get a Dog Kiss for a Donation, next year we ll do a Take a Picture with a Newfie for a Donation. I m positive we ll really help Rescue! My thanks to all who helped make this a great event for CNC. --Dave Rothschild Calling all members! 11 -photograph courtesy of Mr. Chiles Lawson 2009 Spring Fun Day, Williamsburg, Virginia This year s Spring Fun Day was held May 9 at New Quarter Park in Williamsburg, Virginia. The event was arranged with fairly short notice, but all attendees seemed to have fun anyway. We had one dozen dogs and nineteen people for the event. Many of the dogs and people who came were people interested in CNC membership or were people who haven t had a chance to get to too many CNC events. People and their dogs started arriving at 10:00AM. Everyone had an excellent time getting to know one another; this writer was especially interested in meeting the new people. Finally, around 11:00 AM, we gathered for a group picture and headed for the boat dock. Many of our dogs had a WONDERFUL time swimming in the brackish water of Queen s Creek. A good time was certainly had by all! We then returned to our pavilion and started the cookout. This part kept me well occupied, since I was the cook. Fortunately, everybody seemed to enjoy the food and the fellowship. Spring Fun Day eventually came to a close at 2:00 PM, as the temperature was approaching the 90s. New Quarter Park would certainly be a nice venue for another CNC event during a cooler time of the year. Despite the heat, all dogs and handlers seemed to enjoy themselves Colonial Bear Fare Spring

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF VINNIE ANNIVERSARIES - The Southeastern Newfoundland Club (SENC) recently celebrated its 30 th Anniversary in conjunction with its Annual Meeting. Being a member of the SENC and having gotten Vinnie from a SENC member, I decided to head with Vinnie to this very important Annual Meeting. The meeting was held in conjunction with a series of judged shows hosted by the Greenville Kennel Club of Greenville, South Carolina. Vinnie and I headed to Greenville on Friday, February 13. Fortunately, we didn t have any experiences indicative of the date. The trip actually went rather smoothly, with no glitches. After a seven hour drive, we arrived at the Red Roof Inn in Greenville. Our room was ready and Vinnie got to meet up with several other dogs, also there for the dog show. The two of us hit the town after a brief nap. Saturday was Valentine s Day and was the second day of this three day show. Vinnie and I headed to the show venue nice and early to see the Newfs in the ring. Newfoundland judging started at 8:00 AM. Vinnie s littermate, Molly, was also in the ring, working on the second leg of her Utility Dog title. Unfortunately, Vinnie did not like the consistency of the floor inside the Greenville Convention Center, so he went back to the car. Daddy ended up watching Newfoundland judging by himself. Unfortunately, none of our usual CNC members were present showing their dogs. The quality of the show Newfs suffered as a result. Saturday evening was the Annual Meeting and the 30 th Anniversary of the SENC. The dinner and meeting were held at Stax Restaurant in Greenville. The food, meeting and camaraderie were much appreciated. There was also a Club birthday cake with VERY colorful icing. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of eating some and offering some to Vinnie. For some odd reason, the frosting made Vinnie and I pass Emerald Green for the next three days! Sunday ended up being a busy day. Vinnie and I had so much fun that we woke up at 10:50 on Sunday, 10 minutes before the checkout deadline. Fortunately, we got an extension. We very rapidly got on the road and headed to Lincolnton, North Carolina. Vinnie s breeder lives in Lincolnton and wanted to see him. I also got Zeus as a re-home from Vinnie s breeder. They wanted Zeus ashes. After our stay in Lincolnton, Vinnie and I headed to Statesville, North Carolina for the night. This was a nice way to break up the drive on the way home and a nice way to see some of our nice friends there at the hotel. Unfortunately, the trip ended too soon; Vinnie and I had to head back to Williamsburg the next day. -Brad Cole Colonial Bear Fare Spring

STORY: Last Friday evening, I arrived home from work, fed Chloe, our 24 Lb Dachshund, just as I normally do. Ten minutes later I walked into the den just in time to see her head inside the pocket of Katie's friend's purse. She had a guilty look on her face so I looked closer and saw a small package of sugarfree gum. It contained Xylitol. I remembered that I had recently read that sugar-free gum can be deadly for dogs so I jumped on line and looked to see if Xylitol was the ingredient. I found the first website below and it was the one. Next, I called our vet. She said to bring her in immediately. Unfortunately, it was still rush hour and it took me almost 1/2 hour to get there. Meanwhile, since this was her first case, our vet found another website to figure out the treatment. She took Chloe and said they would induce her to vomit, give her a charcoal drink to absorb the toxin (even though they don't think it works) then they would start an IV with Dextrose. The Xylitol causes dogs to secrete insulin so their blood sugar drops very quickly. The second thing that happens is liver failure. If that happens, even with aggressive treatment, it can be difficult to save them She told us she would call us. Almost two hours later, the vet called and said that contents of her stomach contained 2-3 gum wrappers and that her blood sugar had dropped from 90 to 59 in 30 minutes. She wanted us to take Chloe to another hospital that has a Critical Care Unit operating around the clock. We picked her up and took her there. They had us call the ASPCA poison control for a case number and for a donation, their doctors would direct Chloe's doctor on treatment. They would continue the IV, monitor her blood every other hour and then in two days test her liver function. She ended up with a central line in her jugular vein since the one in her leg collapsed, just as our regular vet had feared. Chloe spent almost the entire weekend in the critical care hospital. After her blood sugar was stabilized, she came home yesterday. They ran all the tests again before they released her and so far, no sign of liver damage. Had I not seen her head in the purse, she probably would have died and we wouldn't even have known why. Three vets told me this weekend, that they were amazed that I even knew about it since they are first learning about it too. Please tell everyone you know about Xylitol and dogs. It may save another life. Only 3 grams of Xylitol dogsense.org.uk (found in sugar-free chewing gum) is enough to kill a 65lb dog.very QUICKLY!!!!! snopes.com Please pass this warning on to everyone you know that has a dog. It may just save a life. Colonial Bear Fare Spring
