44 ROLE OF WATER REUSE A future increase in conventional renewable water resources is not foreseen. In vulnerable areas non-conventional water resources, such as the use of treated wastewater, arise as an important resource.

45 LEGAL FRAMEWORK Since December of 2007, the use of treated wastewater in Spain is regulated by the Royal Decree RD 1620/2007: Establishes the procedures to get the government licenses required by law. Includes the minimum quality criteria required for the use of reclaimed wastewater for different water uses.

The most important region are the Comunidad Valenciana (148 hm3/year) and Murcia (84 hm3/year). They both account for the 64% of the total water reused.

47 SITUATION OF WATER REUSE Globally reclaimed water is an important resource (368 hm3/year) and sometimes even strategic. Increasing trends towards water reuse. It is estimated that within 4-5 years reclamation capacity might reach 1200 hm3/year. This reclamation capacity is limited by the temporal distribution pattern of the main water demand, the agricultural use.
