As usual, we held a very successful obedience trial over Labor Day weekend in September. Entries were down a bit, but that is happening all over the country right now. The venue was as usual our Sheriff s Posse Grounds site. Some people may object to that site, but it is far more affordable than anywhere else, and in this economy, we do have to watch our expenses. It seems to work well for most humans and dogs, and the footing is excellent for all. High in Trial on Sunday was Martha Kent s Border Collie, Blaze out of Novice B with a 199. This was a very pretty run to watch! Also on Sunday, High Combined went to Laurie Sasaki and Erin True with a total score of 396. OTCh Navarro s Runs With Scissors UDX 16, OM3, RA is an Aussie who hails from California. We should be glad his not around here regularly with those scores and titles! On Monday, HIT went to Fanfare Aw Shucks UDX2, NAJ who is a Border Terrier owned by Kurt and Mary Ann Lehmann from Albuquerque. High Combined once again went to Laurie Sasaki and Scissors with a combined score in Open and Utility of 396.5! This is truly a dynamic duo! Other special awards from Sunday which went to SDOC members were HS Working Zora Rottweiler owned by Nancy Stafford; HS Toy Jude Chihuahua owned by Donna Sloan; HS Herding and Agility Dog Blaze BC owned by Martha Kent; HS Champion and HS Veteran Dog Blizzard Min. Poodle owned by Nancy Pollock who was also the HS Senior and Super Senior Handler. The HS Belgian Sheepdog was Spirit, owned by LeAnn and Steve Miller. HS German Shepherd was Paako owned by Jane Fothergill. HS Poodle was Blizzard owned by Nancy Pollock. HS Flat - Coated Retriever was Sparks owned by Janice Anthes. HS Rottweiler was Zora owned by Nancy Stafford. HS Standard Schnauzer was Corey owned by Pat White. Other SDOC dogs and handlers who qualified on Sunday were, in Novice: Ty, German Shepherd and Rosemary Burtch. In Open: Pogo Belgian Sheepdog and Richard Cummings, Brandie Cocker Spaniel and Shari Avent; Abby Border Collie and Toi Tschohl; Panda Aussie and Jeff Robb; Key Border Collie and Evi Fox. In Utility: No Utility A dogs qualified and in Utility B no qualifiers other than those already listed were from SDOC. Martha Kent and Blaze Border Collie win HIT on Sunday On Monday we did not have all the Special Trophies. Qualifying scores went to the following SDOC dogs and their owners: In Novice B: Rosemary Burtch and Ty German Shepherd, Nancy Stafford and Zora Rottweiler, Susan Boswell and Lily Papillon, Sherry Rogers and Drifter Rottweiler, Martha Kent and Blaze Border Collie, and Donna Sloan and Jude Chihuahua. In Open A: Toi Tschohl and Abby Border Collie. In Open B: Carolee Douglas and Makin Out Cocker Spaniel, Evi Fox and Heart of Gold Golden Retriever, Nancy Pollock and Blizzard Miniature Poodle, Laurie Sasaki and Scissors Australian Shepherd and Evi Fox and Key Border Collie In Utility A: Mary Lee Priestley and Mischief Border Collie. In Utility B: Laurie Sasaki and Scissors Australian Shepherd, Leslie Swisher and Gus German Wirehaired Pointer, and Evi Fox and Key Border Collie. Rally results will be found on page 11. Palladia: First Drug Approved For Cancer In Dogs 6/3/2009. Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA Government Information Release The U.S. FDA today announced the approval of Palladia (toceranib phosphate), the first drug developed specifically for the treatment of cancer in dogs. Palladia is approved to treat canine cutaneous (skin-based) mast cell tumors, a type of cancer responsible for about 1 out of 5 cases of canine skin tumors. The drug is approved to treat the tumors with or without regional lymph node involvement. All cancer drugs now used in veterinary medicine originally were developed for use in humans and are not approved for use in animals. Cancer treatments used in animals are used in an extra-label manner as allowed by the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994. This cancer drug approval for dogs is an important step forward for veterinary medicine, said Bernadette Dunham, DVM, Ph.D., director of FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine. Prior to this approval, veterinarians had to rely on human oncology drugs, without knowledge of how safe or effective they would be for dogs. Today's approval offers dog owners, in consultation with their veterinarian, an option for treatment of their dog's cancer. While canine mast cell tumors often appear small and insignificant, they can be a very serious form of cancer in dogs. Some mast cell tumors are easily removed without the development of any further problems, while others can lead to life threatening disease. Palladia is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor and works in two ways: by killing tumor cells and by cutting off the blood supply to the tumor. In a clinical trial, Palladia showed a statistically significant difference in tumor shrinkage when compared with an inactive substance (placebo). The most common side effects associated with Palladia are diarrhea, decrease or loss of appetite, lameness, weight loss, and blood in the stool. Palladia is manufactured by Pfizer Animal Health Inc., New York City.
