A word from the editors. Dear reader, Spring is one reason more for all of us to live our hobby to the max, in a time when the birth of new birds and animals brings us tremendous pleasure and fulfilment. While nature is growing and flourishing, also our digital archives are growing with each new issue. We are happy to see that there is no shortage in manuscripts or interest, thank you all for that and please continue to contribute with everything you want to share with our readers! Please tell us if you want to read about a certain poultry or pigeon breed. Thanks to our international team of contributors, our possibilities are nearly infinite. This could be about new or unknown breeds, or about breeds that are rare or almost forgotten. The latter can be a good support for Specialty Clubs in sharing news and guidelines on their breed with dedicated breeders worldwide. For this type of contacts our digital magazine is ideal; this information cannot be found anywhere else, and sometimes some publicity is just the needed stimulant to regain interest in the breed, or bringing fanciers together. So, a call to all Breed Clubs: seize your opportunity! Enjoy reading our richly filled April issue! All comments are as always welcome at redactie@aviculture-europe.nl Enjoy reading our richly filled April issue! Thanks for your support, on behalf of the team of Aviculture Europe, Nico van Benten

KUMRU PIGEONS By: Harry Hoppentocht These pigeons are also known as Turkish Tumbler pigeon, Kichertauben or Laugher pigeon. At the annual show of the Winschoter Poultry and Rabbit Club in Zuidbroek (NL) in 2013 this rather unknown pigeon breed was shown to the public, several white birds in an aviary. Origin. In their country of origin, Central-Anatolia, Turkey, the name Kumru means "dove". Or maybe little dove, as they are very small, even smaller than the related Arabian Trumpeter. Character. In their homeland they are very popular and known for their temperament. Kumrus have a very calm nature. They will almost never fight, except when an intruder is present in their nest box. It is a lively bird. Breeding. Young Kumru pigeons can be bred together with other pigeon breeds and will mature without problems. Colours. Kumrus come in the colours dominant red, blue and dark varieties plus all other known colours. They have light coloured beaks, like the Arabian Trumpeter. The breed is not recognised in the Netherlands.
Competition. Their courageous and uncompromising temperament is very appealing to the Kumru lovers in Anatolia. They bring a couple to the tea house, put them on a table and immediately the birds begin a sportive game. The pigeons fight by beating their wings against each other. The hens are not automatically inferior to the cocks. The loser lets its wings hang down to show it gives up the fight. No animal is injured. Voice. Both sexes start singing already at young age. The sound differs from the Arabian trumpeter. The sound is brighter and a bit like giggling. That is why they are also called Kichertauben in Germany.(Kirch = giggle). Experience. Anyone who likes to keep free flying pigeons, will enjoy these pigeons. The hawk has to come from a good family to outwit this attentive and quick pigeon. The small Kunmrus can become very tame, but do not lose their temperamental nature. So, if you are looking for a nice courtyard breed that also offers the entertainment of a strange song, the Kumru is a perfect choice. There is not much information to find on the internet, but here you can watch the birds and hear their voice
advertentie Advertisement Feeding and care Kasper Faunafood, expert on food for hobby, social and exotic animals, has a wide range of food for many animal species from various biotopes in every stage of their lives. A young animal needs more protein than an adult animal while an animal that has to perform needs much energy. For animals at rest a maintenance diet should be sufficient provided that they get the necessary nutrients. The specialised nutritionists of Kasper Faunafood are developing the various scientifically composed mixtures, based on specialist literature, knowledge of biologists and last but not least your experience as a (semi) professional user. Especially for hobbyists with a few animals who wish to feed high quality food we can provide feeds in handy 4 kg carrier bags.
LET S ALL HELP! Help insect pollination. Provide solitary bees and other insects with nesting facilities. Even a small insect hotel in your garden will help. The various components or sizes of holes will attract different species. Read here all about insect hotels. Photo: Mick Bassett, Germany.

advertisement Coming soon: the book COCHINS EN COCHINKRIELEN Before the 19th April still serious questions And after the 19th of April the answers! Of all times: Cockerel behaviour The nineteenth century was, because of the behaviour of human cockerels, a rough time. The European powers tried to protect and expand their trade interests in 'the East', Asia. The English fought the first opium war with China, between 1839 and The British were by no means gentle, but the Chinese, regarded as barbarians by Westerners, did at least the same. Incidentally, this game, which took place between 1856 and 1860, was done thinly again in the second opium war, with France as new player, judging by the paintings of that time. For the purpose of increasing the spheres of influence, the 'land grab' of the Chinese went through, the European powers still raving on... Shortly after some peace had returned, Japan suddenly wanted to participate in the "land grab-game" as well. But... what do all these fights of political cockerels have to do with our hobby?
A pious villain He is described as the saintly scoundrel, or the pious villain. With the characteristics of a promiscuous inflatable frog, he made his way everywhere through the Mormon Church (nice, multiple wives). As a doctor, he escaped several allegations of abuse of his female patients, dubious medications, not respecting the truth or often changing it as it suited the person against whom he proclaimed his truth. He was kicked out of the church, but refused to leave and fought the accusations of the crimes he had committed, according to the church. He was known as The villain and his prostitutes (what he called a sexual experiment in a house of tolerance) and never was impressed. The whole Mormon Church community stood up against him and he was even declared dead. His corpse was found in the slums in California. But... what does such a libertine have to do with our hobby? The Greatest Show On Earth In 1856, a show in typical Barnum style was transformed within the shortest time from an ordinary agricultural happening into a huge spectacle, with Polka music specifically composed for the event. Later the world famous circus Barnum & Bailey would arise from these Barnum Shows. But... what does a poster of Barnum & Bailey have to do with our hobby?
THREE OF THE JUICY ANECDOTES Of all times: Cockerelbehaviour After the first Opium War and the signing of the peace treaty of Nanking in 1842, the Chinese were forced to open five ports for American and British ships. Chicken fanatic Queen Victoria of England ordered her ambassador in Beijing to send her Chinese chickens, which happened in In 1852 she received real Shanghais from the USA, the ancestors of our present Cochins and Brahmas. A pious villain Dr. Bennet, the pious villain, actually lived in Plymouth. He was a respected doctor with a medical practice, and a chicken breeder. His alleged poverty made it possible to have the largest tomb in Polk City, Iowa, where he died at age 64 in Dr. Bennet played a major role in the early years of the Cochins and Brahmas in the USA. Character assassination by jealousy and backbiting... for the one who lifts his head above the crowd... The Greatest Show On Earth In 1856, Barnum announced the second Grand National Poultry Show of the year, taking advance of the fever around Chinese chickens. With posters the public was invited to come and see all the foreign and imported poultry, the rarest, the most expensive, the purest breeds before they are sold and spread across our country. On the posters for his show, on the right, two Shanghais/Cochins were depicted. The whole was put up to Barnum's National Poultry Show Polka that he had composed by Brown. Barnum's way of advertising became the basis for today's advertising techniques.
Where are these anecdotes (and more) published? In an international book about Cochins and Pekins that is to be issued on April 19th! 176 pages with the Real (!) History of Cochins and Pekins, with numerous anecdotes, facts and nearly 600 illustrations! Historical pictures, including several that have never been published before, and pictures of birds from Europe and abroad showing the state of the breeds in those times! We can say that, with publishing this unique poultry-monograph, the Dutch Cochin Club has completely reached its goal! Cochins en Cochinkrielen (Cochins and Pekins) This beautiful edition in Dutch language will cost Shipping For info please contact Gerrit Homeijer at gerrithomeijer.1@kpnmail.nl
advertisement Pigeon keeping is a wonderful hobby, which can bring you much joy. It does not matter whether you participate in races (carrier pigeons), or you try through selective mating (on characteristics) to breed the best fancy pigeon, or you just keep a few pigeons for pure fun. Every pigeon fancier is striving for progress, but first you have to have a good pigeon. A top pigeon can only show its qualities if health, nutrition and care and attention are in balance. Over the years we have been able to find out which products are most appreciated by the pigeon fanciers and those products can be found in our range. On our website you will find an overview of our brands. The products, which can be found among the different brands are the so called runners. This does not mean that we exclude other products. If you are looking for a product that you can not find in our assortment, do not hesitate to contact us so we can order that product for you from our supplier. De Groene Luifel has been a family business in Sluis (the Neterlands) for more than 40 years. In our pharmacy department you can buy self-medication and nutritional supplements legally intended for free sale (without prescription).

AYAM KETAWA AT THE CHAMPION SHOW IN THE NETHERLANDS Photos: Dirk de Jong Among the new creations that are shown on the Champion Show in 'Mirror of the Fancy' to the public (and the judges) we saw to our surprise the Ayam Ketawa. According to the accompanying text: The Ayam Ketawa is a chicken breed from Indonesia, South Sulawesi. The NL translation of Ayam means chicken and Ketawa means 'laughter'. The crowing of the cock sounds like human laughter. In the country of origin Laughing Chicken competitions are organized. The rooster that crows the longest laughter in the finest tunes, is the winner. These chickens are very friendly and loyal to their owner. When the cock feels good, he will laugh all day. The hens are good layers. They regularly go broody even in our relatively cold climate. For further information on this breed please contact Adrie Brouwers, phone In August 2011 we wrote a short piece on these laughing roosters. If you want to re-read, click
