The Electronic Vizsla News February, 2013 Number 6 The information contained in the Electronic Vizsla News is for the membership of the Vizsla Club of America and may not be reproduced or forwarded without permission. President s Message Hi everyone, This is a short issue; we want to reach all of our members with important and time sensitive announcements and material. The announcement referencing the status of our 2013 VCA National Championship Field Trial is reprinted below (page 7). The committee has been working in earnest to secure a suitable alternative site that is available within our prescribed timeframe. We hope to have an update, and a subsequent announcement to share with everyone as soon as possible. We are looking for volunteers who are willing to be considered as candidates for the 2014 VCA Nominating Committee. A minimum of two members from each of the three regions of the country must appear on the general election ballot.. See the announcement on page 5 for more information. Jan Simer, Chair of VCA Hall of Fame Committee has included a reminder in this issue (page 3). Remember that March 1st is deadline for nominations. 2013 VCA NGDC - (Calhan. CO) Chair Joan Heimbach has included an update (page 4). 2013 VCA National Specialty Show and Companion Events ( Minnetonka, MN): Watch our VCA website as more details / reservation forms will be posted soon. We are currently auctioning off the back cover of the NE catalog. Vicky May is accepting online bids (serenityvizslas@cox.net). We also have a limited raffle - grand prize is a $1,000 VISA gift card. See the announcement on page 5. Only 27 tickets remain!!

The correct email address for submission of PennHip results to Pam Hidaka, Breed Improvement Committee, is in the reprint from January Vizsla News (page 6). Sad news: Lifetime member Jane Graff passed away in her sleep Dec 17, 2012. She was an early editor of The Vizsla News. The note from her daughter Lecia Motley stated I just received a copy of the January - March 2013 issue of The Vizsla News. It brought back a lot of memories from my childhood: sitting around the kitchen table, folding, addressing, and stamping the paper edition of the early Vizsla News that my mother, Jane Graff, was editing. Condolences may be sent: Family of Jane Graff, 1997 280 th Rd, Seward NE 68434 That's all for now, Linda Table of Contents: Presidents Message Page 1 Membership Chair/EVN editor comments Page 2 Hall of Fame Announcement / 2014 Nomination Committee Page 3 2013 NGDC Announcement Page 4 Breed Improvement/Penn Hip Page 5 Status of 2013 NFC trial / 2013 Nationals Raffle Page 6 PROVISIONAL 2103 Regional Club Directory Page 7 Membership Chair s Report Renewals are nearly done, thank goodness. Check to VCA, PO Box 90, Friendsville TN 37737-0090 or email me and I can invoice you via Paypal. Indicate which issue(s) you want, please!! A PROVISIONAL Regional Club listing page is on page 7. It includes all the updates/corrections I ve received. Please review for your club s information and let me know of any changes before March 1 when the directory will be put together and sent to the printer!!! Happy Spring!! Shella Fuhrman

2013 Hall of Fame Nomination Reminder The nominations for the 2013 VCA Hall of Fame are due by March 1, 2013. All nomination forms and information are available on the Vizsla Club of America website at http://vcaweb.org/breed/hall_of_fame.shtml As this year is a transition year, per our move to a Spring National Specialty Event, the voting for the 2013 nominees will be held as previously done with election ballots in the late summer. Therefore the 2013 inductee/inductees will be celebrated at the 2014 Spring National Specialty Events. Thank you for supporting the great honor of this program. We can be tremendously proud of the heritage, contributions, and Mission of our VCA Hall of Fame. "The Vizsla Club of America holds in highest esteem Vizslas, who, by virtue of their own outstanding achievements, and/or those of their get, reflect the essence of the breed's character and purpose. These dogs epitomize the Vizsla as that of a Sporting Breed. During their lifetimes, they have achieved national recognition, have left an everlasting impression upon the breed, have excelled in show, field, or have been recognized for uniquely exceptional accomplishments or firsts for the breed. The Vizsla Club of America has established a HALL OF FAME to honor the memories of these dogs," forevermore." Please direct any questions to the Hall of Fame Committee: Jan Simer wns44@aol.com Carol Phelps SZIZLIN3@aol.com Linda Promaulayko brylynns@eclipse.net *********************************************************************** Volunteers needed for 2014 Nominating Committee This is an appeal for volunteers to be considered as a candidate for the 2014 VCA Nominating Committee. ( We need at least two candidates from each of the three regions.) Send your name with a resume (limited to 100 words) to VCA Recording Secretary Greg Dutson greg@baroquevizslas.com. The deadline is February 15 so act now!!!

2013 NGDC Updates from Event Chairman Joan Heimbach The premium for the VCA NAtional Gun Dog Championship will be available February 15th. Host club, Rocky Mountain Vizsla Club, is looking forward to hosting dogs from all over the country as they come the The Wild, Wild West in Calhan, Colorado, April 5 to conclusion. Right now is the time to place an ad in the event catalog or make a donation to the event. Contacts for raffle donations and trophy donations are posted under event news on the official VCA website. A schedule of events, info on lodging and contacts for the event are listed there. There is also a causal Facebook page, Unofficial VCA NGDC Updates page to keep you informed of interim developments. There is a photo tour of the course posted on the host club s website. www.rmvc.org. From these views you can see the variety of objectives, from creek beds to ponds and crop rows and you can see the gentle terrain for walking handlers. This is a premier private hunting preserve and highly regarded in eastern Colorado, home to two previous national pointing dog national championships. There has been some concern about altitude and possible impact on dog performance. After checking with several veterinarians and people who have moved horses and dogs from sea level to altitude, the consensus is that dogs would have no issues. As one vet put it, These dogs are in top physical conditioning, they are athletes, they will adjust quickly. Remember, the altitude at Fort Robinson (horseback NFT) was 3,678 ft! Plenty of flat land dogs did quite well at that event! Calhan is 6,500 ft. so there is about a 2,800 ft. difference between these two locations. Calhan is not in the mountains - true Rocky Mountain altitude is thousands of feet above the prairie. Precautions will be made to have plentiful water on course and there are already several ponds for water on course. Hydration is always important. A reminder, there will be comparable terrain training and exercise grounds of several hundred acres, off course, available beginning Thursday morning at 9:00AM for dogs and handlers. Your hosts are looking forward to welcoming you to The Wild, Wild West!

BREED IMPROVEMENT REPORT Pam Hidaka, Breed Improvement Chairman Recording PennHip Evaluations for Vizslas VCA Breed Improvement and the OFA have arranged to record PennHip Distraction Indexes (D.I.) in the OFA / Canine Health Information Center database. For dogs that already have a record with the OFA (hip, elbow, cardiac, thyroid, patella etc.) I have negotiated a reduced rate with the OFA of $7.50 for submission and recording of PennHip Distraction Indexes. For dogs that do not already have a standing record with the OFA, the cost of PennHip submission and recording will be $25. To have your dog s PennHip D.I.s recorded, please submit a copy of the PennHip Evaluation Report to me. I will verify these with PennHip and send them on to the OFA for recording. Only the Left and Right Distraction Indexes will be recorded. We do not have any estimates right now regarding how long this new process will take from collection, verification and recording. PennHip Evaluation Reports will be batched to both PennHip and the OFA. The OFA will only accept PennHip Distraction Indexes for publication that have been verified and submitted by VCA Breed Improvement. Please note this collection and recording of PennHip information does not change or affect the current VCA advertising policy requiring OFA hip numbers. PennHip remains an optional test for hip evaluations. Please send a photocopy or email a digital copy of your PennHip Hip Evaluation Report to: Pam Hidaka VCA Breed Improvement P.O. Box 58 Redmond, WA 98073-0058 vca.bic@gmail.com NOTE, this is correct email address, do not use the addie in January 2013 Vizsla News. Digital copies are preferred. Please indicate on the e mail subject line: PennHip for <dog s name> Send a check made out to Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to the Breed Improvement chairman referencing the dog AKC registration number(s) on the check. $7.50 per report for dogs having an existing record in the OFA database $25.00 per report for dogs with no OFA record

Status of 2013 National Field Championship Trial The site for the 2013 VCA Natl Field Championship Trial, unfortunately, is not yet determined. Recently, the Board of Directors approved two dates at Optima Lakes, OK, that were later determined to be unacceptable by the State of Oklahoma. Our Standing National Events Chair (Rita Mather), Field Advisory Chair (Laurie Wonnell), and 2013 Field Trial Committee Chair (Warren Eizman) are evaluating potential sites for availability in Kansas, Arkansas, and Nebraska that will fall within the traditional window for this VCA National Event, which is October 15-November15th. We regret delays in scheduling this event, and will provide an update as soon as a site and dates are determined. Thank you for your patience.
