Pet Tails Wavy ID# On 12/3/15 Wavy TV reporter Joe Fisher was doing a story at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. In route to the TV station in Portsmouth, he and Wavy photojournalist Lance Thomas, heard a noise and couldn t quite determine what or where it was coming from. Upon their arrival to the WAVY TV station, they got out of the SUV to investigate. They opened the hood and heard a loud meow. It appeared the cat was near the engine or the wheel well of the SUV. A dramatic rescue ensued as several Wavy employees gathered outside to witness the kitty s rescue. Lance attempted to rescue the cat from the engine area but the cat then jumped from the SUV and had to be corralled by several onlookers. Lance was able to snatch the cat up and cuddle him in his arms. The entire event lasted about an hour. It was determined the cat was picked up while Joe was reporting a story from the Virginia Beach oceanfront. A WAVY employee that lives in Virginia Beach drove the kitten to VBACAC. The kitten was obviously injured and was assessed by shelter Veterinary Staff. The kitten fondly named, WAVY, sustained burns on her mouth, tongue, nose and paws. She was sent to one of our Fantastic Foster parents to recoup. It took a little while for the WAVY to be able to walk and eat comfortably, but she is recovering nicely. Little Wavy already has an adopter who is also a WAVY TV 10 employee. 2 Pet Grooming Tips Regular grooming not only keeps our pets looking their best, it is also provides health benefits. Below, are some recommendations: Brush your pet s hair frequently, depending on the length of their fur. This will cut down on hairballs and prevent painful matting. As an added bonus, this process can be a bonding experience. Check your pet s eyes and ears on a weekly basis. Their eyes should be nice and clear, and shiny and moist looking. If you see any irritation, redness, or if they appear cloudy, consult your veterinarian. Your pet s ears should be odorless and clear of debris. If you detect an odor, inflammation, or debris, consult your veterinarian. Check your pet s nails regularly. If not maintained, they can grow into your pet s paw pads and cause pain and infection. Brush your pet s teeth frequently. Ideally, this should be done daily, but aim for once or twice a week. Remember to use a pet dental kit and introduce them to the process gradually. Start by massaging their muzzle for a week, then dab their lips with the toothpaste, and then introduce them to the toothbrush. Visit for additional information. Volume 24, Issue 24 Page 2

Mr. Banks - Beagle He is a very independent 3 year old. He is not one to cuddle but if you want a dog that is ready to learn with treats (loves hot dogs) he is your dog. An adult home without kids is best. Fudge Ripple DSH Tabby Fudge Ripple was caught as a feral but her sweet nature quickly shined through. She is a social eater and gaining weight. She likes to be petted and purrs. She has a quiet and gentle side if your are looking for a quiet gal to spend cozy nights come see Fudge Ripple. Noel - Chocolate Lab Noel is a beautiful 7 year old 50 lb sweetheart. She knows the sit command and appears to be house broken. She is a gentle lady that likes to play and is treat motivated. This adorable species of frog is native to South Africa and Namibia. As a mating call, the frog can emit a very high pitched whistle making it look and sound like some kind of squeaky toy. They live in sand dunes vegetated with low, succulent shrubs and other vegetation. They are currently considered vulnerable, with their population experiencing a decline due to extensive diamond mining. The northern redbelly snake is a nonvenomous snake often referred to as a fire snake. It is found from Saskatchewan to Nova Scotia in the north and south to Florida and Texas. Its dorsal coloration varies from brown to black. The underside is coral red to brick red. They average 12 inches in length. The snakes can be found in flowerbeds, gardens, and most woodlands, often under logs and rocks. Their diet is primarily slugs and earthworms. Page 3 Pet Tails

Aegean Cat The Aegean cat originated from the Cycladic Islands in in the Aegean Sea off Greece. It is considered to be the only native Greek variety of cat. They are common as feral cats found amongst the fishing ports begging for food. In Greece, the Aegean cats are considered a national treasure. Because of the way they developed with an affinity to water and fish, Aegean cats are free from most feline genetic diseases. It has been domesticated for many centuries so it has adapted well to humans as a social pet. Aegean cats are active, lively, intelligent and communicative, not hesitating to draw attention. Norwich Terrier The Norwich Terrier originated in the United Kingdom bred to hunt small vermin or rodents. They have a friendly personality so they have become more of a companion dog breed. As one of the smallest terriers they are relatively rare due in part to low numbers in their litters and often require caesarian sections. They are courageous, intelligent, affectionate and thrive in an active lifestyle. They are also quite hungry and will eat almost anything edible. They are good with children if introduced as a puppy. They should not be kept outside as they enjoy companionship. No rodent pets around this dog. Page 4 Pet Tails

Meet the Staff This month we re going to introduce you to Decella Allen, an Administrative Assistant at VBACAC since October Dee is a valued team member with over 30 years of experience in the administrative support field and a certificate in Records Management 101. Decella grew up locally in Norfolk and attended Lake Taylor High School. She has always had a passion for working with animals and feels fortunate to have such a fulfilling career. When asked what she d like the VBACAC community to know about her, she replied I aim to be the change I want to see in this world. Her favorite part of her job with VBACAC is being able to take a 30 second walk to give and receive love from one of the shelter pets. Her most memorable moment working with animals occurred recently when she met a pint-sized terrier/chihuahua mix named Bobbi. It was love at first sight and she was sad to see him go when he found a new home. As fate would have it, Bobbi was returned shortly after for biting and aggressive behavior. He found his loving forever home with Dee and is learning to mind his manners. Meet the Officers Meet ACO B. Roughgarden. Officer Roughgarden is a fairly new Animal Control Officer. He has a bachelor s degree in criminal justice from Western Caroline University. He spent 8 years as an EMT in North Carolina before moving to Virginia. He spent 3 ½ years as a 911 Dispatcher prior to coming to work as an Animal Control Officer, so he was not a complete stranger to some of the types of calls he would be responding to as an ACO. He prides himself as a technology geek and is the first to try new gadgets, as well as assist family and friends with technology issues. Officer Roughgarden is a member of the Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad on Shore Drive. In his cherished off time, he enjoys planting himself out in the sand on the beach during the summer for some quiet down time and relaxation. He also finds opportunity to visit family in North Carolina when he can. He is quoted as saying, he enjoys long romantic walks to the refrigerator at night. So he is also a bit of a jokester. The photo is of a bat we responded to during his training that found a peaceful place to sleep in a stairwell. Officer Roughgarden relocated this animal to a nearby tree crook where it could find a more suitable place to sleep and be left alone until nightfall. Page 5 Pet Tails

the Volunteers Meet volunteer Marian Leger I started volunteering for Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center in 2009 at the urging of my friend Tierney. She is no longer able to volunteer, but thanks to her I have found my niche. I volunteer every Friday evening at PetSmart where I clean cages, scoop poop, play with kittens and introduce our cats to potential adopters. Some people just come by to spend time with them and that's great too. The babies need all the attention they can get. I love talking to people about the pets they have now or have had in the past. I enjoy hearing their stories and seeing their pictures. We bond over a shared love of animals. In the last year, I have started doing cat adoptions. It's so gratifying to see the babies go to their new homes. I also foster for Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center. As an approved foster volunteer, I can quickly remove a cat from the shelter environment when they are not feeling well. This helps keep the other kitties at PetSmart from getting sick. Usually the cats can stay at my house while they recuperate. I also foster mommy kitties with their new litters or orphaned kittens. I am unable to take kittens that require bottle feeding because I work full time. I would also like to foster dogs. I would like to focus on providing hospice care. I want to give them a place to call home for whatever time they have left. Most importantly, I have met the most wonderful people through volunteering. Crazy cat ladies that I'm happy to call my friends, Kelly and Angela oversee the PetSmart volunteers. They make volunteering there a true joy. They are hysterical and so much fun to be around. My only wish is that I could spend all my time volunteering... maybe when I retire. GIVE US A LIKE! Have you liked us on Facebook? Do you follow us on Twitter? One of the easiest ways for us to let potential adopters know about the many adoptable pets at the shelter is by using social media. We post information about adoptables and current events at the shelter. So join the 2050 people already liking us on Facebook and our 601 Twitter followers as we get the word out! Find us at on Twitter and join in the conversations, and while you re at it, invite your friends too. The more who know, the better the animals have at finding FURever homes!
