Competences: Linguistic communication Learning to learn 1. Read the text. Strange Dog Breeds Have you got a dog? What does it look like? Is it big or small? Has it got long hair or short hair? There are many different types, or breeds, of dogs in the world and some of them are quite strange. These are three of our favourites: The Hungarian Puli is famous for its funny long hair. Pulis don t mind the rain, because their amazing hair is resistant to water. Historically from Asia, the Hungarian Puli is over 1,000 years old. But people believe other types of Pulis are over 6,000 years old. Pulis are clever and athletic dogs, and they love playing. The Xoloitzcuintli (show-low-eats-queent-lee), or Xolo, is a Mexican dog and it s over 3,000 years old. The Xolo is also called the Mexican Hairless Dog and it s easy to see why most Xolos haven t got any hair! Like humans, the sun is bad for them. Adult Xolos are clever and calm. They re great pets. This strange animal looks like a baby sheep, but it s a dog! Named after the Town of Bedlington in England, this terrier hasn t got a very long history. It's about 230 years old. Bedlington Terriers have got short curly hair. They re friendly and clever, and they love people. 2. Complete the chart. 3. Answer the questions. 1. Competences: Linguistic communication Cultural awareness and expression 1. Read the text. About two thousand years ago, the Romans arrived in Britain. It wasn t a short visit. In fact, they stayed for nearly four hundred years. When they finally left, Britain was a very different place. The Romans changed many things related to everyday life in Britain. We can still see a large number of these changes today. For example: Towns: The Romans built many towns in Britain, and there are still towns in most of the same places today. Roman towns were very organised, with a town centre and houses in straight lines. Modern cities, like London and Canterbury, grew from these Roman beginnings. Roads: The Romans probably built about 16,000 kilometres of roads in Britain. It was important for soldiers to move quickly from one part of the country to another, so the roads were usually long straight lines. Many British roads today still follow the same straight lines. Architecture: There aren t many examples of complete Roman buildings in Britain today, but more modern buildings often have Roman influences such as pillars and arches. For example, the Royal Exchange a shopping centre in the City of London is from the 19th century but looks like a Roman temple. Language: The Romans spoke Latin the parent language of French, Spanish, Catalan, Italian and other languages. English doesn t come from Latin, but many English words do. For example, actor, animal, stadium, picture and also language! 2. Tick the sentences true (T) or false (F). Then correct the false sentences. T F 1.
