See inside for a listing of the lots and scans of some of them. FROM THE PRESIDENT by: Lisa Janz While summer time gets to be a busy time for most, the turn-out at the meetings has been great. We have a fantastic group of people who make the Salem Stamp Society fun. If you are a member who hasn t made a meeting in a long time, I invite you to come back and get reacquainted. Changes in ebay s rules and processes for stamps and coins is a buyers beware warning. Linn s Stamp News reported in the July th 20 issue that ebay has eliminated the stamp and coin review program. If you are a regular ebay user, you will need to be more aware and make sure you do your due diligence before bidding on an item. Ask around to other members regarding which ebay dealers they trust and keep a close eye out for problems. Remember, if it seems to good to be true, it is. If you get Linn s Stamp News, make sure that you read the article. It s on the front page. Have a wonderful summer and see you at the meeting. A cinderella is a label that looks like it could be a postage stamp, but it isn t. One of the purposes of cinderella stamps is for fund-raising. The Alaska Arctic Air Mercy Flight stamps have been represented to have been issued to help fund the cost of an emergency flight of diphtheria serum from Nenana to Nome, Alaska where there was a diphtheria epidemic in January of 1925. By that time of year, ships could not get to Nome due to ice. Nome is just four degrees south of the Arctic Circle. In 1925, 455 Alaskan natives and 975 settlers lived there. Nome had only one doctor, Curtis Welch, and four nurses in the 25 bed Maynard Columbus Hospital. The only diphtheria antitoxin on hand was past its date of expiration. When the doctor tried using it, the patient died. On January 22, 1925, Dr. Welch sent a radio telegram by the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System to all major towns in Alaska and to the territorial governor of Alaska giving notice of the epidemic. He also sent a radio-telegram to the U. S. Public Health Service in Washington, D.C. as follows: An epidemic of diphtheria is almost inevitable here STOP I am in urgent need of one million units of diphtheria antitoxin STOP Mail is only form of transportation STOP I have made application to
