Quinn s parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. He was allergic to animals with fur, but he wanted a pet more than anything. Quinn s mom suggested that they go to Royal Pets, a local pet store. When Quinn and his parents walked into Royal Pets, the clerk offered to help them. Quinn explained that he wanted a pet that wouldn t make him sneeze. Well, snakes don t have fur, she said. But Quinn didn t really like snakes. And his parents didn t look pleased with the idea either. I think I have the perfect pet for you, the clerk said. Follow me. Quinn knew he could handle the cleaning. So he picked out a book to learn how to care for a betta fish. He wanted to learn all he could about his new pet. Betta fish are also called Siamese fighting fish, so buy only one for your tank, the clerk said. You might want to place a mirror outside the tank. Then, your fish will feel like there is another fish nearby when it sees its own reflection. Quinn s dad said the fish was Quinn s, only if he promised one thing. He had to be responsible for it. No problem! Quinn shouted. And I promise not to sneeze! The clerk directed Quinn and his parents to the aquarium section. After looking at fish, turtles, and snails for a while, Quinn decided that he liked betta fish best. They had long, flowing fins and could live well in small tanks. A small tank would fit best in Quinn s bedroom. Are the tanks difficult to clean? Quinn asked the clerk. You will have a small tank, so it won t be too hard. You can use a gentle filter to help keep the water clean, she answered. You should change half of the water each month. 2
