We had wonderful adoptions and very successful fundraisers. Now we look forward to an even bigger and better 2017. Our first big fundraiser will be our annual Pins for Pets bowling event on March 4th. This is always so much fun that you won t want to miss it! Having the shelter just outside the city brings in so many different forms of wildlife, everything from a variety of birds to deer, fox and most recently, pheasants. We have seen one rooster and two hens coming to eat under the birdfeeders. Many people coming to visit at the shelter have had the opportunity to see them, too. Unfortunately some of the outdoor critters are unwanted inside. Last year proved to be a terrible year for mice. With the mice come fleas and the chance of your pet picking up tapeworms from ingesting mice infested with fleas. If your pet swallows fleas, maybe while grooming himself, an adult tapeworm could grow inside his intestines. A tapeworm can grow from 4 to 28 inches long. Chances are you won t see the adult worm. As it grows, though, some of its segments fall off and pass through your pet s feces. You may see these tiny parts crawling near your pet s backside or on his bedding or moving around in his feces. If you notice anything like this, you will want to talk with your vet. There are several safe prescription drugs that can treat tapeworms. Monthly flea protection will help minimize serious problems. In November, WCAHS was invited to Shell Lake Health Care Center. My dogs, Digger & Five, along with two 8 week old kittens, went to visit and show off a little. Digger and Five showed the residents some of their tricks and the kittens simply warmed/purred their way into the hearts of everyone! Patti Bass from Spooner Vet Clinic and her daughter, Taye, came along to help handle the animals. We had a super visit and as you can see from the pictures, everyone enjoyed the love and kisses given by the animals. We look forward to visiting again! Years ago I had hoped to find a small piece of land in the city to create a pet cemetery for the public but was unable to find a place that would work. With the help of different people through the years, we cleared out a part of the woods on our property. We made a pathway which we continue to work on, along with adding plants and solar lights to create an attractive, peaceful place for people to visit and the animals to forever rest. We hope to get some fencing to go around the entire cemetery and also make a memory path with stone or bricks. Some of the proceeds from our 2016 Tree of Lights were designated to go directly to improving the cemetery, so we will start working on this when the weather gets nicer. PINS FOR PETS ANNUAL BOWLING FUNDRAISER The Washburn County Area Humane Society's Pins for Pets 9-Pin Tap Bowling Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Northwoods Lanes, located in Spooner. The last 3 years of running 3 shifts throughout the day have been a strikingly successful turkey, so Northwoods Bowling Alley Owner, Mike Miller, and the Pins for Pets Tournament Committee are going to do it again! These 3 bowling shifts will begin at 1 PM, 4 PM, and 7 PM (this last shift is Cosmic Bowling for those who enjoy the disco balllighted effect). The registration fee for this event will be $20, which will include 3 games of bowling, shoes and ball rental, snacks, prizes, a donation to WCAHS, and the fun of bowling for a great cause. The profit from this event, as well as any WCAHS fundraiser, is used for the ongoing operation of the shelter. Bowlers of all ages and skill levels are welcome. A 9-Pin Tap Tournament allows more bowlers the fun of getting a higher score because when 9 pins are knocked down with the first ball, it counts as a strike. Bowlers may come as a team or sign up individually. Pre-registration is suggested and this may be done by calling Northwoods Lanes and Lounge at 715-939-1203, or by stopping at the alley. Bowlers may also register to bowl on the day of the event if there are still openings left. The donation form competition is also back again. If you bring in your donation sheet with $100 or more, you will bowl for free! A donation sheet may be downloaded from the shelter website www.wcahs.com or picked up at the shelter or bowling alley. This competition is another wonderful way of making this fundraiser a financial success. Also, if anyone would like to bring in an item from the shelter Wish List, they will receive a ticket for a chance to win a prize. WCAHS is very thankful for those who will spare the time and strike up the enthusiasm to join in the fun of Pins for Pets on Saturday, March 4! Stewie is sitting in front of all the donations given by patrons who attended the Christmas Eve party held at Snags Bar and Graycen is pictured with a blanket he won at the last meat raffle. Throughout A BIG THANK YOU TO SNAG S the year, Snags holds meat raffles and our annual Critter Benefit in the fall. Last year, $3,685 was raised for WCAHS through these events. A huge thanks to Nancy and everyone who gives so generously to insure all the animals that come to us will always be cared for! TRAIL RIDE FUNDRAISER The Washburn County Area Humane Society will hold its second annual Happy Trails for Happy Tails trail ride at Dugan Run horse trails on Saturday, May 6 th. Dugan Run horse trails are 11 miles east of Spooner. The ride last year, with almost perfect weather, brought in 24 horse/ rider combinations from as far away as Ashland, Iron River, Lake Nebagamon and Osseo. A cookout will take place after the ride, with a raffle, door prizes, and prizes for the most money raised, the oldest rider, and the rider who traveled the farthest. SHELTER REPORT (cont d from page 1) Don t forget about the WCAHS S.N.A.P. program. Spread the word to people who want to have their pet altered but might need help with the cost of the surgery. Our program pays for $50 towards each spay or neuter. Applications can be found on our website or one can be mailed to you by calling or emailing the shelter. We have three pets that have been here since September 2016 and are still patiently waiting for a new home and family! Chance was a skinny, scared hound that the Spooner Police and I tried to catch last fall. He was scared of everything, was not house trained, had never walked on leash and weighed just 46 pounds. With good food, walks from staff and volunteers and some loving foster care provided by Jen Tavolacci, Chance is now house trained, social and weighs 62 pounds! Like Chance, Sugar and Grace both came in with issues of their own, not to mention nursing kittens. Their kittens were adopted but they still wait. Sugar and Grace have become best friends since coming to WCAHS and they get the privilege of staying out in the lobby all night long. Both are very friendly, love attention, are pretty laid back and have great personalities. Maybe you are the one who can provide a loving home to one of these three awesome pets! REMEMBER TO SAVE YOUR ALUMINUM CANS! SALE FOR TAILS THRIFT SALE We re planning our annual thrift sale for August 4-5 at the Washburn County Fairgrounds. We re looking for gently used donations of all kinds, except TV s, computers, or clothes. Two days prior to the sale, we will be accepting donations at the Fairgrounds. We have limited space to store items before then, but if special arrangements need to be made, please contact the shelter at 715-635-4720. Also, if you are willing to help out at the sale, we would appreciate you contacting us. Plan to be a part of this worthwhile event, either by donating items, volunteering to help, or coming to shop. CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR THE ANIMALS At Christmas, Grant Popp asked people he knew to give Christmas presents for the animals at the shelter. He collected many wonderful items such as food, treats and toys for the dogs and cats. What a thoughtful thing this was for Grant to do! Thank you! PENS FOR PETS Aylana Luedtke has been decorating pens to sell to raise money for the animals at WCAHS. You can find Pens for Pets at Shear Style Salon, Arrow Appliance and WCAHS. There are all sorts of different designs. She does an excellent job. Pick one up the next time you stop by the shelter or one of the businesses that have them displayed. Aylana and her brother, Jay, also brought in all kinds of supplies, food, treats and toys for the animals. A HELPING HAND Dakotah Scalzo is one of our regular volunteers here at WCAHS. He usually comes at least twice a week with his mom, Roseanna, to spend time playing with the cats. His mom says He loves that place so much because you make it enjoyable for him to learn and just be a child at play! Dakotah has also started helping to fold laundry and other chores to help teach him that even the not so fun stuff is a very important part of caring for the animals! LITTER BOX CAKE, ANYONE? On Halloween, Roseanna Norquest donated all the supplies to make a litter box cake to share at the shelter. Chris Ottosen was the first to give this interesting cake a try. Not everyone was as willing as Chris to taste it! For her birthday, Kendra Rogan again asked for gifts for the animals rather than for herself. You really have to appreciate how giving these young people are! THANKS AGAIN, KENDRA! 4

Heather Riviere, Territory Manager for Ceva Animal Health, donated a number of topical flea treatments, ear cleaner and other items when she visited WCAHS in December. WCAHS is very grateful for her and her company's generosity. Heather made friends with Happy Toes during her visit and she stopped by a second time with more great donations for the cats and dogs. 5

2016 TREE OF LIGHTS WCAHS celebrated the annual Tree of Lights on December 1, 2016 in a new and exciting way. We partnered with Spooner Market & Grill to recognize the fact that over 10,000 animals have come through our doors since we opened our facility in 2000. This special event included mitten ornaments, made and donated by the quilters at Thimbles Quilt Shop in Spooner. Those who purchased the mittens had a chance to win one of dozens of donated prizes. Conner Dorn was the lucky recipient of a $50 bill! We had an absolutely wonderful response to this change in venue for our Tree of Lights and we thank all of those who attended. UP NORTH FURRY FUNDRAISER Thanks to all who bought raffle tickets for our Up North Furry Fundraiser. The drawing was held on October 8, 2016 and the 1st prize winner of the five foot cedar strip model canoe built by Dennis Williams was Eva Shilling. The other winners were: Russ Estridge who won the Apple watch, Susan Jackson who won the Falling Leaves quilt, Vicki Shaffer who won the St. Croix Mojo Bass Spinning Rod, and Dexie Dunham who won the $150 Cabela s gift card. The winning tickets were drawn by Izzy Wienbergen. RECYCLE OPPORTUNITY WCAHS has an ongoing project to recycle a variety of electronics to raise money for the shelter. Items that can be recycled include the following: inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges (Brother, Canon, Dell, LEX and HP), cell phones, smartphones or iphones, digital cameras and camcorders, GPS units and graphing calculators.
