January 1, 1979 Guide to the Herpetofauna of Central Minnesota Region 3 - West This preliminary guide has been prepared as a referene to the ourrene and distribution of reptiles and amphibians of Region 3 - West in Central Minnesota. Taonomy and identifiation are based on "A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians" by Roger Conant (Seond Edition 1975). Figure 1 is a map of the region. Counties Inluded: Wadena and Wright. The mudpuppy, entral newt, and red-baked salamander are probably present but have not yet been reorded. The ommon garter snake, smooth green snake and horus frog are represented by two subspeies. Four speies are of speial interest: the Blanding's turtle, whih is unoffiially onsidered threatened by the state, the smooth green snake, red-baked salamander, and entral newt. Any sightings of these speies should be reorded and sent to the nongame supervisor.

-2- County reords for this region are given on the following pages. If you enounter any new ounty reords, the speiman should be aptured and either photographed from several angles or preserved in isopropyl alohol. The best identifiation reord for frogs and toads is a reording of the all. Reord the olletor's name and address, date, ounty, township, range, setion number (or distane and diretion from the nearest town), and the habitat in whih the animal was found. The nongame supervisor should be ontated onerning disposition of speimens. Unless otherwise speified, all ounty reords on the following pages are derived from Reptiles and Amphibians of Minnesota by Walter J. Brekenridge.
