Cats are being bathed and groomed and owners should have definitely included cat show expenditure as part of their financial budget. It is time to achieve glory and accumulate those elusive COTY Points. Remember that there can only be one Cat of the Day per show- so, if possible, be happy for the winner and congratulate the owner. This hobby of ours should only have beautiful cats, good sportsmen, hardworking officials and people with the ability to congratulate winners and thank those who year after year make sure that there are shows to attend. SACC s International Liaison Officer, Jan van Rooyen, and SACC s Registrar, Johan van Rooyen, will be attending the World Cat Congress AGM and Symposium in Milan, Italy during April. We wish them a safe journey and an enjoyable Symposium- and not too much pizza and pasta! Please be aware that the SACC Office and Registry will be closed from 3 rd April to 17 th April. Johan will be on leave. As previously stated, all matters pertaining to Registrations will be communicated to you directly by the Registrar. Enjoy Show Season and may the best cat win.

2 COTY 2018 Hosted by Eastern Cape Cat Club. This year COTY will take place on July 28 th in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth. The event will be sponsored by Royal Canin- SACC is very grateful for the support and delighted to be working with Audrey Hauptfleisch and her team once again. TURKISH ANGORA BREED PROFILE SACC s Breed Council Secretary, Ingrid de Wet, and the Registrar, Johan van Rooyen have presented a new to SACC Cat Breed, the Turkish Angora, to Governing Council for approval. Approval has been granted and the Turkish Angora will undergo the process to achieve Championship status within SACC. Rita Wiseman is the Show Manager and is well supported by the ECCC Committee and helpers. They are hard at work already. A venue has been secured and approved by Royal Canin. An event theme has been chosen, Logo and colour schemes are being finalized. Non PE workers are already on board and willing to assist ECCC. Judges are being discussed by Rita and her team. All of the above will be revealed at a later date. You can speculate, convince yourself that you know and even relay information to others as much as you want but Please remember that things become official ONLY when the COTY team publish it. Rita is waiting for your , phone call or WhatsApp. (Reproduced from CFA Breed Presentation) The Legend and History of the Turkish Angora (Turkish: Ankara kedisi) According to Wikipedia: Turkish Angoras are one of the ancient, natural breeds of cat, having originated in Ankara region of central Turkey. In the early 20 th Century, Ankara Zoo, began a breeding program to protect and preserve pure white Angora

3 cats. The breed was brought to the USA in 1962 and accepted as a pedigree breed by CFA in Fun Facts: 1. Duchess (voice over by Eva Gabor), the mother of 3 kittens and the main protagonist in the Disney animated movie The Aristocrats, is a Turkish Angora. 2. In Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron, the character Ann Gora s name is a pun on the breed s name. White Turkish Angoras are considered a Turkish National treasure and it is said that The Turkish people believe that one day, one of their great leaders and the father of modern day Turkey, Ataturk, will return in the form of an odd-eyed White Turkish Angora. 4 IMPORTING CATS Please could all Breeders be very careful when considering cat importation from other countries. Make sure the breeder is legitimately registered with an established cat organization. This can be difficult when importing from regions where Clubs do their own registrations but always ask and make sure you visit the mother organization s website to verify that the club does in fact belong to the organization and that the breeder is listed. The notification below was recently sent out to the SACC membership but I have decided to republish it in case some of you missed it. Dear SACC Breeders We hereby take this opportunity to inform you that we have been informed that CatzInc in New Zealand is no longer a member of WCF. We were further informed that the board of WCF had recently been alerted to the existence of several false pedigrees, showing the WCF logo. The following Ukrainian clubs that have used the WCF logo are not WCF clubs:- pedigree. Absence of either will result in an invalid pedigree and will not be accepted by SACC. Please note that SACC reserves the right to verify any pedigree submitted for registration with the respective issuing registration body. SACC further confirms that should the validity of the pedigree not be confirmed, the cat will not be registered. The pedigrees issued by these clubs do not reflect the club registration code or contact details of the club. Please note that to ensure that the pedigree is valid, breeders are urged to contact WCF prior to importing. All WCF member clubs are listed on their website. All pedigrees issued should show the WCF logo and WCF registration number of the club. Contact details of the club should also be clearly indicated on the It is always better to be safe than sorry!

5 SACC WEBSITE The SACC Website is maintained by a professional and independent webmaster. Why? Using an independent person instead of a SACC member eliminates the need to replace a webmaster when the previous one has had enough or leaves the fancy; it also means that the actual webpage remains consistent without the need to change styles with every new webmaster; and also the fear of the possibility of one sided views and/or news is eliminated. Unfortunately the SACC Webmaster has been very ill which has resulted in some items not being updated on the website in January There were no changes to the SACC Registration Fee Structure this year. If there had been, the December enews and the Registrar would have informed you of these changes. It is somewhat amusing that there are those who seek answers from peers on the social network instead of ing or picking up a phone and calling one of the many people from Governing Council for the answer or is it that these modes of communication are considered to be outdated in 2018? Please be advised that the following have been updated on the Website: 1. All Breed Standards regardless of their date are current. 2. SACC Constitution and Show Rules are current for All other Governances, regardless of their date, are current. 3. SACC Registration Forms are current, regardless of their date. 4. Photos have been changed. 5. SACC Registration Fee Structure remains current, regardless of its date. 6. Breeder info, taken from Cattery Renewal Forms, will be updated at the end of March. CAT CLUB NEWS TRANSVAAL CAT SOCIETY (TCS) Article provided by Gail Nel (TCS Delegate to GC) Info on upcoming shows for 2018:- Easter Weekend Goldfields Show Grounds, Bedfordview Saturday 31 March Adults and Neuters Sunday 1 April Kittens and Domestic Companions TCS will be holding the first specialty combined cat and dog show over the Easter Weekend in Gauteng. The cat show will take place in the large benching halls and the dog shows on the surrounding grounds each of course with their separate rings and judges. The theme will be Easter of course and the overall theme colours will reflect the bright blues, yellows and pinks that are so popular over this time. Adults and Neuters will be judged throughout the day on Saturday 31 March, and Kittens and Domestic Companions (Pets) during Sunday 1 April. Overall section winners from Saturday will be required to return to the show on Sunday to compete for the grand titles of Overall Cat of the Day and Overall Pet of the Day. Fun side classes will also be incorporated and the public will be invited to vote for their Friendliest Cat on Show, Prettiest Eyes, Best Pattern, etc. and we are hoping that dog and cat lovers alike will participate in this initiative. Great prizes are up for grabs too! Various stalls selling both cat and dog-related items like cushions, blankets, toys, etc. will be at the Show Grounds, and there will even be an Easter egg hunt for the little ones. Various specialist foods (waffle stand,

6 chip and dip, etc.) will be available, as well as a fully stocked tuck shop. Platinum Show 70 th anniversary Sunday 10 June Randpark Golf Club To celebrate our 70 th anniversary of existence, TCS will be holding a championship show at the Randpark Golf Club on Sunday, 10 June. The theme will be PLATINUM record breaking in that TCS is one of the oldest clubs in South Africa, and we hope record breaking by number of entries! The venue is very upmarket and beautiful as it looks out on the wide expanse of the golf fairways and greens, and has beautiful lighting so that the judges are able to give each and every exhibit the very best advantage. EASTERN CAPE CAT CLUB (ECCC) The ECCC are getting ready for the first show of the season on 24 March- see this enews for results. The May 19 th Show date has been moved to June 9 th to avoid a clash with the Prince Harry/Meghan Markle wedding. Of course then it is the big one in Port Elizabeth on 28 July- COTY! ALL BREEDS CAT CLUB (ABCC) ABCC has had a few hiccups recently but following the recent AGM are firmly back in control with new committee members who are enthusiastically preparing for their first show on April 14 th. They also have cat shows planned for June 30 th and August 4 th. So if you fancy a trip to Cape Town PROVINCIAL CAT SOCIETY (PCS) The show season starts in KZN on April 21 st this is a 6 Ring show- entries are available. The B2B show will be held on the weekend of June 23/24. This consists of 2 4 Ring shows- so 2 Top 12s, in fact 2 of everything. RAND CAT CLUB (RCC) The entry forms are already available for RCC s first show to be held on 5 th May at Oewerpark Entertainment Venue, Pretoria East. Gauteng exhibitors- could mean more points for COTY but only if you attend! The next RCC show will be 18 th August. WESTERN PROVINCE CAT CLUB (WPCC) The Cape s WPCC are hosting 2 shows this year. The first will take place 19 th May and the second on 25 th August. SAASA (The SA Abyssinian & Somali Association) Breed Group show (held under the auspices of WPCC) took place on 17 th March- you will find the results and photos in the From the Provinces section of this enews. CAT FANCIERS CLUB (CFC) CFC are hosting 2 shows this year. The first will take place 26 th May and the second on 11 th August. BRS (Breeders of Rex and Sphynx) Breed Group show (held under the auspices of CFC) took place

So when in Gauteng NORTHERN CAPE & FREE STATE CAT CLUB (NCFS) If you find you are going to be in Kimberley on the 2 nd June, you could enter the NCFS show or just visit. You will be made very welcome. WODAC PET EXPO This huge animal expo takes place on July 20 th /21 st /22 nd in Gauteng and SACC will be hosting shows in the Cat Hall. What would magic be without the influence of JK Rowling? Judges catalogues were fashioned after the Ridder wand/elder Wand the wands used by Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter in the Books and Movies. FROM THE PROVINCES BRS (Breeders of Rex & Sphynx) Breed Group held a truly magical show under the auspices of CFC in Edenvale, Gauteng on 17 th March. Grant Leih and his team have once again presented a Championship show which also had side classes to highlight the different breeds represented by BRS. The show is also a forum for BRS s annual charity drive which always raises much appreciated funds for the chosen beneficiary. The theme this year was Magic. Cage numbers were designed as Dreamcatchers. The judges and Stewards were given gifts of witch s herbs and a Top honours in the Persian/Exotic category went to: La Kitta Jazz Purr (Adult); L Exquisite Incroyable (Neuter); L Exquisite My Fair Lady (Kitten) And in the Mediumhair category to: Wendy Beauty Laguna Leo *RU of Colorkats (Adult); GeeDee s Jasmin (Neuter); Colorkat s Bullet (Kitten) Foreign category best were: Garibaldi s Casanova of Feline Magic (Adult); Kashew s Raven (Neuter); Valinor Vilja (Kitten).

8 The honours in the Siamese/Oriental category went to: Siamlove Seal d with a Kiss (Adult); Westwood s Oreo (Neuter); Sherlah Lorenzo (Kitten) In the Household Pet Category the honours went to: By now the tension is high while everyone waits for the 3 rd level of Best in Show.. The revealing of the best overall Adult; Neuter and Kitten! And the Best Adult and CAT of the DAY is: SAMANTHA Pet Adult and PET of the DAY Best Pet Kitten is ISABELLA WENDY BEAUTY LAGUNA LEO of COLORKATS A Maine Coon import owned by Debbie Le Roux. The Best Neuter title went to: PET of the DAY Prize GEEDEES JASMIN A Norwegian Forest Cat owned and bred by Athylle Caw.

Because BRS represents the Rex and Sphynx Breeds, the Group always honours these breeds by holding side classes which are judged by the officiating Judges at the show. 11 Adri Swart, WPCC Chairperson, wrote the following article for the enews. PET of the DAY The 2018 SACC show season in the Western Cape started with the SA Abyssinian and Somali Association (SAASA) breed group show, under the auspices of Western Province Cat Club at the Richwood Community Hall. This falls very much in a residential area, so the public support is not always that great, but we had a fairly good gate. Hill s Pet Nutrition was the show sponsor and all exhibitors were spoiled with a lovely Hill s branded cooler bag. Tracy Moss and Elna Marran were available throughout the day to provide any information required on the product and assisted with prize giving as well as judging the final Domestic line-up. A total of 81 entries were received, 66 pedigrees and 15 pets. Of the total number, 27 were kittens (only 1 of which was a domestic). The largest represented breed on show was Maine Coon- 18 in total (7 of which were kittens). Slightly more rare for the Cape breeds included a Siberian, Norwegian, Sphynx and Devon Rex. The breed group was well represented by 4 Abyssinians and 8 Somalis. Judges judging the feline beauties were all from the Cape Panel of Judges. All Breeds judges were Kim Cutter, Lynel du Toit, Veronica Knight and Paul Prime. The other judges included Hazel King, Charlotte van der Riet and Ingrid van Eck-Gain. The Domestic judge was a SAASA member, Shirley van der Hoek. The judges were assisted by the Cape Stewards Forum. All scorekeeping was expertly done by Alistair Knight. And the Best in Show results for SAASA Supreme Master POPPET A mediumhair seal pointed and white domestic owned by an ecstatic Irene Sommerfeld. BEST KITTEN AQUILA S CHARLIE CHAPLIN Red Smoke Persian owned by a happy Michelle Matthews.

Special thanks to photographer, Ursula van der Riet for the beautiful images and granting permission to use them. The first Cat Club show was presented by the Eastern Cape Cat Club (ECCC). The friendly city welcomed exhibitors and their cats to the Walmer Town Hall on the 24 th March. LIONHEART SWEET DREAMS A Brown Classic Maine Coon owned by Stephen and Gabrielle Austin and presented by very proud Dad Stephen. Johan Groenewald, Ian Taylor and Rita Wiseman were present to make sure everything ran smoothly and efficiently. All the judges were from Gauteng and all are from the Independent Judges Network Panel of Judges. And in the background are the hard working teamnamely the duo Ian Moore and Alistair Knight.

13 The ECCC works on a nominated and weighted system to find the top 12 cats, regardless of breed, sex or age, which ultimately becomes the Best in Show line-up.
