1 Grade 3 ELA Unit Read the paragraph and the directions that follow. In 1868, Margaret Knight was working in a plant that made flat paper bags. These bags were like envelopes and would only lie flat. Knight had an idea. She wanted to make a bag that would stand up so items could be packed inside it. However, these bags cost too much money to make by hand. So she worked on an idea for a new bag. This one would have a bottom and stand up. Then she designed a machine that would assemble the paper bags cheaply. The machine cut, folded, and glued the bag together. The author uses a word that means to put together. Choose the word from the paragraph that is closest to that idea. A packed B assemble C designed D envelopes 2 Read the paragraph and the directions that follow. To see the biggest difference in butterflies and moths, you have to look closely. Butterflies and moths do not have noses. They have two antennae. Butterflies and moths use these to smell. These feelers stick out of the front of their bodies. If you look closely at the antennae on the two insects, you will see differences. Moth antennae are feather-like and pointed at the end. Butterfly antennae have knobs on the end. The author uses a word that means an appendage that insects use to smell. Choose the word from the paragraph that is closest to that idea. A antennae B knobs C noses D feelers

He could see Mrs. Johnson was watching television in her front room. Milo walked across the backyard slowly, being careful not to make any noise. He was about to throw the ball back over the fence when he saw Mrs. Johnson get up out of her chair. He quickly threw the ball over the fence and ran as fast as he could to the other side before she could turn around and notice him. 4 Bringing Books To Life By Rachelle Kreisman How do children s books make the leap to the movies? Lights, camera, action! Charlotte s Web is spinning from the page onto the big screen. It is based on the popular children s book by E. B. White. The story is about the unlikely friendship between a pig and a spider. Many children s movies, from The Wizard of Oz to Stuart Little, were based on books. However, bringing a book to life isn t always easy. "The book is such a classic," Charlotte s Web director Gary Winick told WR News. "We had to make sure that all of the wonderful classic moments were in the film." A classic is a book or another work that stays popular over a long period of time. Although filmmakers stuck to the book s plot, they made some changes for the movie. For example, new characters two crows were added for laughs. "They [are] the comic relief," says Winick. Filmmakers sometimes have to cut long stories to fit a movie time frame. Turning a short tale, such as The Cat in the Hat, into a full-length film can be just as hard. At the same time, moviemakers have to figure out how to stay true to the book. Timeless Tales Children s books continue to inspire filmmakers. That is because many of the stories teach important lessons about life. Referring to Charlotte s Web, Winick says, "To learn what loyalty, trust, and friendship mean is a great thing.".

C For example, new characters--two crows--were added for laughs. D Children s books continue to inspire filmmakers. E Filmmakers sometimes have to cut long stories to fit a movie time frame.
6 Papermaking Papermaking begins in the forest, where trees are marked to be cut down. Once the trees are cut, the biggest branches are removed. The logs, as they are now called, are stacked in huge piles at the edge of the forest. A logging truck takes them to the paper mill. At the mill, the logs go through many steps to be made into paper. After the bark is removed, the wood is chipped, then cooked with chemicals. This turns the wood into a mushy pulp. Next, the pulp is washed, bleached, and drained. Then, it is sprayed onto big screens to dry. The finished sheets of paper are put onto giant rolls. Some of these rolls of paper weigh as much as 50,000 pounds! Finally, the paper is lined, cut, or folded for people to use. 8 Which detail from the passage best supports the idea that the rolls of finished paper are very heavy? A Some of these rolls of paper weigh as much as 50,000 pounds! B Finally, the paper is lined, cut, or folded for people to use. C Then it is sprayed onto big screens to dry. D The finished sheets of paper are put onto giant rolls. 9 Which detail from the passage supports the idea that papermaking is a complicated process? A Once the trees are cut the biggest branches are removed. B Papermaking begins in the forest, where trees are marked to be cut down. C Then, it is sprayed onto big screens to dry. D At the mill, the logs go through many steps to be made into paper.
7 10 Read the sentence and the directions that follow. The logs are too large and heavy to be carried. Which detail from the passage best supports this sentence. A After the bark is removed the wood is chipped, then cooked with chemicals. B A logging truck takes the logs to the papermill. C Next, the pulp is washed, bleached, and drained. D Then, it is sprayed onto big screens to dry.
8 Read the passage and questions that follow. Pandas Panda bears are a very interesting kind of animal. They live in China where they eat bamboo all day long. They have black and white fur. Their closest relatives are called Red Pandas. Very few zoos in the United States have pandas. Most of the pandas in the United States have been gifts from the Chinese government. In their natural habitat, the pandas black and white coloring probably disguises them. Their fur hides them in thick patches of bamboo. Their spotted colors also help pandas blend into the snow-covered mountains where they live. 11 This question has two parts. First, answer Part A. Then, answer Part B. Part A What conclusion can be drawn about pandas? A Pandas make great pets. B Pandas are not common in the United States. C Many zoos have pandas. D Pandas live in warm habitats. 12 Part B Which sentence from the passage best supports your answer in Part A. A Their fur hides them in thick patches of bamboo. B They have black and white fur. C Their spotted colors also help pandas blend into the snow-covered mountains where they live. D Very few zoos in the United States have pandas.
9 Read the passage and answer questions that follow. Comparing Tortoises and Turtles Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a tortoise and a turtle? They both have scales. They have a hard shell covering. Both types of animals also lay eggs. So why do we have different names for these reptiles? Scientists give each reptile a special name because of a few important differences. The most important difference between a tortoise and a turtle is where they live. Tortoises spend a majority of their time on land. They visit bodies of water only to drink or bathe. Tortoises that live in hot and dry areas will dig underground burrows to keep cool. In contrast, turtles live in water most of the time. Sea turtles spend their time swimming in the ocean. The females only come to shore to lay their eggs. Other turtles live in fresh water areas such as lakes and ponds. These turtles swim, but they may also climb onto a rock nearby to bask in the sun. A tortoise and a turtle have different features that help them adapt to where they live. Tortoises have strong and round feet. These help them walk on land and dig burrows. However, turtles usually have webbed feet for swimming. In fact, sea turtles have long feet that look like flippers! They also have a streamlined body made just for swimming. Because a tortoise and a turtle live in different places, they have learned to eat different foods. Tortoises are herbivores. This means they only eat plants. Foods like cactus, shrubs, and other plants with water are what tortoises like to eat. Turtles, on the other hand, are omnivores. This means they eat both meat and plants. Turtles eat insects, plants and fish. Though these reptiles are very similar, you can see that looking closer will help you notice some clear differences. Now, the next time you see one of these reptiles, try to decide if you re seeing a land-dwelling tortoise or a water-dwelling turtle..
10 13 This question has two parts. First, answer Part A. Then, answer Part B. PART A Which of these inferences about tortoises and turtles is supported by the passage? A Tortoises and turtles have many similarities. B They are amazing animals. C Both love swimming in the ocean. D They eat the same type of food. 14 PART B Which sentence from the passage supports you answer in Part A? A Sea turtles spend their time swimming in the ocean. B Turtles eat insects, plants, and fish. C Both types of animals also lay eggs. D Scientists give each reptile a special name. 15 Which detail from the text best supports the idea that tortoises keep cool on hot summer days? A They dig burrows underground. B They swim in nearby lakes. C They hide under rocks. D They crawl under shrubs.
