Program: Helen Bennett introduced our speaker Dr. Michael Francis. The title of his talk was Before Jamestown: Rethinking the Early History of Colonial Spanish Florida. Dr. Francis discussed the much neglected history of colonization in the US southeast in the 16th century, which began almost a century before Jamestown. He discussed the research he is doing and the website he is creating to document Colonial Spanish Florida. Spanish Florida settlement went all the way up to Virginia. He teaches students how to read and write colonial Spanish. They had an expedition of 2000 up the east coast of the US. There were numerous settlements as far up as the Tennessee area. Roll Call of Ancestors: Margaret Christie, Bruce Christie and Bridget Pascale conducted the roll call of ancestors. John Howland had the most descendants present at 10. 50/50 Winner: Kelly Alio won the 50/50 drawing. Mayflower Compact: George Pratt read the Mayflower Compact. Benediction: Elder Margaret Christie gave the benediction. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 2:15 pm by Colony Governor Laura Brock. Next Meeting: Next Meeting will be November 4, 2017.

May Meeting Highlights At our May meeting, Dr. J. Michael Francis, the Hough Family Endowed Chair of Florida Studies at USF Saint Petersburg spoke to us about early Spanish Florida. Dr. Francis gave an overview of La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas which he is creating. The project provides an interactive, multidisciplinary and comprehensive vision of Florida that helps bring a picture of Spanish exploration of the state into sharp focus. Just think of some of the implications our databases and discoveries will make possible, Francis said. Some people of African descent will be able to trace their ancestry directly to this early St. Augustine enclave. And those of Spanish descent will be able to connect to descendants who landed in America more than seven decades before the Mayflower. More than anything, our site will provide the details, visuals and stories to present Florida s unknown history in a compelling and entertaining way that is unprecedented. We were all highly entertained by Dr. Francis talk and he was kind enough to answer many questions from the audience. Junior News Update on 2016 Scholarship Winner Lindsay Peterson, granddaughter of Bradford Colony Member Kay Peterson was the recipient of the Florida Mayflower Society Scholarship in 2016. She is a second-year student at the Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in Public Policy, minoring in Environmental Science and French, and pursuing a career in City and Regional Planning. She spent the summer as a research intern in Nagpur, India performing water quality research with an American Fulbright Scholar at the National Environmental Engineering Institute to investigate the effects of intermittent water supply on water quality in municipal water supply. Additionally, she has been selected to travel with 15 other women in the Greek community at Georgia Tech to Senegal this spring. Her group has been raising money over the past year to build a school for girls, and this spring they will go to help break ground in Dakar.
