3 8. Read the following case and answer the questions 10 given of the end: Livelihood security through backyard poultry Mr. N,agaraj from k. Salundi village of Mysore block is 40 year old farmer with middle school education is living with wife and a son. He practices agriculture with 0.5 acre land and started backyard poultry farming about 2 years back. He started backyard poultry farming with Giriraja birds purchased from Bangalore veterinary college. Having two years experience, today he is maintaining 80 young birds aged days and 20 adult birds for egg production. He regularly vaccinates his birds and consult a private local veterinary assistant for minor treatment. He said "I sell on an average 70 young birds (24 days old) every month at the rate of Rs. 14 / bird. He is earning Rs. 900/-per month by selling chicks to middleman and Rs. 400/- by selling eggs. He said " 12 adult birds and 200 eggs were used for home consumption". Mr. Nagaraja said " I plan to start Giriraja back yard poultry farm on large scale, but getting back loan, training on poultry farming are major constraints ". He said that 70 percent of his house hold expenditure is fulfilled by income from back yard poultry farming and income from cattle and buffalo farming has been saved in bank. OLP P.T.O.
4 He proudly said after seeing his success, few other farmers also started backyard poultry as a source of subsidiary income for livelihood security.
