We are an all volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded in May 2003 to help the communities in Northeast Louisiana. Our 3rd Annual Bidding for PAWS Online Auction was a great success! We were able to raise $6,500 for our programs which include Animal Shelter Rescue, Spay/Neuter Assistance, Humane Education, Tag Your Pet and Pet Therapy. A big thank you to our sponsors CenturyLink, Progressive Bank, Mojo's of Louisiana, Antique Alley Association, Lowery Studios and Black Bear Lodge and to those who donated items and participated in the auction! CLICK HERE TO BECOME A PAWS MEMBER TODAY! Ryan Newman Foundation Grant Received by PAWS We are very excited to announce that PAWS of NELA has received a grant for our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program from the Ryan Newman Foundation in the amount of $5,000. This will help PAWS spay or neuter an estimated additional 100 pets belonging to low-income pet owners in our community. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ryan Newman and his wife, Krissie, established the Ryan Newman Foundation in January 2005. The mission of the foundation is to educate and encourage people to spay/neuter their pets and to adopt dogs and cats from animal shelters; to educate children and adults about the importance of conservation so the beauty of the great outdoors can be appreciated by future generations; and to provide college scholarship funding through the Rich Vogler Scholarship program to students interested in auto racing careers. Are you a proud rescue dog mom? Check out this cute shirt and the rest of our PAWS gear... visit our online store! Ryan and Krissie Newman are also spokespeople for the Humane Alliance s National Spay Neuter Response Team (NSNRT). PAWS Spay-Neuter Services is working with Humane Alliance and NSNRT to open our low-cost spay/neuter center here in Monroe. 2013 Board of Directors Jo Traylor President Nina Bennett Vice President/Grant Acquisitions Christy Primm Treasurer Christy Whitaker Secretary Jennifer Pesnell Rescue Coordinator Cindy Croft Spay/Neuter Director Julie Lewis Marketing Director Samantha Luttrell Pet Therapy/Humane Education Staci Choate Membership Coordinator If you are a low income pet owner and need assistance getting your pet fixed, visit our Spay/Neuter page for an application. What an honor to be chosen from such an esteemed list of nominated charitable organizations!! Thank you to all of our supporters that voted! We couldn't accomplish our mission without your support. Learn more about PAWS at www.pawsnela.org. Is your pet at risk? Yes this is an unpleasant photo but this is what happens to your pet's heart when it gets infested with heartworms. These worms live and multiply in your pet's heart. How does your pet get infected with heartworms? FROM THE BITE OF A MOSQUITO! For those in the south, if you are not giving your pet heartworm preventive, the chances are pretty likely that they will get heartworms in their lifetime. Heartworms can easily be prevented with a monthly preventive (or a 6 month shot). Talk to your vet about it today! Yes, it's an additional cost each month but surely there is something that could be cut out of the budget to make room for it when it means your pet won't suffer from this horrible disease. If your dog does get heartworms, it can be treated but it's costly and very tough on your pet...some pets do die during treatment. That's why it's so important to get them on the monthly preventive so they won't have to go through treatment. Unfortunately there is no treatment for cat's so it's even more important to get your cat's on the preventive. Without treatment, your pet will eventually die a painful death. Please spare them from that...learn more about heartworms here http://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-ownerresources/canine-heartworm.html and http://www.heartwormsociety.org/petowner-resources/feline-heartworm.html. "Make Your Pet A Star" Photo Contest & Calendar Fundraiser It's calendar time! Who wants to show off their pets? The PAWS "Make Your Pet A Star" Photo Contest & Calendar fundraiser has begun. Enter your pet's photos, purchase a calendar and support

a great cause! All photos entered will be displayed in the 2014 PAWS Calendar on the days of the week, but 13 lucky pets will be chosen to represent the 12 months plus the cover. Entry fees are $15 for the 1st photo and $5 for any additional photos entered. You can enter your pet's photo online as well as pre-purchase your calendar(s). Even if you don t have a pet to enter, we hope you ll still purchase a calendar for only $15. They make great Christmas gifts! Calendars will be printed and ready for shipping or pick-up around the first week of November. All proceeds benefit the programs of PAWS which include: Spay/Neuter Assistance, Animal Shelter Rescue, Tag Your Pet and Pet Therapy. Details on how to enter the photo contest will be posted soon at www.pawsnela.org. You can also email us at pawscalendar@yahoo.com for an entry form. Adopt a Pet So you don't have a pet to enter into our "Make Your Pet A Star" contest??? We can help! There are MANY great shelter/rescue dogs and cats waiting on new families to come and sweep them off their feet...you can search online, choose a few favorites and then go out and meet them at one of the local shelters in Northeast Louisiana. You can start your search at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter where over 7,000 dogs and cats enter each year. Visit their website or their Facebook page to start your search for a companion today! Sponsor-A-Spay Angels Our 7th Annual Sponsor A Spay Fundraiser has raised over $8300 since July! Thanks to our Sponsor A Spay Angels, we will be able to spay or neuter over 200 pets of low-income pet owners in Northeast Louisiana. We are so thankful to have such wonderful supporters who help us work towards accomplishing our mission. Please visit our website to see a list of our SAS Angels. If you would like to sponsor a spay and have your name added as an SAS Angel, click here to donate! Spay-Neuter Services Update If you have been following PAWS for a while, you know that we have been working very hard to open the PAWS of NE Louisiana Spay-Neuter Services Center a low-cost spay/neuter center here in Monroe, LA. It has taken us much longer than expected but we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and we are very excited! This facility

tunnel and we are very excited! This facility will allow us to spay and neuter over 6,000 animals per year which in turn will save so many lives by preventing thousands of unwanted litters. The center will be targeted to low income pet owners but will be available for use by all pet owners, rescue groups and animal shelters in Northeast Louisiana. Click here to see how our mentor group, Humane Alliance, operates and get an idea of what we are trying so hard to bring to our area! We have recently finished the final step in our renovation process! Words can't describe how grateful we are to Reggie Owens & his crew at Owens Construction for transforming our damaged parking lot (from 18 wheelers parking on it). He generously donated this work in memory of his wife's dog, Gypsy. Visit the PAWS photo gallery to see pictures of some of the building's progress. All that holds us back from opening our doors is finding a Veterinarian who is ready to help us start saving lives! We are currently looking to hire a full-time Veterinarian (or possibly 2 part-time Vets) so please help us spread the word no matter where you live. You never know when someone may want to relocate to the Monroe/West Monroe area! Email us at pawsnela@yahoo.com for further details about the position. Foster Homes Needed In 2012, we were able to rescue 186 dogs from the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter. The ONLY way we are able to do this is with the help of temporary foster homes. Without foster homes, those 186 dogs would have lost their lives due to overcrowding at the shelter. WE NEED YOU to help us save more lives this year! PAWS covers all medical expenses, you just provide food, love and guidance for your foster dog. We do ask that the dogs be fostered indoors with the family (we can provide you with a crate or xpen if needed) and we ask that your pets be up to date on their vaccinations and spayed/neutered. So what are you waiting for? Fill out this foster home application today and help save a life! Lost a Pet?

Welcome! We would like to thank and welcome our August 2013 new and renewing members! Not a member? Join us today! Click here to become a PAWS member...
