CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 2 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, CA Mayflower Memorial The Birth of Liberty mosaic is the largest historical mosaic in the United States. It is composed of ten million pieces of Venetian glass and depicts twenty-five scenes from early America, from I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpation. If you have suggestions, please camayflowereditor@gmail.com A monument study committee report is expected to be submitted to the BOA at the June meeting. 3 CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 3 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 Governor s Message I send my best wishes and greetings to each of you, members of the California Society of Mayflower Descendants. As I get older the days seen to pass more quickly than when I was young. Deadlines come more quickly and I wonder where the time has gone. Then there are holidays like Easter Sunday and Thanksgiving where the family comes together and all seems well again. We remember the good things from the past and the bad seems to fade in importance. I hope you are all well and look forward to the future. The California Mayflower Society is growing thanks to the State and local Colony leaders. We are moving forward to keep the Society in a progressive motion so it will be there for our descendants. The California Society has provided four Governor Generals for the General Society of Mayflower Descendants: Dewight Twist, Bob Thomas, Gene Fortine and Judy Swan. The California Society helped many other States to develop into their own State Societies. Many activities are going on behind the scenes by very dedicated and talented volunteers, like the Web Site Committee, the 2020 Committee, and the Junior Membership Secretary, Jane Clayson. I had better stop there because I know I will forget to name the so dedicated workers. I get excited to see each new Quarterly, and I know my Granddaughter, Tory reads and phones me because she is excited also. I hope I can convey the positive energy that so many are giving to the California Society. Thank you all and keep up all the great work. Kenneth Whittemore Governor

CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 4 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 Report of the CA Deputy Governor South The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of California March 22, 2013 I visited the Queen Mary and met with the event manager regarding details for the state meeting June 14 th. We made suggestions to Governor Ken Whittemore and past Governor General Judy Swan for entertainment of guest of honor and wife during the week. Member Sue Butler will be happy to tour them through Mission Juan Capistrano where she is a docent. The registration form was developed and ed to Ken for approval along with members of BOA. Hopefully all colony governors have forwarded it to their members. We will be looking for volunteers to help with registration. The form will be published in next California Mayflower Quarterly. No progress has been made yet on the Golden Empire colony. It will be open for discussion at March 23 rd BOA meeting. There are no active members in that area. This will be discussed further with the Re-Districting committee formed by the state Governor. I am reviewing new state website designs with committee Marcia Maloney Deputy Governor South Women of the Mayflower Initiative The Women of the Mayflower committee was founded by former Gov. General Judith Swan of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, in The objectives of the Women of the Mayflower are to honor the female passengers of the Mayflower by: increasing the gender recognition equity of the contributions of the female passengers; supporting the role of MTDNA research in establishing the documentation of matrilineal lines; providing opportunities to the GSMD membership to learn more about the female passengers through their publication in the Mayflower Quarterly of their stories and what research has revealed, or has not yet revealed; increasing opportunities for partnerships for GSMD with other organizations who are interested in the female passengers; and increasing the number of applications for GSMD membership by opening additional maternal lines beyond the current three (pre-2008).

CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 6 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 Colony News Inland Empire Colony The Inland Empire Colony meeting was held on February 9 at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Redlands. We had 28 members present and the mayflower moment was given by David Grinnell. Our next mayflower moment will be given by Pat Rainier. Our speaker was Doug Westfall, author and publisher, about Amelia Earhart. He is a great knowledgeable speaker and very interesting. Election for officers were conducted. The elected officers are: Doug Westfall Rick Clark Governor, David Grinnell as Treasurer, Nancy Schlachter as membership Secretary, and Shirley Lader as Elder. A report and thanks for Silver Books given to the new library in Rancho Mirage. We will also be looking into a new meeting place during the summer. Our next meeting will be April 13 at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Redlands. Our speaker will be California Mayflower Society Governor Ken Whittemore. Rick Clark, Inland Empire Colony, Governor Los Angeles Colony Our last meeting was an interesting one. Our caterer was great as usual. Many people showed up early to do some genealogy and we actually had a little trouble pulling them away from their computers for the meeting. When we got to our speaker who was supposed to be Skyped in from Plymouth, I got a call from James Baker (our speaker) that Plymouth was without power due to a heavy snow storm. I was prepared for this and I started to show the 2011 Mayflower Congress in High Depth video. I had closed the meeting before so those who had to leave could do so. Much to my amazement almost everybody went back to doing research in the computer room! That being the case I switched videos to a tour I did of the cemeteries on Cape Cod, and some people were captivated by the narration given by Eastham Cemetery Chair Robert Paine Carlson (a Stephen Hopkins Descendent). The graves include some of our Mayflower passengers. In conclusion I can only say be careful about getting between a genealogist and their computer. I did go to the computer room to help out later. The next meeting of the Los Angeles Colony will be held Saturday evening of June 15 th (6:00pm) on the Queen Mary after the close of the State members meeting. The state meeting closes at 3:00 and the freeways will already be locked up no matter where you want to go. On Sunday the Queen Mary features a Champagne brunch that includes breakfast and is suppose to be one of the best in the country.(menu) Reservations are recommended. The Los Angeles Colony meeting will be business coat and tie, and we will be releasing the details in the next two weeks. Everyone is invited to stay over and join us for a pleasurable evening with all our cousins and guests. Hope to see you then! Franklin E. Smith Los Angeles Colony, Governor

CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 7 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 Monterey Bay Colony The Monterey Bay Colony met March 2, 2013 at MPCC Beach House on Pebble Beach for our General Meeting and luncheon. We welcomed to our Colony two new members. They are; Jean Ellen (Hill) Koehl, who was also our speaker for the afternoon, and Sarah Mar Buckley-Moore, who was unable to join us. I reported on LA Colony Governor Franklin Smith s proposal to erect a Mayflower monument in Sacramento and perhaps also in southern California. We will be waiting to hear further details about this project. We also completed and ed our 2012 CA Questionnaire. We were pleased to be able to answer yes to several of the questions again this year. Our next Board meeting is scheduled for April 13 and our next General meeting luncheon will be held June 1 st at MPCC. Connie L. Moore Monterey Bay Colony, Governor Mother Lode Colony The Mother Lode Colony met on March 16 th at Sudwerks-on-the-River. We welcomed a new member Duncan Allen and a prospective one, along with our regulars. Members Karri Samson and Betsy Samson-Andrews shared a festive pink banner celebrating the Mayflower Society, and it hung on the front of our podium throughout the meeting. Governor Kathy Gire conducted the election which resulted in the re-election of all but one of our officers with whom we have lost contact. The officers are: Governor: Kathy Gire Deputy Governor: Elizabeth Ware Secretary: Carolyn Hatling Treasurer: Dave Black Elder: Jeff Record Captain: Cindy Newhall Board of Assistants: Jane Clayson Historian: Karri Samson Our speaker was Ron Jauch, president of the Wheatland, CA Historical Society. Wheatland is a community about 35 miles north of Sacramento and is now the home of Beale Air Force Base and the Camp Far West Recreation Area. Originally known as Johnson s Rancho, it played a big part in early gold discovery before the bonanza was discovered at Sutter s Mill and was a temporary home for the remaining members of the Donner Party after their ordeal of crossing the Sierras. Our May meeting will be on the 18 th at noon at Sudwerks with former colony governor, Janet Levi, as our speaker. Kathy Gire Mother Lode Colony, Governor

We will have a special guest speaker, Judy Swan, immediate past Governor General of the General Society, who will speak on "Women of the Mayflower". We are looking forward to this last meeting until the Fall. Pat Friesen Redwood Empire Colony, Governor San Joaquin Valley Colony The San Joaquin Valley Colony held their winter meeting on February 23, 2013 at the Piccadilly Inn on Shaw in Fresno. 21 people attended. Our speaker, Bill Coate, is known in the area for his creative teaching techniques. Working in the classroom with 5 th, 8 th or 11 th graders, he intrigues the students by visiting pioneer graveyards. They pick a person they are curious about, and he leads them through research, and in many cases descendants of the pioneer meet with the young adults. He makes history come alive. Now, retired, he has written quite a few books, and does talks such as the one he gave to us. His presentation was on interesting facts about our presidents, he asked us to shout out a president s name and then he proceeded to delight us with interesting anecdotes about the president. The Spring meeting will be held May 18. Speaker Bill Hoey will give a talk on Mayflower descendant Dottie Dormandy who was a Bill Coate Women s Airforce Service Pilot during WWII. 11 CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 11 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 State News Secretary Data Processing South Report It is always a pleasure to host the BOA meetings at my home, but I do need more advanced notice. It seems odd that we set the dates years ahead, and not the meeting locations. I will be setting up June Lazich, and others in the future for Skype conferencing, but not at the last minute. This meeting will have Santa Barbara Colony doing a three way conference with us. It is possible to do even more, but it requires a fast host computer (which I have), and testing. A lot of our Skype problems in the past have been because we didn t test as much as I wanted to. Practice makes perfect! Pilgrim Regards Gov Franklin E. Smith Update on State Scholarship Fund It is exciting to tell you that we have eight applicants for the State Scholarships this year. The problem lies in the fact at present time, there is only $2, in the Scholarship Fund which is only enough to cover two $1, scholarships. The scholarship committee is sending out a request to all Mayflower members with the hope that some of us will make that tax deductible donation to help future Mayflower members. The scholarship winners will be announced at the Annual Board of Assistance Meeting on the Queen Mary in June. Governor General Bruce Mc Gunnigle will be in attendance at this meeting. For information on how to support this program, please contact James Blauer at: jblauer@pacbell.net or call Attention all sponsors, junior life members junior members and their families Save July 20 for the first junior member activity. 18 CALIFORNIA MAYFLOWER 18 VOLUME XXXVII, No. 2 GSMD News GBOA Meeting New Orleans, LA September The Louisiana Society is hard at work planning the upcoming meeting in September. In order to ensure that sufficient hotel rooms have been blocked for our members, it would be extremely helpful to know how many members are planning to arrive early and depart later. [We already know that the Executive Committee members will be arriving Wednesday for the Thursday EC meeting.] For example, if you are planning to arrive on Wednesday, Sept. 11 th we need to know now. And/or, if you are planning to stay thru Sunday, to depart on Monday, Sept. 16 th, we need to know now. The other nights are not a problem, from past GBOA meetings we have a good idea how many will be staying Thursday through Saturday. But since this is an extremely busy hotel at this time of the year, they are requesting that we provide them with numbers now in order to hold rooms at the reduced rate for the other two nights, Wednesday and Sunday. Please let me know as soon as possible as we need to give the hotel a number by Wednesday, March 6 th. Thank you! Susan E. Roser Secretary General GSMD Invitation to Saturday Evening Aboard the Queen Mary Hosted by the Los Angeles Colony The Los Angeles Colony is hosting a meeting on the Queen Mary, Saturday evening, June 15, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. after the state meeting has ended. We will have a colorful meeting that will include a bagpiper, a SAR Color Guard, and the Captain of the Queen Mary. This is a very rare opportunity to meet Governor General Bruce Mac Gunnigle for both the luncheon and this dinner. Assistant Governor General Lea Sinclair Filson may join us, but she is a television producer and journalist which might keep her from coming. Los Angeles Colony has invited Orange County Colony, Santa Barbara Colony and all California Mayflower members to attend this special event.
