Partners For Pets Issue 2 January/February 2008 Partners For Pets 2007 Statistics Total Rescued and Rehabilitated: 1,000!! Dogs 544 Cats 456 $80,000 Average Vet Bills per year ALL of our funding comes from individual donations from supporters. We appreciate every donation we receive, because that is what keeps us operating. We do not receive any funding from the Government. We are registered as a 501c3 charity, so all donations are tax deductible. We do not have any paid staff, so all donations go directly to the care of the animals. We currently operate with approximately 20 dedicated volunteers. We need more volunteers to help our numbers continue to increase in 2008! Featured Pets: Timothy Timothy is a Shepherd mix. He is approximately 4 years old. He is very sweet and immediately became a volunteer favorite when he came to the shelter. He is super playful and friendly. However, he is able to get out of fences, he even managed to get out of a 6 ft fence. He is looking for a loving home that will provide him with attention and many walks. Timothy is neutered, current on all shots, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Toby Partners For Pets Mission Statement: Partners For Pets rescues dogs and cats from animal control facilities with high kill and low adoption rates. Animals that are sick, injured, frail or terrified are given first priority as their chance of adoption is poor. The animals receive basic medical care such as spay/neuter, booster shots, worming, flea treatment, microchip, heartworm test for dogs, FIV/Felv test for cats, rabies shot and general exam prior to adoption. Any other medical care that is need is also provided. P4P is a licensed animal shelter with IL Dept of Agriculture and Missouri and is registered with the IRS as a 501c)3) charity. Toby is a 3-4 year old boy, his owners could no longer keep him. He is declawed on all 4 feet. He is neutered, current on shots, feline leukemia neg, has his annual rabies vaccination and is microchipped. Partners For Pets1

D O N A T E I T E M S New Toys Dog Treats Old Blankets Paper Towels Bleach Cat/Dog Beds Cleaning Supplies Food & Water Bowls Collars / Leashes Towels Canned Pet Food S P O N S O R A P E T Become a guardian angel for one of our deserving rescue dogs. You can make a small weekly or monthly donation for a specific animal in our care. As their guardian angel you will be kept updated on their progress and notified when they are adopted. Many of our animals are in desperate need of emergency veterinary treatment. In January, one beagle that was rescued needed emergency surgery to fix a serious problem with his eye. Many of the dogs we rescue are heartworm positive and need to undergo heartworm treatments. It is cases like these that you can sponsor and help tremendously in the care of these animals. F O S T E R A P E T Open your home to one of our animals on a temporary basis as a foster parent. Animals that have lived in a foster home have been known to become better socialized and adopt out faster. Plus, the more animals that are fostered leaves more room in the shelter for more animals to be rescued. Partners For Pets2

Special Cases: We rescue animals with hopes that they will find their forever homes within a reasonable amount of time. However, sometimes, for one reason or another, certain animals do not adopt out as quickly. The following featured dogs really need to find the right person to give them a home. Nelly Nelly has been at the shelter for many months now. She is a very energetic little dog. She needs to be in a home that does not have any cats or small children. She gets along with most other dogs. Nelly has also been known to climb fences and jump very high. At the shelter, we clip a heavy rubber toy on a leash to her collar and this seems to help this escape artist remain in the fence. If you are interested in Nelly, please contact us. You can see more about her on our website. Cowboy Cowboy is approximately 1 year old cattle dog mix. He has been at the shelter about 5 months. He was wandering outside the Farm Fresh store in Edwardsville and was covered in blood. One of our volunteers saw him and took him in and cleaned him up. He is very sweet and super playful. He should do well with obedience training. He is neutered, current on shots, heartworm negative and microchipped. Gwen Gwen was picked up by a pound when she was approximately 8 years old. They examined her and found that she was heartworm positive. They began heartworm treatments, not knowing at the time that she was pregnant. As a result of the treatments, she lost all of her puppies. After this, she was very depressed. She has come around at the shelter and is appearing to be less depressed, but she needs to find a home that she can live out her life comfortably. She is a sweet dog that needs love and affection. She will need to be on heartworm preventative strictly for the rest of her life because she may not survive another round of heartworm treatments. She is a very quiet laid back dog that would make a wonderful pet. Partners For Pets3

DONATIONS NEEDED! Please remember that the shelter exists solely on private donations and grants. We do not receive any government funding. If it wasn t for the generosity of every one of our supporters, we would not be able to do any rescues. The following are just a few examples of what donation dollars are used for: A gift of $3 will pay for one booster shot A gift of $5 will pay for one Rabies shot A gift of $10 will provide 40 pounds of food for the shelter A gift of $25 will cure heartworms in an infected small dog A gift of $30 will pay for a hernia to be repaired A gift of $35 will pay to neuter one animal A gift of $50 will pay to spay one animal Every donation is greatly appreciated, no matter the amount. A Rescue Dog s Christmas Poem Unknown Author Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town, every shelter is full - we are lost, but not found, Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare, we hope every minute that someone will care, They'll come to adopt us and give us the call, "Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball! But now we sit here and think of the days... we were treated so fondly - we had cute, baby ways, Once we were little, then we grew and we grew now we're no longer young and we're no longer new. So out the back door we were thrown like the trash, they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash? We "jump on the children," "don't come when they call", we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall. We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed, now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made. If only they'd trained us, if only we knew... we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too. We were left in the backyard, or worse -let to roamnow we're tired and lonely and out of a home. They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye... "Maybe someone else will give you a try." So now here we are, all confused and alone... in a shelter with others who long for a home. The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat, with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat, They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer... we know that they wonder how long we'll be here. We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads... of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds. Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears - our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear. If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn - could you help with the bills and fill our food bin? We count on your kindness each day of the year - can you give more than hope to everyone here? Please make a donation to pay for the heat... and help get us something special to eat. The shelter that cares for us wants us to live, and more of us will, if more people will give. -Author Unknown Partners For Pets5
