3 Breaking MEWS from Rainbow Bridge You are all familiar with the allegations my brother Hastings made about me. Well, I m surrounded by heroes! Hastings was on the stand, telling scurrilous lies against me at my trial when in trotted Jimmy, Brandy, Gorbie, Gonzo the Newfie Lifeguard (Marley set him straight!), Harlow Louise, and a bunch of their canine friends, followed by PAWTUS Marley and his stoner buddies from the Nip Fields. They all testified against Hastings! Now Hastings is in detention. He is kept in his cell except for the hours of work release. He is supposed to perform 10,000 hours of Rainbow Bridge community service, but his idea of service is to lay down in a warm, sunny spot to sleep. The guards won t deduct any time served unless he actually works for it. Like THAT is ever gonna happen! So, at last there is a bit of peace and happiness here at the Rainbow Bridge and it looks like Hastings might be in detention forever! --Lily PAWTUS Marley and his stoner buddies have been spotted in the Nip Fields area of the Rainbow Bridge, doing what comes naturally. MEWS? Perhaps not, but just a demonstration that crossing the Rainbow Bridge didn t make our PAWTUS change his stripes. Enjoy, beautiful boy! We hear that the Rainbow Bridge nip is the best ever! 4 Dear Tabby Dear Tabby: My sister Lucy hates me. I try to be a good brother and I am always nice to her, but she just won't let bygones be bygones. When I first came to live here, I had recently had an appointment at the vet where he performed a very delicate procedure. I was still feeling my oats as they say and was in a very manly mood. It is possible that I approached Lucy in a manner that was not exactly brotherly. It was those pesky hormones! How can I get her to forgive and forget? Bleu Dear Bleu: In the feline world we call that a Meow Too moment. Females of all species are delicate creatures and easily traumatized. Only time will heal lots and lots of time. Show your sister that you are truly a changed dog by doing little favors for her. Always let her eat first. When the family goes for car rides, let her ride shotgun. If another dog is bullying her, come to her defense and show her that having a brother can be a good thing. My experience is primarily with cats, but I would say that if you continue this behavior long enough (say 10 or 15 years) you will eventually be forgiven. Tabby Dear Tabby: My sister Lola is a Golden Retriever and should look like a dignified dog. But instead she always allows her ears to flop back and it makes her look silly and clownish. I know I shouldn't care, but as a dog, I can't help but feel that her ridiculous appearance reflects poorly on us all. How can I make her behave with more decorum? Cassie Dear Cassie: Your sister Lola asked me to explain to you that she flops her ears back so that she can better hear everything that goes on in the house. Also, she is what is known as a bird dog and with her ears back she can easily hear birds flying high up in the sky. Thus, she is always ready to hunt down one of the elusive creatures if it flies within range. Tabby P.S. Personally, I find it amusing that you think dogs can ever look or behave with dignity. If you want dignity get a cat! Dear Tabby: I think Tubby Teddy ate my mom this morning! She was preparing a late breakfast for us and Teddy was gnawing at her while she did it. Then we all ate and the rest of us left the room. Teddy was still in there with mom who was doing the dishes. It took her an awfully long time, so I went to check and guess what: she was gone!! It's not a work day so where did she go? Teddy looked exceptionally fat. If Teddy ate her, who's going to feed us? George Dear George: I'm going to go out on a limb here (a place that we cats do not like to be) and guess that Teddy did not eat your mom. First, humans aren't known for suffering in silence. You would have heard something. Second, even Teddy couldn't eat an entire human in one (Cont d on page 5) 4

5 Dear Tabby (Cont d from Page 4) sitting. Last, if you are writing to me, it is a good bet that SOMEONE is still feeding you. My guess is that your mom got tired of listening to a bunch of cats who are constantly complaining about not being fed and went for a walk. Tabby Dear Tabby: Help!! My Auntie Deb has convinced my mom to put me on a diet with Tubby Teddy. Me!! I'm svelte and handsome compared to that tub. How do I convince mom that I do not need to diet and that what I do need is more food. I'm starving. Woe is me! Nicky Dear Nicky: Why is every cat in your household obsessed with food? If it isn't someone complaining about their diet, it's someone else spouting conspiracy theories about kitty cannibalism. You all need to focus your attention on something other than your tummies. Get a hobby. Update your Facebook page. Rewire the house. Hatch a plot to take over the world. Anything!! Tabby Send your questions to Dear Tabby at DearTabby@ourhelpingpaws.com. 7 Wisdom from our Best Friends By Michele Bane, Veterinary Assistant and friend of Helping PAWS Pet Rescue For the second installment of this series, sharing my experiences at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, I'd like to spring right off of installment #1 to elaborate on enrichment. Last month we talked specifically about training, which is a useful tool, and also a specific form of behavioral enrichment. More broadly, enrichment can be defined as stimulation - mental or physical. Any of an animal's senses can be enriched - sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, and any combination thereof! When brainstorming to create a new enrichment experience, I like to think about each of the animal's senses and try to come up with ways to stimulate them all. At Best Friends, there were novel examples of enrichment all around. Here are a few of my favorite examples: Shy dogs were paired with more outgoing ones - this is a form of social enrichment. Cats were all given access to a "catio," or enclosed outdoor space, as well as a plethora of things to climb, hide in, and chase. These are all instances of environmental enrichment. Overweight cats had to "work" for all of their food. Instead of being free-fed, their entire diet was portioned into food puzzles, hidden around their environment, or used as rewards in training sessions. This is a combination of behavioral and environmental enrichment, and also helps those kitties burn calories and lose weight! Anxious and energetic dogs were behaviorally enriched with agility training. Herding dogs were trained to play "treibbal" - a sport in which sheep are replaced with big exercise balls for the dogs to herd. Enrichment is critically important. It promotes physical and mental health, appetite, and social confidence. Animals who have regular stimulation are less likely to exhibit stereotypic behaviors like pacing and obsessively licking. They are also less likely to be aggressive, anxious, or shy. Best Friends finds enrichment to be so important that they even switched from daily deep-cleaning of their cat areas to daily spot-cleans and weekly deep cleans, to make more time and resources available for kitty enrichment. Here at Helping PAWS, we've made the same switch! Our animals are learning behaviors including sitting, walking on a harness, voluntary vet exams, and voluntary nail trims. These behaviors keep them healthier and happier while they are here (by providing stimulation), make them more attractive to adopters, and make their future vet visits much less stressful. We are also providing them with plants to graze on, more out-of-condo time, and even outdoor time in our enclosed dog run when it is dog-free. As always, they have things to scratch, hide in, perch on, and "hunt." The sky is the limit when creating quality enrichment for your pets at home! Think of each of your pet's senses and see if you can come up with something interesting for them to experience with each. Maybe your cat would enjoy access to the view out of a window or a ride around the block to see some new sights? Maybe you could provide toys that make sounds like chirps, squeaks, clicks, or crunches? Perhaps your dog would enjoy smelling something that smells like another species - like chickens or horses? What about taste - can you think of a healthy snack your pet has never tried? We'd love to hear from you about your favorite forms of enrichment at home, and if you have questions about whether an idea is safe, give us a call at ! You can always reach out to us on Facebook, too. 7

13 Custom Greeting Cards in Return for a Donation to HPPR Would you like a customized graphic of your family group (pets, horses, birds, humans, etc) that you could personalize and print to send as your holiday greeting in return for a monetary donation to HPPR? Or would you like greeting cards for other occasions such as birthdays, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, etc? If so: Look at some of the samples on display to give you some ideas of what we can do. Full size graphics and more ideas can be found at Feel free to run other ideas past us to see if your idea is a possibility. This is particularly true if you want a card for an occasion other than Christmas. Send me good high resolution pictures of your pets, humans, etc. They don t necessarily have to be facing the camera, but make sure that I know who is whom. The pictures should be large, but at least should be of high resolution if they are fairly small. If you are in doubt as to whether a picture is large enough or of high enough quality, send it to me for evaluation. Knowing the approximate size of the final printout would help in this determination. If you choose the Dickens carolers design, they SHOULD ideally have their mouths open to look like they are singing. Be sure to tell us the sex of each pet so that we can dress them in appropriate clothing if that is an aspect of the design you have chosen. If you love or hate certain colors, please be sure to let us know. Otherwise, we will use colors that go together well and bring out the features of the pet or human. The background color can be different from the examples. Gradients are nice since they look like the glow from lights, but solid colors would also look nice. Please specify or ask for samples if you prefer a different color gradient. Often we send several images each with a different background so that you can choose which you prefer. The finished graphics will be prepared in jpeg or png format, which you can personalize and print on a color printer, have them printed at your local business supply store (Staples, etc), or you can use VistaPrint. Upon request, we can also send graphics in PSD format with the layers intact. If you use Goodshop, HPPR gets a percentage of your printing costs as an additional donation. That is a win-win for the rescue! Then make your donation at webmaster@ourhelpingpaws.com with your photos or if you have questions. 13
