Whether they re being surrendered by their owners, rescued from the streets or worse, rescued from busive situtions, the moment ech niml enters the doors of the shelter, the heling process begins. Whether soothing nerves or treting injuries, the stff nd volunteers of the Burbnk Animl Shelter re dedicted to creting n environment in which nimls feel sfe nd loved, so tht the scrs of their pst nd the trum of being bndoned cn begin to fde to revel the mzing, doptble pets tht they truly re. Animls coming into the shelter sick or injured re especilly chllenging becuse they need both emotionl nd physicl cre. The veterinry stff, led by Dr. Greer nd Dr. Howe, long with Vet Tech Jenette Dese nd group of dedicted volunteers, works hrd to restore the helth nd wellness of ech niml t the shelter. A long stnding difficulty for the vet stff hs been the lck of n X-ry mchine on site t the shelter. With no X-ry on the premises, the shelter is forced to trnsport nimls to locl veterinrins for X-rys, cusing delys in tretment nd dditionl physicl nd emotionl strin tht could worsen the niml s condition. Aside from the obvious broken bones, the X-ry is criticl in dignosing bdominl msses, questionble bck, neck nd hip issues, s well s irregulr chest sounds which could be pneumoni, cncer, or n enlrged hert. Knowing the extent of ny illness or condition llows the stff to prescribe the necessry tretment nd to dvise potentil dopters of the niml s prognosis. It plced the wheels in motion to put on Spring Fundriser in conjunction with our Vccintion Clinic, to rise dditionl funds needed to purchse n X-ry mchine. It s big ticket item for sure, but thnks to orgniztions like VCA Chrities, individuls in the Burbnk Community, nd the efforts of our volunteers, we feel confident we cn mke this exciting dvncement for the Shelter relity. Just knowing tht dog with limp or ct fvoring leg only hs to be tken down the hll for n X-ry mkes me feel like the volunteers re mking huge difference in the qulity of cre the medicl tem cn provide. Amélie s Point of view Our Newsletter SPoNSORS Chinese New Yer 4709, or 2011 in the Western clendr, is the Yer of the Metl Rbbit. A perfect time to find perfect friend in the bunny corrl t the shelter. Just look t some personlity trits tht the strologists give to the humns born in the yer of the Rbbit nd you will see the wy our rel furry buns re known to behve! Clm nd gentle, but persistent. Although seemingly docile, rbbits cn be clculting nd prnkish. They respond to mentl stimultion, initite gmes, nd interct with other living beings. They love to ply with toys nd pprecite their humns providing the toys. These re things tht people who live with rbbits lredy know. UC Dvis even did study tht proved it. (Not tht Amélie ws surprised!) Quietly chrismtic, thoughtful nd clm, rbbits re dmired for their tctful nd considerte delings with ll who know them. Rbbits re friendly, outgoing nd prefer the compny of others. They cn pecefully coexist with cts (mon Dieu!!), dogs (c est bon!), nother rbbit (bien sur) nd of course the friendly person who dopted them. They my be bit indifferent. In the interest of full disclosure, Amélie cnnot leve out un petit personlity flw...ok not relly flw...just something to mke us more interesting! Like you humns, we bunnies re ll individuls nd if your rbbit ppers to be loof, do not despir. Love him for the wy he is. He my, or my not, become more socible s he becomes more fmilir with you. C est l vie! Often re grciously hospitble. Recently the Burbnk Animl Shelter hs llowed few of our bunny buddies to prticipte in Bunny Foster progrm nd these lucky buns hve been ssimilted into households where they re thriving s they wit for permnent doption to occur. Tres micl! Check out the website: http://thevbs.org/kitten-fosters to find foster bunny witing for new home. Yer of the Rbbit Resolution: Adopt one (or more) rbbits from the Burbnk Animl Shelter... see you soon. Au revoir, Amélie Hppy Adoption Story By Ayelet Ifrh nd Mrk Buhen In some wys Finn is specil ct, but in others he s just like ny other ct. My boyfriend nd I decided to dopt nd while there were few other blck cts (my preference) on the shelter s website, once I sw Finn nd red tht he hd been in the shelter for three long months, I knew he needed us. After meeting him nd hering bout his life in the home of horder with 80 other cts, it ws cler this little boy deserved brek nd we could give him tht. At first it seemed like strnge mtch - young couple who hve never hd ct - dopting shy rescue with vision problems from cloudy eye. But he ws immeditely prt of our fmily, nd fmily loves you flws nd ll. The first month ws bit rough. Finn thought we were out to get him nd spent most of his time under our sof. Some dys if we didn t put his food under the couch he wouldn t come out to et. Slowly, things begn to chnge. Three months on he my still not enjoy being picked up, but he follows us from room to room, loves mking muffins while getting his chin scrtched, knows exctly how to guilt us into giving him tret, nd devours ll toys with fethers or ctnip. My boyfriend nd I tell ech other ll the time how much we re looking forwrd to coming home to him when we re out nd he s lwys there lening his hed over the side of his perch to greet us. After tking wht some my hve considered chnce, Finn s proven to be s good s ny other ct, except tht to us he s better becuse he s ours! We know tht our tking chnce mens tht one more little guy will get to hve pretty gret life full of npping, chowing down, nd getting ers scrtched. Menwhile, we get something sweet, funny, nd lwys entertining. Adelit Alvrez 818.559.5482 GoodDogK9Trining.com www.thevbs.org 3

MEET THE VETS We re plesed to introduce the veterinrins who mnge the shelter s very busy Medicl Deprtment. Dr. Leh Greer grduted from UC DAVIS Vet school nd did internship nd residency in Zoologicl Medicine t the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She is, worldwide, one of only 135 doctors certified s Diplomte of the Americn College of Zoologicl Medicine (DACZM.) Her previous experience includes working t the Ntionl Aqurium in Bltimore, s Lb Animl Veterinrin t UC Berkley, nd Senior Clinicl Veterinrin t the LA Zoo. In ddition to working t the Burbnk shelter, she currently is the contrct vet for the Teching Zoo t Moorprk City College. Dr. Greer sys I ws excited to tke prt-time job t the shelter to decrese my crzy work lod nd spend more time with my kids s single mom of 4 yer old boy nd 2 yer old girl. I ws especilly excited bout the shelter job becuse I herd such gret things bout the BAS, nd how they help the nimls who don t hve owners nd cn t help themselves (similr to zoo medicine in my opinion!) I m hppy to sy tht I love it! Dr. Hrriet Howe grduted from University of Centrl Arknss in Conwy, Arknss, nd obtined her Vet degree from Louisin Stte University School of Veterinry Medicine in Bton Rouge, Louisin. In 1992 she estblished mixed niml house nd frm cll prctice clled Feline to Equine House nd Rnch Clls. Dr. Howe spent severl yers s the owner of Roxford Veterinry Clinic in Sylmr, Cliforni. Currently, Dr. Howe works t the shelter nd t the sme time mintins busy veterinry house cll prctice. Dr. Howe is hppily prcticing house cll, shelter, nd relief medicine on multi-species (between soccer, PTA meetings, krte, dnce, school field trips, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) Support the worthwhile efforts of the Medicl Deprtment by contributing to the current VBAS inititive. The gol is to rise funds for the necessry equipment, supplies, nd instlltion of n X-ry mchine. Any funds rised beyond the cost of the X-ry will support the other vluble work of the medicl stff. 4 f eture d v o l u n teer kj Willims Nme: KJ Willims, Website Mnger How did you first come to volunteer for the VBAS? I miss hving dog nd my husbnd Trvis doesn t (yet!) consider himself dog person, so I decided to volunteer somewhere where I could put my unspent puppy love to good use. I ws worried I d crumble nd wnt to tke every niml home, but I ve mnged to void tht by thinking of it s helping lot of nimls find good homes rther thn rescuing just one. How hve you helped the VBAS improve our use of technology? At first, I steered volunteers with technology needs towrds solutions they didn t know were there -- for exmple, we strted using more online surveys nd leverging our piles of volunteer logging dt in new wys to support grnt proposls nd things like the vccintion progrm. In the lst few months though, the VBAS hs tken big lep forwrd with whole new online presence. The new web site will let us get informtion posted more quickly nd help the public find it more esily -- informtion bout our nimls, bout how to volunteer, how to donte, wht specil events re coming up, the whole enchild. One of the benefits of being volunteer is the vccine progrm, which you coordinte. How does it work? It s net benefit tht llows volunteers to get vccintions for their dogs nd cts t cost. To be eligible, volunteer must hve completed the minimum 6 months of service nd be in good stnding, bsed on the hours they hve logged in the lst 6 months. Do you hve pets? Who re they? I hve two cts, Antimony nd Nickel. They re 13 nd 11 nd re nice enough to let us live in their house nd serve s their furniture. Yes, they re nmed fter chemicl elements. Yes, I m big nerd. When sked if they hd nything to shre with the newsletter, they hd this to sy, We certify the inside of this house is 98% squirrel free nd would like the public to know tht our humns do not feed us nerly enough trets. Wht is your messge to the community? If you re looking for pet, dopt shelter niml. If your life hs been touched by n niml, consider volunteering or donting to support shelter. Oh, nd resistnce is futile. If you re interested in becoming volunteer t the Burbnk Animl Shelter, plese check http://thevbs.org/volunteer for informtion.

Giving Opportunities No Bones About it, We Need An X-Ry Mchine VBAS lwys hs s our min gol the doption of our nimls. Every progrm, publiction or presenttion hs incresing doptions t its core. Our newest inititive will be to purchse n X-ry mchine for the Medicl Progrm. No longer will Fido or Fluffy hve to be crted nd bumped long the rod, only to wit for medicl professionl to exmine them. Insted, medicl professionl t the shelter will hve the bility to dminister nd ssess the X-rys for bone breks, tumors, hert conditions, etc. right wy, hopefully reducing the mount of time tht the dog, ct, or bunny is in pin. The sooner one of our shelter residents cn be heled, the sooner we cn hope to hve them dopted nd settled in their forever home! Cn you help mke this drem relity? Give tody to speed us on the wy to our very own X-ry mchine! Thnk you for your support. All dontions s prt of this cmpign will be used for the Medicl Progrm. Should the funds rised exceed the costs of the X-ry, the necessry supplies, nd the instlltion, ny remining monies will be directed towrd specilized surgicl procedures, tretments, nd other medicl equipment nd supplies. Yes, I m tlking bout dogs, but dogs re pck nimls tht hve need for order, rules, nd leder. With some dogs, if there is no leder, they will tke tht spot. If your dog becomes the leder, behviorl problems cn occur (pulling, jumping, brking, begging for food or ttention, ggression.) Don t worry tht you will hurt the dog s feelings if you re the one in control. Dogs like hving leder. It is prt of their pck mentlity. A leder s job is to guide you in the right direction, help you hndle sitution properly nd tech you how to hndle future problems. Hving leder gives dogs sense of security nd confidence. We set limits with children, so tht they will grow up to be well mnnered, responsible, nd well djusted. Why wouldn t we do the sme for our doggie compnion? At times we overlook bd behvior from our furry friends; fter ll who cn it hurt? The simple nswer: it hurts the dog nd us if inpproprite behvior cuses our dog to spend less nd less time with the fmily. Being the leder doesn t men excessive physicl control. There re nturl nd simple wys to show your dog tht you re the leder. There re exmples of the sme rules in mny res of life, business, fmilies, friends, nd between nimls themselves. Here re some of the wys we cn distinguish who the leders re: THE RIGHT To Be Above All Others To Be Fed On Demnd To Hve The Right Of Wy To Hve The Best Plce To Get Attention On Demnd To Clim All Possessions To Control Pssge To Control Destintion To Control Touching To Correct ACTION Never llow dog bove your hed. Any food or tret is given when you choose nd the dog must work for it. (Do commnd) You go through doors nd wlkwys first. Chirs & bed re yours. (You my llow them on, if there is no ggression problem) Attention is given when you choose nd they must work for it. (Do commnd) You control toys nd when to use them. (At the end of the gme you keep the toys) Hve the dog move wy from the pth. (Use commnds to relocte dog) You control where the dog should be on wlks, indoors, nd outdoors. You should be ble to touch your dog nywhere on the body. (Only if it is sfe) You should give correction when it is needed. (Only if it is sfe) These rules exist in our dily lives s well. Our bosses require work for py (Right To Be Fed On Demnd,) t school we re given tests nd grded (Right To Correct,) when we drive we hve lws tht set speed limits, wht side of the rod to use nd when to stop (Right to Control Destintion.) We re not lwys thrilled with rules, but the structure nd order provided llows us to led sfe nd helthy lives. Tking control nd setting down rules nd expecttions shows your love for your dog nd won t mke your dog love you less, but in fct will build stronger bond of respect nd love. Your dog will be confident nd relxed nd ble to hndle lmost ny sitution or know you will led him through difficult circumstnces. You might just be surprised when you see wht you nd your dog cn do when you work together on gol. If you don t expect much you won t get much. Just remember it will tke work nd you hve to tke the led. So work on heel, sit, down, sty, nd come with your dog; but don t forget to work on your ledership skills, they my be even more importnt. H VERY IMPORTANT NOTE H If t ny time you feel something is unsfe or you re deling with issuses of ggression contct profesionl triner or niml behviorlist Lydi Perez of Hppy Tils Dog Trining is working with certin dogs t the shelter to improve their doptbility. Dontions mde to the Dog Trining Progrm of VBAS help to support this worthwhile effort.

TheScrtching Post by Ceceli Mrtinez, Director of Kitten Foster Progrm For Elk, cheerful gry kitten with white socks, the most intimidting thing ws the tll ct tree in her foster home. She hd not yet found the courge to climb to the top of it. It wsn t the height, or the fct tht the other cts often hogged the set t the top. Nope. It ws tht climbing ws wkwrd, getting down ws worse. Her left front leg ws different from other cts legs nd tht mde climbing the huge tree n insurmountble obstcle... Elk hd rrived t the shelter couple of weeks erlier, eger to find home, but hobbling on three legs. It ws cler tht she hd potentilly serious medicl condition tht might require surgery. Although she hd positive ttitude, nd didn t seem to be in ny pin, it ws decided to plce her into the Kitten Foster Progrm in order to better observe her injury, nd provide quiet plce for recovery should surgery become necessry. When the results from her x-rys nd biopsies cme in, it ws determined tht Elk hd broken her left shoulder s young kitten, nd left untreted, it hd heled bdly. The old injury left her with n wkwrd git, but thnkfully would not require surgery. Not tht Elk ws dwelling on the pst; she ws on the serch for the perfect forever home. In the weeks she hd been in her foster home she hd become more confident using her injured leg, running, jumping, nd yes, eventully mstering the climb to the top of the ct tree. Elk is well behved, sweet, nd very vocl kitten. She loves chsing Jsper s well s cuddling with us. The two cts get long very well nd when they ren t plying with ech other or grooming ech other they re following us round hoping for trets, sys dopter Chris Addis. Her wlk hs not improved but the vet ssures us she is not in pin. It does not hinder her ctivity; she runs nd jumps with no hesittion. Ech yer the Kitten Foster Progrm receives pproximtely 300 kittens who re too young for shelter environment. Others, like Elk, require extr cre or medicl tretment before they re doptble. The Kitten Foster Progrm volunteers provide comfortble home setting for these kittens, nd re wtchful for ny medicl needs tht should rise. If these young chrges re witing medicl cre or recovering from procedure, their foster moms nd dds re there to dminister medictions, monitor progress nd supply extr TLC. Thnks to the generous support of our donors, the Kitten Foster Progrm is ble to sve the lives of hundreds of kittens every yer, even those tht fce medicl obstcles.
