Aussies Check out New Zealand Budgies 2015 Monday 27 th July early morning rise to be at Brisbane Airport for 5.15 am to be ready for flight to NZ on Emirates A380 What a magnificent aircraft the video from the cameras mounted on the nose and tail showed great pictures of the take-off and landing especially over Brisbane and coming into Auckland. Two & a quarter hours to Auckland quicker than going to Perth Two hours later through Customs, baggage collection, car pickup and an NZ mobile phone we were off to Hamilton. Tuesday 28 th we met up with Barry and Di McClennan and Jean Spencer at their Motel and learnt that Hilary Berger was in Hospital so they would not be joining us for the aviary visits. Geoff Callister met us here and directed us to their home and aviary where Jill had prepared an enormous morning tea (enough for half of Brisbane). After smoko into Geoff s aviary, not a very large building but quite adequate as Geoff only flies around 40 to 50 birds. The aviary is insulated against the cold winds that blow in the area in winter. The birds have access to an outside suspended flight complete with eucalyptus bark and branches to play on. Geoff has some amazing budgies especially the hens, the wing markings are very good no opalescence or smudging. Geoff grows fennel in a glass house and says the birds relish it as a treat. Geoff & Terry (we will get him shortly) use a different nest box than we are used to. The box goes inside the breeding cabinet with access for the birds though a hole in the top of the box and an inspection flap is towards the front and on the top. Some birds in the Callister Avairy. Next stop was to Terry & Linda Patten for another jaw dropping aviary visit and a humongous lunch and countless bottles of wine. Keith and Carol joined us here having just travelled from the Bay Of Islands. The Pattens:- Terry has had heaps of experience breeding birds and Linda is an NZ National Judge and judged the ABNC National in Adelaide in 2014. Aviary slightly larger than Geoff s with around 50 to 60 birds. The birds again some magnificent hens with some lovely cocks mostly Normals and Cinnamons. With all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a 65-year-old friend of mine was able to give birth... When she was discharged from the Hospital and went home, I went to visit. 'May I see the new baby?' I asked not yet,' she said, 'I'll make coffee and we can chat for a while first.' Thirty minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?' 'No, not yet,' she said. After another few minutes had elapsed, I asked again, 'May I see the baby now?' 'No, not yet,' replied my friend. Growing very impatient, I asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?' 'WHEN HE CRIES!' She told me. 'WHEN HE CRIES?' I demanded. 'Why do I have to wait until he CRIES?' 'BECAUSE I FORGOT WHERE I PUT HIM, O.K.?!!' Budgieee?????? An Irishman on diet An Irishman was terribly overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet. I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, then eat regularly again for 2 days then skip a day... And repeat this procedure for 2 weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least 5 pounds. When the Irishman returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly 60 lbs! That's amazing! the doctor said, Did you follow my instructions? The Irishman nodded... I'll tell you though, by all the saints, I taught I were going to drop dead on that third day. You mean from the hunger? asked the doctor. No, from the bloody skipping!
Off to the Show Some of the birds that caught our attention Carol Hughes & Ian Silk, Best Hen of Show Presentation of Champion Trophy Terry Patten (on the left) Grant Finlay (Scotland) Linda Patten, president Mike NZ Budgerigar Society The NZ show was a combined show with Canaries, Finches, Parrots, Cockatiels, Love Birds, and Budgerigars on display. Approximately 300 budgies benched in Open and Novice Sections They have fewer classes than we do as they have not found any Dilutes, Blackeyes or Crests The NZ breeders have kept the English bloodlines pure, by not ixing them with their original stock as was done here in Aust. The show was run by the Auckland Metro Bird Club. Birds were benched on Thursday afternoon. Judging was on Friday (closed door) simular to English shows. The birds were judged by Grant Finlay from Scotland and Gerd Bleicher from Germany. We were able to view the birds after 3 pm on Friday. The Friday night Meet & Greet was very simular to any of our Nationals here except there was tons of food plenty for all. Saturday Presentation Dinner was a semi formal affair again heaps of good food ( the pav was not up to the Aussie standard, no passionfruit or kiwi fruit) We thanked the Kiwi fanciers for the way they made us so welcome. N.Z. Dave... Dave Ingoe s Aviary in Gisborne New Zealand. The birds are allowed access very early in the morning and locked inside at night as owls are a problem Dave Ingoe has an aviary on his citrus and apple orchid situated on the outskirts of Gisborne North Island New Zealand. The aviary consists of three flights with access to outside suspended flights flying around two hundred birds. Dave had budgies for about six years when he was much younger until he found the birds with skirts were more fun. He has been back into the fancy since 1988. Dave has been a judge for about twelve years and has judged in Australia five or six times as well as stewarding at shows in Britain. A view of the inside flights. Dave Ingoe with some of his birds Note the wire hooks hanging on the perches they have dog biscuits, cuttlebones and mineral blocks threaded on them. We asked Dave what is his favourite variety, the answer Normal Light Green Pairing:- Dave chooses the best of his hens visually, then checks their pedigrees. He then selects the cocks by the same method and as long as they complement each other visually and by pedigree they are paired together. Feeding:- mixture of millets, red, white, jap and panicum in one dish and plain canary in another dish. Dave believes that if all are mixed together the birds wast seed by scratching for a particular seed. No soaked food is given but he gives soft food mix that is mainly dry. It consists of whole or horse oats, rolled oats and lorikeet dry mix all mixed together. Then in a food processor carrot, broccoli, meat chicken starter are just broken up, then is combined with the oat mix along with a pigeon vitamin oil. This is fed to all
the birds in the aviary. Occasionally, as a treat Dave feeds sweet corn on the cob or some silver beet. AS another treat Dave gives his birds millet sprays usually at night. TELSTRA needed to hire a team of telephone pole installers for the Stuart Highway, and McMurray and the boss had to choose between a team of two guys from Port Pirie and a team of two Irish guys. So the boss met both teams and said "Here's what we'll do. Each team will be installing poles out on the new road for a day. The team that installs the most poles gets the job." Both teams headed right out. At end of the shift, Bud and Buddy, the two Port Pirie guy s came back and the boss asked them how many they had installed. They said that it was tough going, but they'd put in twelve. Forty-five minutes later, Paddy and Mick, the Irish guys came back in and they were totally exhausted. The boss asked, "Well, how many poles did you guys install?" Mick, the team leader, wiped his brow and sighed, "Paddy and me, we got three in. ``"The boss gasped, "Three? Those two Port Pirie guys put in twelve!" "Yeah," said Mick, "but you should see how much they left sticking out of the ground! When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised "Mine says I'm 4 to 6."

Breeding for the Percentages By Alistair Home A few years ago I wrote about the chances of the ordinary breeder who could not afford to buy the imported birds in numbers. At that time there were a lot of people saying that the high prices would drive fanciers away. They pointed to the low entries in shows and predicted that it would get worse. I argued that the opposite was the case and that the import of birds was going to create a level playing field because before very long we would all have access to the birds we needed. What would really count, I said, was the skill of the breeder combined with that bit of luck that is always needed. Once everyone started to breed birds of a better quality 1 felt sure that entries in shows would start to climb. I want to quickly describe again the breeding plan that I think an ordinary breeder can follow to give themselves a chance to compete with the high fliers. I then want to go on to say something about how the percentages can be used to speed things up. My idea is that the way forward is to attempt to improve your entire stock so that there is a steady increase in quality year by year across the whole flock. The lucky ones are able to buy numbers of breeding pairs so that their starting level is higher, but most of the rest of us can only afford one pair or maybe even only one or two unmatched birds of superior quality and we have to use those birds to lift our general level. Starting out - establishing the flock The first step is to breed as many young as possible from your new stock, mating them with the best quality partners you have available. A quality pair should be bred together and the second year should be the year for breeding numbers across your stock. The only birds to be sold off at this stage are the outright failures. Most of the young should be kept even if they are not as good as the original quality purchases. The next stage is to breed related birds together - half brother to half sister, cousin to cousin, uncle to niece, and aunt to nephew. From the offspring of these matings you should be very selective, keeping only those young which show a significant improvement on their parents. These birds form your breeding stock for the future. Each year from now on your aim should be to sustain a forward-moving breeding program by selecting the best young birds to join your breeding team for the following year.
Upgrading Each year you should analyse the weaknesses in your stock. You may decide to purchase birds carrying specific features that you need if there is no bird in your stock carrying what you want. There is little point in simply buying a "good" bird - it must introduce desired features based on careful examination of your birds. The purchase becomes an outcross, mated to several of your best birds. Meantime you continue to select the best from among your mainline to continue your general breeding program. The next year the young from the outcross matings are bred together and the best young from these matings are then bred across your stock. This process goes on continually - bringing the whole flock forward and introducing an outcross perhaps every second year. Percentages using your lucky break How can the percentages help? In general across the broad range of matings I think you can hope to produce a small percentage of birds which are an improvement over their parents - maybe about 10%. Probably about 40% of the young will be of similar quality to their parents, carrying a range of features; some better, some no better, some worse. About 40% will be a bit poorer, but still showing some good features and about 10% will be far worse than their parents. Every year the superior 10% will win places in your breeding team, you will select from among the next 40% to try to maintain a balance across your stock as you replace old stock with young and you will dispose of the balance of the birds. This is a very slow, painstaking process. It means that even if you breed from thirty or more pairs you can only expect about 15 or 20 young which show a significant improvement. A poor breeding season and a slice of bad luck can mean that not even that number of better birds may make it onto the perch. On the other hand sometimes you can have a slice of good luck; occasionally a pair will click and produce a whole group of chicks that are better than your average level. Sometimes a new outcross clicks in this way; sometimes it can be a pair from your mainline which seem particularly compatible. As soon as you identify a superior nest of chicks you should take steps to increase the numbers from that pair. You will probably notice the quality only a few days before the hen begins to lay her second round. As she begins to lay you should transfer her eggs to foster pairs even if they are quite good pairs in their own right. I would aim to transfer the first three eggs to one pair, the next three to another and then I would let the hen continue to lay and go on to rear the resultant clutch. With reasonable good fortune you might get ten chicks on the second round. I let the hen rear her next clutch so that I have a chance of taking a third round of eggs. This large number of chicks of a higher average level becomes the basis of the general breeding program for the future. If the average level has been high there is a chance that there will be one or two outstanding chicks and the only ones I would let go would be the one or two at the tail of the clutch. When such a breeding result occurs you will make much more than the general 10% improvement for that year and your whole stock will move up to a new level. The bad news is that big jumps forward do not occur all that often, and the usual thing is that we creep along slowly year by year. If the chance comes your way, grab it with both hands!
