About the charities: The Variety Club of Jersey - www.varietyjersey.org.je/content/what-we-do All over the Island of Jersey there are children who have to cope with sickness, disability or disadvantage. It s tough. Really tough. We provide practical, tangible help that makes an immediate difference to those children and their families. As well as providing help for children in the form of vouchers for food, nappies, shoes, uniform and baby equipment, Variety also help towards school trips and specialized equipment. For example, a wheelchair doesn t just provide mobility, it lets the child join in with others.
About the charities: Guide Dogs for the Blind Association The guide dog movement began in England following a meeting in London on 23 September 1930 between three ladies. One, Mrs Dorothy Eustis, had begun training dogs as guides for Blind and partially sighted people in Switzerland after a German doctor working with war wounded discovered that his pet dog, an Alsatian, had continued a walk with a blind person, after the doctor had been called away temporally. A training centre was set up in Wallasey and the first guide dog was trained in 1931. Now, over 5,000 Guide Dogs are at work in Great Britain taking their blind and partially sighted owners to work and mobile undertaking all the other tasks in life. Here, in Jersey, we currently have five Guide Dogs helping their owners lead a normal life, able to go out whenever they wish and additionally providing companionship. Additionally there is one puppy being puppy walked (until it is fully grown and ready for training as a guide dog) with another expected later this year. The cost of breeding, rearing, training and maintaining a guide dog throughout its life is 51,300. This includes providing the familiar yellow harness and coat, food, bedding and veterinary bills. The Jersey Branch was established in 1938 and its purpose is to raise funds for the training of guide dogs. This is done in a number of ways but the most successful are the annual book sales. Additionally many organisations including schools, churches, clubs and the professional undertakings of banks and lawyers help to raise funds by sponsorship and organising events with staff, customers and clients.
About the charities: Autism Jersey - www.autismjersey.org Autism is a different way of way of thinking and sensing the world around us. Some people, including those who have autism, can be very good at doing different things or knowing about different things that interest them. For some people with autism, being especially good at something has made them famous. Having autism also means that some people might find it difficult to make friends, but that doesn t mean they don t want friends. It means that we have to be kind, patient and understanding. People with autism see, hear and feel the world differently. They often find the world around them overwhelming. This means that taking part in everyday life at home and at school can be more challenging. Autism Jersey is a charity which helps children with autism (we help adults too!).
