REGGIE is no longer a SHADOW REGGIE by Sonia Jung-Ansari Page 4 Our family wanted to help out by fostering a cat so I reached out to the Mississauga Humane Society in November of 2015. At the time they had 8 to 9 shadow (feral) cats that all needed socialization before they could be adopted out. I was asked to take REGGIE a 3 year old female DSH who was there the longest. Having never socialized a shadow cat before, I had no idea how long it would take or what it would require, although I was given advice and tips. I knew it would take time and patience. REGGIE was extremely fearful when we got her. But she was also very timid and scared of every noise or quick movement. Anytime I tried to reach out to try and pet her, she would hiss and slowly move her paw up as if to warn me that she wasn't having any part of it. Yes there were a few swats and bites but after a few days, she started tolerating short bouts of me petting her head. Each month would pass we made a little more progress and sometimes, she regressed. Page 5 z HURRICANE HARVEY SURVIVOR DOGS Oct 16, 2017 was a big day for 11 dogs as they came to Canada and were ready to start a new chapter in life. They are some of the many survivor dogs from HURRICCAN HARVEY (HH) in Houston, Texas. A lot of these dogs ended up in shelters, unclaimed and homeless. Due to lack of spaces, many were scheduled to be put down. MISSISSAUGA HUMANE SOCIETY worked with REDEMPTION PAWS, a rescue group in Toronto in the rescue of these dogs in order to find them adoptive homes here in Canada. After many hours of transportation all the way from Houston, these precious souls arrived Mississauga at 6:30 AM on Oct 16. Thanks to the voluntary drivers from REDEMPTION PAWS and our drivers Marlene, Labog, and Deitmar, her dad, who brought the dogs from Buffalo to Mississauga in 2 vans. We were supposed to take 14 dogs but 3 did not come. Marlene was very kind enough to let us use her garage as the "pick up" location for these dogs. Upon arrival, they were fed and given water, and put on proper collars, harnesses and leashes to get ready to go to the foster homes arranged for them beforehand. Of course they were all given "walkies!" The first pick up started at 8:30 am and Sharen the foster mom brought her family (husband and daughter) to welcome the dogs! ROSE and MANDY were the first two dogs that went to a foster home together. The other dogs were picked up by their foster parents throughout the day. Three foster homes took in 2 dogs together. Koda, a husky with a big lump on her shoulder, was the last one to leave with his foster mommy! By the end of the day, ALL DOGS HAD A FOSTER HOME TO GO TO! A BIG THANK YOU to MARLENE. And of course to all the FOSTER PARENTS (Andrea, Barbara, Barbara, Sharen, Lily, Giovanna, Lisa, Jeanette, and Rod) who opened their HOMES and HEARTS to these precious souls. Thanks also to REDEMPTION PAWS who helped to organise this rescue. Despite their ordeal, all these dogs are very sweet and friendly. As of Nov 25, 7 of the dogs have already been adopted, and some by their foster parents. Pictures can be seen on Page 6. TOGETHER, WE HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES

Page 9 PET FEST & WALKATHON 2017 Our annual PET FEST & WALKATHON took place on September 23 at the Erindale Park. It was hot but sunny! Thanks to everyone who came and supported the event. Thanks to ELECTROLUX, our sponsor for the sponsorship of $7,500é Thanks to Jan Clare, our long term supporter and a persistent lady who asked everyone she met for pledge money to help the homeless animals. She is again the "TOP PLEDGER" and received the prize of a microwave (donated by Electrolux who also donated gifts for Silent Auction). Jan raised over $3,000! Yes, she's the lady with the 4 dogs! Page 12 ESTHER THE WONDER PIG Changing Lives of Humans & Animals Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter moved to the country, became vegans, and started an Animal Refuge Sanctuary all because of a PIG! In 2012 Jenkins and Walter adopted a baby pig named ESTHER, thinking she was a "micro-pig" and would stay that size, but Esther had other plans, growing to be 300kg (or 650 pounds). They ve learned a lot on their journey with Esther. Esther is now a house pet who now spends her days lounging around the house, along with two cats, two dogs and four rabbits. The latest addition is a turkey called CORNELIUS. Esther has her own single bed, a jar of Scotch mints all to herself, bumper stickers, a full-colour calendar, and best of all, the love of two daddies under one roof. Her photos and stories spread like wildfire on the Internet. THANK YOU to our SPONSORS Esther is incredibly smart. She loves to be cuddled and scratched. She s very affectionate, she has been completely house trained, does a few tricks for her treats. The list is endless. She has a personality like no animal we ve had the pleasure of knowing. We want people to know that Esther is what you re eating. The personality you see. Her smile, her intelligence, her playfulness and her want for affection are no different than the millions of pigs we allow to be treated like a product in factory farms. She comes when she called. We want to put a face on the pork products we love so much. GIVEN THE CHANCE, EVERY ONE OF THOSE PIGS WOULD BE JUST LIKE ESTHER. To inspire kindness and compassion for farmed animals everywhere. Steve and Derek founded the HAPPILY EVER ESTHER FARM SANCTUARY in 2014; it is located in Campbellville, Ontario Canada. Since its inception, the Sanctuary has been dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected and abandoned farmed animals. HUMOUR TIME WHAT TIME IS IT? MEHUMOUR TIME An American tourist walks out of a Mexican ME train station when he notices he isn't wearing his watch. A Mexican man is resting with a donkey under a nearby tree. The American approaches the Mexican and asks, "Excuse me, do you know what time is?" The Mexican looks at the donkey, lifts its right leg, and replies, "4:30." The American asks surprisingly: "How do you know that? The Mexican replies, "Well, you lift up the leg so that you can see that clock across the street! THANK YOU To all of those who contributed articles to this issue. A big vote of thanks to all of our volunteers, foster parents & donors.
