1 AUTUMN 2018 happy fall everyone! Many of you already know me, for those that don t let me introduce myself. I have been a volunteer for the Hornell Area Humane Society for more than 20 years. I have been on the board for most of those years and president more than once. I once again find myself in the president s seat and am proud to do so. I am also proud of the work that our staff does on a daily basis. Their jobs know no boundaries they are always prepared to do any task at any time. How many employers can say that? These people love animals and put their hearts on the line every single day. They see so much sadness and yet they always return. When it s time to go home their work often goes with them. Dogs brought home because they re so scared, kittens that won t survive the night without being bottle fed, rescuing strays in the middle of the night. I m just as proud of our foster families. By generously opening their homes they allow us to save even more lives. Sometimes they even fall madly in love and become foster failures. Having been both I can assure you that it is immensely rewarding. We welcome the opportunity to meet more families that would like to foster. Last but not least, please join us in honoring so many great people at the 16th Annual Black Cat Event to be held at the Main Place in Hornell on November 3rd. Tickets are available at the shelter. If you want to have fun and be a winner then make sure you come to our Annual Basket Auction November 12th-14th at Maple City Dodge and then The Main Place November 15th-17th. Even if you don t win a basket, you re always a winner in our eyes. Thank you for helping us help the animals. 2 Fleas and ticks are one of the most common problems for our furry friends. Prevention is the KEY to control because they can be so difficult to get rid of once they invade your yard and home, and ticks commonly carry potentially deadly diseases like Lyme. Using a brand name product once a month year-round is the easiest and most common way to steer clear of a flea and tick problem. If you end up with a flea problem with your animals, the following steps must be taken to combat the infestation: KEEPING PETS HEALTHY! Treat ALL animals in the home/on your property with a flea control product (like Frontline, Advantage, Bravecto, Seresto, etc-ask your vet what they recommend and carry). This includes the animals you don t see fleas on and those animals that never come inside (ie barn/stray cats). Once fleas are around, it takes AT LEAST three months of treatment to get on top of the lifecycle. The first month of treatment kills the fleas that come into contact with your pet, but remember, there s thousands of eggs waiting to hatch on your carpet, in the cracks of your hardwood or laminate flooring, and on bedding/furniture. Once they hatch, they re back on your pet, and that first month of flea preventative has worn off.time to treat again! If you see fleas on your pet, one treatment of product WILL NOT take care of the problem Vacuum more than seems sane, and spray a flea-killing product (like Knock-Out) as directed by the product (*be sure to read and follow instructions about removing pets from a treated area if needed*). Sprays are recommended over bombs because then you can spray underneath furniture, whereas the bombs only spray up and then settle on top of furniture. Don t use the $5 flea collars-they re a waste of your money. If you have one, you re better off cutting it up and putting it in your vacuum bag to kills the fleas that get vacuumed up. Wash all the bedding at least once a week. Stay away from permethrin-based products for cats. Lethal reactions can occur! You may need an exterminator to come and treat your yard if the problem is that severe. Some brand name products have guarantees. Talk to your vet about options! **We sell Seresto collars at the Hornell Area Humane Society!** 6258 Ice House Road Hornell, NY (607)
3 I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer! It sure has been a busy one for our shelter. Kitten season upheld its reputation for providing us endless kittens along with our usual summer influx of stray and injured cats and dogs. Our staff and volunteers have been working harder than ever to make sure our furry friends get the TLC and attention they need. We re so thankful for all of our adopters, foster homes, and donors for supporting us as well! The leaves are changing, and so have our hours! Our new hours are 12-5 Tuesday-Saturday and we re closed on Sunday and Monday. This allows us to better accommodate all the behind the scenes work that is imperative for our shelter animals and the many programs we offer. Other hours are available by appointment as needed. Our S.P.I.R.I.T (shelter pups and inmates rehabilitation and integration training) program has successfully expanded to Groveland Correctional Facility! Five dogs have completed the training program with a 100% adoption rate. The initial program started at Steuben County Jail is still going strong also. Our Black Cat Event is coming up November 3rd at 6pm at The Main Place in Hornell. Contact us for tickets and join us for this event that honors individuals that have gone above and beyond to support our shelter, enjoy a delicious dinner, and enter our raffles. -Mary Nisbet, Director upcoming events At CVFP we strive to offer a wide variety of health services in an easily accessible environment. 4 Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. Firmly rooted in your future. maplecitysavings.com Main Office 145 Main Street Hornell, NY (607) Branch Location 7301 Seneca Rd. N Hornell, NY (607)
5 Do not approach! Many times an animal on the loose is already frightened, and approaching the animal may cause it to flee. If it is a friendly animal that approaches you on its own, carefully check for a collar and identification (license tag, rabies tag, owner s information on a tag or sewn into the collar). ** Unless an animal is in extreme danger, it is best to observe from a safe distance until the Dog/Animal Control Officer (DCO/ACO) arrives (see step below). the DCO. At that time, the animal can be adopted out, transferred to another shelter, or euthanized (MOST DCO s in our area do not resort to euthanasia due to space at the facility and make all attempts to find an adoptive home or transfer to a shelter that is better equipped to adopt them out). If the animal has no ID with owner information, contact your local dog/animal control officer to report the found animal. Be sure to give identifying information (closest address, cross roads, and signalment of animal; color, size, male/female). It is best to keep an eye on the animal until the DCO/ACO arrives, so you can tell them a direction the animal goes in should it leave your sight. Report your pet as missing to your local DCO, and surrounding DCO s, in case it traveled some distance or the finder took it to a DCO/shelter in their area. Once contained, the DCO/ACO will scan the animal for a microchip and contact the owner if there is one. Some DCO s have social media (like Facebook) where they will post a picture of the animal to help spread the word that it was found. You may also take a picture and post it to your social media page and/or make flyers stating the animal was found and is in the care of the DCO. Per New York State Law, an owner has five days to come forward for their dog before it becomes property of Distribution Division 1162 Airport Rd. Hornell, NY IF YOU LOSE YOUR ANIMAL: Post a picture of your pet with all identifying information possible to social media and flyers around town with your contact information. If your pet was wearing a collar or is microchipped, include that information also. Some microchip companies offer lost pet services, like LOST poster templates and alerts. To reclaim your pet from a DCO or animal shelter, you MUST be able to provide proof of ownership. Proof of ownership is veterinary records, licensing information, rabies certificate, etc with your name and address and the pet s name and identifying qualities. Per New York State law, your dog must be licensed in the town you live in before a DCO can release it to you. Its rabies vaccine must be up to date to obtain a license.
