Table of Threatened Animals in Amazing Animals in Australia s National Parks and Their Traffic-light Conservation Status Note: Traffic-light conservation status for the book was determined using a combination of formal listings and current threats. Formal conservation listings at international, national and/or state levels are provided, and the reason for concern if there is no formal listing. (Formal listings International: IUCN Red List; Australia: National EPBC Act; various State/Territory Acts) Page Animal Status in Book Formal Listing &/or Reason for Concern Fish 104 Murray Cod IUCN Critically Endangered; EPBC Act Vulnerable 120 Whale Shark IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act Vulnerable & Migratory Species reptiles 14 Yellow-spotted Monitor Northern Territory Vulnerable 37 Lace Monitor VIC Vulnerable; SA rare; QLD Least concern 56 Boyd s Forest Dragon Very small distribution range and vulnerable to impacts of climate change. 58 Green Python 74 Mulga Snake 107 Red-bellied Black Snake Considered by experts to be rare but it s not officially listed as and threatened anywhere Abundance declining in some locations due to predation on Cane Toads and subsequent poisoning. Some QLD and NSW populations have declined dramatically, possibly due to predation on Cane Toads and subsequent poisoning. 108 Pig-nosed Turtle IUCN Vulnerable; Northern Territory Near Threatened 122 Green Turtle red IUCN Endangered; EPBC Act Vulnerable; QLD, NSW, SA, TAs Vulnerable; Northern Territory Least Concern; WA rare/likely to become extinct 123 Flatback Turtle IUCN and Northern Territory data deficient; EPBC Act, QLD Vulnerable; WA rare/likely to become extinct Gina Newton: Teachers Notes Amazing Animals of Australia s National Parks 1

Birds 22 Bush Stone-curlew IUCN Least concern; NSW, VIC Endangered; SA rare; QLD Least concern. Former range in south-eastern Australia drastically declined and virtually extinct in many locations south of Great Dividing Range, but doing better in north. 23 Barking Owl red IUCN Least concern; VIC Endangered (most threatened owl in VIC); NSW Vulnerable; SA rare 39 Black-Cockatoo: Yellow-tailed & Redtailed IUCN Least concern; Red-tailed south-eastern subspecies C. b. graptogyne EPBC Act Endangered; VIC, SA Endangered. Red tailed south-western subspecies C.b. naso IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act Vulnerable; WA Vulnerable. Principal threats shortage of suitable nest hollows (form in trees 130 200 years old) and suitable food availability (stringybark habitat seeds). Note: 3 other sub-species of Red-tailed from northern and central Australia are Least Concern as is the species. 60 Southern Cassowary red IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act, QLD Endangered 76 Malleefowl red IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act, SA Vulnerable; NSW, VIC Endangered; WA protected. Habitat loss and fragmentation resulted in localised extinctions and fragmented populations. Habitat degradation continues due to grazing by domestic and feral herbivores. Rainfall has important influence on reproductive output and the climate is drying. Impacts from feral cats are a concern. 77 Major Mitchell s Cockatoo green but should be 91 Wedge-tailed Eagle IUCN Least concern; VIC Vulnerable; Birdlife Australia s Action Plan for Australian Birds 2010 recommends Near Threatened A3 for the eastern sub-species L.l. leadbeateri due to decline in nest hollow availability and competition with Galahs and European Honey Bees for nest hollows. IUCN Least concern. NSW protected. Tasmanian sub-species A. a. fleayi Endangered under EPBC Act 92 Gang-gang Cockatoo IUCN Least concern; NSW Vulnerable as an Endangered Population occurs in north-western Sydney suburbs and habitat on highland slopes is severely fragmented. 113 Black-necked Stork IUCN Near threatened; NSW Endangered 127 White-bellied Sea-Eagle IUCN Least concern; EPBC Act Marine & Migratory protected species; SA Endangered; VIC, TAS Vulnerable 128 Hooded Plover red IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act Marine protected species; NSW Critically Endangered; VIC Endangered; SA Vulnerable Gina Newton: Teachers Notes Amazing Animals of Australia s National Parks 2

Monotremes 115 Platypus IUCN Least concern; Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 Near Threatened due to (inconsistent) decline across range (substantial in Victoria) but difficult to estimate population size. Various threats operate. 28 Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat red marsupials IUCN Least concern; NSW Endangered; Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 Near Threatened due to new knowledge of disease and other threats, recorded decline and likely susceptibility to impacts of climate change. 30 Rufous Bettong IUCN Least concern; NSW Vulnerable; VIC Regionally Extinct; QLD low priority 31 Spectacled Hare-wallaby 43 Brush-tailed Phascogale + IUCN Least concern; Northern Territory Near Threatened; Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 Near Threatened due to past declines, sub-populations declining, foxes, cats and habitat loss/fragmentation. Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 Near Threatened due to new knowledge on population size which is small and declining. 82 Bilby (Greater) red IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act Vulnerable; QLD Endangered; Northern Territory, SA, WA Vulnerable; The Bilby was common throughout inland Australia until the early 1900s. It declined due to habitat loss, pests like rabbits, cats and foxes, livestock grazing, and changed fire regimes. It has been successfully reintroduced to some reserves. 84 Quokka IUCN Vulnerable; EPBC Act Vulnerable 85 Southern Marsupial Mole IUCN Data deficient; EPBC Act Endangered; Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 Least concern due to new knowledge that it is widespread and no evidence of a decline. New monitoring technology has found lots (100 km/ha) of their semi-persistent sand-filled tunnels honeycombing the sand dunes. 96 Tasmanian Devil red IUCN Endangered; EPBC Act Endangered; TAS Endangered 97 Dusky Antechinus: Mainland & Tasmanian IUCN Least concern; Action Plan for Australian Mammals 2012 Grampians sub-species A. m. insulanus Near threatened.
